Well, it's not really a Coheed cover, it's a Claudio Sanchez cover. Claudio actually has a much broader range of musical endeavors outside of Coheed and Cambria, and a couple diverse side projects. He is definitely best known for his Prog Metal, but he can get down with some smoother genres, too.
This whole "if you don't like it, you're not listening right. Or don't have a good taste in music" mentality that Coheed fans have is pretty embarrassing as a fellow Coheed fan. My favorite band is Coheed, but some people don't like Coheed. I don't see why it can't just end there, instead flame wars occur on every Coheed related video. Just ignore the people who say they don't like it, they are allowed to not like it. On a more relevant note, fantastic song, beautiful cover. Claudio doing Claudio things and making it work as usual.

Like how The Afterman (song) sounds much different than Number City. So a lot of times people who like that style get defensive when people don't like it along with them.
