@@dlane5292 Yes! Just guessing but about 95% of the CSX freight locomotives I hear and see have K5LLA horns. However, once in a while I'm pleasantly surprised when I hear one with an old school K5LA as it brings back fond memories from years gone by.
Amtrak's FL9s were also retrofitted with K5LAs after their original Hancock air whistles were removed, and some of the clips you can find of them in use is absolutely stunning.
Well, for one thing, today's K5LAs on Amtrak are almost always placed behind the exhaust stack, which causes the exhaust to distort and foul them. This is because engineers complained of the noise. Also, third-generation K5LAs are tuned to meet the FRAs increasingly-ridiculous regulations.
Milepost 282 Productions Interestingly enough, today's Nathan MicroProcision K5LAs aka 3rd gen K5LAs are actually tuned to play the original chords that the K5LA was originally designed to play from the getgo.
Sweetest sound horns! Ironically, because they were so loud and clear sounding, railroads with them have been gradually replacing them with the newer versions which are deliberately dischorded, including the K5LLa.
I read that the K5LLA came out in response to a regulation for a lower fuckin decibel rating for train horns. My guess is that they fuckin lowered the one fuckin bell to give the horn a bit lower pitch to compensate for a lower decibel.
Even though I was born in 98', I still get a real sense of nostalgia alone just from the the Doppler effect. Really makes me wish I was born earlier just to live in the 90s and see all these genuine Amtrak trains. Not to see all these charger units and k5hl bullshit
0:53 Well, hello again future Maine Eastern 488! That's the third time this week it's popped up unexpectedly for me in an Amtrak video! Go figure. Looks like it's being hauled off for maintenance again too... You know, I'm starting to get the impression 488 has a history of mechanical problems.
I love the first k5la doppler effect
Back when train horns were good.
I think I would have to agree with you The Gamer J J
Best K5LAs I've EVER heard!!! Thank you for sharing!!! Definitely better than today's horns for sure!
Still some on CSX/NS...

@@ACLTonyBro there is barely any K5LLA horns on CSX... Like 1 or 3 them
I Loved the one with the fog at 2:26, the fog makes the seen a whole lot better
Scene
Haha
In 1996 I lived in NJ, near the central station, man it was nice to step into the backyard and hear this kind of beauty. 😌
Wow that makes me jealous, I can picture that image

Those GP40s are some of my favorite Amtrak units :)
Collin Weis those GP40-TCs have been rebuilt as GP38H-3s
@Trainz4460 Ontario not just toronto
@ 2:48 that horn in the distance after it passed does something to me. One of the best horns ever made!
I ENJOY THIS VIDEO THANK YOU I ALSO REMEMBER THE RED DODGE RAM TRUCK WITH THE AMTRAK K5LA HORN ON IT
2:48
This was awesome

Beautiful, I love the first Gen K5LAs.
Wow I remember taking Amtrak from Florida to Philadelphia as a kid this brings back memories of those horns it's nice to hear them again 😊
Man, those do beat today's K5s....
Old Amtrak catches?
Nice.

BNSF1995 That's only for Full Covered Body Frame locomotives. Like the F40PH, the F59PHI, and it is the same with other F59PH's.

BNSF1995 The 3rd gen, or MP, or Raised Letter K5LAs are plenty loud in person. I believe the FRA failed at that measure. Thankfully
Thank you thank you thank you!! Great footage of F40s and GP40s as well as #doppler effect.
Wow, that was good, it brings back memories… I miss the F40-PH

Lovely K5LAs
The k5la is a very beautiful horn
Very upbeat and happy sounding.
I love the old amtrak horns these are some old videos
Those beautiful K5LAs are the best!
I wish those old engines were still in service like FP7A
I see you caught one of the GP40TC's, nice catch :D

That gp40tc in the first clip sounded good.
This is how k5las became famous 😊
great sounds!
I just recently watched the Amtrak youtube video on train horns. Was that you hosting it?
Is this in New York?
0:14 sound too good :) makes me tearrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr a bit :)
I like the one that emerges from the fog
That one clip where a GP40TC is pulling a FL9
@mdamttc199 Nice vid! Anymore footage of AEM-7 horns?
Joshua Jones Possibly in the future.
Is there anyway to make a k5 from today into one like this matt?
Fantastic
The AMTRAK FP7A , GP40 are scrapped or retired
Only 3 I know were scrapped in the 90s were 312, 262, and 255. I think.
The GP40TC in this video was rebuilt and serves today on Amtrak.
Your back
GRAND TONE!
OK BACK THEN CAMERA VOLUME USED TO BE VERY LOUD
I like the P5A’s on the F40PH rather than K5LA!
0:45 where is this
