It has a lot of depth to the combat, the special moves with weapons and unique abilities were awesome, and the magic is dope.

For the vestige system. there's an explanation. the game was NOT supposed to have any single pre-made vestige like you see now. All vestiges were supposed to be player made, and temporary. that's why the superb inter connectivity between a lot of areas and how every area leads back to the hub, because the hub was the only place with a permanent pre-made vestige.
that's also why in NG cycles, the amount of vestiges reduce, leading to zero by i assume NG+3. which is exactly what the devs wanted to be the first NG to be.

    • @Syaniiti
      @Syaniiti 5 месяцев назад +6

I personally found the amount of vestiges so low on ng that I never bothered going ng+ and instead did 3 playthroughs of NG for the endings, especially since I remember the vestige item costing quite a bit and only being able to carry a few. And having to stop to farm to be able to make a new vestige at the next point just does not appeal to me.
Still overall quite a good game even on release (Only time I played it).

@@Lux_Ferox They were limited to 5 prior to 1.5 So you had to stop exploring and go buy more. They also aren't very cheap in the early game if I remember correctly and by midgame you no longer need them for anything anyway due to the game getting easier.
Checked the price, 1.2k per seed, that's 6k vigor to farm when you wanted to get the seeds, and early game that's not much fun. (again, late game you don't need them anyway). Sure you can kill tthe Red Reaper for the first time and get 5 and have enough left over for 2 more.

while the paths lead back to the hub, having to run through all the shit for half an hour just to get there is pretty shitty and I'm happy the devs didn't go that way for NG and also added a no-vestige-decay modifier
because let's be real, this doesn't make the game hard but actually insanely tedious since you have to run around so much without fast travel

LOTF is one of the best non From Soft souls-like to come out in recent years and I don't care what people say about it. This is also coming from a person who started back in the Demon Souls, Dark Souls days before the sub genre even was a thing. I never understood the hate for this game, and for me personally it brought me back to the days of DS1.
The lore/setting is great, the visuals are amazing, the art direction is amazing, the armor sets look better then many in souls games, gameplay is slightly more in-depth then the average Souls game, parrying feels better then a Souls game, the weight of attacks feel and look great, some of the main bosses are very cool, its has its very own built in randomizer with modifiers, built in boss rush ...etc, I could go on and on.
I understand on launch the game had some performance issues (trust me I was there), but they eventually were smoothed out (at least for me) and outside of performance there is very little I have to complain about this game and at this point I have done 2.5 full run-throughs of the game, as well as tried a rogue-like run in the randomizer, which was some of the most fun I've had this year.
To me this game was underrated and overhated, and I'm super glad we may be getting a sequel in the future due to its success.

Totally agree with your comment, this is just like Dark souls 1. I never played demon souls, but I did play dark souls 1 on 2012, and a bit of dark souls 2 on 2014, but I remember in dark souls 2 harvesting was limited, and the world wasn’t as interconnected, so I gave up and never played souls games again cause I knew they’ve already changed. This game is like playing DS1 just bigger, and 14 years later. I thought I was never going to experience that feeling again.

This game is a lot better than it was at launch. I think it had issues but I noticed a lot of them were what I would call "Review speedrun" issues, which is a big thing with all the YTers trying to get their review out first. When a game is new, there are no guides, so the combination of people trying to rush the game and difficulty often results in complaints. This is why many games are very hand-holdy. But a souls-like game that has more obscure mechanics always gets a lot of flak. Even Elden Ring got a fair share of complaints, such as the whole Margit slow attack / difficulty complaint, which was a result of people immediately running to Stormveil castle. The critics were drowned out by the positivity surrounding Elden Ring, and that in itself is a review feature. If a game is clearly very popular, reviewers are much more likely to give issues a pass. You could theoretically get identical games, one from a popular developer and one from an unknown developer, and despite critics identifying exactly the same issue, the one from the popular developer will still get 9/10 despite issues, and an identical game with the same issues from an unknown developer will get 6/10.
None of this is to say Lords of the Fallen didn't have issues, I just think many of the reviewer criticisms were the game wasn't identical to a From Soft game and reviewers couldn't rush to the end. Remember that Dark Souls got mixed reviews at first. It wasn't until popular opinion shifted after a year or two that it suddenly became the best thing ever, despite a lot of genuine flaws.

