Cosplay Wig Spiking | The Basics

- Hey everyone! I'm here with a small and VERY basic wig spiking tutorial. This was partially a video I made to use as a demo during Sunset Rogue and I's wig styling panel that we've run a couple times now. Since I thought other people might find a break down of how I personally make spikes in wigs useful, I thought I would do a little voice over explanation and post it here for you guys to use as well!
I remember when I first got into cosplay there weren't many tutorials out there specifically on HOW to make spikes in wigs, just a lot of time lapse videos of people magically cutting things and they looked perfect, so I've been thinking about making a few wig styling videos breaking things down so they are a little more clear for people like me who need that kind of instruction haha.
Anyways, I hope you find this helpful! Let me know if there are any other kind of tutorials you'd like to see and I'll do my best to demo them for you guys (given I have the supplies on hand haha)

As someone who absolutely sucks at doing hair and gets frustrated and quits halfway through, I am quite pleased to say that your tutorial helped me out immensely! I was able to style my wig that I previously hated and feel proud of it! Thank you so much for the awesome tutorial! You earned a subscriber! :)
sis you literally SAVED MY POOR WIG THANK YOU SO MUCH
Edit: forgot to tell, I'm doing L's wig for my brother's cosplay
This video SAVED me and my wig. It's short and to the point which I love and it's actually as simple as you describe it, so thank you SO much!
I LOVE YOU! I'm into starting cosplaying and this video saved me and my money

I’m cosplaying kokichi and this helped SO MUCH
This is probably the best straightforward wig styling tutorial I’ve seen! Good explanation! I can’t wait to use this tutorial!
im gonna cosplay tamaki amajiki soon and i started freaking out once i couldn’t figure out how to style it, thank you for this I really feel like it helped me a lot
I thought of the wrong Tamaki 😂
This was honestly so helpful and straight to the point. I'm currently trying to style a Dabi wig and I've been so confused on how to spike it well. I'm about to go buy a teasing brush and some glue now, thanks!
omggg i’m so happy i found this, i’m styling my ibuki wig and want to put spikes in places so it looks more like her, and this really helped! thank you! :D
This video was really helpful! I’m cosplaying Kiibo soon and this will help me style the wig!
How did your Kiibo cosplay turn out?
🙏 BLESS. You made this quick and easy and now I can FINALLY style one of my wigs I've had for a while.
I’m so happy I was able to find this!! I’m trying to cosplay Hajime Hinata, and i was having a LOT of trouble with his hair.
Literally same

THANKKK YOUUU!!
I'm cosplaying as kokichi oma and his spikes will literally NOT STAY IN PLACE 😭😭
Thanks so much!!♡
Omg I found another Danganronpa fan❤
Thank you for this. I used this for my Dabi wig(which was a wig from an old cosplay of mettaton from like 2016 that my parents got off of amazon for like $10) and I quite like how it turned out!!
Your video was extremely helpful. I just started cosplaying and one of my future cosplays, Tokuchi from One Outs, his hair is spiky and I have his cosplay ready except the wig and this helped me a lot.
I have syn wigs but I know how some characters i'lm doing their hair is spikey and I knew hairspray was bad for stn wigs until you mentioned oil. So as long as the hairspray don't contain oil, youre set since syn wigs dont asorb pil like human hair does.
this video is aweosme! hopefully will save my All might cosplay!
AAAAAA THANK YOU! This really made spiking more simple for me! I want to cosplay kagamine Len and spiking would be perfect for him, so thx for making this video ✨

Wow! Thank you for making this video! I always wondered how to do it. Question: do the spikes stay permanently? If not, how do I make it stay permanently? And what type of hair spray do you use? Thank you!
This just saved my life! I’ve never done spikes before and I’m about to style a wig for my Bakugou cosplay
Thank you so much!! I’m going to be cosplaying Giyuu from demon slayer and Kaminari from BNHA. This video just made styling the wigs so much easier!
My dabi wig was literally terrifying before- thank you so much 👀
I ruined my Killua wig and this helped out and I’m hoping it comes out good! 😊
My Kokichi wig came unstyled, so I needed to style it and had no idea how lol. Thank you!!
Cool video!
I certainly have no problem getting my own hair this way without a wig *.* Hair thatt at defies gravity!
But then I got cancer and then chemo :' o
Can't wait to grow it back but these wigs are fun!
Dude, I’ve never been saved by a video more in my life. I’ve given up on a lot of cosplays because I couldn’t get the wig spiked and it didn’t look right. My next cosplay is Megumi Fushiguro from JJK, which has a lot of spikes so I’m hoping that the tips from this video help!
Short and simple, so helpful for figuring up how to fix my Hinata wig 😭
Thank goodness I saw this video I'm trying to do a Dabi cosplay
this helped me so much, thank you a lot! but I have a question: after I'm done with my cosplay and I have to take off the wig, shall I put it on the head stand like this without doing anything?
your tutorial saved me! i’m doing a mercy cosplay and her bangs are very poofy and spiky and so is her ponytail so this is helpful
This was SO helpful!! I've never styled a wig before, but recently bought one to use for a Killua cosplay. I don't own mannequin head though. Is it possible to style a wig really nice but not have one? Or do you have any tips? Thanks again, this was very helpful :D
I’m planning on cosplaying a genderbent ibuki with spikes and this is gonna b very helpful! :D
Alastor wig, here I come!
A year ago i found this vid and i thought teasing is stupid cuz it broke the wig, but now not really 😂 teasing is essential in wig styling and ive learn a lot too 😂
Thank u, i'm cosplaying joseph next month lol

