This is awesome. I used to do colouring in for hours as a child. I also did painting by numbers. Never thought I could make a living out of keeping inside the lines, but I went on to work for a small animation studio, where, at peak times I would be hired by my husband to help him with the hand painting of all the little shapes, rather like this lion. And now I can use these techniques to come to the subject from a different angle. I have got so many ideas just from watching your videos, thank.

Thank you for the tutorial. I found that Midjourney blending works so nice for a similar, faster, less manual approach. I spent a total of 2 minutes in my photo editor, for cropping and quickly erasing parts of images needed for blending.
Thank you very much Paul, for sharing such a wonderful technique!! It's mooore better for me, than drawing images from scratch, because I am not a good painter😁
me too I'm horrible at drawing, so i use other pictures parts as sketch then make my own original drawing, for example if i want to draw a *cat* i grab his body from image 1, and eyes from image2, then a tail from another image and collect them then eventually add some details. that's because i have no skills in drawing, but I'm trying to learn 😅

Well its a bit of a flaff using a pen tool if you are beginner using a mouse on a lots of details , however for a complete none techy way you could use old school . 1 print the picture fairly large size low quality on a piece of paper 2 get a 2b pencil gently rub pencil on its edge on the reverse of the paper so it covers the image area on the side 3 get a clean piece of paper a clip board put the clean piece under print image 4 carefully sketch around the outlines of the edges you want to transfer onto the paper using a bit of pressure with the pencil or pen 5 go over the transfered outline image with a black pen use a rubber to remove unwanted smugdes, get your outlined image scan that into your computer 6 retouch the image removing any grey bits in basic photo editor 7 put into your favourite background remover 8 oulined image good to go for colouring book 9 for colour make a copy image and use a paint editor to fill in desired colours Or print the outlined image then colour in by hand and scan the image back computer Also a bit of a flaff but more do- able for the less techy then fiddling trying to draw with mouse .

Great video! Stylar AI might interest you - it's designed for logo, 3D, and interior design. Plus, it now supports adding text to images, along with image upload and auto prompts. Still developing, but could enhance your projects.
I wonder if I am missing something? I noticed that when outlining, you let your shapes overlap, and at the end there were no overlapping lines, but when I made outlines and made my outlines overlap, at the end I had tons of overlapping lines and it didn't look like a coloring page at all.
When downloading from Canva...we choose PDF Print but should we flatten it and choose CMYK? Or leave it all unchecked and keep as RGB? We have had some issues downloading 120 page books when we chose CMYK (which we thought it should be for KDP). Thank you. Great video.
I leave all mine as RGB. And yes, it's probbaly better to flatten your pdf. I think it makes the file size smaller which helps if your cover has a number of layers.
Something I started doing is using an AI Art tool to create original designs. You can even write a theme for your book or art and just keep generating new images with that theme.
it is an amazing tecnique but I would like to make 90 degrees corners too and I can't find it with this tool it is possible? Thanks a lot for share your knologment!
You can create a horizontal line by holding down shift and using the pen tool and then do a vertical line at 90 degrees to it by again holding down shift. That's the only way I know of getting a 90 degree corner.
Wondering how long it took to complete this image? It seems a very labour intensive way of making a line image from a photograph, I'm sure I've seen other ways of doing it that are much simpler but perhaps not in Affinity?
It's going to take at least an hour per image, maybe longer. I use a similar method. And unfortunately, there aren't other ways to convert photos to coloring pages. Believe me, I've searched far and wide. Graphite on Mac and iOS is the closest you can get, but it's not perfect. The least labor intensive method is to buy coloring pages from a Fiverr artist or a vector stock site. Otherwise, there aren't any programs that automate this process...yet
@@paulmarles Good marketing idea. You also can do this in Adobe illustrator using image trace. It's automated. One can use sliders to get the look they want and also the number of colours.

HOLY SMOKES! 120 page coloring book?? So, you"re suggesting replicating this lion technique 120 times? By the time we got done with the last image, we'll all have flying cars!
Normally you'd leave the page on the reverse side blank. So, if it was 120 pages that would be 60 images. Most coloring books are less than 120 pages.
Well its a bit of a flaff using a pen tool if you are beginner using a mouse on a lots of details , however for a complete none techy way you could use old school .
1 print the picture fairly large size low quality on a piece of paper
2 get a 2b pencil gently rub pencil on its edge on the reverse of the paper so it covers the image area on the side
3 get a clean piece of paper a clip board put the clean piece under print image
4 carefully sketch around the outlines of the edges you want to transfer onto the paper using a bit of pressure with the pencil or pen
5 go over the transfered outline image with a black pen use a rubber to remove unwanted smugdes, get your outlined image scan that into your computer
6 retouch the image removing any grey bits in basic photo editor
7 put into your favourite background remover
8 oulined image good to go for colouring book
9 for colour make a copy image and use a paint editor to fill in desired colours
Or print the outlined image then colour in by hand and scan the image back computer
Also a bit of a flaff but more do- able for the less techy then fiddling trying to draw with mouse .
