Thanks for watching everyone. A similar town is Laurel Run (another village still burning) video link here: ruclips.net/video/i-q2ki5odL4/видео.htmlsi=5fhfMvtBmLzbGFzs
It’s not bad enough that the people residents had to leave, and the town died, but the fact that vandals and slobs couldn’t leave the place in peace is a damn shame.
Nice video. I visit Centralia twice a year and it is always cloudy and dreary which adds to the atmosphere of the area. The other steam vents are located along a 200' section of cliffs off of Big Mine Run Rd just 1.5 miles east of the main intersection.
Thank you! I didn’t see anywhere safe to pull over in that area I think from what I remember? I also plan on visiting in the colder months! So far I’ve only been in the summer and the ground is extra hot I’d lbe curious to feel the ground temperature when it’s actually cold outside ?… thx so much for watching !
@@explore.evermore There are a couple of areas wide enough to pull over. You will easily see the steam in the winter. The steam is located where the cliffs start to diverge away from the road. The vents are about 50 feet (15m) from the road. The steam is only located near this small section of road. There are no more steam areas north nor south of this area. I checked with thermal imaging. There are also a couple more steaming vents at the top of the cliff including a steaming pipe. Just a mile and a half to the east near the halfway point between Big Mine Run Rd and Raven Run there is another underground fire. It is not known if it is an extension of the Centralia fire or a completely new one.
I live in Mount Carmel which is 4 miles away. I grew up here and It's tragic how a town is destroyed and Its people are forced to move. The stone wall with the steps was the old school.
It really sux and I feel for the town so deeply. Regarding the stone wall, I figured that! I couldn’t find an old photo of the school unfortunately…..Thanks for letting me know!❤️
My dad took us through there in the mid eighties. I was about 10 or 11. There were still a few dozen houses and a few businesses back then. Maybe 150 residents. Now about 5 or 6 in one or 2 houses. Sad.
Very sad! I wish at this day in age there would be something else or new they could do to help Centralia…are they even still assessing and reassessing it? Or is it just completely forgotten and left for dead in a sense…(…not a question for you in particular- I am just asking if anyone watching this possibly knows if anything is being done as of date regarding the rehabilitation of Centralia?) :( ☹️😢
first it just didnt start in the coal mines it started in a garbage dump and it went unchecked till it burned into the mines the reason i know is because i had family that lived there and i was there many times while the fires burned and destroyed most of the town
Thank you so much for sharing that! The more we can all learn about this the better. That’s a very significant piece of information! I try to visit the area (as well as Laurel Run) a few times a year, as it always makes me feel grounded and emotional.
It’s really is a memorial. I always feel at peace when I visit there. I also know a few fossil hunters that take their kids their…alot of people have so much love for that place. Unfortunately there is no way to keep the vandals out but maybe one day - let’s hope for Centralia to make it back on the map. ❤️
How do you get to the other end of the highway .i was there about a month ago and walked the mounds of dirt then turned around . Im going back in about 2 weeks im thinking
The steps that you saw with the wall on either side of them I'm guessing used to be a house and those steps took you from the sidewalk up to the front lawn and then the house itself. I took a trip there last April. It was eerie to see how a town that was so lively turn into a literal ghost town.
Its been a few years since I was up there. My dad grew up in Shenandoah. Ive wondered, around the time when the fire began if the bodies of the recently buried were cooking. 🤔
there are multiple underground coal fires in Pennsylvania. Most of the state is s atol a large coal deposit, and there are coal fires in some neighbouring states. It's frightening to think of the possibility they could merge into one gigantic blaze
Well my interest is highly peaked, but I am the furthest from being a palaeontologist BUT since I’m not too far away from Centralia, I’m gonna have to check again….and again…what do I dig with? 😭
I’m interested in how many miles do you walk on these adventures and have you encountered any wild animals. I hope you are not alone on your adventures.
@@VictoriaReginaAnn I’m not alone! Also have a dog! Thanks for asking! And yes, lots and lots of miles. It’s a perfect way to squeeze in your exercise!!! ❤️❤️
@@qbrown4239 not that much. that wasn’t so bad. It’s pretty hot the ground there so I drove around also. But walking it was pretty hot 😢. You can feel the heat coming from underneath the ground it’s wild.
Yes from what I saw and from what I am told, there is somewhere between 5-10 residents. I saw one trailer home as well. I would love to interview them - hoping to do that one day!
It definitely feels like that….and things are really coming into perspective…even with todays earthquakes in NJ……nothing is no longer certain…nothing is in our control….we’re just visitors here, right?
@explore.evermore we are just visitors. I'm from NJ, too, northwestern Gloucester County. A buddy and I went there back in November, 2019. Graffiti highway hadn't been covered yet. We found fossilized plants in a pile in front of the graveyard next to where Graffiti highway was, old route 61. Stupidly, I left it there. We counted 5 houses then, I have a photo of 1 of them. I personally thought the movie was awful 😂😂

According to the satellite image the place was very green in the 80s. Thanks for the video btw!
Thanks for watching I really appreciate it! There is still a lot of forestry throughout- although it feels like a desert 🌵.

Sad place. Whats gets me are the photos and videos of Christmas time in that town
That’s very sad. I also just spoke to someone who told me this place could actually be burning for another 500 years……😢
There is 1 house left with 5 or 6 residents
Thanks so much for the information. I thought I saw maybe a few but they could have been vacant I’m not too sure!
Great video. Thanks for an update on what it looks like now. I wonder if it would be easier to see on a bicycle.
A mountain bike yes. But the roads are so rough I wouldn’t recommend a regular bicycle. A motorcycle also! Thanks so so much for watching !

@@explore.evermore It makes me so sad to see how that town went when i knew it in its hay day it was so beautiful and a great place to visit
Good job; but it is sad to see others are not so respectful. The place is truly a memorial and a lesion to all about respecting nature!

Actually that’s a really really good 🤔💭💭…when I stuck my hand in an exposed vent it turned bloody red and super hot. So I’d be wondering. 👍

on the cliff if you go to the right part and dig under the rocks you can find fossilized plants

I tried searching everywhere! I believe there is one left off a highway coming towards the town but I have no idea where or how to find it!

The state removed most of the signage in attempt to reduce visitors
