I just got Northgard and the tuck boxes in there are pretty cool...only stores about 6 cards but it stores all your troops...it's nice to just hand each player a color tuck box.
@@JasonSmithPsychedelicTherapist Very good! Very good indeed. I've played it with 2, 3, and 4 players and it was enjoyable every time. There are some nice mechanics in this game. I enjoy the deckbuilding, and combat isn't too mean (in most cases you won't lose troops as much as having to retreat territory).
Ah no not currently, but do plan on doing one here in the next few months. I'm in a rental right now but will be in my final home her come around January with an actual room for gaming and I'll share it all then for sure :) Table is great though! It's an Alpha Game table and it's perfect for being out of the way when you need it, but also big if you need it to. firmerterra.com What you see here now is it folded in half, so 4x3 feet. It folds out to 6x4 feet also has leg extensions to make it taller. That's ideal for me as I play Warhammer on it as well and I stand while playing that, so the height is really nice. It also folds completely down and can be put in a closet. Really has been perfect for my needs.
Hey KoA, great video! I wonder if you might provide us with some information regarding Mythic Games soon: I heard things are not going too well for them at the moment... Anyways, keep up the good work and thanks for this review!
@thekingofaverage amazing breakdown, I backed the ancestral pledge and seeing your review actually gets me excited to play after that disaster of a Kickstarter lol
Hi, we are thinking of ordering this to the uk. Do you think Mythic Games are financially stable? We haven’t had a reply from them about one of our orders so we are worried about spending over $300 on the stagecoach bundle on their eshop. Thank you for your help and advice. We like your videos.
Very helpful review. Thank you! What about replay? I feel like I can play the video game for the rest of my life. Is this more of a “one-time through” game?
It boggles the mind really. Any technical writer worth their salt can whip up an index in a day. If you don't have a technical writer, then get one. You're writing a technical document. It amazes me that companies can claim to be all about the gameplay but put so little effort, and money, toward ensuring the player plays it correctly.
My rule book mentions height advantage. Plus 1 acc against an opponent in a lower altitude. I don’t know why they went with grey arrows for the symbol…
In the computer game, when the last monster die, you do not have more actions, does not matter if you did not act that turn, combat is over. Hope to be helpfull.
Glad to hear this is good. Mythic Games has it 15% off until Halloween. I need to save money and will probably pass, but I hope it makes a lot of sales from people who were on the fence so I will have a chance of getting my Hel pledge fulfilled.
I was tempted for a long time by this game; I'm simple person, so apart from every pros or cons this game may have, I check how much it costs. They are giving a 15% discount right now (they say) and this is what I get for the core pledge only: Subtotal $170.00 Shipping $40.00 Tax $42.00 Total $252.00 plus you have to convert dollars in eur (coz that's where I live), which is not good for Europeans right now. So, the real question; is it worth? I am pretty sure that you dont get the Cove Expansion, The Warrens Expansion and the weald in this core box right ? I understand there are tons of minis and materials, I understand it's high quality, etc etc... I stil believe it's overpriced, the KS core box was 100 dollars, am I wrong to compare the two prices? Am I missing something ?
The big difference between the two is logistics, and risk. The first is on their side, the second on our side. Logistically, companies use 3PL's (third party logistics) companies to organize and distribute their product. On the webstore that is either done manually by them, or paid at a higher rate since it's a one-off every time someone orders something. Risk wise, everyone that backed the campaign risked their money on a product that wasn't made. They were out of that money for over a year with no product in return. To incentivize people who parted with their money earlier, the company offers a steeper discount. What you're seeing now is an already made product that will ship to you shortly after you give them your money, so not really the same transaction. All that being said, $252 is dumb. It's a great game, really is, but that's certainly pricey. Tomorrow I'll have a video going over some great game deals available right now that put that price to shame.
Just found this channel and subscribed immediately after the tuck box rant. I'm curious how someone who's played this would compare to the dark souls board game.
:D Just a way of conveying how important an index is :) The first few play sessions of a game are CRUCIAL for continued play, and that's exactly when you need an index handy.
Rule book not clear = "house rule" everything, just a thought. I'm more interested in using the pieces than i am in playing this game. The game has been over hyped for several years and making DLC content and sequels didn't make it any more easier or desirable, for me, to wasn't to play the game ever. I'm a visual learner and am finding visual objects help in idea creating for book writing.
