this is really helpful. i’m a few months into my first year of IB and i’ve been frustrated at some of my grades. the adjustment from pre-IB to DP felt like a slap to the face. i’ve always been down about failure but hearing you share them is really motivating.
Im in the exact situation right now. I got a 92 on my first major math test and i need to end up with a 98 to be able to get to waterloo CS, its really stressful but having a good time so far.
"You almost dropped out of IB senior year?" Honestly, it’s tough. I got dropped to courses because of a 3 in my bio G11 final test. That’s it, even though I was mine mark off. But this is honestly very encouraging.
We as human are usually inclined to share successes then hide failures, so I really (I think most of us do) appreciate you sharing this. Failures are a part of our successes, or even a prerequisite. :)
As someone from IB MYP (the 5 year program before DP), I feel like it's so much easier to do IB because you already have the skills developed in MYP, and finishing DP becomes easier than students who join straight to DP. People who did the DP alone seriously deserve a medal because it's hard to develop so much in two years.
my cohort had what we called "Rollercoaster" weeks because some weeks we really did not have much work but when it came closer to exams we were all stressed.
Thank you so much, Katie! I've been failing my chemistry HL mock papers lately and my grades for all classes started dropping because I was not in the right mind, but this video gave me hope that I can do better! I went to the pre-IB class because of you 🙂 you are inspiring me all the time, i want to study in US, that is my biggest dream. Thank you for that soooooo much 🙃🙂🥰
all of the points that you mentioned are exactly I believe that random high schools in the US need to stop having an ib program. I was in pre-ib my freshman and sophomore years but the school had no support for the ib system. (I had friends who were juniors and seniors so I knew what the actual ib program was like) there was absolutely no critical thinking being done and most of the culture was sharing answers instead of knowledge. additionally, there was absolutely no communication between teachers and students. I think I remember the highest score ever for the school was a 28 or 29, but the grading was immensely easier than the official tests so everyone just blamed it on the test instead of their inadequate education. anyways thanks 4 coming to my ted talk, i believe the ib program is great but doesn’t really have a place at schools without the resources to support it. (it damages the non-ib kids as well!)
I totally see where you’re coming from. Since working on IBlieve, I’ve realized how large the disparity is between schools that offer IB. I really hope to be able to increase accessibility + resources to those schools that need the support.
Honestly you are sooo inspiring because I'm taking the same sciences like you (or maybe pursue the same college major) but I'm failing so much for the first few months. This really motivated me a lot.
thank you so much for this video katie!! really needed it. these past few days i’ve been feeling really unmotivated with all our requirements piling up😫 and we were also informed that m21 exams might not even push through because of how bad ph is handling covid :((
I'm currently struggling a lot with IB, and I'm not scoring fairly low grades. I try making time to study but I don't feel like it helps much as I only see the same grades. I'm still trying my best to make as much time to study as possible but I also want to do what I value, and atm all I'm able to do is go to the gym and not more. I understand that I have 2 yrs to grow but many people in my school keep talking about how important the predicted grades are to get into a good university which makes me very very anxious and stressed. I keep comparing myself to others and I realize how bad I'm actually doing. I really want to get better and at this point I'm hoping for a good final IB diploma score. Universities seem to be taking your predicted grades because the final exam points come out a bit late. I am also planning on taking a gap year when I'm done with high school. Does that then mean that I can apply to universities with my diploma instead of my predicted grades?
I’m in a bit of a similar situation. I’ve watched a couple of these types of videos. Apparently the real deal “grades comes with the mock exam and the IA for IB year 1. I’m quite confused, because our school recently recruited a few new teachers that are adapting to the school’s material and IB. So far, I’ve been in black water but I’m gradually coming out with a plan and ways to deplete procrastination
“Its all a practice at the moment” The grades currently been received in first the year is just a reflection and isn’t the real deal. My understanding is that since most people apply for university at the end of junior It would mean the IA and the mock exam are actually what matters for the first year
This is such an amazing topic to talk about! It's so realistic and sure to motivate IB students all around the world; I love everything that you're doing for students worldwide Katie!
Honestly , there were times I regret taking IB because of the multitasking thingy but there were also times I'm glad I take IB. Striving through my second year now 💪😌✨ Good video btw ❣️
I am a senior graduating with an IB diploma this year!! I have a Cornell interview (I’m pretty nervous) in two days and I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
I was the first student to do a world studies ee in my school, and had very little guidance, so after I submitted my (very very bad) first draft apparently all of my subject teachers (and a couple of others) gathered with my coordinator and discussed how worried they were!!! The next day it was literally like gossip among them that I was failing my EE (like speaking in hushed whispers around me and everything - it was surreal)! Fast forward a year and I managed to do pretty well :) (though my mom misread the A on my transcript as absent LOL) So amazing to hear that these kinds of things happen to everyone! ❤️ the fact that you made this video and shared this with all of us :)))
That’s amazing, well done!! It’s not common, but I’m also the first student writing an EE in dance at my school, but my supervisor can’t really give me any guidance. :( So I’ll just have to do everything myself.
