When you have big breakthroughs in mental health and become more balanced internally and express that outwardly it can seem different and down to the people around us because we aren't frantically faking happiness anymore. That contrast can be alarming to the ones who love us that we haven't wanted to worry with how unhealthy we were mentally/emotionally before. The past 2 years have been quite an adjustment in my life as I've been on a similar path as I recovered from a concussion and liver injury received in a car accident. My family is alternately amazed and concerned about the changes I continue to experience on my quest to be the best person I can possibly be.

brooklynne01 wow I absolutely love this explanation because it’s so perfect. I’ve come out recently and been honest about my depression and started taking meds just because it was getting to a place that was unmanageable. I personally have a pretty dark sense of humor sometimes bordering inappropriate 😅. So on good days and even bad days I would kind of share memes relating to mental health and what I was going through. Let me just say my friends and family have been appalled. They’re really concerned that I am in a really dark place (which isn’t a bad thing please do check on your loved ones with depression) when in reality I just know I have depression and I’m dealing with it, but I’m just being open with it. I like to make light of the matter to keep my spirits up. I always ask for help when I need it and I always have support when I need it, but I think the honesty I’m putting out shocks them because before they didn’t know anything was wrong.

I took a course at university on meditation. We focused on thanking our bodies and thanking for every good thing that has ever happened to us. I noticed my health improved. Kind of like my body was responding to my thoughts for it. I felt happy. very happy. I eventually want to add in yoga at the same time because that is meditation for the body. I would say your right where you should be. Maybe hook Martina onto meditating too. She almost already does this when she works on building her ladder. I've seen it said many times, mind over matter. You are making great progress. I don't know if you're depressed. You don't seem to be. I have clinical depression of the "don't wanna do anything" variety. Your strides in personal growth seem to fly in the face of that. Maybe you are just mellowing out as you mature. When my dad was sick with cancer, I decided to walk every day. It was the only thing I felt I could control at the time. I felt better for it. maybe this is what your feeling, the need for some kind of control. If you can keep yourself in a positive place. It will bring Martina up with you. it's like they say on the plain, "put your oxygen mask on first, then help". love you both sooooo much. Thank you for being human.

Dear Simon - I really appreciate how vulnerable you were in this video. You spoke so honestly and earnestly, and not once did you apologise for being 'too open' or anything of that sort, which I tend to see often in other videos where someone is expressing something heartfelt. You didn't detract from what you were saying by apologising or making jokes about it, you didn't shy away from your feelings, and I genuinely feel very touched that you were able to be so honest with your audience. I teared up towards the end of the video as you were discussing your fears about the possible 'dark side' of these changes, and I just wanted to send you a big hug. It seems like you're doing perfectly alright to me, but maintaining self-awareness and evaluating your situation is always important too.
You and Martina have both inspired me many times over, but this video went one step further and I am somehow deeply touched by all that you've said. Thank you for having the courage, the openness, the honesty, and the vulnerability to make this video. My day and even my life are better for having watched it. Keep up the good work, and please know that we are all cheering you on!

Mindfulness has really changed my life, and changed me. Sometimes when you become more present and authentic, it can be shocking to those around you. I was always a people-pleaser in the past, and when I started changing some family members said I wasn’t thinking about them enough. They were just used to me obsessing about their needs. Similarly, it’s easy to ignore anxiety by pretending to be upbeat and positive all the time. People seeing you change might think that you’ve become more sad, more serious. But as you are more true to yourself and see your thoughts and feelings for what they are, you will be better able to help and connect with them on the future. God bless!! I love you guys!

    • @recoil53
      @recoil53 5 лет назад +7

"Not thinking about them enough". Well if you weren't being a jerk and self centered/greedy but rather considering the impact of things on you or people other than that person, I'd say they have the real problems.
Mindfulness in a society where everybody is staring into their phones even mid-conversation makes you stand out. Really, it wasn't that long ago that having a constant need to be distracted/entertained was seen as childish and having attention deficit issues.

