- As a long time watch enthusiast, it may seem like nature to wind and set your watch. But as a client of mine purchased his first automatic watch emailed me, asking how to do so.
This is a simple tutorial on how to properly wind and set your automatic watch. There are 3 examples of different types of watches.
Hope this is helpful to everyone!
This video is a perfect example of someone who really knows their business giving advice. Details that you only learn from experience. Awesome video.
Thank you! Got my first auto and didn't want to mess it up off the get go. Great info!
Thanks John. Really helped a "newbie" who's worn a watch for 57 years.
The date explanation was great. My Loreo sub will appreciate that.
I love how thorough this is! So many of the other videos I found did not go into detail about how to tell what position the crown is in or which way to turn it. This is really great for absolute beginners.
I bought my longines automatic 2 months ago. I wheeled the gauge and for some unexpected reasons, the time and date got messed up. I thought of sending it to be repaired, so I asked a friend to fix it for me , it worked for a couple of days only. after watching your detailed instructions I was able to fix it ( for now) it seems working right for now.
Brother just wanted to thank you very much,in the whole of you tube you have been the and i finally understand how to operate an automatic the right way, thank you again
Can’t beat gold polished Roman numerals that sparkle like jewels in the sunlight. Loving the sun ray dial man that pops!AMZWATCH watches. What a beautiful subtle piece.
Very helpful, John, thank you!
I just ordered my first automatic. The Orient Sun and Moon V3, so this helped with what to do when it arrives.
It felt like such a dumb thing to search for, but I was really glad I watched this video. Thanks.
Thank you for doing this I bought my first automatic watch a couple months ago and couldn’t figure why my Hamilton khaki Kong’s power reserve wasn’t working I’m glad my local jeweler was nice enough to explain everything to me.
CAJUN EDC Man I've just got a Hamilton Khaki today, I was watching this video hoping to find some info. Any tips? Can you over wind the Khaki? Cheers bro..
What a gorgeous watch! The first one. Thanks fot the tutorial!
I’m slowy finding myself falling in love with California dials. I have a feeling that’ll be on my next watch. Thanks again John for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent tutorial! 👍👍👍I take for granted, operating ...often brutely 😅
This was very helpful and informative, thank you! I just purchased my first self winding automatic watch, which came with a pretty lousy manual. I figured out the screw down crown myself, but I wasn't sure about the manual winding and was feeling a but uneasy about screwing the crown back in. Now I know that's how it's done and I haven't applied 'excessive' force and damaged the poor thing :')
This was extremely helpful to me.. Thank you!
Thank you! This was clear and informative for a newbie to automatic watches. I was unaware of the not changing the date from 9pm to 3am. Lots of useful info!
Just bought my first ever Auto Hamilton. Thank fully the watch seller told the same thing abt the date and day changing procedure. Thank you so much .
Just got my first swiss watch with a screw down crown, i appreciate this video, a lot easier then reading the massive book longine gives you 👍
Thank you for the video. I just bought my first automatic watch and this tutorial was very helpful.
Awesome tutorial! You covered in depth the very important points when it comes to this!
Very helpful this I've just got my very first automatic watch. Thanks
Finally a video without Seiko in it! :)) Well done!
amazing work man
Thank you very much. I never knew I had to wind the watch and now I know how to set and do everything except for using the tachymeter. Thank you lots!
Thank you, it was much easier then I thought, my Tia got me a watch a month ago and I only set it now thank you again
Very informative thanks for posting just bought my 1st automatic didn’t know all this
Superb! Thank you so much for technical clarification! I have an Oris GMT and heard about the rule 9pm and 3am but didn't know what was the reason now I fully understand ,great video by the way!
you saved me so much time. thank you. first swiss auto watch longinge .
very useful its very easy for a beginner to mess up or even break there new automatic watch because they don't know about the date window change rule
Really loved this Vlog. Well presented and informative. It was also extremely easy for me to follow. I also learned that you can change the calendar date without moving the hands constantly around the face for each day!! I was 72 on the 15th, and, I have only now learned that! I have a question and I hope you can help me with it. I have an expensive retirement watch - bought myself sadly! It's a Seiko Automatic 3days. Diver 200m. its beautiful. However, it keeps stopping when I take it off to go to work. I do forget to put it on but I'll only miss a day at the most. Have I done something wrong setting it up [besides with the speed in which I can change the date] hope you can help. Also it lost ten minutes today! Thanks in advance. Bye for now....
