Thankfully he doesn't actually have to give Worf the satisfaction of saying he agrees, he simply acts like Worf didn't say anything and gives an order to the ensign. Research like that doesn't happen overnight, so we never see it again because it would take many years to perfect and then implement on every starship. Perhaps say 30 years or so after this, Barcleys transfiguration is the basis of the new shield norm.

    • @bugen5
      @bugen5 3 года назад +62

      The ship dropped out of warp, which could mean that massive amounts of power had to be diverted, not only from the engines, but probably other systems as well. Maneuverability, phasers, not to mention all the other systems Barclay had to reroute power through, making those systems inoperable. Even then, that 300% increase to shields is probably only good to withstand one massive hit, and then you're left defenseless with no systems.
      Not good for a dog fight, but more as a last ditch effort.
      But you are right about how the computer should have a record of how he did it, what inputs he made on the console. This last-ditch-extreme-emergency protocol should be available for every starship.

    I'm sure this modification by Barclay was kept by Geordie, and was later sent probably to SCE (Starfleet Corps of Engineering) and Montgomery Scott, now the head of SCE probably researched it along with LaForge, and came to the conclusion it was a sound idea and was implemented in one way or another throughout the fleet. Larger ships would eventually have a secondary warp drive (Reference: The Ross Class) which could use its secondary warp reactor to further reinforce the shields and power phasers to unheard of levels.
    For smaller ships, additional generators like dilithium and fusion were added as a "interim" method until a small enough secondary warp reactor could be created. But it started with Barclay, and I wouldn't be surprised if Barclay was truly one of the Federation's finest minds. If not THE finest mind the Federation has produced. He compares favorably to Cochrane, Setar of Vulcan, Noonian Soong, Ira Graves, Nog of Ferenginar, Spock of Vulcan, and Reginald Barclay.

    I just watched this episode and, man, the senior staff do not take kindly to Barclay knowing things. He literally saved the ship from that probe and they start being suspicious of him. At least Picard said thank you. It's obvious they don't really respect him, even when he saves them. Geordi seems resentful when Barclay comes up with a solution to save the Argus Array. The only one nonplussed about the whole thing was Data. You would think that if suddenly a member of your crew is the smartest human being ever, that you'd use him or her as an invaluable resource. He could have relayed so much information to Data who would know exactly what Reg was doing, preserving that information. But, oh well. Still a good episode.

      It’s an underlying theme across many episodes, that the ‘main cast’ outside of Data and Picard are often guilty of ego, favouritism and bias. They even acknowledge it at times, a nod to even a perfect society never really being able to be ‘perfect’. A lesson many are ignoring today.

    • @postplays
      @postplays 8 месяцев назад

      It never sat well with me the way Geordi treated him in any episode. He's supposedly this open-minded person but treats someone with an obvious social disorder very poorly. It doesn't reflect on Geordi well and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth about his true character overall throughout the whole series. I'm glad that main characters have flaws to show they're just people, but, at least to me, his treatment of Barclay was just horrible. His rants about him were unprofessional and uncalled for. As a leader he should have taken his issues to Barclay himself, rather than rant to his colleagues the way he would. Unbecoming of someone in the military to boot.

    • @troyjollimore4100
      @troyjollimore4100 8 месяцев назад

      @@postplays The character has to obey the will of the writers for that particular episode. They were trying to show it as a ‘flaw’ of most of the main cast, and that Barclay didn’t deserve that kind of treatment. OTOH, the command staff talking about him among themselves that way IS a thing. They are hoping their peers might have a suggestion on how to get him to improve, in an informal setting that didn’t have to show up on a permanent record. Also, it has been established the Enterprise was a ship only the BEST of the best got to serve on. They weren’t used to anyone getting there that couldn’t always operate above expected standards.

    But actually, if the regular one had zero effect, they should have known this wouldn't help either.
    I'd have moved away sooner, and gone to warp as soon as it was clear the probe was matching speed.
    Also, visually the distance is totally fine for photon torpedoes. ... And I also seem to remember you can prime those things with lower intensity.

Startfleet is still military enough that any junior officer bypassing his department head *and* the executive officer is sure to get in trouble. Being RIGHT and having so little time to act or explain the action would not necessarily save Barclay's backside. Picard thanking Barclay by name signaled "let it go" to Riker. The look on the female engineer's face says it - she knows Barclay really dove head first in a big pile of ... trouble. If Picard had said "Thank you, Mr LaForge" or "Thank you, Engineering"...Barclay would have been up on charges in an hour.
