When I was a little boy and I learned about solar power I often would think about how pointless it was to have solar collectors on the ground when we could just have them in space! Even better if we could have them around the sun itself! I never had a word for describing this until I was in high school when I came across the idea of Dyson spheres I got disappointed it wasn’t an original idea but also super happy someone else thought of it too and became super curious about far-future technologies ever since! Dyson spheres are my favorite!
I mean, I think it would still be an original idea, because you came up with it on your own. Sure, somebody came up with it before you, but you weren’t copying them, you just happened to have the same idea.
I came from the future just to let you know you are completely right. But they were out voted and it is very similar to this. But that really old show Star Trek is a very good representation of what we do in the 24th century.
Played it through already! Was big fun and still is. But my Dyson Swarm was a bit short-lived and the solar sails vanished after approx. 30 Minutes. So I used them to create a sphere. Thank god, I have the resources of not only a planet but a whole galaxy to exploit. But the Dark Fog seems pretty interested in my doing as well... Nasty little buggers.
Amen brother, keeping the swarm off my resource outposts gets annoying. I am currently constructing a HUGE Dyson sphere around a type O star (blue super giant) I got the frame in place but making and launching the millions and millions of mirrors are going to take forever.
@@sahinyasar9119 1. earth gravity is stronger than mercury 2. The atmosphere is also thicker 3. @@secretunknown2782 Because solar panels are very short-lived compared to the timespan it will take us to harnes all the energy needed for interstellar space travel. Solar panels are not as efficient as we think :) They're still heaps better than fossil fuels at not destroying our planet, but it's still not good enough for very, very big energy generation. I've got my sights set on nuclear fusion, but that needs to be properly funded and isn't really at the moment.
@@ExEBoss Nope. Mercury is many orders of magnitude more massive than all the astroids in the solar system. There isn't enough astroids to make a full Dyson swarm, and they're too far away regardless. Mercury really is the best solution.
I refuse to believe this majestic video, which I saw when released, is 5 years old. I miss 2019 so much, and I wish that this world was as good as Kurzgesagt had said we should have tried to make.
What technological limitations can you think of that prevents us from creating some type of partial Dyson swarm from mining with robots mercury and launching satellites/collectors to beam down energy and accelerate the process?
@@sw1tch327 The abysmal efficiency, recyclability, and maintenance of solar panels and the difficulties we would also have with capacity when it comes to storing that power. On the one side. We might not need huge capacity if we can solve the problems with Solar energy. Solar Panels lose efficiency as they heat up and their efficiency is rather shit to begin with. But if we could develop solar technology that would allow us to control how much energy we take-in, whenever we need it. Then we wouldn't need to have an incredibly advanced energy infrastructure. That said. Without that advancement. We need a good way to direct as much solar energy into the energy grid for storage for when it's needed. Batteries are essentially already at their best efficiency that we can actually get them. There's pretty much a chemical limit. So we can't just make a super-grid of batteries. They're expensive, volatile, inefficient for our purpose etc. Super capacitors have the problem of having even less efficiency than batteries but they can output charge much faster. Not really fit for purpose. Perhaps we'd find ways to use any excess energy that we harvest when it's not needed and pump it into a mechanical system that would allow us to convert later on. I'm spitballing here but yeah. There's a boatload of issues with just receiving the energy. Let alone setting up the infrastructure that builds the thing.
@@Unethical.FandubsGames Well if you watched the video it covered that when it said to use mirrors. With that much power we can use kugleblitz batteries (maybe). And we can just not store whatever energy we don't need and use what we can and then we have a very high demand for energy storage
Honestly, most people would rather focus on space travel than current problems because it's easier and more interesting. There's a reason there are hundreds of sci-fi shows but none about feeding the homeless.
@@sw1tch327 sorry to necro here, but my concert is he said mirrors to direct to a place. If that place is on earth then we are going to fry the earth before the end. Even if we dont, if the mirrors have a glitch that much energy focused in one place could demolish any city (magnifying glass and ant). So we focus on an object in orbit, how do we get that energy here? We don't have a way to efficiently transmit energy across space. Right now the only way they can think of is lasers, and again with that much energy a bad actor could demolish a city. There is also a massive amount of energy lost to the atmosphere and then again with solar. The mirrors have to be able to direct in unison to a point. How are we going to do that? Not to mention it has to get into orbit, but the mirrors will act as solar sails. If we use the force of those to keep it in orbit then we run into the issue of sun spots. Then how do we rotate the mirrors to remain focused on earth? Can't be gas we would run out on the mirrors before long. Maybe some gyroscope, but we would have to have billions of satellites working in unison

Congratulations! The editing skill of your team chnged from level "Master" to level "Godlike". No seriously. The animations were already perfect and beautiful. But this now is a whole new dimension. I thought long ago that it can't get better but yet, I am proven wrong. Also, I really like the idea of video game mechanics to show off such topics. But it would be really nice if there would be an Bluray with the Kurzgesagt videos in English and German :D
Yep, before it was like in fortnite season 6 and now it’s like season 20 of the animations. Sooo good. It’s making me happy in every moment the view changes
Kurzgesagt: This is how to build a Dyson Sphere Scientists: Alright we're ready. Kurzgesagt: You need to dissasemble an entire planet. Scientists: *u wot*
Over the course of millions of earth years thats possible. The physics goes like this basically "you enter wormhole to a location 1 light year away. It takes 1 minute for you to be there but the rest of the universe around you lives through that 1 year." Now add that up for locations 10 million light years away and you should be able to see the problem here
I mean how many of us would actually be bothered if the planet was completely mined to the core to the point where it's unrecognizable? I mean obviously if it had life it would be a different story, but if the planet itself is dead then it truly is a small price to pay.

@@EmbracingAwkward There was actually another game called Stellaris that has some megastructure mods which I think it’s more directly inspired by. However, for what isn’t from Civ or Stellaris, a lot of the UI appears to take design ideas from this video in addition to more focus on a Dyson Swarm for a while over just the rigid sphere that I think is the endgame. It’s also really incredible that the game also takes the Dyson Sphere’s Kardeshev Type II civilisation of harvesting energy from the entire star system and brings it into Type III on the galactic scale. Dyson Sphere Program is just a fantastic game :D
One big step would be abandoning our bodies and virtually uploading our minds/conscience into new personal vessels which could hypothetically grant us near immortality, and could do other things like link all minds to a central network which would allow us to grab any piece of information we would ever need, without ever having to "memorize" it. The potential is almost limitless.
@@kennethmclean2408 To expand the likelyhood of annihilation we would be expanding our technology and expanding the populations to different planets, galaxies, etc. making 100% likelyhood near impossible, but if something happened at a large enough scale it could be plausible.

About time someone mentions factorio. Factorio has huge potential as long as the devs add stuff. Like expanding from the rocket launch at the end and going on from there.

Why we don’t put solar panels on mercury instead of destroying mercury to build dyson sphere
How to build a Dyson swarm.
First, you're gonna need a planet you don't want...
Or a whole bunch of asteroids.
We just want earth, and probably mars
@@ExEBoss Nope. Mercury is many orders of magnitude more massive than all the astroids in the solar system. There isn't enough astroids to make a full Dyson swarm, and they're too far away regardless. Mercury really is the best solution.

I refuse to believe this majestic video, which I saw when released, is 5 years old. I miss 2019 so much, and I wish that this world was as good as Kurzgesagt had said we should have tried to make.
i can imagine building the dyson sphere would be much easier than resolving conflicts we have right now.