Started solo with my 1st campaign run. After Act 1 and the Level 1 Necromancer killed I am very satisfied with the experience so far. The gameplay is so much fun. Super cool skill combos, lots of interesting options you have during hero turn and their progression, variable monsters, etc. No need to mention the beautiful art style. I am quite curious how my 1st campaign proceeds and how far I will come :-D Hopefully, the fun will last over the whole campaign and the 11 quests.
Ah thank you! I will pin a comment updating this. I actually took that picture and sent it to Mythic Games asking about it as I couldn't find it in the rulebook (I recalled it from my Details video but not the final rulebook read I had) and they "thought" it was elevation but then never confirmed if it was in the final rulebook. Thanks! Thankfully it doesn't come up much at all.
LOL NARGA :P That is my wargaming table, 6'x4' but in half length wise, so what you see here is 3'x4' -> It's a great test to see how much table sprawl a game has! IMO, if it fits on this, it's actually pretty compact.
It's kind a harsh and true what you said about mythic games. There is always 1.5 version and that's says it all. Very nice review! I didn't pay extra money so i wonder when they decide to deliver game itself. Get a refund on Hel because it takes so so so long. So pissed they communicate through other platform then KS about news. So stupid. Me personally walking away from backing their games. They need to step up with crowdfunding.
KoA have you seen how hard they are trying to sell the kickstarter stock they have from the people who didn't pay for the extra shipping? Should we bring worried about mythic games?
I have gotten the 800 emails yes :D And I am indeed worried about them. I think they need to do something more drastic to get an influx of money to get the ball rolling again.
Please can you do a video about how to fit everything into the core box? As it’s one of the worst storage solutions ever. It is hard to believe that this game from the same company who did Solomon Kanes box (which was excellent!). Your comment on tuckboxes is fully justified and considering the games price point it is an embarrassment. Very nice review btw KoA.
Understandable! For me, as I said, I'd pick this over the video game if given the option. The reduction in grind alone is welcome :) Probably my largest complain about the video game.
House rules were mentioned at least two times, which are my own personal "tuckboxes". I would like to ask, if there are rules that REALLY need to be house ruled, or is just a s*tty rulebook, and correct/misprinted/missing answers have to be found here and there. Still have my unopened KS game, and the bgg rating gives me a headache, as there are plenty of other great unopened games to play.
Very important distinction right? There are house rules where it's the only thing that makes the game work, but there are others that are just customized. It's one of the reasons I love analog board games, that sense of control. For instance: I played Descent 2E with my young daughter. She was able to pick her attacks mostly okay on her own with some guidance but often wouldn't put enough "oomph" into her attacks, making her not kill the bad guy she attacked. Being able to "fake" the damage so she actually killed it is the sort of custom rules that makes me adore analog board games. She had her own "Kylynn Criticals" rule in our house and absolutely loved murderizing my skeletons and goblins. Alternatively there are games like say, Reichbusters where we house ruled that you didn't have to check noise for over half the instances the rules state you should. It usually was a test to determine nothing happened (read, pointless) and happened constantly. That's fixing something broken :D It's one of the things I take into account for app base games actually, as it does limit that ability to customize.
I watched your video review, I hate tuckboxes! And then to get another opinion I then watched Quackalope's video, tuckboxes? I love tuckboxes! Lol! I agree with you though.
Funny thing, Joan of arc 1.5 had a crap ton of problems, and it's their only "1.5" where do you base your thoughts that mythic does 1.5 well, because in the case of Joan it was pretty bad and the QA was horrendous.
Since then they have utilized the 2nd wave to ship a free 1.5 fix. You might recall getting a ton of cards and updates for Reichbusters for instance. Their original rulebook even had a bit of French in the English copy that they fixed :D I say "1.5" but I really just mean "fixes after delivery" in most cases was Wave 1. They also normally post a pretty verbose errata/FAQ digitally as well. SFB was solid. Solomon Kane only had a minor one. Before Darkest Dungeon I felt they were improving on that part quite well, certainly trending away from that.