I meant to say your the best brother
That is an excellent very detailed video. Date function on a quartz watch is great. I dare say virtually no one is interested in setting date on automatic watch unless it is the only automatic watch they have. When the watch is not being used and stops, you can not take time to be religiously resetting the date.
Perfect instructions!
Nicely done. Thank you.
Very useful, thanks . Just picked up my first automatic.
Yes, I have bought from MAMACOO more than once. I even bought a new Omega Speedmaster which came with the fancy box and packaging. I am thrilled with all my purchases here. I would purchase from MAMACOO again for sure.
Thank you.Your information very very helpful me to set up my watch
Great video! Thanks for sharing
Hi there. Thanks very much for the very informative video regarding automatic watches. I’m currently thinking of buying the new Seiko padi turtle and I’ll make sure that I’m really careful regarding how the day/date Etc and manual winding is done. Thanks again regards Ian from England
I've got a solar powered, radio controlled G-Shock, yet here I am watching this
Cause you feel incomplete... Go out.. An get yourself a mechanical watch.. You will feel better.....
Anyone at least should have one of Mechanical watch in your collection.
Same, laying here at 2am. But its never too late to learn something new haha
Just make sure you do not change the date between 9pm and 3am!
Same here, but im planning on buying an automatic soon 👍 if you like g shocks, you'll like a diver
I love it! Thank you so much, sir. We really appreciate your video.
AWESOME video! The important basics never go out of style 👌🏻✅👍🏻🥃
Very helpful. Thank you.
OMG! Thank you for this!
Awesome explanation 🙌 keep it rocking.
When it comes to fine imitation watches, nkuwan delivers. I've bought from them several times, and I've never been let down.
Great explanation.
Hey John, long time no see...
Was curious and just got an automatic, finding your video and channel again.

Thank you so much its really very helpful video 🙏👍
So one click is the date window amd two clicks are the hours and minute hands and one click clockwise is to wind the second hand. I hope I got that right. I got my river Chanel J12 automatic. And this is all new to me
nice watch man!
Can you damage the mechanism if you turn it counterclockwise by setting the correct time? Many instructions say that this can lead to damage to the mechanism and that only turning in a clockwise direction is recommended.
Hi your instructions is very precise!
Do all automatic watches can be set the same way regardless of brand?
I will appreciate your reply. Thank you!
Excellent instructions. Thank you.
Good review! Just what I’ve been looking for !! Keep being detailed.
I ve heard some advices that when you are winding your automatic watch its better after every 5-10 clockwise turns to make a single turn counterclockwise and then proceed cw again. Like its better for watch movement lubricant. Dont know if its true or not (I am actually browsing through such videos to find that).
I have a question, is it true that manual winding of automatic watches wears out the gears and we shouldn't manually wind automatics often? Thanks for any insight!
Thank you! So much value given! Newbie here haha
Good information thank you so much
I have an automatic 18k ladies diamond bezel omega and it is very hard for me to wind. Is there a tool to help as I cannot tell if I am getting the winds in.Sometimes I get a grinding noise and it will stop ticking after I set the time.
Why do have to push the crown back to zero position when switching between date and time positions? Is there any advantage to it?
Great tutorial. I want a day date watch. 38 to 40mm. What would you recommend?
There was a guy at the jewelry store in the mall said to do this with every watch, after you screw the crown in, take a small awl, and a small hammer, put the tip of the awl on the crown, then give the hammer a whack,he said it seats the crown in the gasket for a complete water tight seal
Very helpful man
I recently bought a watch with NH35 movement. I winded it on thursday morning 9:00 55 times. Wore it continously except for sleeping and cooking so thats minus 8 hours a day. It stopped running at 6:25 this morning.... Is this normal??
Im afraid when have to wind it too often the screw threads gonna wear of?....
Hi John,
Sometimes , while setting the time on my automatic , when I turn the crown in anticlockwise direction, I hear a "click" sound 2-3 times , and the minute hand doesn't move. Once the sound stops, i can move the minute hand in clockwise direction as usual . But if I try to move it in a anticlockwise direction ( by turning the crown in the clockwise direction ), then the second hand stops, while in the former case, it continues moving . PS: i don't have a hacking mechanism.
