Helen is one of my all-time favourites on PCBH - she's witty, funny and terrific company, as well as being a really good person!

pandoraamos1 Yes, Helen Smart comes across as a person who is wise to the world, not surprised by the ups and downs of life, happy with her work as a pro and good at it too! She has her own "business"--- makes her money and keeps on truckin'! :)
She doesn't get involved with crazy people -- crims or not ---- to the extent that she lets them bring her down and ruin her life! She can be tough and practical when the need arises....so she is no pushover! Some of those other women should take a gander, wake up, and ....get Smart! LOL

Alan Mclay Ted Douglas! What a creep! With his lame ass ways, he was probably hoping for a "freebie" from Helen! Even if he offered to pay, Helen should tell him "Hell no! --- I may be a pro....but I do have....standards!" LOL
Alan Mclay I agree,really was one of the funniest, especially when Helen grabbed his arse. The look on Powell's face watching them. Priceless

Marcus Elliott Po Face did have her moments. I really liked her character. She went though some good storylines
Ted Douglas isn’t a creep with any lame arse ways hoping for a freebie, nor would he pay for her services either. Helen was flirting with him, but she’s always desperate for a man and she’s always sexually aroused.
This series goes from serious high drama, to comedy to high-camp. It's brilliant.
Nola is my favourie villain of the show. She is even more ruthless than Marie Winter.
Nola IS a great villain. Never liked Winter - too fake, tough talk over-done. Lou was annoying but liked her better than Winter.
jiggarypokery Top villain Nola....yessir! She really gave Bea a run for her money! Since Nola does not want to be "Top Dog" -- Bea could not handle or bully a person who has absolutely NOTHING to lose -- and everything to gain by working the established system to her own advantage. Just see how Nola has been able to play BOTH Fergie the Freak AND Bea! LOL
In any case, Bea was smart enough to see that without the total support of the other prisoners her position was not sustainable....so when Bea saw an opportunity, she cashed in her chips and took a walk! Either that....or somebody was going to have to DIE! Frankly, my money would have been on ruthless Nola landing on her feet! Just saying.... :)
Absolutely, Nola in my opinion was Bea's toughest rival amongst the prisoners and very entertaining to watch. I agree with what Staayyyve said re Marie, def too much talk, she didn't have one full on fight with Bea ever.. I have heard that the reason for the Bea escape storyline in 83 was because Val Lehman didn't want to be involved in the Alan/Ellen Farmer storyline (where a male prisoner is mistaken for a female prisoner) because she thought it was too far fetched.
jiggarypokery I agree Nola is the best inmate villain so far Winter was annoying after it turned out that even Hazel and Margo (another annoying tough character could get the better of her started off promising on her second run but soon got overshadowed by Sandy who was just a kid in comparison.
Toni McNally was a good villain but she was in the last time Bea was on the run by the time she got back McNally got written out. So they never had any good set twos.
I hope Nola pays Bea back if she ever comes back its just so unbelievable in a Prison of all places that Bea would win every fight

If I were Maxine, I would have started screaming my head off the minute The Freak tried dragging me to my cell all alone.

Maggie Kirkpatrick actually auditioned for the role of Vera. I think they based Joan on Vera in part. Remember the slicked back hair when she first joined the show? Very Vera looking.

Meg half quoting a Sex Pistol's lyric is definitely a nice touch. The punk movement was still in the public conscience when this aired.

If the film crew are wanting to record Laneys tattoos for a grim view of the prison then they should get photos of Lizzie, Joan, Po face and Nola all sat next to each other

Douglas is a sneaky swine, he doesn't do anything for nothing. Despite his claims, it was so darn obvious he really did have an ulterior motive for the improvements he was making within the prison. It was all just show for camera purposes. Its the same old tune in the end: "What the department give with one hand they take back with the other". Its always been that way before so no reason why it should be any different this time. I like Helen, she adds some spice to proceedings. One of the good things about her is that she comes in small measures so she never gets stale or boring.
8ballpoolking1 I couldn't stand Helen when she first showed up but she's become one of my favourite characters. Not having her in it all the time does help, and dropping her stupid accents has helped even more :)
Kay Woods I agree about the accents. There was one I found rather funny, but on the whole, you're right, they did get annoying. She is perfectly good enough as she is without them.

True, he did support Judy's endeavor with the halfway house, but in the past he seems only to have been concerned with the prison's regulations and the inmates' discipline. They're up to something for sure, ever since he revealed to Erica the new suggestions of the Department.
Ol' Ted is too busy trying to keep afloat in the grease his chin produces to know or do anything about the women and their welfare!Why does his chin/chops produce so much oil?I think as veteran PCBHers we have a right to know???🤔🤔🤔🇬🇧♥️♥️♥️🐊🐊🐊
I feel sorry for Alan and his parents it's evident Laney is an emotional drain.
She seems unable to function without them being joined at the hip. Weird.