As someone who feels like they hold their partner back, I can say that Martina will probably feel this way no matter how you improve or don't improve yourself. It's just something we have to deal with in our own issues and insecurities, which really sucks because people like us will probably always feel like they're being left behind a little - even if you sit on the couch with us all day. I think what you're doing is incredibly healthy for you, both physically and mentally. Not many people get to have a chance to start fresh, and it seems like it's obviously working. Just let any concerned friends and family know that you're changing your lifestyle which means multiple changes, not just one or two - and that it makes you feel so much happier and healthier. I'm sure that once they know you haven't gone "crazy vegan", they'll be more supportive than worried lol.
Congratulations on the success, it's amazing, it's inspiring and you deserve all of it :)

But in some videos, it shows Martina feeling bad/thinking that she is a burden to Simon while he encourages her and tells her that she’s never a burden. I feel the same way with my boyfriend I’ve been with for almost five years. I feel like a burden due to my (sometimes) negative personality and struggles with self-hate. As an old school nasty, I don’t know exactly what I took from you guys in loving your partner, but what I did learn was that I just need to love and love genuinely because sometimes, that’s all you need 💕

Simon don't let anyone tell you that the changes youre making are "too much." You are bettering yourself intentionally and when someone does that...it makes the world and people around you so much brighter. You ARE doing the right thing. I attempt to do the same thing for myself every day as well. When I skip out on bettering myself, I skip out on making my world better. Much Love, my friend

I do taekwondo and we have classes where we do “forms meditation” where we just go through our forms over and over while our master directs us to keep our minds on the movement ect. And we end it by traditional meditation of siting and focusing on the feel of our heart and breath. I carry this into my daily life now and I feel like it’s changed me drastically as a person. I had dealt with the loss of a loved one and took it hard. I was just filled with anger 24/7 and wasn’t in a good space but meditation and exercise helped me get through become better.

Hey Simon I hope you read this because I might be able to answer your question
You say you do all of these things daily, which is great because you really seem to be happy with it!
BUT what happens if you don't? like let's say you skip an entire day of this routine of yours. Do you then feel guilty or like you failed? Do you get upset with yourself and mentally beat yourself up for not fulfilling this routine of yours?
Because if you say yes to that, then yes, then it might be unhealthy and you are trying to control what can be controlled when you might be feeling like other things are out of your control if that makes sense.
So just make sure that you're routine doesn't become a ritual.
Hope this can help as a perspective

    Good Morning Simon,
Saying that I know exactly how you feel seems a bit patronizing. Because everyone has their own approach and way of dealing with this kind of thing. My husband has multiple osteochondroma and has had 15 surgeries so far and 16 is probably going to be happening next year some time. I also have a 6 year old that also has it and last month was her first surgery. And for the last 7-8 years I have put everyone else first doing whatever I could to make his day easier and give my daughter a full day every day. The last three years though I found out that I had to do things for me as well. Not only was it becoming necessary for my health but we often forget that we also need to make ourselves a priority. I go to the gym but I get the most out of yoga and meditation. It's been a way to let the stress and pressure fall away. When I meditate I don't think about what I have to do that day. I let my worry and paranoia fall away and I just listen to my breathing and listen to my body. I know that sounds weird. But you need to find peace. And that helps you think more clearly too. I am in no way the best at yoga because I am still a delightfully pudgy person. I have on going thyroid issues so I'm never going to be a size 2. But after keeping that routine I feel better after. My leg and back are less sore during the day because of it as well. It was a dramatic shift when I started turning it around and doing it for myself and not just everyone else. I felt more accomplished and less panicked.
I have had family worry about me too. And I know it's because I take on so much and sometimes I do get overwhelmed. On camera I can't see that anything that you're doing is bad Simon. It's how you've processed and dealt with this. It is a difficult and multi leveled situation. And it's hard to talk about without a spouse feeling guilty about it. My husband always sees what I do is something I do because of him. He doesn't understand that it's for him because I love him. And I know had this been reversed and I had his disease that he would do the same for me. I know that doesn't make it easier for him, I wish he didn't have that guilt. I am a fixer, and when I can't fix something I get really frustrated. He's getting older, more is hurting and the more I am realizing what his every day is going to continue to be like. I've decided to go back to school for massage therapy. It's only a year long program so it's not too excessive. But I will be able to alleviate some of his pain and I feel that's worth it.
Sorry that this is so long. Just wanted to say that I do know what you are going through and it's not easy and it's ever changing. And it's often hard to talk about because you don't want you're spouse to feel guilty. It's just how you love someone. You love the entire person.
Love you both. And I hope 2020 is a better year!

