@@redbirdtrade Another great thing with using foam is that it comes in different thicknesses, get the closest to the leather you’re using and you can work out how well you’re pattern will fit together.
As someone who larps and does a little bit of foasmithing every here and there this video has my hyping about the leather kit I have …somewhere in this house. Also the random leather scraps I have. Definitely sharing this. Thank you two!!
Loved the project in both leather and foam. I believe it was Bill with one of the old leather videos a while back that inspired me to try leatherwork out and much later I actually got into it and have a couple years of it behind my belt.
That's awesome! It was probably the video with Gregg making the holster for the Blade Runner blaster! I loved that video too ans found it super inspiring
Holy crap thank goodness for this video. Paige has always been amazing. She always was so great on the Facebook group, I've missed her quite a bit I'm happy to subscribe to her channel
Great work as always. For anyone interested Paige makes great wee handbound leather books with beautiful printed pages. I picked one up a while back and I'm legit scared to write in it it's so pretty
O wow, I've been wanting to start leather making but was always so intimidated by it. Having a familiar face make a leather channel is super exciting. Definitely subscribed!
In addition to Paige's channel, I recommend checking out the leatherwork videos on Townsends, here on youtube. There are only a few, but Brandon over there will give you a good feel for what simple, artisanal leatherwork takes (which is not much honestly).
Using the gel antique as a stain is a good trick, I'll have to try that myself. It looks like you can get a much more even colour than I've been able to get using normal dye.
When I saw Paige in an earlier preview, I thought, "I know her... but from where?" Thanks for reminding (old man) me that she worked for you. So happy to see her again and knowing what she is doing. Great Video! Thanks for the Preview - 2 Thumbs up... and a Bag o' chips!
Paige just got a new follow... I used to do leatherwork with my grandpa and have been entertaining going back into it. This video confirmed my desire to go back into leather working, and I look forward to watching all of Paige's videos! Hopefully if I have any questions, she can help out.
I'm too scared to try leather making as a hobby due to the price point & the fact that I already have so many projects in the works, but I can appreciate the artistry of the craft as a whole. Love the side-by-size comparison!!
perfect timing on this video, im going to the ren faire this weekend and wanted 1 of these but as a vegetarian i dont buy leather but now im inspired to make the foam 1!
Paige was super cute! Great video you guys. I'm getting into leatherwork myself and its helped a lot having done so much foamsmithing. Thanks for the vid!
When Bill was texturing the foam, I remembered the 3d printed texturing that he did a while ago with his arbor press. It would only work with the foam when it is still flat
Thank you! Angelus leather paints are super flexible. Another option would be Plaid FX paints: plaidonline.com/plaidfx A lot of acrylic-based paints stay flexible.
My partner and I just started getting into leathercraft more last year. Making a fun hat now, have it for DragonCon this year. Hope to see you guys at Dcon this year!
On the stitching i was taught to go back through the start a few times or to put a rivet at the top. Also i would have rounded the bottom corners of the belt loop so they wouldn't catch every time and start to bend up. Nice pattern and love the use of the magnets.
The pounding of the holes in the leather gave me flashbacks of dimpling aluminum aircraft skins for flush rivets. You usually use a tool/form with a mallet a few hundred times per skin.
They both came out so beautifully!! However, I am absolutely enamored by the little kitty paw with a magnet! Where did you find such a cute and useful tool?
Great video! I love the idea of comparing construction methods and materials on an identical piece! 😁 Hey, I have those coins! Who's the Acquisitions Incorporated fan?!
Great video! Good to see some branching out............ (?).... Question; I'm using some 1 oz. leather to make a very small mask on a wooden "mold". I'd like to thin it out....am going to try to use some rough sandpaper on the rough side of the leather piece to do so...can't afford any "short-time-use tools. In your opinion, is this a good way to make my small, (3" w/h), piece thinner? Keep up the good work I"m old, I like the leather route instead of most often foam........... Thank you for any help you might provide.
I don't know that you'll need to thin 1oz leather very much, that's quite thin already! But if you still want to, you're on the right track with removing material from the "flesh" side. You can use a razor blade to scrape off material - that's called skiving.
I have found that the easier way to add texture to the foam is to actually use the tinfoil before it’s assembled. If you use a sheet of aluminum foil and you place it on the foam and then use an iron (I use Cricut Easy Press but a non-steam iron setting can work just as good) so it manipulates the foam to get crinkly all in one piece and you can increase the texture based on how many times you do it :)
I make knives and the leather sheathes for them. I really enjoy working with leather and now I wanna make a pouch like this with my own style. Just need to get more leather.
I used most of Bills foam pattern to make Nazgûl gauntlets out of leather. I’m amazed I don’t see more leatherworkers doing this. Especially for cosplay where foam patterns are so much more common.
I started sewing up this little project a week after dying it. (I was waiting for stuff) and wheni started sadde stitching it, it began ripping through the stitch holes. Any suggestions... maybe I should have moistened it before stitching... idk. I really love this video and pattern.😊
Im curious to ask Bill, why did you skip the plastidipping of the foam? Does the paint itself have enough "material" in it to keep the foam/paint from peeling? To Paige, you make leather working look easy and im now actually curious to try it out too for small items like pouches for my cosplays. Thank you for that!
@@redbirdtrade I will i think, ive always had a mixed approach to pouches on my cosplay using a foam box then skinning it with fabric, but leatherwork seems properly fun too!
I usually add PlastiDip or other sealers if I want a different surface texture on the foam. In this project I was perfectly happy to go with the texture we got with the foil.
i gotta watch this with audio when i get home but will you guys do more destiny stuff in the future?im getting back into it and really want the ace of spades
When I worked for Tandy my manager taught me a lot about tool use (that old cowboy type that's been doin this since before I was born). The way you use the groove tool in this video is the correct way to use it. That adjustable arm is supposed to be your guide, and the flat piece in the tool is the marking part. This becomes more apparent if you swap out that flat piece for the black groover (which comes with the tool when you buy at Tandy). That alternative tool actually creates a channel in the leather, and it would not work if you tried to use it the other way. Edit: Also, the ceramic blade for the swivel knife should not be sharpened (read: cannot be sharpened). Instead, you would use a strop and some polishing compound to remove any burs that may form during use (which is quite rare).

Shit man, I couldn't figure out which was the foam from the thumbnail! I figured Paige's brighter orange bag was foam just from the orange color, but the stitching looked amazeballs. Not the the stitching on the darker brown didn't look convincing but based on the stitches I started sussing Bill's browner bag. I have a hard time getting the foam to take the foil method of transfer, never convinced I'm getting enough texture on it. But I couldn't pick out a faux bag based on texture from the thumbnail!

As a leather worker I have always used foam when mocking up a pattern, it’s far cheaper than leather and can be worked on in a very similar way

I've been saying leather and foam work are basically the same for years and the amount of flak I've gotten for it is unreal.
If you make stencils of the patterns in clear plastic. Really easy to see the holes and lines
Yes that's a great option if you know you're going to be making many copies of that item!
That foam stitching will be useful when I make another of Evil Ted's Overhaul mask! I used golden hot glue on my first version.
