  • We're back in the Nomad with Mur and Dani Today. This 55 has been cruising absolutely flawlessly lately. You don't have to twist my arm to hard to go for a drive and talk hotrods.
Today we discuss "car guy karma" in a big way. You get what you give with old cars. Big RUclipsr's are buying everything up, is that good or bad for the rest of us? And of course, weird tools with Mur.

I've been driving a stick for 35 plus years and every time it stops at the light or stop sign, I knock it in neutral and I've only had to replace the clutch twice in 270k MI

      @xephael3485 3 месяца назад +6

No need to do that. Clutch out is clutch out... Doesn't matter what you put the gearbox in. I'd say it's extra wear and tear not to move the gearbox to the gear you'll be using.

I'm the same way. Pull up to the lights and the car goes in neutral. For me it's just a habit from riding motorcycles. If you have ever riden a Harley with a cable operated clutch, you know exactly why. Shifting into neutral does not put any extra wear on any components. Like Mur said it's taking the pressure off the release bearing which is absolutely true. Drive a standard trans however you like. It doesn't matter to me one bit. On my motorcycles I only use the clutch for stopping and starting. I won't say never, but I hardly ever use it for shifting between the gears. If you know how to rev match the motor to trans you will never have an issue. I've been driving manual transmissions for close to 40 years. I'm also a licensed automotive mechanic and have changed literally hundreds of clutches, so I kinda know what I'm talking about.

AHAA!! My 61 Impala had an owner's manual and in it it stated that "with a manual 3-speed transmission, when coming to a Stop, always move the lever into Neutral until completely stopped." Which makes sense with a non-synchro 1st gear. I think this was removed once 1st gears became synchronized.

Quality control is a big issue it seems. But I too remember when a car with 100,000 miles was considered junk, but now people buy them for 10's of thousands with 100 or even 150,000 miles on them.
The Toyota engine problem is not nearly the issue the internet is making of it. While there is a problem, they are correcting it. It's just odd that when a manufacturer is correcting something it's bad, but when they pretend it isn't happening it's good. Like rusty frames, while every single manufacturer has frames that rust, only one decided to replace many of them, so they are considered the only one whose frames rust. Meanwhile every brand has vehicles in scrap from the same issue.
    The internet is great.

Sorry Dan, but I bought a cam/lifter/spring/chain and gear kit from Comp in 2020. The break-in procedure was VERY specific. If you miss ONE STEP, you could wipe the Cam. I was very careful to follow the procedure to the Letter, and it worked out great. Car still runs fantastic.

    • @deadclutch

With the wave of bad lifters and shady cams out in the parts world right now, you could follow every step dotting the i's and crossing the T's with a bible in your hand and still wipe em' out.. I know several shops who have resorted to doing all break ins on video now because so many poorly made parts have made their way on to aftermarket suppliers shelves they have no other way of covering their butts.

    • @stevebriggs884

If you drive a Semi Truck you never want to be caught in neutral, in hilly country you will be looking for the runaway ramp at the bottom of the hill.
In 50 years of driving with a clutch I have never coasted in neutral, I try to be in the correct next gear, at a stop light I am in gear unless it’s a jam.
And let the clutch out before revving the engine, not the other way around. In or out!

Yea, for someone like me and Mur who have been around for "awhile", it's really sad how ALL (NOT JUST AUTOMOTIVE) of the companies have completely ABANDONED any semblance of "quality control" in favor of "max profit" all the way down to the basic engineering design of the "engine block" (2013-17 Ford Escape) to the point where their HORRIBLE design allows the head gasket to blow by 60K miles and the gears on the end of the overhead cams and the crank trigger pulley have no "index keyway" machined in them. WTF ????? WHO APPROVES THIS ???? All of that bad enough, when someone tries to repair the issue and does everything correct (based upon RUclips videos since the manufacturer wants $2500.00 for a manual), it produces the "check engine light" since you need to use "NEW diamond encrusted washers" on all of those "keyless" shaft/gear interfaces or they will move when the engine runs. I have talked to multiple people/mechanics who have done this job multiple times in order to get past the recurring "check engine" light. ;o( GARBAGE !!!

'Old Guy Alert!' The thing is, that 55 Nomad is a highly optioned top-level car. Just like SS Chevelles came with upgraded wheels, so should your beautiful Nomad. It just doesn't look right being a top-level car, but having base level wheels. Right? Imagine taking the SS wheels away from the Chevelle and substituting standard hubcaps, it wouldn't look right. That is what us old guys see every time we see your high-level Nomad with poverty caps. Inappropriate. Please try out those mags you have that were lying next to it. You can always go back to the poverty caps if you want to.

Right now a lot of the cams that Summit are selling homemade by competition but you got to be careful some of them are still ill Chinese cams or American cams and I know that the ones that I bought about 2 years ago our kind of Redskins and the ones that I've got lately I don't worry about it at all. I think the one in the car about yesterday it had the fireball which is a crane cam Harvey still on the company and it was American Cam I would say that that's a good cam but I would still check I was still check the lifters to make sure that they got the that they would rock on a a straight edge

That's why I support youtubers to save these cars by watching the ads the whole way through. Because without us doing that, then people like Dan can't save these cars the way they need to be saved. You can call him a hack, but that's total bullshyt because he rebuilds them structurally correct, so you kids calling him a hacker are full of bullshyt and don't have a clue what you are talking about!

I watched a video recently of a 10 year old pickup truck that half of the electrical systems were intermittently faulting, leaving it undrivable. The problem was traced down to ONE frayed wire at one taillight. What a joke

When I was in the Government run driving school (1987) we were told to leave it in gear at a stop. If you get rear ended the car will stall and not go into traffic, in neutral you are projectile into traffic.

Good evening from Cape Cod 🐋 Danielle sitting in the back smiling the whole trip was starting to freak me out, I'm used to Danielle talking 😂 One thing RUclips did was artificially inflate the price of rust, everybody thinks their car is worth something now. I've been buying and selling mostly trucks since 1982, I don't sell anything until I've driven it personally and deam it 100% roadworthy. Thanks for another wonderful Monday with Murr episode guys 👍✌️🇺🇲🇨🇦

They teach you in CDL class to not pop it in neutral when stopped at a red light. No professional truck driver is holding their foot on the clutch pedal for a red light, at least not the ones that haven't had a knee replacement or are on their way towards one. There's more argument to just put it in neutral than to hold the pedal down
