    Some suggestions that Repper should be able to do in subsequent versions: Mandala, Zentangle patterns. How about tribal patterns. I mean that we should be able to choose the 'type' of pattern we want to create. Then Repper should have a selection of starting patterns for each type. Patterns inside shapes instead of always a 4-sided shape. A colouring page in a triangle or hexagon would be cool!

    • @repper
      @repper  Год назад +2

      Thanks for your suggestions! Mandalas are on our wish list too, there is just a lot on that list and we're a small team :) If you want to place patterns inside different shapes, I would for now recommend looking at bringing in some other graphics software. While we may add such functionality in the future, there is already a lot of tools out there right now that you can do that with.

    I have a question. Are you starting with Black and white source images? You never say quite how we get to the coloring page (the black and white image). Or said another way. If we have an image what do we click on to make it a black and white coloring page? Thank you in advance for answering this question.

    • @repper
      @repper  Год назад +1

      Yes, typically you want to start with an image that has the style/aesthetics of the pattern you are after. So if you start with a source image with black lines on a white background, you can create patterns that look like that, which are great for coloring in.

    How does it work? Does it vectorize that portion of the image and turns it into SVG? If the original photo is less than 300dpi the output will have a lower resolution? (changing the value means nothing if pixels are not there).

    • @velvetbees
      @velvetbees Год назад +1

      I also use 300 dpi for printing. If you start with 300 dpi, it will save at 300 dpi as long as you follow their suggestion on what the proper repeat number is when exporting. It will warn you upon export if you need to alter settings to avoid stretching the original image too much so that you lose your 300 dpi. I really encourage people who want to print or print on demand to start with 300 dpi or more. Never less than 300. But that is my own preferrence. I want it at least 300 for everything. Also, the export is jpeg or png at 300 dpi. I convert my png files into vectors like svg using Affinity Designer or Illustrator. Also, you export as one layer, if that helps. I have stacked individual png layers into one file in Photoshop and had interesting results.

    • @repper
      @repper  Год назад +1

      Hi Marina! Regarding DPI:
      You are right, the DPI value itself is just a value in the image's metadata that tells a printer or other software program the _preferred_ size to print it at, which can be overruled by either. Also, sometimes printing services require the DPI value to be set correctly. Another use for setting DPI in Repper's export is when you set a physical size (like, in inches), in which case the DPI will be used to automatically calculate the required export resolution for you. We have a series of blogposts about DPI, if you are interested in this (blog.repper.app/tag/dpi/).

    • @repper
      @repper  Год назад +1

      Regarding VECTORIZATION:
      Repper does not vectorize images: it's bitmap, in bitmap out; or vector in, vector out. Vectorization is complicated and often doesn't work as well as you'd hope (in my experience, at least :-). There are dedicated services out there if you'd like to see what's possible in this area, some free some paid.

    • @repper
      @repper  Год назад

      Hi Marina, regarding RESOLUTION:
      When working with bitmap, we recommend starting with the largest possible image size, so you have most flexibility in creating your patterns and maintain sufficient resolution. In the editor, you can always see the current tile size in pixels. When exporting as a Tile, simply use "maximum" to get the best possible resolution (same as in indicated in editor). When exporting as a Surface, we will warn you when we need to upscale your source image. You can then decide to reduce pixel size, increase repeats, or simply go ahead (for example, if the upscaling is minimal).

    I have the same question about upscaling. Is it necessary? If so, how do we do it? Also, how do we determine the correct surface area to design and export, for example, use in a 8x11.5 or an A4 size? Thanks!

    • @repper
      @repper  Год назад

      You are the only one who can determine at what size you need to export your pattern surface. It depends on what size you will want to print it (or intend the digital download to be printed at). Also if you have whitespace on the page around your pattern, like shown in this video, it would also change the size. This deals with printmaking and prepress and was beyond the scope of this video. I recommend you look up some videos that go more in depth on laying out colouring books 😊
      Regarding upscaling, I'm copying my response to the other comment here:
      Your source image will be transformed to a pattern surface, and the maximum size of the pattern surface (without the need for upscaling) will depend on the size of the part of the image you use as the sample for your tiling, the specific tiling (= pattern template) you choose, the amount of repeats of the pattern on the surface, as well as the final size (in pixels or psychical dimensions) of the surface. As you can see, there is a lot at play here! Luckily, Repper will warn you when your export would require use to upscale your image and will provide you with solutions to choose from. You can read more about it in this blog article dedicated to resolution and export in Repper: blog.repper.app/everything-you-want-to-know-about-image-resolution-in-repper/