@@TheKingofAverage well, my experience with Joan 1.5 was really bad, there were mistakes in the scenarios AGAIN and many mistakes in the boxes too... Like the fact that we didn't get bases for the teutonic expansion, the misprinted cards, the bent towers in the siege, the misprinted tokens, the wrong number of sleeves and many more. Regarding Reich busters 1.5 "free" errata pack, it had many mistakes too, both on the enemy cards and most importantly the FAQ wasn't implemented properly on the heroes, they used some kind of wrong errata files, also the room cards were all misprinted. Mythic games are sloppy and amateurish. I have stopped supporting them and I don't intend too ever again. They managed to make mistakes on DD too... Sloppy sloppy sloppy. I dread what we will receive (if we ever do) from hel, if real professionals like awaken realms can make mistakes in the story books, the amateurs of mythic are going to seriously mess things up...
My negative thoughts on this game are almost as same as yours, the storage boxes and rulebook are crap, I hate them! I did the same thing to the boxes, they're designed to be tore apart I suppose. And if you tend to sleeve the cards, the box can't hold. Just throw them away , they're useless. The rule book is a mess. I never play the PC game, our first playthrough is a nightmare, we have to watch every content creators' video to really have the clue to play it right. Mythic Games's rulebooks always have issues. Overall this is a wonderful game, my group loves it.
In spite of all that right? That's what makes it hurt worse - it's a fantastic game, but the execution can hinder it for those not willing to push past them.
To me the most fundamental point of Darkest dungeon PC was constantly de-escalating my party from getting stressed, gaining negative perks and attitudes, and going psycho. True example: My warrior took a hit and developed ARROGANCE: "I do this myself", why my Swordman got pissed and against my will moved to the back row, which triggered my already bleeding 1HP Rouge into RECKLESSNESS: "let me try something" and moved to the frontline where he screwed up his attack and got even more stressed, developing MASOCHISM. As I tried to heal him with my occultist, he heroically refused it with the words "pain only makes me stronger" and dropped dead bleeding to death. I was laughing slightly insane asking myself: "what the fuck has just happened!?"
hah! Truth man. I found the video game much harder because of this. It's fundamentally meant for you to have several "teams" that you use while the others recover whereas the board game assumes mostly just the 1 team.
@@TheKingofAverage so this whole mental trauma toppic was kicked for the boardgame? You noticed stressareas but not their effect. In no other game was I ever that worried my party would tear it self appart. Reminds me of the horror movie "boddies boddies boddies" 😂
Does it matter if the game is a masterpiece if folks are too salty to play the game if they ever even get all of the pieces? Sorry for the negativity. I'm still salty as hell. Thanks for the video and I'm glad you are enjoying the game. Mythic has turned me off from all future kickstarters that aren't 3D or PDF based.
I refunded my pledge of monsterpocalypse, love the game but no longer trust mythic. Could back minor things like expansions for reichbusters o darkest dungeon
Not a fan of glossy components. Also not a fan of this game. Looked like too much of a grind to me so passed on it with no regreats, no fomo. Also glad I didn’t have to worry about the ransom money they wanted. That was pretty pathetic in my opinion.
Sounds like a fun ok game. Now the game system I love is called D100 Dungeon by Martin Knight! D100 Dungeon Mapping game with books makes it totally awesome!

Keep up the great work! Did you back the Gambler's Chest? Would be great to see you paint those once we finally get that in 2025 or whenever that actually delivers :D
Thanks for the info! And yes, I backed a whole bunch of KDM stuff including the Gambler's Chest, like, years ago! Still, looking forward to painting it up, eventually.. 😁
'Their best sloppy masterpiece yet' 🤣🤣🤣
True to style.... (I like sloppy masterpieces).
The 'choose this over the video game IS a GREAT endorsement'
I tried to compare to the video game several times as I know like me, many have played the video game and are fans of that and are wondering how this stacks up :)
Sloppy but good describes most every MG game I've ever played :(
I just got Northgard and the tuck boxes in there are pretty cool...only stores about 6 cards but it stores all your troops...it's nice to just hand each player a color tuck box.
Tee! How is Northgard?
@@JasonSmithPsychedelicTherapist Very good! Very good indeed. I've played it with 2, 3, and 4 players and it was enjoyable every time. There are some nice mechanics in this game. I enjoy the deckbuilding, and combat isn't too mean (in most cases you won't lose troops as much as having to retreat territory).
