    Weird people love Ween. This is a band you pretty much have to listen to 10 or 12 tunes from, at least, and then you'll figure out no two songs sound alike. You got your ballads, your Prince-like tunes, a taste of some country on one album, on another there's an aquatic theme (which inspired Spongebob Squarepants), and then there's some funk, then pure psychedelia. It's a super fun trip, please check out more. I love Ween!

      I was helping my brother move fromhis house to an apartment or somewhere in 1994 I think, and I was catching boxes that he was throwing up into the truck. There was a cassette tape playing that was a mixtape from his friend. Polla asada came on, and being slightly stoned, I was immediately hooked. It didn't take 10 or 12 songs, or even listens. I flew back to college the next day, and went to the used record store, and bought every ween album they had. One of my teachers was a Frank Zappa fan, and we traded music throughout my college time. I feel so lucky to have been in the back of that truck when Pollo asada was playing. It's literally changed my life. Years later when I was an acrobat with Cirque du Soleil, I sat next to a clown who introduced himself to me by telling me I "walked funny". We ended up sitting next to each other in the dressing room and I was listening on my headphones to ween. He was the head clown in this Cirque du Soleil show and was very intimidating to a lot of the cast, especially my roommate, who was his understudy. He had his own $3,000 stereo system in the dressing room. Five minutes after I sat down next to him, he asked me what I was listening to because I had my headphones in and I told him it's nothing you would like. He said take out the CD let's pop it in. And because he was so intimidating I did, and I played the mollusk. We listened to the entire album, while doing our makeup, and then after the first show, he popped in a Frank Zappa album. He wasn't intimidating to me after that. We became great friends and shared things like koyaanisqatsi and lots of jam band material that I was into and David glass an opera stuff that he was very into. But the point is that we took me down this road and I met so many people and learn so much more about music that I never knew about because of them.

    This is, no joke, possibly the best rock album of the 2000s. And Ween are certainly among the best three or so bands of their generation. All of their albums would make fantastic full-length reactions, especially this, The Mollusk, and White Pepper, plus their Live in Chicago DVD, which is up there with Stop Making Sense and Last Waltz as far as iconic rock concert films go, for me.

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins Год назад +3

      Agreed. Live in Chicago is IMO great "entry level" Ween. As is typical of their live shows the music sounds more "normal" than on the albums, and it's a good live performance. "Normal" mostly meaning Gener's vocals are not processed beyond recognition.

    • @MagusMirificus
      @MagusMirificus Год назад +2

      @@sootikins It also, like, lets you know they're a rock band. And then the records suddenly make more sense, because you remember there was a time where rock bands didn't feel the need to affirm a specific subgenre aesthetic with every song, but were nonetheless very sincerely dedicated to a very specific musical ethos without deviation. They might bury you in an avalanche of metal or skip along to some goofy folk ditty, but beneath it all there is always the staunch dedication to the basic values of psychedelic rock n' roll: freedom, fun, creativity, mind-expansion, love, blues, salvation.

    I remember that I saw Ween play at Bonnaroo but I don’t recall anything about seeing them. Weird totally fits in that with the vibe of that festival and I dig it when I’m that frame of mind. I didn’t mind this but it felt stagnant almost like I kept waiting for it to open up more or something. Kinda avant-garde.

    • @MagusMirificus
      @MagusMirificus Год назад +4

      It's very much deliberately monotonous in a way that borrows from avant-garde music; that's just their chosen aesthetic for this song because it's a dark, confrontational song. Ween are a gigantic rainbow of wildly different musical colors, and most of their songs sound nothing like this, or like each other, for that matter.

    TL/DR: This is a long and deeply personal rant that you don't need to read. II you do, it's all on you. Thanks.
    I've been a Ween fan since first hearing "Pollo Asada" in 1994. Please listen to more ween and post videos of some of their incredible music. I know that they don't make new music together these days, but back around 2000, they were my favorite band. In fact Dean Ween (Michael Melchiondo Jr.) called me and left a message on my phone answering machine (remember this was 1999 or 2000). I called him back and he said that he was shocked that a fan of the ban was a world class athlete (I was an Olympic hopeful and National champion on 2 of the six events in gymnastics at the time). I was also a huge fan of Ween, so they offered to create T-shirts with some athletic or gymnastics based theme and sell them on th tour they were just starting that Fall, with most of the proceeds going to me and my training.
    I made it to the Olympic Trials, and was expected to make the team, being one of the US's best chances to win a medal. When I arrived at the hotel in Boston, there was a package waiting for me, and it was four unique "Boognish" patches embroidered in different sizes and colors. I wore one of the patches for the team picture session of the 18 people competing for one of the 6 places on the Olympic team in 2000.
    I was pulled aside by the Head of USA Gymnastics and escorted to a private room and met the local head of Texaco, a major sponsor of USAG. He told me that all images needed for us to be in identical clothing. My choice was to wear the ween patch or forfeit my position on the US National Team.
    Today, in retrospect, I would have worn the patch, but instead I put it back in my bag and went on to being the 6th place gymnast at the 2000 Olympic Trials for the US until the 4th event where I made a slighy mistake which actually ended in a big mistake, and then an even bigger mistake, and I ended up landing the wrong way and destroying my knee--torn everything, knee cap split in half, meniscus and cartilage torn apart. Thankfully none of the ACL, MCL, LCL ligaments were damaged, so it only meant surgery and 6 months of Physical Therapy to get to a decent state.
    At least I can dance at Ween shows again. Dean never got back to me after my9 tragic [disaster at the Olympic trials] (ruclips.net/video/gPaKORNxm6c/видео.html). Don't click on that if you have a queasy stomach. I wish I'd come out with more that a Boognish patch (I stupidly offered the other three to a Ween Podcast, but I really only need one).If I hadn't broken my knee, there's a chance that Ween Athletics could have generated revenue,, maybe covered some of my medical costs...maybe even kept the band together. Fuck. I broke up Ween.
    Obviously I know I didn't break up Ween. US Gymnastics did. Did you hear about that guy Larry Nassler? I can't believe that I went to a half-dozen meets where he was head doctor. He even taped my ankle once.
    Sorry for the rant, I just felt it was necessary.

    Is this a theme from some American film/tv programme for infants/small children? If so that would excuse the "music". Lyrically it's so ambiguous that some will try and give deep meaning where it's just drivel
    Dan thought the same as me about the children The deep vocals were a poor imitation of Godley and Creme for me.
