- Everything will end. Even the universe. But in a future so far away that it defies description, there will still be light and therefore a chance for life. It will be around White Dwarfs, the corpses of stars. But even they will fade one day..

Hi
:)
hi
Why is it pinned it’s been after a year it was uploaded
@Nathan Weatherly ツ
Imagine making a wish to live forever.
Then imagine watching this video right after.
HORRY SHEETO
If you wouldn't be able to feel pain, according to some theories it wouldn't be that bad
Instant regret
You would be floating around in darkness for eternity...
'Eventually Kars stopped thinking'
Poor people who will have history exams at that stage of our civilization.
christianbro2 Jesus...
if there are going to be exams during that stage please i would rather kill my self
christianbro2 holy shit ur right but I think they would just keep the important events and not every single detail
If humanity exists for that long, we'll probably master genetic engineering or cyber tech and make ourselves so fucking brainy that remembering every single historical fact will be a breeze even for the village idiot.
Poor people who will have history exams 100 years from now. All the dank memes and crippling depression.
I bet it'll be easier later on as we realize entire history of humanity at that point can't fit into human brain.
Maybe brain implants though?... directly transferring knowledge to our brain etc.
the fact that the red dwarf can last up to trillions of years and they became a white dwarf and last again of trillions of years is just amazing
And if I understand correctly, then they become a black dwarf and pretty much last longer than the 2 previous stages and then some
@@greatgolfer23 Correct
@@greatgolfer23 the black dwarf stage takes absurdly long to end
repeat the 2 previous stages a trillion times and black dwarves will still not have turned to iron
@@greatgolfer23 then the universe restarts in an endless cycle of birth and death
If humanity somehow survives that long, our distant descendants can just huddle around them and keep on for trillions of years... and maybe even after that if we manage to extract energy out of black holes. Even that won't last forever, but it will last for a looooong long time.
“Right now, universe is filled with stars, and we have enough time to visit them one day”
Universe expansion: well, we’ll see about that
Our local group of galaxies will remain within reach.
@@Crashandburn999 And maybe we can expand from those?
Well, it depends.
The expansion of the Universe doesn’t really affect galaxies themselves(because I believe Kurzgesagt was talking about nearby stars), because they are held together by a gravitational force, which we believe is caused my dark energy or dark matter.
In exchange, stars are close. The quickest way to get to Alpha Centauri would be through sails powered by ground-based laser propulsion, reaching Proxima b in around 20 years. This is so short, in the universal timescale, that we might have expanded beyond the Orion spur in a few thousand years.
But, if you’re talking about stars in other galaxies, even travelling at the speed of light, it would take you billions of years to reach Andromeda, because of the expansion of the Universe.
@@condor5912 it's only held together by gravity. Dark matter is an explanation why there gravity seems to appear stronger in the galaxy than can be explained by visible matter. Dark energy is used as an explanation why the universe's expansion is accelerating
@@Vicioussnakeboy eventually the rest of the observable universe will be so far away that they move away faster than you could catch up at speed of light and later they'll vanish from the sky

Born in time that we may understand the mind, and therefore, be truly happy at the deepest levels, in this very body, in this very life. Does that help?
Born too late to see the Big Bang. Born too early to see the universe die. Born just in time to play Kerbal Space Program.
That's nice. I just finished playing some KSP before I came over here to see this. Oh the chances of everything.
MechanicPluto24 your goddamn right I was
Amen, brother.
I don't even play KSP... yet.
Nah fam elite dangerous is the greatest space sandbox out there
MechanicPluto24 the Big Bang was about 13,000,000,000 years ago. The end of the universe is unknown.
Theoretically, when humanity still has massive reserves of dyson sphere energy, they could set brown dwarfs or other massive gaseous forms in motion to collide and create new stars.
Neat
If you have that much energy you might as well *use it* instead of trying to make new stars with a process that you'd only lose energy through.
@@eachone9220 You wouldn't use it for energy production, you'd use it as a battery, or if you needed a star in a strategic position for whatever reason.
@@thecow5397 doesn't make much sense. Would make a neat premise for a sci fi book though.
Well... Extrapolating that far ahead we wouldn't even be human anymore. But you're right, assuming we made it THAT far (which is really hard to imagine!) and became a Type IV Civilization... I guess we could do a lot of things. Tunnel to another Universe... Perhaps even create our own bubble Universe... And yes, transmute dead degenerate matter in black dwarfs back into hydrogen to kick off new star formation...
As Type IV... We could practically do anything! But we currently got our work cut out for us... Stuck at Type 0.7x (or thereabouts) we are dangerously close to a threshold which will either transition us to Type I or... Type 0 (I.e. Extinction!)
Imagine being last in absolute darkness full by blackholes
This idea gives me the chills
(Sorry for my bad english)
If I understand the idea of the expanding universe, it wouldn't even be "full" of black holes. It would be endlessly empty, with black holes scattered across the universe at unfathomable distances from eachother. It'd just be almost complete emptiness. That's terrifying to imagine.
There is another video on this channel about the Penrose process, a theoretical means by which energy can be extracted from black holes to power a civilisation long after the heat death of the universe.
You say "the chills"? Good, because that means you have begun to grasp the difference between our everyday world of people, cars, potatoes, planets and our sun and the awesome nature of stars, neutron stars, black holes and the long-term future of our universe. Most people never get even a glimpse of this difference. Good for you!
@@jacobblumin4260 if you are talking to me i will be very thankful
That's kind of you
My point is that you cant see black holes and our universe will no longer have sources of light in the next billions years. Therefore it will become sooo dark .
And let's dont talk about how terrifying black holes are.

