  • Optimizing a map's portals. Not area portals, not world portals, not Portal 2, just portals. I've seen a lot of mappers struggle with this so I've made a video to clear it up.

    Now that I've done this video I've finally found some other videos on this topic: • Stinger's source tutor... Reason I didn't find them before is the keyword was "func_detail"

    Finally....a helpful, clear, precise, well explained, contextual example video breaking this stuff down. Absolutely fantastic! If I could I'd give you a hug because now I understand this after countless unhelpful other tutorials and videos.

    Thank you so much, I'm making my first map and everyone online just said to "optimize the map" with literally no explanation how. I just assumed every block started as a func_detail.

    WOW First tutorial with actual helpful information how to optimize correctly thank you! Also you can change lightmaps. Easiest way is to select the entire map then use the texture face editor. Change lightmaps to 64 for max performance or 32 for balanced. 16 bit lightmaps use a SLEW of memory and source is a resource hog anyway!!

    Just an FYI, but this will only work for games using the Source 2007 SDK and higher. Any mods that were created on the 2006 SDK will not have this feature. To do this in the 2006 verson, you can go in game, turn cheats on and set mat_leafvis to 1 to see the different portals in the map.

    This is slick. I've been using the in-game tools to check this stuff out.
    And, generally familiar with details, what they do and all that. But yeah, this is great. I guess I'm an advanced user, so yeah man, nice. Now, more advanced.
    Also, you've covered leaks in this video. Slick.
    The outlier bits of handy source knowledge are the best parts. Thanks

    Black Mesa developers should have taken note of this. Some of their maps are terribly unoptimized because of improper use of the area portals. Too many leaks causing eveything to be rendered at once.

    I made almost everything a func_detail, and its just made a fuckton more portal, and the map still cant compile. What can i do?

    im trying to make less portals, but the problem is that when i make more func_detail the portals are still there,
    any idea how to fix this? (yes, i alredy tried reloading the portal file, many times)
    im using Hammer++ btw

      Can't say offhand, sometimes it just makes random portals. Don't worry too much about any particular blue line, just try to reduce them as much as you can.

      Aha ... no, one of the mappers for the game I'm working on needed some help with it, so I decided to make a video so everyone else will know too. :)

      Is func wall wc3.3 the same as detail source?
