For oil paints, avoid using Ivory black as the pigments are heavier and tend to create a grainy texture. Instead, use a chromatic black or payne's gray mixed in with just a tiny amount of black. I also found lots of success mixing a brown with the black to help stabilize the wash. Good luck!
Awesome, good suggestions! I definitely noticed the grainy look with ivory black (W&N), but not too long ago bought a Mars black to attempt to solve that. I'll give it a shot! I didn't think of mixing in a bit of brown or payne's grey, I'll try that as well. Thanks for the advice 🙂
@@PaintingWithBennett Glad I could help. How are you getting on with the game, btw? My friends and I like the sculpts of the minis but were turned off by the admin required to keep the game running smoothly. Surprisingly, I found Gloomhaven less fiddly.
Yeah, the token upkeep is a lot, but we're enjoying it a good amount (about halfway through our first campaign.) There isn't nearly as much gameplay depth as Gloomhaven/Frosthaven, which are 10/10 games in my book, but I see DD as a more beer-and-pretzels version of a dungeon crawl co-op, where the setting/theme/minis really carry it. It's a solid game that we're enjoying but, honestly, unless everyone you play it with is a DD videogame fan you're probably better served with GH/FH. Those games have a roughly equal amount of admin, but they also have absolutely crunchy gameplay to back them up
Always happy to see tutorials for the DD minis! It looks like our techniques are pretty similar, though in the words of Inigo Montoya - "I admit it, you are better than I am"
This might just be the video that convinces me to finally buy the board game! I'm not sure how good the actual board game is but I can't not love the minis
Interesting, I'm not entirely sure, but it could be the primer is tacky due to a humidity or temperature issue when the primer cures? You could try scrubbing/rinsing the models with a toothbrush and dish soap as well. I really like the Vallejo spray primer, but it is fairly pricey (and is solvent-based, so it WILL reactivate if you use oil paints on it.)
Amazing work. How many hours does it take you per hero mini? I really want to try to learn these advanced techniques for painting, but I also want to finish a figure within a reasonable time
Thanks! It depends a bit on the mini, and filming slows it down a bit, but the Bounty Hunter was around 1.5 hours, I think the Abomination and transformation together were about 3ish hours. Easily the step that takes the longest is adding the pure black shadows and recess shades by brush. If you want to save a lot of time, you could prime the models black, drybrush them white, and then after using speedpaints/contrast paints just do the black wash step, and that would probably leave the shadows dark enough. Also, my suggestion is that it's ok to paint some of the minis to different levels. You could try painting one or two heroes, or one boss or something, with some advanced techniques, but still just paint the rest of the models super quick.
I think I'll consider taking them if it's not a huge project! Commission painting like 100 minis for someone on a deadline seems like way too much for me though 😅
Would you consider providing this as a service? I was thinking of snagging the board game for the holidays... I was wondering what you would charge for everything you did here? Just curious!
Potentially! I'd probably price my time at around $20/hour, and it's tricky to estimate because painting 3 identical minions is very different from painting 3 unique huge boss minis. I'd probably focus a bit more on speed, so a really rough ballpark is ~$40 per hero/boss, maybe a bit less for the small monsters?
@PaintingWithBennett that is AWESOME!!! I really appreciate the pricing, and you taking the time to reply. Of course, I would pay through PayPal g+s for our safety 💎. I'll contact you when I have the actual board game, around the holidays, to see if your still interested! Timing isn't a bother either, and I trust you 💯% because of your channel. Talk to you soon!

As a 3D modeler making a game I love this a lot I’ll start watching this channel
I dig your style bennett.
Thank you! 🙂

Haha, I'm sure yours are great! I also have the advantage of not showing all of my fails on-camera 😅
I love the abomination, but they all look very nice
Thank you! 🙂
Amazing painting of an amazing game. I just unbox it. Lovely minies.
Thank you! The minis are awesome, I love that they match poses from the game as well
@@PaintingWithBennett i like the first game only managed to do 300 in the endless with vestal jester hw shield breaker
@@smoothbrush4722 Damn, nice!

Great video man😃😃
Thank you! 🙂
Great job! I haven't started mine yet but I plan on doing some tutorials as well. Hopefully they turn out this good!
I'm sure they will! If you have any questions or want advice I'm happy to help 🙂
Super cool
Nice

The game itself is fun but not groundbreaking (the theme is the best part), but yeah the minis have been so much fun to paint!
What primer did you use for these? My usual 2x Rustoleum primer ended up very tacky and I heard it could be because the PVC blend they are using.

So when are you going to start taking commission jobs?

If you're willing to do 13 how do I get in touch?@@PaintingWithBennett
You can message me on IG, the link is in all (or at least most of) my video descriptions!

Sounds good! Just send me a DM here or on Instagram or something when you've got the game if you want to talk more about it!