I know Bea has escaped, but usually that would include a side story of her time on the outside. I'm guessing that the escape was just an excuse for Val to take time off from the show. I'm looking forward to Bea's return
in her interview with 'prisoner' she said she didn't agree with the male story line & refused I think! too be a part of it, so she had time out
Bea should watch the Wentworth remake. Im sure there would be many upsetting storylines. It would have been funny if the Freak processed him. Off topic but love it when Davo puts the Freak in her place.
On Talking Prisoner, Val stated she thought the storyline was ridiculous and asked to be written out while it was playing out.
Her original scenes were hastily re-written and given to Helen Smart - there was a production in-joke where Erica says to Helen, "You sound _remarkably_ like Bea Smith. Are you the women's new spokesperson in her absence?".
Lizzie: "Con-jungle visits." Hilarious. Nola really is a seasoned crim. I don't think there isn't any level she wouldn't stoop to. She's a great baddie. I miss Margo though. Mind you, Nola would buy her and sell her in the same street.
One of Nola's more redeeming characteristics (and she does have a few) is that she is prepared to use Ferguson for her own ends, just as much as Ferguson is prepared to use her. A proper criminal mind. Not like the character that the writers are intent on portraying Bea Smith as. 'A poor put upon crim.. with a heart of gold..' Bea is positively dislikeable by this point in the series. Which is probably why she (Val) quits soon after this.

Government policy in Australia has for a very long time been rehabilitation over punishment. If people like Joan don't like it, they should work somewhere else.

No I don't agree .... people end up in prisons for various reasons. Most come from broken homes and families, victim of circumstance or some are even straight up innocent. Boryana Kasabova that is a a typical generalization statement stemming from pure ignorance.

Here's a fact about the cast. The late Betty Bobbit said that someone was stealing their wine from their lockers. They could have an after work drink. They locked it too but the person kept breaking into the lockers and stealing the wine. Betty said Sheila smiled one day and told them "I'll stop it." Putting her finger onto the side of her nose. The next morning she brought in a full bottle, stuck it into her locker and sure enough, the next day it was gone. Sheila burst out laughing and told them she got her husband to pee into the bottle. The wine thief probably took a swallow and got the surprise of their life. Betty said the theft stopped then.

I know Nola Mackenzie is a maniac, but what a job from Carol Skinner. She made the character and it’s her skill to make us believe the character and hate her too. Carol skinner fantastic actress. As are a lot of these women all stage trained.

The Lizzy & Maxey double act is fantastic.You must admire Maxey for making a stand against the freek. But at what price.. Bea isn't here. Nola's brewing up the big killin.. I had forgot bout this storyline about the Lady with the Tattoo's. Oh how times have changed.
But the way this show made look as if she was forced to have the Tattoos. She choose to have the tattoos and she picked what she wanted. Nobody held a gun to her head. It was her own personal choice.
I have a few tattoos and l personally choose them. 3 tiny hearts down the side of my right wrist, On my right wrist l have my husbands name with a big 3D butterfly and on my Left Wrist I have my daughters name " Hayley" with tiny Butterflys. I don't regret getting them done either.
The best advice is pick a design you know you will love coz its with you forever & Before Having tattoo done - Think it over for few months 1st. Wait till u know that you are 100% sure 1st.
But this girl with the tattoos any one would think she was at gun point. She choose to get them done.Nobody forced her. She did that on her own merit. so why on earth is everybody feeling sorry for her. its her own fault. So don't be feeling sorry for her.

Nola does have some good points. The department does muck around with the prisoners. I wonder if the public was really concerned with prisons. In the states we don't give a stuff about prisons. Once the criminals are locked up then they are forgotten.
Why do some posters keep leaving the exact same message in every episode?

Helen Smart grabbing Paul Douglas's butt made the whole episode worthwhile. Of course all the big guns are missing. I'd love to see them interview Bea, Chrissie and especially Margo. That would be interesting ..Meg & Colleen deliver a great comedy act line at 32:25.

*in later episodes a rookie Screw called Officer Adams broke prisoner Michelle BRUMBY's cassette player and Officer Adams was forced to replace the cassette player.

That reminds me, in the 100's era of Bea saying to Doreen, Judy and Lizzie if Sandy Hamilton isn't a plant (a spy for the department), she would walk to Bourke (Bourke is a town in the north-west of New South Wales, Australia) in her bikini, which made Judy and Lizzie laugh and joke about it, and Bea wanted to change the subject on that and to return to the matter in hand. Haha! 😄

Maybe there was an election win for Labor in 1982, and the changes were implemented by the new Government after years of punitive Liberal rule.
The teacher won't work out. Look at the one that came with the tight trousers, he didn't work out, the others didn't either. The only one that worked was Karen Travers Miller. And the only reason she worked out was that her pupil, Frankie Doyle was in love with her. "I wonder what is for lunch today? I'm starving." Me to Maxie, "Beef stew and rice I'll just bet you." Someone got 100 tea bags. I guess she loves a cuppa every night. I thought Lizzie had a carton of Marlboro's? Then we see her with a whole different carton of some other brand.

Carole is a bloody good actor. She plays the Nola role with subtlety and is very convincing.
She isn't quite as ugly as all the comments suggest. Great addition to the cast.
I don't care how she looks but her character and "Nola" era is one of the best I think. Wish she was in it longer.

Like Douglas in this episode sums his character up perfectly and even then its evident to see that Ian Smith had a knack for comedy.
Interesting how the writers try and draw some kind of parallels between Bea and Ferguson both won't touch dope and won't tolerate dissent also Bea fits into Ferguson's uniform well.
Thought how Nola managed to get dope far fetched though at least they got to show the character in a lighter light.
Yeah, Ian Smith is one of the main writers too. His Ted Douglas role is just a bit on the side.
Can't remember all episodes but I'm not sure if she could get away with it she would. Maby she dose not want to sale to close to the wind.
