I started out with a mix of index ETFs, but I have been slowly purchasing more and more of these all-in-one portfolio funds, especially for my wife. It is hard to argue against a single fund with a low MER that has your risk level right in the title.
i know you didn't ask me but...as far as i can tell, if you hold dividend paying US etfs or stocks, the 15% withholding tax is taken right out of the dividend payment. i think this applies if you hold the stock or etf in your tfsa or unregistered account (be aware that USA and international stocks aren't eligible for the canadian dividend tax credit). if you hold the usa dividend paying etf or stock in your RRSP, the withholding tax might not apply. but my goole-fu is failing a bit here. hope this helps.
What are you thoughts on HGRO ? The ETF is not as popular as the others like VEQT / XEQT but I think in the long term it should outperform them. Instead of investing in the total market, it is using indexes like S&P 500, TSX 60 and NASDAQ 100.
Hi! The Horizon’s etf’s are a corporate type of ETF’s and as per their website they do not hold the stocks underlying their ETF’s rather than a guaranteed agreement with third parties, normally banks. Do you think this structure is safer than iShares or vanguard? What if these third parties don’t honor the agreement?
Toca is not talked about a lot. From portfolio visualizer backtest analyses, their.performance is similar to xeqt despite having bonds. Talk about TOCA too!
Great video! Love how you were so detailed about each one. When I first starting investing I bought into vgro, then bought into veqt, and then eventually moved into xeqt which I am still holding
I’m a complete newbie to the investing world, yes I found this video helpful and informal, in the long term I will find quarterly dividends, thanks for the educational videos
Hi Brandon, very much appreciate the opportunity to learn from you. Can you please explain the difference between the 2 BMO ETF's ZBAL & ZBAL.T and why and when 1 fund would be chosen for a portfolio over the other? Thanks for your time.
VGRO in my sons RESP, just started my RSP last year with ZGRO, managing our TFSA's with ZSP, ZCN, ZEA, ZEM, ZAG (roughly 20% ea) which cover similar to the GRO lines. Recently skimmed the top off each in our TFSA's to add another column for MNT to put some precious metals (gold) in there to protect a bit more from the coming crash.
Sup Brandon! Passive investor here. I got VEQT (all equity) and GEQT (ESG all equity). Thanks for the breakdown of thèse all-in-one ETF. I would love if you could talk in the future about the pros and cons of ESG investing. Cheers!
I chose XEQT for my RRSP and 10 years from retirement I will rebalance 50% XEQT 50% XGRO for a 90/10 portfolio. At retirement I will switch all to XGRO for an 80/20 portfolio.
I hear you, I’m retired now & looking at XGRO as split with bonds will cushion all equity of XEQT. I had similar two mutual funds (XEQT & XGRO) and they performed similarly, surprisingly but cost way too much in fees!
For my mom who is retired, I chose VRIF with a .32%MER and a 66% Equity/33%Bond ratio. It has given 4.5% yield monthly in the past 12 months. I think they achieve the higher yield with a higher proportion of BBB bonds. I noticed they have a 6% equity from emerging market, but when you include the bonds it goes up to 19%. I also buy some real estate for her (BRE and MREL), utilities international (HUTL), and covered call ETF (HYLD and HDIV). Also EIT. She wants income and has a high risk tolerance.
Can you make a video about AI ETFs? Looking for ones in Canadian funds, but it seems like they are mostly in USD. And you would you recommend buying these?
ETHI was doing very very well for me in share value but dividend is low. ZWC does well. I gotta say I like the covered calls for income but I understand that comes at a cost I share price… or so I have been told.
Is this still a good recommandation to hold Bonds to compensate Stock drops ? Nowadays, even Bonds suffer high losses , I have been losing 7-10 % last trimester on my HighYield Bonds MutualFund ... Am doing something wrong ? Also, quick question, XGRO/VGRO would better fit in a RRSP or a TFSA ? Thank you :)
Seems like the top 6 companies in these ETFs (Apple, RBC, TD, Enbridge) are all unethical/polluting companies, very sad. Still looking for that unicorn of ethical stocks/ETFs. Any suggestions?
Thanks Brandon! Great explanations of the etf's you provided. It's great to see the options at different levels of earning potential. As a very new investor, I truly appreciate it!!
Great video! Isn’t this the best way to invest? :) Hard to pick the winning stocks and studies show that 80-90% of the time, the people who pick stocks do not outperform the market. Thoughts?
Location 4:30 VGRO = Management Fee = 0.22% and MER = 0.24%. Total fees = 0.46% per year (Total $46.00 expense per year on an investment of $10,000.00) Am I correct in above calculation?
I’m thinking about putting some $ into some very balanced funds as I’m super conservative… With the market seemingly going down at this point mid June 2022 would you suggest a brand new investor hold on to cash a bit longer then buy when the stock prices decrease.. and if so can you make a video to help newbies figure out when is a good time to buy in?
The best time to buy is always now but you can dollar cost average (DCA). If you buy ZBAL, VBAL or XBAL you will have to hold to funds for at least 10 years. So you need to be sure you will not need the money until then.
Love the content and the video been watching for a while and have learned so much. Still a long way to go. I recently went into XEQT (35%) as well as VFV (65%) for my RRSP. I'm comfortable with the volatility and fluctuations. Living through the 08/09 recession taught me that.
Hey Brandon, I'm just wondering what you think of HGRO or ZGRO.. I like the look of ZGRO. I really like these ETF picks you have here, I'm also wondering what you think of diversifying and splitting up your money between one with bonds and one without... is there anything wrong with doing that? Great video by the way and thanks!
If I’m a new young investor, but I understand how to keep my emotions in check (because the market will go up even if the ‘down’ feels steep), is there any other disadvantage to being more aggressive with equity investments?
Your time horizon to grow your account as much as possible (assuming the market conditions are good, and you choosing the right companies at the right times) is much higher/longer then that of someone who is older than you. And you can also invest at lower amounts... whereas someone who is starting out at an older age will have to invest larger amounts at a time to get a portfolio size close to yours. Aka compounding
Hi Brandon I have been following your channel quite a while from Nova Scotia canada 🇨🇦 I’m very ambitious and hardworking, I have been struggling with making decisions on what to invest in. I created an account with Wealthsimple I’m being very cautious on what and where to invest in. Can you please help me more info. Regards Amadou Jallow