I went to the #1 private high school in the nation but I still think my friends in public high school IB from Miami had a harder time in school than me 😷😷😷 idk how you guys survive this madness
Ahh. Some people will naturally choose not to move forward. I respect that too, especially if people think it will compromise their mental health. But if you’re up for a healthy challenge, you can gain a lot from IB.💛
I have started watching all your IB video since yesterday because I got the letter that I’ve been accepted into the IB program. The entrance exam wasn’t hard at all💗💗
This is literally me, I am taking my exams this year November 2023, I didn’t do too well for my Mid years and my prelims is upcoming. I am studying hard for it so that I dotn get this but I am just lost
I have my IB exams in exactly a year- and mock exams in a week. All I know is I'm failing what used to be my favorite subject- Math. I don't have time for more work and revision at all.
Man… I’ve been doing ib for 4 month and I really regret choosing ib and moving school just bc of lack of subject choices. I should have thought more cautiously :( ib school to ib school was the worst decision I’ve ever made. I am so lost and feels like my life is totally screwed up. I’m keep getting 2s, 3s, 4s and rarely 5s. I want to move to ap school but it means that I went to 3 different high schools. :( Idk what to do…
hi im really stressed my dp1 final grades are 3 5s 2 6s and 1 4 and i decided to apply for early descision now i think ill fail and i cannot get admitted to any college, plus my extracurricals are almost none, im so dissapointed in my life
Hey Katie!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this video, it is a topic I have been questioning since I started with IB(I'm in the last year).I'd really like to know if you where imagining/ visualising getting a 45 as final result at the beginning of IB, throughout the 2 year course and after the exams? I'm asking you that because when I started the IB course, I was so motivated and I knew that I could get 45.That was my goal!! But after I started ''failing'' in the tests, I started thinking that I should maybe lower my barrier to a more realistic target and final score.
Christina!! It’s great to hear from you again❤️ No, I was not. My goal had always been to just do my best in IB - I never had a 45 as my goal. (Prior to my last 2 years of high school I was an 6 student on average) I did start to feel the pressure when I was predicted so high my senior year, but I just had to remind myself that what got me to this point was focusing on personal growth so I stuck with it.❤️
Thank you Katie!!!!! Love this mindset and I feel is the best that someone can have!!!!!! That's what I'll do, without worrying so much for the results!!!!!! What's most important is to indeed do my best and get the most out of it, as it is one time life experience!!!!!
I scored 5s and 6s in my IB first two semesters can I be predicted above 40 if I score 7s for the remaining DP1.I am literally dying thinking about this
Yes! Teachers know that you’ll still improve by the end of IB. You have to show progress and a commitment to learning though so they believe you will get there! It’s not how you start, it’s how you grow + finish :)
Great video. However, it’s a bit different school to school. So if you get a homogenous mixture of 4s and 7s along with other scores on the homework the teacher averages those numbers. And even if you get a 7 on the final exam they would still average the overall weighing. And RD is on January 1st so it counts 30%.
Hiii I just did my year 1 IB exams, and I feel like I'll fail.. I've been told I do well in class and I'm often questioned when I mess up tests. I seem to mess up tests even if I know my content..I tried a bunch of times improving, I thought I did but I messed up my end year exams for year 1. I was trying to console myself saying I have another year but I was told our predicted will be based on these scores... I'm shook and really worried...is there anything I can do??
I am also in DP1 and studying bio hl. I think the best way to study biology is to prepare before each class and make your own review questions for each chapter (it might be too time-consuming considering the workload of DP). You can also use the past paper from exam mate to practice, those are really good for taking the test! I don't think 72 means you are not strong in understanding information, there is a case in which you know all the concepts but just don't know how to answer IB style questions. The best way for solving this problem is to practice past paper questions and understand the key terms (ex. Determine, discuss, explain). Hope these suggestions can help you!
Hello I am year 2 ib student. Your best recourse would be your book supplied to you and all notes that u take. Many people ignore the textbook which is generally a mistake because it has a lot of content that is beneficial. I would also take past papers on that specific course online.
I’m in the first year of IB and I was doing well (all 6s) until my end of year exams where I got much lower (mostly 4 and 5 due to bad mental health at the time). I know I can do well in mocks and finals so are those bad scores a big deal when applying to universities?
this is the same with me - i’m in my first year as well and at the beginning i was doing really well however we have just completed end of years and i failed most of my exams due to bad mental health and i feel completely crushed by it. i wish you all the best you can 100% do it!!