@@teestarbird4478 Love Northgard. In my top 3 right now!
Do you have a video of your setup? table, shelves, etc? would be keen to know what and where you got it from. looks fantastic
Ah no not currently, but do plan on doing one here in the next few months. I'm in a rental right now but will be in my final home her come around January with an actual room for gaming and I'll share it all then for sure :)
Table is great though! It's an Alpha Game table and it's perfect for being out of the way when you need it, but also big if you need it to. firmerterra.com
What you see here now is it folded in half, so 4x3 feet.
It's a lot of fun! :)
I heard you mentioning the use of tuck boxes. What do you think of them?
hah! I hate them! :D
Ruin has come to our tabletop.
haha love it! :D
It atonish me that most companies frown on indexes, it is a minor thing to do but major thing to have 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
It boggles the mind really. Any technical writer worth their salt can whip up an index in a day. If you don't have a technical writer, then get one. You're writing a technical document.
It amazes me that companies can claim to be all about the gameplay but put so little effort, and money, toward ensuring the player plays it correctly.
Thank you for the review! Love the source material and have been curious. Play a lot of board games.
Also, love the shirt!
My rule book mentions height advantage. Plus 1 acc against an opponent in a lower altitude. I don’t know why they went with grey arrows for the symbol…
Yep you are correct, messed up in that one (I did look, and then asked and never heard back, so tried to get it right) :)
could you tell us what are the misprint, may be looking to buy the game ?
Cool review and I’m loving my copy as well
Glad to hear it! My kids keep asking for me to play more than I'm able too which is a good sign :)
my king have spoken... time to spread his words ...... and tumbs up
In the computer game, when the last monster die, you do not have more actions, does not matter if you did not act that turn, combat is over. Hope to be helpfull.

"Fucking tuck-boxes!"
Hah!
Great review! How many campaigns have you failed and how many have you won? ;)
Glad to hear this is good. Mythic Games has it 15% off until Halloween. I need to save money and will probably pass, but I hope it makes a lot of sales from people who were on the fence so I will have a chance of getting my Hel pledge fulfilled.
hah! You aren't alone in that hope :D
fully agree on the tuckboxes… Not a good idea
I was tempted for a long time by this game; I'm simple person, so apart from every pros or cons this game may have, I check how much it costs. They are giving a 15% discount right now (they say) and this is what I get for the core pledge only:
Subtotal $170.00
Shipping $40.00
Tax $42.00
Total $252.00
plus you have to convert dollars in eur (coz that's where I live), which is not good for Europeans right now.
We are finally getting it. Well this aged well. Are you going to hand back any money Mythic paid you to help refund the backers who got suckered in?
How many kikstarter only game asset were present? Anything mandatory?
Just found this channel and subscribed immediately after the tuck box rant. I'm curious how someone who's played this would compare to the dark souls board game.
Hah! Welcome 😁
If you need an index for a 2-page rule book - you need glasses. Despite that, great, honest review.
:D Just a way of conveying how important an index is :) The first few play sessions of a game are CRUCIAL for continued play, and that's exactly when you need an index handy.
Tuck boxes LOL! Your reaction is priceless and spot on!
They are literally the devil.
Do you need a DM for this kind of game or is it self ran?
Self ran. The enemies operate based on an "AI" that's on their card which tells you what they do.
Rule book not clear = "house rule" everything, just a thought. I'm more interested in using the pieces than i am in playing this game. The game has been over hyped for several years and making DLC content and sequels didn't make it any more easier or desirable, for me, to wasn't to play the game ever. I'm a visual learner and am finding visual objects help in idea creating for book writing.
nice review. can't wait to get wave 1
Soon enough! Emails were sent out today for the U.S.
I am quite curious how my 1st campaign proceeds and how far I will come :-D
Hopefully, the fun will last over the whole campaign and the 11 quests.
6:38 page 25 in the rulebook high and low ground
Ah thank you! I will pin a comment updating this. I actually took that picture and sent it to Mythic Games asking about it as I couldn't find it in the rulebook (I recalled it from my Details video but not the final rulebook read I had) and they "thought" it was elevation but then never confirmed if it was in the final rulebook. Thanks!
Thankfully it doesn't come up much at all.