I'm 75% XEQT, 20% VFV, 5% random fun stocks in my TFSA.
Buy and hold for 20-35 years.
Xeqt all the way
VGRO was the 1st etf i bought when i started my TFSA, ended up selling it all and putting it towards XEQT
Was it a bad experience?
I started out with a mix of index ETFs, but I have been slowly purchasing more and more of these all-in-one portfolio funds, especially for my wife. It is hard to argue against a single fund with a low MER that has your risk level right in the title.
VGRO vs VFV?
I like XIC and XAW !!
11:00 - what is "consumer discretionary"?
Bought XGRO and XEQT today, then saw this video, good timing ;)
Not seeing the Investment academy link. Please share the link. Thanks

Any chance you can explain how does the USA tax withholding work for a basic Canadian investor that buys a index fund or ETF that holds USA companies?
i know you didn't ask me but...as far as i can tell, if you hold dividend paying US etfs or stocks, the 15% withholding tax is taken right out of the dividend payment. i think this applies if you hold the stock or etf in your tfsa or unregistered account (be aware that USA and international stocks aren't eligible for the canadian dividend tax credit). if you hold the usa dividend paying etf or stock in your RRSP, the withholding tax might not apply. but my goole-fu is failing a bit here.

From what I understant, people like to have more diversification and not less. Thats why they prefer to hold VEQT.

Man I m really confused as to why your bringing up all these bond options given that all experts agree they are no longer a smart diversification
ZAG is down 12.63% over 5 years. How will this protect me from market fluctuations?
Toca is not talked about a lot. From portfolio visualizer backtest analyses, their.performance is similar to xeqt despite having bonds. Talk about TOCA too!

Hi brandon.. just curious how US tax canadians for investing on xeqt etfs on rrsp or tfsa which holds mostly US.
I’m a complete newbie to the investing world, yes I found this video helpful and informal, in the long term I will find quarterly dividends, thanks for the educational videos
Have you checked out the Tangerine ETF portfolios? I like to hear you take on those.
Thoughts on Horizons ETFs, specifically HGRO?
Hi Brandon, very much appreciate the opportunity to learn from you. Can you please explain the difference between the 2 BMO ETF's ZBAL & ZBAL.T and why and when 1 fund would be chosen for a portfolio over the other? Thanks for your time.
looks like they're the same except zbal pays its distributions QUARTERLY and zbal-t pays distributions MONTHLY.
Been wanting to add some metals to my portfolio and currently looking at BTO, CEF, XGD or maybe even CGL. Any insight is appreciated.
Great video
Next do a video on the best 3 fund etf portfolios
Sup Brandon! Passive investor here. I got VEQT (all equity) and GEQT (ESG all equity). Thanks for the breakdown of thèse all-in-one ETF. I would love if you could talk in the future about the pros and cons of ESG investing. Cheers!
You probably shouldn't invest in ESG funds as they will probably not reflect your values correctly and will reduce your expected returns.
XEQT Gang!
Great video, thanks!
Instead of Zbal, why not a 1 year GIC @3.02 % at EQ bank. Minus the MER isn't it the same return minus the risk?
I don't use bonds at all presently, and prefer covered call etf's paying 8% or 9%
I chose XEQT for my RRSP and 10 years from retirement I will rebalance 50% XEQT 50% XGRO for a 90/10 portfolio. At retirement I will switch all to XGRO for an 80/20 portfolio.

This is exactly what I’m looking to invest in these days. Thank you for making this video!
Great video Brandon! Anyone know of a good 90% equity 10% bond all-in-one fund?
ETHI was doing very very well for me in share value but dividend is low. ZWC does well. I gotta say I like the covered calls for income but I understand that comes at a cost I share price… or so I have been told.

What about current market context? Everyone is freaking out.

Great video as usual. Would be curious to know your thoughts about BMO's new all in one etf : ZEQT. It's slightly different than XEQT and VEQT.
You forgot VT bro. Total world index and very low fees
Thanks Brandon! Great explanations of the etf's you provided. It's great to see the options at different levels of earning potential. As a very new investor, I truly appreciate it!!
Is this video still relevant in 2024?? I am a beginner who's thinking about starting investments through ETF's.
great video Brandon. I love these ETF's, but I'm still going with individual funds. thanks again!!
Xeqt

@@funkspinna Thanks a million! Much appreciated!! :)
The channel owner never bothered to answer my question - that shows their professionalism.
So would it be worth investing in both VGRO and XEQT?
VGRO is 80% stock and 20 % bonds, VEQT is 100% stock. If you buy 50-50, you would have 90% stock and 10% bonds.
I’m thinking about putting some $ into some very balanced funds as I’m super conservative…

wow thats a lot of risk. what if you're closer to retirement?
Cheers to the Biggest growth ETF in Canada VGRO. Runner up XGRO
Both good options

I’m super new but can someone rate my etf collection
VFV
ZWB
ZCN
and then I have individual stock of suncor
Criticisms comments all welcome