Thanks!
You are amazing *__*
I'm going to use this with my Hearthstone (magnus chase) cosplay!
thank you so much oh my god
A couple easy questions
1- Will normal hairspray work
2- Can I do this on large areas?
I’m doing a peridot cosplay but also making her hair a little more natural, instead of triangular
OH MY LORD I LOVE YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH WHDBAJ
This video literally saved my life T H A N K Y O U
I have absolutely zero knowledge about wigs and I want to cosplay Dabi
So thank you a lot 😅
if i style a wig have a certain shape what would you recommend i use make the shape permanent? i was thinking about using watered down mod podge or pva glue
Plan to do this for an unpleasant (regretevator) cosplay. It's probably gonna be hard because I'm gonna do long hair for the cosplay :')
I SHOULDVE WATCHED THIS BEFORE I STYLED MY NAGITO WIG-
RIGHT NOW ITS LITERALLY A TEASED MESS I HAVE TO ORDER ANOTHER ONE😭
Oof I think it's too late now but you can just wash it with shampoo if you wanna restyle your wig again, search for wig care tips on youtube
Thx god bless everyone
is there a other product to use instead of hairspray? i only have wig conditioner and that's coming tomorrow so i down have anything to use
came here to see what i could do for my technoblade cosplay.
thought are that his hair doesn't really have like any clear ref you could use bc his minecraft skin is a litteral pig-
so i could make the bangs using this, and quite possibly the pig ears to!
i'm a little stuck on if i should make the back of his hair messy, curly, straight, or in a braid but imma work it out :>.
if i do this and then want to use my wig for something else is this washable? will the stuff und?
Thanks, I'm about to go to a convention and I had no idea how to do this. 😅
saving for uta asahina cos
I’m cosplaying nagito and I’m about ready to give up styling it so let’s see how this will help I’ll comment again on if it worked
I’m cosplaying for the first time as killuah, this helped a lot if anyone has any other tips I would love them
THANk YOU QUEEn OMG I’m making a cats the musical wig and this helps so much with the ears idk lol
This may be e years later but thank u this will help me with my dabi cosplay
This is really helpful! Do you know if it’s possible to style the wig while it’s on your head? Or is there any easy alternative to a mannequin head?
It COULD be possible, but it's more tedious without a stand since you're going to be cutting and styling it. Stands are used just to have a better view of what the wig should look like as opposed to if you just wear it--especially if you want to wear it several times to see if you styled enough during the process
So I got a Spirit Halloween wig and it says for me to not use a heating hairdryer, just a cool one. Does using a cool hair dryer leave the spike in place like using heated hairdryer?
Any kind of extra air will help dry the hairspray faster so yes! The only difference is that when working with heat resistant wigs, the heat makes the plastic slightly more malleable which is why I like to use it on low heat versus no heat. But definitely don't use heat if it says not to! It will melt for sure haha
Wowowo
Do you by any chance know how to make a wig lighter. I have a wig i wanted to use a wig for bulma from dbz but it is darker than what i need. Any ideas on how i can fix this
Unfortunately, I've never personally made a wig lighter, but I do know that generally speaking, you can't "technically" lighten the fibers of a wig. That being said you can apply things to the surface of your wig to potentially make them appear lighter (but it will affect the texture of the wig, so be warned).
I do know that you can't do it with ink based dying or Fabric dye. I'm not 100% sure if a paint/water mixture would work to lighten a wig, but I do know that the more paint vs water you use to make it more pigmented, the more crusty/stiff the wig gets (but you can generally still brush through it in most cases)
The only thing I've seen people use that is probably the best bet would be paint markers. However from what I can see they will also affect the texture of the hairs on the wig, but since I've never used them myself I don't know how well they actually work. I personally recommend watching this video that FaxenCosplay made where they used the paint markers ruclips.net/video/71pRICPPPw4/видео.html
I hope any of that info helps! I'm sorry I don't have a good solution on this, but if I find one after all I'll let you know!
Are you able to do this with yarn wigs (like the fluffy kind) and does the type of hair spray matter?
I've never actually tried this on a yarn wig, so I'm really not sure. As far as hairspray, you just want to make sure it doesn't have added oils in it (since some do, and synthetic fibers can't absorb it and will just become greasy) I prefer the got2b glued freeze spray since it's got really good hold but I know other people use different types ^^
Dang it, I bought hair gel. Also I was gonna spike my own hair for a cosplay but my hair was a few inches too long so I cut it and... now I have to tell people it was gum
jdbfkdf THANK YOU!!! Im doing Dabi for Halloween so this is a lifesaver. (also, why are anime characters so spiky with their hair?😂)
Will any type of hair spray work? Also this video is a lifesaver 👀
I'm not 100% sure what types of hairsprays will or won't work. I've heard to stay away from ones that have oils in them because the wig can't absorb it and it can make your wig look greasy. The only two I've heard good things about are Aqua Net and got2b. I personally use got2b glued freeze spray and it works amazing so that's what I recommend, but if whatever hairspray you have works, then I say go for it!
