I used to work for NS for a while, and found a 1980's K5LA with snow cones on it. Asked the yard manager if he would sell it, as it was fouled. He sold it to me for $50. I took it home, cleaned it, bought a new diaphragm, and made it sound almost exactly like yours. I mounted it on my 2011 Dodge Ram (diesel) so I can give stupid drivers a heads-up =P
That 2011 K5LA sounds alright for a modern horn! Most of these modern K5LA's don't sound all that great. 1980's one is the best one though. Really LOVE the M5! 😊
Those Generation 1 and 2 K5LAs are always music to my ears. I never liked Generation 3s, but yours sounds very crisp. And that M5 sounds great! Thumbs up x5!
2011 K5LA is musically the best. The #4 bell dominates, the #5 is very strong as it should be, and the #3&4 slightly sharp so the horn sounds more like the old M5. This is the way we wanted the horn and the railroads all like it. The 1990's K5LA is muddy in comparison, flat #3&5 and too large a sequence between the #1&2. The 1980's K5LA would be great, but the #3 bell is too dominant. Bell dominance in the K5LA chord should be: 4-5-3-2-1. The M5 has a flat #5 bell, but all M5's sound different.
1st gens were just called K5las before the 2nd gens, the 2nd gens were introduced when Nathan produced K5las with somewhat out of tune 4a bells, the second gen horns sounded more minor than first gens, the third gen horns produced more of a round sound and was restricted, but the 3a bell would sometimes be playing at a much lower volume than the other bells or would play sharp, these horns would produce more of a major or a dominate sound.
Amatthew rail Productions I'm still trying to process the fact that the aem-7 engines are retired, and it's been almost a year! I honestly loved those toasters' horns!!

Jacob Tompke I didn't even know how much those things cost back then, but I'm glad I took that deal!
The Shotgun King yeah!!!!
+The Shotgun King ,,,you are fortunate ,,,,50 bucks for what's out there on ebay ,,,one K and higher....
Bro when I press read more it doesn't show more
Nothing like the sound of a Nathan M5. Beautiful.

the 80s and 90s K5LA gave me chills of F40PHs and AEM-7s
Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions or P42
that Second K5la is just beautiful!
Oh ya man! That 90s k5la gives me the chills of those older amtrak F40PHs! The 90s k5la goes for the win! Great sounding horn!
The 80's k5la is literally music to my ears. Sounds like it was off of an aem-7, or an f40.
love the M5!
That M5 is incredible
Some beautiful recordings there!! wow

That's so true. You gotta love the, 90's and 80's horns. Sounded beautiful.
2:04 best echo of the train horn queen the 2011 k5la
I have noticed that the newer K5LA's sound an awful lot like the old M5's -- may be a coincidence, or maybe the folks at Nathan got a clue (finally).
2nd gen K5LA is my favorite horn of all time
The 80's k5la sounds like the ones that are on the nj transit gp40 locomotives
All of the 2Bs except for 4201 & 4219 have Early 90's Tagless K5LAs.
Nice! Does anyone know how to disassemble an M powerchamber? I recently got one. It might be something super obvious
Great video. Nice horn variety as well. I enjoyed.
Awesome! Any idea on what notes the 3rd gen plays?
Late, but E#, F#, A, B, E#.
Actually D#

BCOL641, they're called snow cones. I think they're designed to filter materials that may get in the horn.
The 80s vintage K5LA is what I remember most, they sounded the best (for a K5 I guess). Everything now just makes noise.
Nothing beats an M5.
Correction, nothing beats an RS5T...
You mind if I use the 1980's K5LA section of the video for a TS2013 horn sound? They all sound amazing!
Whats with the sound of the horn from 1:14 to 1:30? It sounds like the pitch increases slightly each time you blow the horn. Sounds great though
Nice video! The older the horns, the better in my opinion! What causes some horns on locomotives to have a "squeal" at the end?
Here is a cool thing about the 2nd gen K5LA, if you step down the notes of each bell by 2 semitones, then you will get the tuning of the old cast p5
The 1980's model sounds the best to me.
I have a new K3La on my small truck, insane horn!
Whats does K3LA stand for? Is it mean something?
Always wondering.
3 gen < 2nd +1st gen
Order of the horns pls?
I like the 1980's K5LA the best.
80's K5 for the win
Pure magic beginning at 6:40.
the older ones sound best
Ya.
I wonder why the old cast ones are cool!
The first horn wins
2nd gen was really good, but the first gen is by far the best out of this group! The M5 is also pretty good.
K - Kettle drum type rear housing - 3 = 3 chime - L - low base - A - American tuning.
are the hornblaster guys using new K5LAs?
How can you tell by looking at them the difference between the first second and third generation K5la?
Christian Merritt Different bell Letters and numbers carved. Different sound.

Is the 2 bell on the RL K5LA a shallow bore?
Nice I like them
LOve the Gen 3 and 2
What are those things called in front of the 1980s horn bells?
via6444 snow cones
M: Majestic 5: 5 chime horn
6:50 is a 3rd Gen K5LA
No such thing as a "3rd Gen" K5LA.....
No, since the castings never really changed with the K-series.
Would it be safe to call the 1980's K5LA old cast, Or no?
Old/New cast only applies to P horns because the tuning changed between the castings. With M and K horns, the chords never changed over the years.
k-series, 3 chime, low manifold, American tuned
Doppler effect as he speeds up.
We're do u get those at
Henry Lewis ebay
2:44 sounds like marc
K= Nathan K series horn
3= 3 chime horn
L= Low Manifold
A= American tuned major triad horn
K3LA
That 2011 K5LA sounds nasty
How
Mr Zurkon I agree, I prefer gen 2 or 1. Mostly gen 2
2:15
80s sounded like a p42
That or an aem-7
Doesn't the 90s sound like a Genesis too especially because they were made in the 1990s! I am judging that from 3:00
Susquehanna Rail Productions the 1990s version K5LA sound more like a F40 then P40
The 2011 K5LA sounds terrible. Give me a first-gen K5LA any day.
Who dislikes the sound of America and Amtrak? :(
The K3LA and RS5T yell America to me more.
As far as bell sounds go, they are all loud and strong, (3rd Gen) but I can't stand them. Particulary the ones on CSX, they are just awful!
Sigh
Lmao
yeah too bad there retired
Amatthew rail Productions I'm still trying to process the fact that the aem-7 engines are retired, and it's been almost a year! I honestly loved those toasters' horns!!
The AEM-7s really were some of the best electrics
