    I owned a Porsche 944 S2 for three years. When I sold it (perhaps my biggest regret) I got 50% more than I paid for it. So owning that car and driving/maintaining it for three years actually made me money.

    I’ve owned several classic cars. Buy what you like, drive & enjoy them. If you break even or make money when you sell, you’ve done well for yourself. You can’t compare cars to other investments. You have to take into account all of the related coats. Insurance, storage, & a LOT of maintenance to keep a car running well that’s not driven very often & not reliable like new cars.

      Exactly right, They are all way overpriced, The moron`s buying these at insane prices are deluded, For the sake of one part you just as well scrap the car, Very few people at all brought these cars, Most of whom are probably dead by now or don`t drive, So there is no connection to them, The UK Government has always led a terrorist campaign against the British motorist, Especially the poorer motorist, Sot he sooner they ban petrol and diesel engines and shut the filling stations the better

Standard GS ser II styling but with lightly tweaked & lowered suspension, spoilers, mesh grill & gorgeous 18" Oz wheels. Sport 430's were sold by Lexus from late 2003 to early 2005, only about 18 months. Unsuprisingly, they're a very rare sight on British roads today.

    Great channel and topic! One factor in future classics is also keeping it running in good shape. Appreciation needs to be able to outpace the cost of ownership. For instance, a Ferrari F355 especially in a 6 speed is almost a guarantee for appreciation. But if you’ve had one and kept it regularly serviced, it’s highly unlikely you will profit in total given frequently brutal maintenance and repair.

      @@BrownCarGuy I think that GM used John DeLorean's idea of wedge shaped vehicles, even after JZD's departure in the 70s. Agree most of that. Had to be desirable or game changer when new. Eg first Audi TT. Jag XK8 wasn’t coveted on release but makes you feel special. And the e46 M3 was coveted! In the future, people will likely have a ICE as a toy so look for sports/ convertible/ do everything (SUV), and were talk of the town when released.

    I came upon this video accidentally and I'm sure glad I did. Very interesting and insightful. A car you touched on briefly that I think is still a great value is the Porsche 928.
    The 928 was the first Porsche with a V8 and was supposed to become the flagship. When it debuted in 1978 it sold for close to a 50% premium over a 911.
    The early cars, from 1978 until mid-80s were ahead of their time and the styling was unique. By the end of the run in 1995 they were extremely competent GT super cars.
    There seem to be two distinct price points with the later model 90s cars demanding high prices however all models are still pretty reasonable compared to air cooled 911s.
    I think the pear bodies are finally being recognized as the fun, reliable cars they were and I think they will continue to climb in vale. Thanks for listening to my opinion. I look forward to your future videos.

      The main problem with the 944 and 928 is the split drive system, very complex and very expensive to fix/replace. Creates great balance but it soured me, my friends mom had a 928 that never really left the garage, had like 45k on it, she was going to sell it to me cheap but also I'm too tall at 6' to really sit in it. 911 is a dream for tall people.

    I only buy classics I genuinely like. If I end up not making money on the Car, I still have a car I love. Also I ensure that the classic car has no rust. It it doesn’t have rust I don’t even care if it is running or not. I’m considering importing an ae86. Since compared to $60,000 Supra’s they are still fair in price. The most I would spend on one of those (ae86) would probably be 35k for a stock low millage example. (Low millage for Toyota is 100,000 miles

    All hard assets are appreciating as a result of low interest rates (free money). And with fiat currencies being diluted, money is searching out quality assets. Classic cars would not be my first choice due to overhead costs. Should interest rates rise (and they will), the crash will be epic.

      Great comment! On the 928 it’s often described as a ‘passive’ rear wheel steering system, but it’s a very slight adjustment to pull the tyres in under braking and cornering. The Prelude was the first to have Active rear wheel steering and the first to do it mechanically in a production car. Thanks!!

I also have a 2000 BMW Z3 that I always though was my collectible, did the dual mass to std clutch to it and custom exhaust, new top and it lives in the garage now in winter.

I have a spot on the hood that the clear is peeling so need to redo the hood. A lot of Rovers here are pretty beat, trying to find a used bush bar for mine, lots of small fixes, it is a British car and Lucas works but it reminds me of my 1982 MBZ 200SD, lots of room to work on the engine and even the switches could be disassembled and repaired, wish I still had it, 27mpg diesel.

    Enjoyed this video, would be great to see more insight on classic cars! However, watching this , I couldn’t help not think about the social aspect concerning the future values of classic cars. Cars that can be sniffed upon on some parts of the world could be a target of heated hunt elsewhere, and that variation in local demand will vary greatly the local prices. Probably hence the different future investments lists (by region) by Hagerty. Probably at some point there will need to be a similar list for the Middle East region, and bet that will be different still - probably more US inclined (but that’s a topic for another time maybe!). Anyhow, this video probably tells me what I already intended to do (inshalla): keep my X351 XJ 5.0 SC, which is the last ICE-ed XJ, for as long as I can...

    • @BrownCarGuy
      @BrownCarGuy  3 года назад

      Great points, and yeah keep the Jag. I think Middle East classic list would be US and Japanese orientated, but it will take a little longer for classics to truly find their values in that market. That could well be a subject for another video 😉

    Good content. I'm expecting classics will plunge in the short/medium term though.. It depends how bad the covid aftermath is... Classics will preceed houses in a crash I think. You also don't mention how classic car values could hold after 2040-50 due to electric conversions. They'll be much cheaper as they become more widely done and the battery technology should hopefully improve making finding space for them less of an issue.
    For the time being I have:
    1993 300zx N/A
    1991 Alfa 75 Veloce 3.0l V6

    • @BrownCarGuy
      @BrownCarGuy  3 года назад

      Great feedback and car choices - thanks! Classic and used values seem to be holding up well at the moment - they didn’t rise too much so I’d expect them to hold steady for now. Only a fraction of classics will be converted to electric. I think that classic cars will have exemption from emissions regulations 2040 onwards as there are too few and driven too rarely to make a difference to the environment. I predict the rarity at that point of traditional combustion engines will ensure their continued collectibility and value, even if regular road use might go down significantly. Having said that - who can really predict the future?! LOL.

    • @olivernew4641
      @olivernew4641 3 года назад +1

      @@BrownCarGuy yes you might be right about exemptions. I think it will depend on how fanatical it all gets. I imagine it becoming quite totalitarian in terms of emmisions etc when the current younger generations are running the show... Only time will tell. I really hope you're right. I think conversions will be quite widespread if the limitations are very strict. But I think that could help values of both converted and unconverted cars.. We need a crystal ball 😊

    • @steveanacorteswa3979
      @steveanacorteswa3979 2 года назад

      IT's more a pie in the sky, batteries won't get better, they already catch fire, you can't shrink the type of energy you need to pull from your fuel source without generating too much heat, gas blows in your engine instead of your battery, it's just an unsolveable physics problem, you make current, you get heat, you get heat you get resistance and that needs more current, we call it thermal run away in electronics.
      They need a removable battery that is standard, pull into a station (like oil changes) and guys swap the battery under your car and 10 mins you are on your way, you can't travel and stop and charge for hours every 100 miles.