I hadn't slept for about a week, and I used one of her yoga for sleep videos. That was my first experience with yoga and now it's been 3 years. It's an amazing thing to experience, especially if you started where I did. Thank you Simon 🙏 it's so nice to be able to feel connected to someone in a similar situation.

  • @estanublado3905
    @estanublado3905 5 лет назад +17

Hey there Simon, I went through a similar experience with exercising this year. Things were falling out of control in my life and I desperately needed an outlet, something that I knew I could work hard at and get then get results. I started running at a capacity I never had before and did my first 10k, then 15k, then a half marathon within just 2 weeks. A week later I did another half marathon over 400m elevation, on mountain terrain. People around me were fairly similar to this comment section- wow that’s amazing, go you etc.
I didn’t stop, I didn’t see the need to, I felt amazing. Cue another week and I was going on a routine run and I felt a pain in my knee but didn’t stop because ‘it would break my stamina’. When I got home I had to lean on the kitchen bench because I could now no longer walk. Long story short, I’d sprained a tendon, and ended up having to limp for several months (painful).
It was my fault for not looking after my body and going overboard. You definitely seem aware of that danger, thankfully. But when I look at the REASONS I went overboard, well.
Rather than running being the outlet for my anxieties, it actually fed them, I was craving control and now I could have it. I wasn’t making peace with my situation, I was literally running away from it. Miss a couple runs and I would feel guilty, yuck, and more anxious. I had become dependent on running for feeling good about myself, and my ability to manage my life. I realised spraining my tendon was maybe the wake up call I needed.
It’s interesting you brought up meditation, which I think is essential. When life gets tough, you may need an outlet, but you also need to process. The two things are pretty key to each other. I think 10mins is not enough. I tend to pray quite a bit, which I guess is kind of like a guided meditation, hahaha. Nowadays I usually pray for as long as I exercise, it tends to turn out that way. Balance.
You’re onto something Simon, you’ve had an extremely hard year and I can only wish you the very best :)

I've struggled with generalized anxiety and panic disorder for most of my life. People can often dismiss things like exercise and meditation when they are suggested because it comes across as so trivial, like the person suggesting it has no idea what mental illness is actually like. Of course it's true that neither of those things can just cure mental illness. But what I found is for me they improve my baseline. Caring for myself through diet, exercise, and meditation has a huge impact on how frequently and severely I get triggered and spiral down into anxiety, and how well I recover. Alternatively it's like my immune system is compromised, I become more susceptible. Even outside of anxiety, meditation and practicing mindfulness has helped me in so many ways. I'm so happy that you have found things that are helping you, and I hope you continue to do what feels good. Sending you and Martina lots of love.

The only time that I felt some depression vibes in this was when you said that you were feeling like a failure, at that point of the video I really wanted to ask if you were okay. After hearing how you feel now that you’re doing everything else, I feel that these changes are good for you, but I do think it’s important that you monitor it, because sometimes we use healthful practices in a maladaptive way and cause more harm than good.
Both of you seem to really stress about the pressure (for lack of a better word) that you might be putting on the other. I love the mutual love and care that you both express, but I hope that you can both see the other person’s heart and feel more settled together. You two together work as a team, remember that will be times where one will do more than the other and vice versa. You don’t need to count these moves when you are both doing as much as can for each other, live in the moment and enjoy those moments of love in action.

Meditation was something I always thought was BS until my therapist challenged me to meditate everyday to help treat my severe depression and anxiety. I never thought it would help but it really does.

I love how I get on RUclips not really knowing what I want to watch and how I end up stuck on your page watching as much as I can before the time runs out. I get stuck 1. Because you 2 are so inspirational 2. I care to see how you guys are doing mentally/physically,. 3. I learn to love myself because of your amazing words. And lastly I truly enjoy just seeing your guys beautiful life, with the ups and downs, you show us to persevere. Thank you guys for always being here sharing you wonderful journey.