I was in pre IB for my freshman and sophomore year and then left because I hated it and got anxiety and depression because of it so I transferred to a different school for my junior and senior year that allowed me to get my AA when I graduated high school 🤙🏼
Antonio Street it may change per school but pre ib for us was your freshman and sophomore years and they just prepare you for you actual IB courses which are your higher and lower level courses that you will take the exams for. It’s a lot of basic maths, sciences, language, and writing courses
I am a second IB student, im still dead :(. I take Psychology HL, Biology HL, Chemistry HL, Math Analysis SL, Language B SL, English Lang and Lit SL alskjfa;ksdfasdf. I literally have Psych IA and Math IA to hand in, and I need to start Chem IA. Tok Essay and IOC for English
I started IB 3 months ago and I have this problem that I stress about every grade thinking that it will affect my predicted grade with some % I also believe that predicted grades are more important for university application than actual exam final grades Is my thinking logical pls help :(((
i just ended my mandatory ib (pyp & myp) years and am now in 8th grade, i have to choose between IB and IGCSE and am stressing a lot about it. i’m leaning towards IB more and always have been but i’m really scared because either way, what if i’m making the wrong decision?
Does your quarter grades/semester grades go into your ib score? And also I never knew you could retake in exams and try again if you haven't done well!!
No, because IB scores are graded by actual markers from the IB, not your school’s teachers. Your school grades will usually affect your predicted grades though. Good luck❤️

@@KatieTracy how if you say that at the end of first year you were getting 4s and 3s
THANK YOU

How are we supposes to manage to do extracurriculars with IB?Or should we give more importance to ECs?
You look gorgeous 💕
Hiii I just did my year 1 IB exams, and I feel like I'll fail.. I've been told I do well in class and I'm often questioned when I mess up tests. I seem to mess up tests even if I know my content..I tried a bunch of times improving, I thought I did but I messed up my end year exams for year 1. I was trying to console myself saying I have another year but I was told our predicted will be based on these scores... I'm shook and really worried...is there anything I can do??
I’m in dp1 and I have a 72 in bio hl, idk how to improve it 😐😐 I try my best to study well, but I think I’m studying wrong
I'm in dp1 too. Struggling a lot :'(
Hello I am year 2 ib student. Your best recourse would be your book supplied to you and all notes that u take. Many people ignore the textbook which is generally a mistake because it has a lot of content that is beneficial. I would also take past papers on that specific course online.
Bio HL is my favorite course, i suggest looking at the study guides (u can find online) and really reviewing those concepts in depth
I’m in the first year of IB and I was doing well (all 6s) until my end of year exams where I got much lower (mostly 4 and 5 due to bad mental health at the time). I know I can do well in mocks and finals so are those bad scores a big deal when applying to universities?
this is the same with me - i’m in my first year as well and at the beginning i was doing really well however we have just completed end of years and i failed most of my exams due to bad mental health and i feel completely crushed by it. i wish you all the best you can 100% do it!!
very inspirational ma'am
You look sooo gorg with that lipstick! Filippino beauty for suree
I was in pre IB for my freshman and sophomore year and then left because I hated it and got anxiety and depression because of it so I transferred to a different school for my junior and senior year that allowed me to get my AA when I graduated high school 🤙🏼
Can you explain PRE-IB cause Im in 8 grade and got accepted into it for my 9 grade year
Antonio Street it may change per school but pre ib for us was your freshman and sophomore years and they just prepare you for you actual IB courses which are your higher and lower level courses that you will take the exams for.
Basically, (you won't like the answer) work hard.
So I just got a 1 on my math AA HL entrance test. First test of the quarter of the IB year.
I started IB 3 months ago and I have this problem that I stress about every grade thinking that it will affect my predicted grade with some %
I also believe that predicted grades are more important for university application than actual exam final grades
Is my thinking logical pls help :(((
Edit: replied to someones comment actually must be weird seeing ‘same’ 😅
i just ended my mandatory ib (pyp & myp) years and am now in 8th grade, i have to choose between IB and IGCSE and am stressing a lot about it. i’m leaning towards IB more and always have been but i’m really scared because either way, what if i’m making the wrong decision?
What about year one final exam for the first semester?
Watching this before my IB exams in just over a week and PGs are 5s... UGHHH
I failed too but I keep fighting hard now
YESS we love to hear that!!👏🏼
I’m still failing
i study IB in Hong Kong. i just wanna state its not possible to get a 7 in Chinese
Ah. Until you do it👀
how do u deal w loneliness or is that not a thing
Currently struggling to pretty much redo my EE one week away from the deadline :(
Also Art HL guidance?
I got my IB diploma. 2020 was a bad year to graduate in IB. 2/10 do not recommend.
Hi Katie. I am currently doing my first year IB , how did you prepare for your EE?
I’m in college now but why is this somehow still relatable lmao
How do you find out how many points give you a 7?
what was your predicted?
Dude no worries... you’ll get it right next time💙
hmmm interesting... I failed my first exam in Econ HL also and pulled out a 2... it's cause I didn't know how to structure the answer :(
Does your quarter grades/semester grades go into your ib score? And also I never knew you could retake in exams and try again if you haven't done well!!
No, because IB scores are graded by actual markers from the IB, not your school’s teachers. Your school grades will usually affect your predicted grades though. Good luck❤️
Any tips for Computer Sci?
It's like youtube knows my grades now...