@@bp4861 well jokes on you, I didn't bought it day one. I saw the reviews and decided to not play it. The game just occasionally pops up on my steam feed and I just keep myself up to date with the updates and got it during sale after few patches. Did I contribute to the issue? I did my job as a consumer and made the right decision to wait and see. If you're having an issue with this industry malpractice then "Vote with your wallet" and stop just blaming others or try to make a difference by any other means other than just complaining.
Also regarding lawsuits, what about the entertainment(episodic shows and movie) industry? Are there any lawsuits that happened because the movie/series sucked? Just be aware of what you're buying and not pre-order.

I think one of the biggest issues LotF had at launch was everyone wanted another Elden Ring. Its part of the genre, any game that calls itself "Soul's Like" is of course going to be compared to DS and ER. But LotF on its own I always felt held up.
Most bosses were really fun and had interesting mechanics, and I also liked how youd run into boss characters that were just suped up versions of an upcoming areas enemies.
Weapons felt fun and while not inspired, they still got the job done.

Biggest shame for me here is that while the game looks absolutely incredible, the HUD and some of those text bubble elements that pop up are some of the ugliest I've ever seen. You don't HAVE to copy FromSoft at literally every step, you can make a clean HUD that looks like something from this century, and not just follow something FS have decided to stick with for most of their games. And at least their art style suits that retro HUD thing - when you put it on top of hyper realistic graphics like in this game it's pretty much disgusting.

Think the issue was it came out around the same time as Lies of P, which overshadowed it since LoP was probably the first souslike that felt fromsoft quality.
Since then I know Lords of the Fallen has had a lot of updates, but I don't know how many fixed the core issues of the game which were the floaty combat, enemy placement, and the dual worlds mechanic was was really cool on paper but implemented poorly. I didn't finish Lords of the Fallen but back then I considered it to be about a 5-6/10, not bad just mediocre. I might go back to it once i finish wukong, space marines and astro bot, there's no harm in giving it another chance.

They did fix the critical issues that made the game nuisance to play. Now it's in decent shape, as long as you don't mind some convoluted levels to navigate through.
Improved performance and cut down on stuttering, especially on consoles.
Lowered enemy density, when it launched it had enemy density fit for a game that is just full co-op and it was a mess. You can still bring it back with game start option, if you want.
Since most weapons have forward momentum in their movesets, they made it so that you cannot fall into ravines during a weapon attack. Which was a heaven-sent change.
Co-op is now more reliable, it was utter trash before.
Bad things: I don't think PVP is fun, with lots of powerful and fast spells. Bosses are still kind of soft-skinned in latter half of the game and some of them just aren't fun/good overall (except the new secret boss they added). Also not a fan of that one quest where you have to summon one NPC to seven different boss fights, and some bosses start spazzing out and are just a nuisance to fight with a summon. Umbral mechanic is used a lot, yet there are very few proper puzzles or interactions there. It's mostly just go in, go back out. Lock-on system can still go haywire, even though it is less sensitive now, at the worst possible time. Certain spells, like Orius' Judgement (homing, overhead, multihitting lightning strikes) and Lucent Beam (instantly activating high damage beam), can still trivialize lot of the content.