Ya just slightly missed the joke.....
Anyone feels empty now ?
It's so dark thinking about it
Ricky Bravo Yeah, when I first learned about this I kinda did, and it made me realize that the way the fundamental laws of the universe work have consequences, but then again it's not something you and I have to worry about. Way, way before this humanity will have to deal with the death of the sun in 5 billion years, and before that with possible meteorite impacts, like the one that made the dinosaurs go extinct, and before that with the crazy climate changes the planet will go through from now until the death of the sun. I think humanity can survive these things... unless we end up killing ourselves in nuclear wars or something haha.
as weird as it is, I actually feel humbled and honored with this knowledge. 😂 Words can't explain the wonder of being aware of something infinitely bigger than yourself, being part of it and witnessing it in real time. The universe may die one day but for us it might as well be infinite. Ahh idek I can't explain it
you think that humanity can even survive that long? That's cute.
Ricky Bravo if you want to really feel empty watch the Real Life Lore video on the universe
Love how Kurzgesagt manages to give you an existential crisis and still ending on a positive note
I used to be bothered by the finity of life, but I'm not too worried any more. I feel okay with my own mortality and I quite like that there'll be no more wars one day, even though there'll also be no more music. Let's enjoy the ride and be decent.
@@Molybdaenmornell Dw devs will fix the mortality bug in the next patch.
@@Jeffy-331 I will start by saying that I, too, have a positive outlook on life. Having said that, I see about 5 bugs and can only envision the defeat of one of them:
1.) biological aging -- possibly fixable
2.) Lethal accidents and diseases. There's no such thing as safety and the longer you live the higher the cumulative chance of dying violently or of sickness, even without aging. As the duration of life approaches infinity, violent accidents become a virtual certainty, no matter how unlikely they are in a given period of time.
3.) Food scarcity. If people keep being born and no-one dies of old age or accident, people will eventually die due to food scarcity. This is true even if we colonise space, because population would rise exponentially but the amount of space available only increases polynomially with time for any given speed of exploration.
4.) Death of the sun. Nothing we can do about that except flee the solar system, but the same will happen in any other one.
5.) Heat death of the universe.
I will not rule out that there is an afterlife in a form not subject to laws of physics, but I have no reason to believe that there is any life after my death except that of other people. And that is something, isn't it? Love others, love future generations, and death ceases to be as much of a tragedy. And by the time they cease to exist for the above reasons, we won't be around to be bothered.
@@Molybdaenmornell it's the way of everything that exists, whether it's every dog to every start or Sun. Death is beautiful in its own ways and we need to live our life in a way that nobody on earth is living a life not worth living. I used to think like you as well, but thinking more about it you start understanding, and the constellation of life starts forming, the beauty of life would never exist without the harsh truth of death. After all, we are just a small dot in all of existence and we will never know if more life lurks around there, life is beautiful because it is limited weather god exists or not (probably not).
@@adivwastaken I think our views are actually compatible!

I'd say this is the perfect time to be alive on Earth. Too far back there's so much war, genocides, disease and primitive technology. Too far forward and there's probably a brainwashed dystopian society, no people of their natural gender, and people with bad taste in music & unappreciative of the legends we love today
This is absolutely the most perfect time to take up the opportunity to change society, so we could progress even further to a better tomorrow. Don't be afraid that you want change. Change is needed, anyways. We won't get anywhere unless the majority of everyone gets along. Besides, you can be the next person to push us an inch closer towards planetary and galactic travel. All it takes is one step.
Whippybox_grHD! Lmao "bad taste in music". Do you think music is getting worse as time goes on? Because if that's the case, you're just lazy and not looking hard enough. As more people exist on Earth, more kinds of music from more sources will give way to much more variety and, inherently, more good music. Anyone who thinks that the popular Top 40 that people get the most shared exposure to is representative of the overall quality of all music being produced at that time is a fucking nostalgia-plagued dumbass.