What size is your table?
Asking the real personal questions up in here.
LOL NARGA :P
That is my wargaming table, 6'x4' but in half length wise, so what you see here is 3'x4' -> It's a great test to see how much table sprawl a game has! IMO, if it fits on this, it's actually pretty compact.
@@TheKingofAverage Very cool. Just wanted to see if it’d fit my table comfortably. Thanks!
Yeah it's certainly been messy!
At least the end result is still quite good (though with some issues still)
KoA have you seen how hard they are trying to sell the kickstarter stock they have from the people who didn't pay for the extra shipping? Should we bring worried about mythic games?
I have gotten the 800 emails yes :D
And I am indeed worried about them. I think they need to do something more drastic to get an influx of money to get the ball rolling again.
@@TheKingofAverage makes me worried cause Anastyr looks so good! 😞
Time to start a campaign to send you 500 tuckboxes with an assortment of hidden treasures inside.
I'd both hate and love you :D
When is this game gonna be available for purcharse ?
you can buy it on their web store right now actually. A bit pricey though.
Thanks for these really in depth reviews! I’m still on the fence about this. Love the video game tho.
Understandable! For me, as I said, I'd pick this over the video game if given the option. The reduction in grind alone is welcome :) Probably my largest complain about the video game.
@@TheKingofAverage if you had to choose between Darkest Dungeon and Oathsworn, which would you have to go with?
That's fixing something broken :D
It's one of the things I take into account for app base games actually, as it does limit that ability to customize.
Nice review, thank you.
You are very welcome!
👍 Excellent review. Perfectly structured.
Really glad you liked it and I hope it was helpful :)
I watched your video review, I hate tuckboxes! And then to get another opinion I then watched Quackalope's video, tuckboxes? I love tuckboxes! Lol! I agree with you though.
hah!
My kingdom for an index!
Their original rulebook even had a bit of French in the English copy that they fixed :D
I say "1.5" but I really just mean "fixes after delivery" in most cases was Wave 1.
My sons arrived today and oh man how do u play lol
Is it possible to still get this game?
Yes from their webstore, though it is pricey.
Great game but the shiny reflective boards are a pain to play with
haha literally the worst part for me :D
To me the most fundamental point of Darkest dungeon PC was constantly de-escalating my party from getting stressed, gaining negative perks and attitudes, and going psycho.
True example:
My warrior took a hit and developed ARROGANCE: "I do this myself",
why my Swordman got pissed and against my will moved to the back row,
which triggered my already bleeding 1HP Rouge into RECKLESSNESS: "let me try something" and moved to the frontline
where he screwed up his attack and got even more stressed, developing MASOCHISM.
Haters will say Mythic Games used their last money to bribe you :P
I guarantee they couldn't afford me haha
@@TheKingofAverage would you like this into the am tee shirt? Just kidding 😂
@@rodneyaudley2980 nerdy shirts - my only weakness!
They have no money therefore this cannot be true
Great job Mike.
Thank you very much Ron!
And look how organized the board game collection is!!!
Does it matter if the game is a masterpiece if folks are too salty to play the game if they ever even get all of the pieces? Sorry for the negativity. I'm still salty as hell. Thanks for the video and I'm glad you are enjoying the game. Mythic has turned me off from all future kickstarters that aren't 3D or PDF based.
hah! Yeah good point :)
You aren't alone there. THANKFULLY this is an exception to the common experience we have with KS board games.
I REALLY hope this gives them enough cash to make Monsterpocalypse... I put a lot of money into that game
Good! Best not to have any FOMO of any kind when deciding against something.
You are the best.
Hardly sir. But I appreciate the comment and am ecstatic that you've enjoyed the video!
Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
haha can't even read this without his voice in my head.
Still waiting for the game

I hate tuck boxes! Amen, and I'm an atheist so that's saying something!
I'll accept the affirmation either way :D
Sounds like a fun ok game. Now the game system I love is called D100 Dungeon by Martin Knight!
D100 Dungeon Mapping game with books makes it totally awesome!
About the tuck boxes I hate them too and mine go direct to the trash. Waste of cardboard 🤬
really that's what I should do.
The sound is kinda far, maybe wrong mic setting?
Still getting used to this different camera setting for reviews. Sorry about that!