I have been thinking a lot about this game lately and I believe the two main reason why many people hated on it were due to the timeline of its release:
    1. After Elden Ring got released, many new players joined the ranks of Souls Enjoyers, so they expected Lords of the Fallen to be just like Elden Ring. When they encountered ambushes with many enemies, they weren't ready to accept the challenge because it felt too different from the Elden Ring formula. Yes Elden Ring had ambushes too, but they were often easier
    2. Optimisation for the PS5-level hardware was received poorly in 2023, because back then many people still had PS4 consoles or PS4-level PC hardware; So many GTX 1660 past-gen enjoyers complained about the performance

It's a boring, shitty game, with far too few enemy types, fairly unbalanced combat, terrible and boring areas, a frustrating "otherworld" system that should have been cool but isn't, every weapon in the class having the EXACT SAME MOVESET, and the story and setting being so generic edgelord grim fantasy that it would be a groan even prior to the FLOOD of similar soulslikes we got in the meantime. I pre-ordered this game and waited for months to play it. I, along with countless others were so disappointed it was heartbreaking. I understand it was their first go at souls like gaming, but come on! They lost so many players due to their refusal to bring in people who knew how to fix the countless issues they were having. This game should have been a massive hit but unfortunately the devs allowed this masterpiece to fall by the wayside. Hopefully they release lords of the fallen 2 with the knowledge they gained in the utter disaster the release of this game was. I continued to play and was happy they kept trying to make the game playable. Unfortunately, it came too late as 75-80% of players had already left at that point and I myself left around 2 months after release. This could have been amazing, their next attempt providing they've ironed out the major issues they had will get the respect and acclaim lords 2023 should have received.

I felt that way too for awhile, and maybe it's been changed since 1.5 as I only got the game a couple weeks ago. I was even frustrated with the feel of the gameplay at first, it didn't feel like a From game, despite looking so much like a Dark Souls game. But then, something clicked, and the gameplay felt much better. Rather than comparing I began to appreciate it for what it does, ESPECIALLY the parry system, which feels so good.
I think the speed of the movement was what threw me off most to start, but now after having gotten used to the mechanics I think they're well done and I am glad it feels so different from From's games.

My biggest issue with this game is it never let me feel powerful. No matter how much i upgraded how big my weapon was what slots i filled armor and charms i got the enemy scaling was always higher than my character.
Maybe that changes if i beat it and min max but on first playthrough moment to moment i felt weak as hell the entire time.
Meanwhile in elden ring there were many areas either i was overleveled for or due to how i built ny character there are many moments i felt like a beast even in the surge and other similar games.

    • @lynackhilou4865
      @lynackhilou4865 5 месяцев назад +1

I get what you're saying and i agree with the sentiment, but i disagree that the issue is the lack of power fantasy , i think the real issue is the lack of progression you feel while playing . Since basically you fight the same enemies but just scaled up , leveling up is very incremental and it feels like you've hit a hard cap from level 1 ( for example levelling up health doesn't feel impactful or like it's making you survive better ) , so you never feel that satisfaction of progressing and getting better , the only progress you get is the knowledge on how to best deal with enemy spam .
So yeah feeling powerful is related to this sense of progress , but the game neither makes you powerful nor acknowledges your journey

Each class has predefined abilities it can use and once you beat the game you can new game plus to pick another class to add onto your existing class... Making it possible to buff up DMG and then go invisible with a massive weapon and one shot most enemies...you new game plus 2 and now your a walking nuke that can't die....the issue is around 70% of the game you can get a two handed sword that dwarfs every other weapon in the game...think Sword of Aeons from fable base game and not DLC...it has double the DMG of anything and it scale with multiple stats.

Prob gonna give this another shake soon. Got turned off hard after three hard locks. The patches also made some bosses I hated even worse.

I'm not a super fan of the combat animations, but the magic casting in this game is LEAGUES above the souls games, they really need to take a note from this game's book and actually start working on a quick casting system.

I just started, but bought gsme at launch, due to bad critics i waited with playing. I enjoy the atmosphere, its pleasantly dark in nature.

The boss attack animations are floaty and horrendous, completely killed the game for me

Is the game perfect? No. Are any of the souls or souls likes I've played perfect? Hell no. Game is so underrated. Lot of fun.

I liked it but I played the patched version not so long ago. I really liked the level design and artstyle, but there was not enough enemy variety and bosses were mid. Still, it's a solid 7/10 imho.