If on other days, if the "click" sound doesn't appear, then I can move the minute hand in either direction without the seconds hand getting stopped.
Is there a problem or a sign of some incoming problem?
This may sound like a goofy question but is there any harm to wearing an automatic watch for a minute or so and then setting the time as opposed to hand winding? It’s all I’ve done to my Tissot Powermatic and have yet to see or hear that it has any impact on it.
i thought that if i turn the crown counter clock wise i harm the mechanism , is that a thing or i can do micro adjustments (e.g. move minute hand on my watch 4-5 minutes back to correct the time) ? having a seiko 5 with 4r36 caliber TIA
I’m new to this. Can you “over-wind” an automatic watch?
Great video! And nice watches!...I may have made the mistake of accidentally setting the date between the hours of 9 and 3 pm. (New Orient Ray 2)
Will my watch be ok if I’ve only done it once or twice? I have not adjusted it yet to see if the date changed properly. It should be ok as long as I don’t do it again right? Thank you!!
I have a Balmer auto that doesn’t seem to have this screw dial design. It doesn’t pop out when turned, only when I pull on it. No direction I wind in seems to make a difference.
i have a watch with a crown that doesn't pop out when you try to un thread it, how do you wind that kind of watch??
You have earned one suby...good work...
Prashant k Prasad Thank you sir!
Oris has a safety feature for the date and not properly setting the time at those times.
very helpful
I have always wondered how accurate a watch is when the time is set while the second hand is not at the 12:00 position. Example: If I set my watch to 12:30 pm and the second hand is already reading 15 seconds (sitting at the 3:00 position) - isn't my watch 15 seconds fast right off the bat?
If the watch has hacking, shouldn't the user wait to set the time until the second hand is at the 12:00 (or 0 second) position???
when setting your watch, can you go counter clockwise?
Great video! Thank you. Being new to Automatic watches. In generally say on a nh35 how long does it last when you Wind it? Like say you wind it manually and sit it on your table. How long approximately will it run till it dies? Also how many hours a day would you have to "Wear" your automatic watch to keep it going without having to manually wind it? Thanks for your time! -Russ
I knew how to și IT then watched your video and now i think i know
Hello good sir, I winded my hour hand counter-clockwise(stupid me). I'm now worried, did I just ruined my automatic watch, or was that ok for now?
Hi sir , my Maserati watch without date, I’ve done what you’ve done, my second hand just stops moving even when I screwed it back, help. !!
Nice review subject wise. I have seen no one mentioning about the back play of the crown and accordingly set the time and at the same time showing both screwed crown and non screwed crown. But then I think that a good engines have very least back play and more on a restricted plays right?
Thank you so much!
Really helpful!
"Today is July 2nd" - Happy birthday to me lol
Same here
Same here
My new revue thommen just wind and wind it doesnt give any tention. There is no stop. Is this normal?
Thank you so much!
New subscriber...
You saved me from destroying my watch.. i was about to pry open the crown🙂
Interesting winding - you move counter clockwise to set the hour. I watched another video where they moved clockwise to set the hour. Is it not universal and can be opposite for different brands?
superrrrr helpful thank u
I bought ZELOS HAMMERHEAD V3 STEEL ORANGE but the watch is moving forward time 5 minutes each 1 hour approx, is there a solution?
Hi, I have a question, and I hope someone will help me with this :
I have an old automatic watch (a Doxa Conquistador), with an unscrewed crown but with date. I don't have a particularly active life (desk job) but my watch stops too regularly. When the crown is fully in, it doesn't turn clockwise, but does counter-clockwise, but I don't think it's doing anything. When I set on the hour change position, somehow, the mechanism starts when I'm setting the hour, specifically when going counter-clockwise . So is it possible that the winding mechanism is included in the time set mechanism? Or maybe this watch doesn't have a manual winding at all?
I am clearly not an expert of watch so I don't even know if this makes any sense, I hope I get understood and thank you!
So if I have a longines watch and it’s not ticking and I winded it is it broken?
Good info
I fully wind my watches and use a stopwatch to keep track how long it’s run time is before I have to wind it again, that way I’m not winding it everyday 😎
Very helpful thanks
Very helpful, many thanks. Question; when you wind it fully, does it increase in resistance until you can't wind any further?
On an automatic you shouldn't feel any resistance build up (in most automatics), a manual wind you will feel resistance build and eventually stop.