    Hey Simon,
As someone who has watched you guys since you first started making videos and watching you both grow, it’s really easing to hear you talk about this from your perspective and to just open up about things. I was very active my entire life, I loved pushing myself even through heavily struggling with a mental illness and going through ECT. Three years ago when I was 19 I suddenly got an autoimmune disorder and now most days I can’t even walk or move without pain. The change has been incredibly sad for me and I spent a long time even questioning whether or not anyone would love me anymore when I had so much trouble just doing the things I love. Watching your video and hearing about Martina made me feel so much less alone in my struggle, and listening to you re enforces that I want to become stronger for myself and change things while I can.
    Thank you Simon

I appreciate your comment. Not a health care professional of any kind myself, but I know that many of us forget that support can actually be that... support. I look at Simon and Martina and am so blown away by how wonderful they are, I forget that they do have a lot on their plates. And a good mirror... for instance it's hard for me to believe that Simon could accomplish so much in his life and yet think of himself as any kind of failure... can make a big difference. And while we're here, may I wish you the very best. I'm in the US and this is Thanksgiving for us. Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, I wish you well.

I may be late to the party, but I wanted just to chip in with my point of view.
Simon, regarding excessiveness you are worried about, it does not seem that at all. The “problem” is you stepped up in your gears with multiple tings to improve yourself, so it may seem to people around you as a coping mechanism to your insecurities (you yourself mentioned). Keep doing what you think and see it helps you. After all, we who watch you so many years see the evolution you had. If it doesn’t suit your needs any more, change again!
To you it may seem slow. But as a person with same “inner self problems” it always seems slow to us. Because you are judging yourself 24/7. Other people see you in increments so any change is shown easily. Also, the isolating bubble you are as foreigners (different thinking, looking) in another country, it does not help. I am not saying you should change this, it just adds up to all your worries and makes them seem bigger. It happens to me when I work as an expat for some months away from anybody. So that’s why I say I get it. :)
Okay, I rambled on too much. But I hope you got my point. You do you, it seems to be good (at least from our perspective).
P.S. - thank you for showing me I am not the only one thinking of oneself like that :)

Thank you Simon I really needed this.
I actually used to go running/ work out every singel day, but I let it slide the
past few months. This gave me the motivation to not only pick it back up but also
    to reevaluate my own headspace.
You're doing great. I wish you two all the best!

I haven’t commented on your video’s for a while but I felt the need to today. I’ve started meditating in the Spring this year and it’s been so SO helpful for me that I hated to hear that you feel like the left out weirdo in your family/friend group. Just like you said in the video meditation never “cured” anxiety for me but it has given me the tools to notice when my mental health declines and to help with it. I’m proud that I’ve taken the step to learn how to take care of myself when life gets a little harder than usual and I think you should be too!! It’s been proven in so many ways how meditation can be beneficial for your mental health. One concept I’ve learned recently is that through meditation you learn how to accept your emotions as a part of you but not as something that you engulfs or drowns you. When I depression or anxiety washes over me now, I take the time to meditate to acknowledge whatever I’m feeling at the moment but also remind myself that my sadness isn’t what I am made of. I think the progress you’ve made so far is amazing! I’m so glad you have put in so much effort to better yourself everyday and hope you never stop doing that :)) I am so proud of you!!

Meditation does get our busy soul to find our true inner self. It gives so much calmness and clarity to our busy daily life. My husband has thyroid problems and his emotional swing has been greatly helped and improved by meditating. Some people don’t believe and think it’s crap but try it, just few minutes a day, it won’t hurt and slowly you will see the benefits of it. Thanks, Simon for bringing up this topic. And glad that you guys are onto this spiritual path.

Oh my gosh !!! I'm literally crying right now and I'm sorry it's not about your story this time but I just found your channel again it's magical because of everything I've been through this year I thought you guys weren't actually real (long "I'm crazy " story) it just brings me back so many memories of when I felt normal and was happy. THANK YOU. You don't know it but its a feeling I have missed for so long to just instantly have because you guys are still here
