I wish multitool companies would sell the base platform and then the tools separately so we can choose what we want and don't want. There are always a few tools that I don't want or use, and several that would not be ideal in situations like outdoors survival or firearm maintenance. SOG is especially bad about this, which is unfortunate because I prefer their force multiplication feature and the smooth opening that comes with it.

I've had Leatherman tools, Gerber multi tool, SOG. SOG is my least favorite due to complicated locking mechanism. Gerber pliers are best for nuts and bolts, but the original Leatherman is my all time favorite. I lost mine after 15+ years of use. Found it underneath the plywood floors of my hunting boat 5+ years later after sitting in gunk, salt water, debris, the file was fairly rusted. On opening my old friend, the frame lock spring snapped. I found the original box and lifetime warranty. Wrote them a note offering to purchase a new one. Two weeks later a new one arrived with a nice handwritten letter. Amazing company. Cheers
corkscrew is also great for tying hard to get knots. I carry the huntsman on me everyday, it has a corkscrew and I have outfitted it with the tortoise gear stuff, also if you but some heat shrink tube around that fire tinder in the cork from tortoise gear, it will preserve it and keep it from becoming worn out and hairy.
l must like the content of the channel as I, despite being a foreigner and have some difficulty with your accent, I keep comming back to listen and watch! I have a SOG which I keep in my "edc bag"... used it a few times...but never in the woods! I like the fine points they are good enough to extract splinters or thorns... But in the end I am not the greatesf fan of multi tools. Stay safe!

I saw in a documentary that you can have a Swiss army knife custom made by them using an online app, but I'd imagine it's very expensive. I have a multi tool which I haven't field tested yet, but I sure as hell ain't gonna baton with it now, so as usual I have learned something from you 😎

Appreciate the good honest review, Rob. Multitools to me are something that is better than nothing. I buy them for pliers which could squeeze and cut, small saw that could notch and scrape, and ok scissors. Rest of the tools I get, I consider them purely a bonus. I could do without but having it makes life easier.
Fun video. I love my Leatherman rebar, but I have to remember the mantra. Folders aren't beaters. Sorry for your loss. I see them more like precision watches. Too many fiddly bits to snap or jam. I don't even like to twist my folders lol. Thanks for keeping the fail scene in the video. Good to know I'm not the only one who breaks their toys lol. TBH after seeing that I'm kinda glad I kept my Surge. I also had a SOG Japanese made Powerplier that I used for decades, as well as a Swisstool I still use. If a multi tool won't handle tap splitting soft pine fat wood 1 inch in diameter its a no go for me. I don't EXPECT a multi tool to split anything more than that, I don't even chance it😂
I was very disappointed, I had a replacement and swapped it for a Signal, that's put to the test in my next video, making a basic rocket stove in the woods.
I'll have to check that one out. I've been a "Wave" user for years; this might tickle me enough to give it a go. Forty minute video..... Hmmm, I have a feeling there's a laugh or two coming our way. That was a fair test imo. Hopefully they can refine the design in the future because the one hand pliers open is a great feature for those of us who spend time on ladders.
Hi Rob😲 bad luck on the leatherman, but I also agree you weren't going to town whith the battening, I'll stick to my old Blast model, still going strong after years of use, I thought the Swedish fire worked very well. After the wire snapped I think I'd better test the piece I carry,lol, and finally the Bowie knife was beautiful, full on show and go, that's what I call a knife. I have charge TTi for about 15 years now. Has S30V blade, everything works perfectly. I am not using it very frequently, but it saved me from a difficult situation couple of times when I got locked in a warehouse, and the door did not have a handle to open the door :) I am yet to encounter a situation at home or in office that I can not deal with Charge TTi :)
I got the Gerber made Bear Grylls multi tool (kids b/day present one year) apart from the plastic/rubber belt loop part of holder that held the ferro rod and tiny torch falling a part it's been good finds its feels better than my leatherman blast. Things about 3 or 4 years old and even the torch still works. like the I know some of will say then snap well that wasnt good I BROKE IT.
I have a few multi-tools and quite agree with you - sometimes they feel like a solution to a problem that you are unlikely to encounter - but it's better to have the option for those one-in-a-million situations. A reasonable test for the tool I thought and it is a pity that it couldn't handle a light tap with a small stick!
Thanks Rob, I hate leathermans , broke mine cutting a barbed wire fence. They are not nice to hold and like you said a bit wobbly, I would rather carry 2 or 3 tools than one multi tool that aint that great, thankyou for your honest and very enjoyable videos
Ha, you sent me off watching ALONE right from the beginning with Joe Robinet losing his Firesteel within 2-3 days. I find Leatherman too heavy for my personal EDC liking, but I only have the one. It sits in the Toolbox on the ATV.
My Leatherman broke with normal use. Since then, I got a Spirit X, which has seen tons of use and abuse, however still looks, feels and works like day one!! The difference in quality and the amount of utility I get from the Spirit X, is night and day in my opinion. Never looked back to Leatherman again. Used to be a decent company, well not anymore..For outdoors use, I would recommend the Swiss Tool X that you mentioned. you won't get the Perfection you get with the Spirit X, but it has more substantial tools on it. That being said, I would check in a shop before getting them, because Spirit X. is way to good to not have one!! (Best multitool by far)