It's just a theory. On a happier note as what he's said is that this potential theory will happen long after humanity is gone and that since it's just a theory, there is still potential for another big bang. Sextillions of years after the big cooling or the big crunch
Like my love life 😂
Well here is another theory; all these things was happened just before the last big bang? if Einstein right and if matter and energy are the same things just in different forms then everything is possible, even if energy gone there will be matter always and matter is energy, energy is matter and when there is matter, the universe won't go no where, it will just become into one, like before maybe?

@@MrFrezeeTr I don't believe in big bang I believe in God
I love that established theories tend to break down every 50-200 years or so due to new science coming to light. Especially now with our technology increasing so rapidly. I'm no scientist and don't understand the mathematics of it all, but the "end" of our universe could be vastly different than is portrayed here. It makes sense everything would eventually burn through its energy and go dark, like the aging and death of cells in our bodies. We create different forms of mathematics to explain the "exceptions" to various universal laws. I'm unsure if there are any true exceptions. Seems more to me more likely that we have just yet to truly understand it all. I don't think I ever would want to understand it all. I love the mystery! Have a blessed existence, everyone!

Ummmmm they explode like 1 million years later
For some reason I feel sorry for the black dwarfs because they are all alone :(
Imagine them as ancient cold dark gods of iron and death, reaping their final rewards at the end of time after having vanquished the overpowering light.
(or like imagine them as thoughtless balls of iron)
hmm.... still feel sorry for them :)
Don't worry they have each other!
Pink Animate that makes me feel better :)

Please do a video about how a civilization could survive beyond that point. I´ve read that it is theoretically possible for an advanced civ to harvest the energy from the spin of a black hole, and its hawking radiation. This is my first youtube comment ever and I´m happy to use it to give you guys a video idea and to tell you how much I appreciate your work.
Guilherme Bier They actually did! I can't remember the title of the video, vut it has something to do with the death of the universe.
Welcome to to RUclips! :-)
surviving gamer Don't they all?
The problem with hawking radiation as an energy source is that only very small black holes emit it fast enough to be useful, and the smaller they are the faster they decay, so it's not a great long term solution. But it'd still make a great video.
Guilherme Bier reminds me of the Twili in the Legend of Zelda who have adapted to live in a cold lifeless dimension by harnessing strange energy.
i like that after every segment that can induce existential crisis you include a segment that reiterates how far away in the future it will be, and that humanity has plenty of time to enjoy itself
This video made me depressed and then snapped me back to reality at the end. Good job on making this very informative video :D
its a good day when Kurzgesagt uploads.
Indeed.

got to use this for a science project, thank you for this info and inspiration my good sir
Yet again, Kurzgesagt has not failed to give me those depressing thoughts and fears of the universe ending.
The Whale don't be scared, you'll be dead before that even happens
I'm drinking bleach today following up with drano I'm totally aware. It's a fear that won't go away.
You'll get over it, don't worry.
Yves Heinrich LOL
The Whale You should not worry about the universe ending, all humans and life should be dead in 100-200 years so it does not matter as we will already be dead and our legacy destroyed.
That iron sphere needs a hug ;_;

MCDecay it is cold mate
It is powered by Quantum tunnels which is super cool buy gives off soem energy
Well.... It needs hug doesn't mean you can give hug...
Is it "Ion" or "Iron"? Those are two very different things
Just checked the subtitles, it's "Ion".
This idea gives me the chills
I remember watching this video when I was 7 and I have so much nostalgia

for some reason the idea that everything will eventually die gives me comfort. great video!
Why is your voice so calming
the heat death is one of the most depressing concepts in existence
Nah heat dave is way more depressing
at least with the big crunch it's implied that the universe starts over again, and the big rip has an actual end instead of the universe just being on life support for the rest of eternity
hmmmmmmm. i suppose yeah, the big crunch is sort of tragic, what with everyone dying and all that. personally i think it'd be cool as hell, total chaos at the end of the universe. that's just me though
Heat death...hell naw to the naw naw naw naw to naw to the naw to naw naw naw
It's not you will go back into unconsciousness and not know it. It's sort of peaceful.

Gravity would inevitably draw everything together, and (hypothetically) the friction and force would tear it all apart again and the universe restarts colorful and warm.
