I was able to get an Echo Show 8 and a fire 8 on sale. I hooked up the tablet to a separate speaker Bluetooth speaker. Both work great. The tablet is portable but you have to consistently wake up the tablet and speaker. The Echo show stays in one place but is always on and great for playing music it also pairs well with other devices including my tv and speaker.
I was on the fence on getting a show vs another fire tablet I'll be going with another fire. Plus if you trade in your old one you a $10 Amazon gift card and 25% off a new fire. I'm holding out until Prime Day which is in mid July to jump on a great deal.

Given an echo show 8 for a Christmas gift, and kids use it a lot. It has very good sound. Plus can make video calls to other echo shows. About the cord, I plugged it into a long thin indoor extension cord and we can move it around the living room, so it is tethered, but so is a charging laptop or phone and my experience is battery life is poor when watching video, so those devices are almost always used and plugged in at same time.. But agree totally wireless is nice. I can also drop in to the show from Alexa app on my phone and see and hear the room remotely, so I could be far away and see the room.
Definitely helpful. I am looking at getting them, also want to get the hi-fi speaker and sub eventually, so the fire seems perfect. It's funny because my wife works for apple, and their products are good, but Alexa is just so much better imo that Amazon home echo system just feels better and more cohesive.
