I personally pack a USGI Poncho , a 10' X 10' Lightweight Ripstop Tarp , Mosquito Headnet along with Bug Jacket , And Goretex Rain Jacket and Rain Pants in my Backpack . But I've also lived outside as a homeless transient for more than 6 months at a time , multiple times in my past , travelling across Canada . The cold and wet can kill , as in other parts of the world I'm sure , the bugs will drive you nuts , the weather and disasters are increasingly cataclysmic along with crazy heatwaves . Ounces = Pounds and Pounds = Pain ; But If You Can't Take The Pain Don't Play The Game , At Least That's What THEY Say ! ! !

I feel attacked with the fun sized comment! Haha! I rock my USGI poncho, my military issue gortex, or my Columbia packable jacket.
Not my intention- sometimes I wish I was “fun size” 😂.. I would have the perfect solution!

Yup, the sweat is real, no beating getting wet in the summer rain, especially with Florida's humidity. I used to keep a Bundeswehr rain poncho in my college backpack, which had wonderful durability, but it does trap heat. Silicone impregnated fabrics might be the best option but I didn't know about it at the time.
I’ve run it all- from one end of the spectrum to the other. Some methods/gear work better than others but it all comes down to what you’re doing and the environment you’re in. In the summer, I welcome the rain just because I need the cool down and helping with the smell 😂
Given the heat wave this summer, I'd rather be soaked and cool.

Hiking I have done the poncho and the rain jackets. My legs always got wet. Just part of it. EMS, jackets for the win. If course you get wet below the waist but that's why you keep spare pants and boots at the station.

I use Habit outdoor clothing which has a d.w.r.treatment, for the woods, Columbia for town. I do own a couple of ponchos. Yeah they're saunas for sure. But I like the fact that I can make an improvised shelter also. Looking to make a purchase from USGI for my other bag.
Right on. I go through phases and switch at different times of the year. Even though a poncho isn’t an excellent shelter for me, it’s still better than NOT having one for sure 👍🏻

While serving in Viet Nam humping the hills and valleys when raining, you had to make a choice, put on the poncho and be wet from sweat or the rain. Rain smells better .

The alone experience than i have with a poncho, it was during my army time in the 80's. And it was a crap.
Now, i use some french military vest and a dutch army rain trourser . That don't made me shit at all and it's always dry under and this is breathable . And you ca do all you whant with this.
Even riding the motorbike, that don't make troubles.

The one big negative I see with using a poncho as a shelter in the rain is this. What if you need to go out of the shelter? Say you need to find more wood or relieve your bladder. I carry a 10'X10' tarp as well as a poncho. I also carry rain pants for when it's really coming down.

If I'm just rockin the Savotta buttpack I use the Onewind extra long poncho but when taking a pack I use the Marmot minimalist, both great pieces of gear! 😁👍

Helikon-Tex is a good place to start as far as ponchos go.. As far as rain boots go, there’s so many it really depends on preference.. Thanks for watching!

I personally hide under the cover of my husband…. Unless it is too hot, then im soaked praying for wind, until the wind gets too cold, then i stick my freezing wet body back under the safety and warmth of my husband. Thank God he loves me😂

Dont forget, bad weather is mostly windy! Dont use it on a bike, in a distance you look a sailing boat!
Also on a bike it can get stuck in the brakes of chain etc
But i love it for unexpected storms being on foot in a daypack in the field!

@@FueltheFires both, i have experience on biking that it hurts when the poncho gets stuck in the gear/ brake or wheel going downhill

It is an expensive piece of kit. I would add it’s certainly for a reason- the material itself is very pricey to begin with and it’s an incredible design of the highest quality..

my choice is the poncho, of course... but like I said, I always carry an umbrella with me too...
[ battle-brella] useful in so many ways... a door to a ''poncho-shelter'' among them... lately I found another use too [pay attention here JJ...] I added mylar on the inside [spray-glue] and a piece of camo-net on the outside!... it's still my lil ''battle-brella'' [the term is used by the Australian army, is not mine...] but it's also a quickly deployed ''hide-out'' against thermal and night-vision [normal vision too...] The problem with mylar and anti-thermal protection is that it shouldn't touch your body... and everybody's using all kinds of material to work as a barrier, making it stiff, and unwearable, but the ''battle-brella'' solves this problem... you keep it above you, if there's a drone, you hide behind it if there's a threat on the ground level...and btw, my battlebrella is all frame carbon-fiber and stainless steel connections... built to last! [I wanted to share my lil project with you, and you gave me the opportunity, thnx mate!...]

I've told you I'm working on something you'll find interesting... many ppl try to use Mylar against thermal but they all come up with something heavy, and stiff... even the Israelis made something ''wearable'' but with their hot weather is unbearable... I found a poncho ''ghillie suit'' [the leafy type that's just a camo mosquito net and leaves ] and I also bought a standard camo mylar poncho, and working on ideas to keep it off my body... I ended up using bits of sponge as spacers... to keep everything lightweight and flexible... I made a ''poncho'' out of mosquito net, glued the sponge bits on it [1 inch high, 3 inches apart], and then glued the mylar poncho over that to create a ''3-layered, 3D'' poncho '' and the 4rth layer [the Ghillie poncho] just covering everything so it can be used alone... the all thing was okay, wearable, anti-IR, visual and thermal, but to much work to build, and then the umbrella came as a fast and easy way out... after all the ''movement'' is the only thing you can't hide... making it ''wearable'' was the wrong way to go...
Battle-Brella'' can be the way to go... mine is all carbon fiber, 59 inches wide,
doubles as a walking stick, as a spear [arrow-tiped, silicon cover over it], and... works as an umbrella too... I can even strap it on my backpack, or vest [anything with Molle actually] using a simple fishing rod holder... so I don't need to hold it in the rain....

I have a rubber military poncho, its pretty durable, i think they are more reliable than the thin rip stop ones ..whats your take on ther rubber military poncho
I absolutely love my Vietnam era poncho- so durable! Yes, I think it’s better in that respect but much heavier to carry and hotter to wear.. I did wear mine for many many years before I retired it.. Great piece of kit to last a long time 👍🏻