Good review and good test! Absolutely should have been able to take that! I dont think a surge, charge, deisle or any other of the older leatherman designs would do that.
@@RobEvansWoodsman try the leathernan Surge, it has a decent awl, scissors the saw blades are interchangeable with those T blades you find in the hardware store. You can carry multiple blades I have a hacksaw blade fitted on mine that i cut down it works great. I modified a few of my the end of my serrated blade so i have a chisel end and my can opener so i have a curved blade. They all lock really well
@@RobEvansWoodsman true it is heavy. I have a kydex holster for it and wear a belt. I have my extra blades and file duck taped on it, so for me it doesn’t bother me. Guess I’m just used to it. My pocket carry choice would be the leatherman diesel
I have 2 Leathermans but prefer my Army issued Victorinox tool better. Just my opion. All of mine don't have scissors though, unfortunately so I still have to carry scissors so I carry a SAK as well. Before we were issued the Victoinox we just carried a good pair of pliers and the SAK.
And I thought I stood alone! Yes, I also used to carry both an SAK and a Leatherman Wave, back in the day when it was still legal. Like you, I found neither met all my needs but both together did. Is it just my perception or has Leatherman slipped a bit in the quality dept, while Victorinox has kept the highest possible standards? I once broke the pliers tip on my Leatherman, and sent it in from to have a gander at. It came back totally rehabbed! All worn tools replaced, new pliers, and shiny new. All it cost was the postage.
I'll take the Swiss army knife over the leatherman every day but saying that I carry both all the time , originall leatherman super tool and Swiss army huntsman, love your videos 🏴👍
I can't decide between them but I can tell you that my favourite Leatherman is the charge and SAK is the Trailmaster (the one I have with a serrated blade and black handle).

been a little confused on the diamond file which is clearly useful to sharpen a blade, but it does not seem that you could actually use it to sharpen the blade in the Leatherman.
many many years ago I had one of the original design Leatherman the one they now call the PST ie no locks and tools on the inside of the arms, unfortunately they had tried to combine the bottle opener and can opener into one tool I was,opening a bottle of German lager it had a very thick and rigid cap I strained and the tool snapped off, colour me pissed, later was talking to the young lad in local tool shop, don't have those anymore, he took one look at it and promised to send it back even though I hadn't purchased it there, got a new one how's that for customer service
Don't know if this is of any use to you, but there's a start up business called GOAT Tools in the USA. Looks quite good, don't know what the cost are, but from what I've seen they look really customizable, ( I think that's a word). Good info as usual 👍.🇬🇧

I don’t understand how on earth would you use that multitool in such a heavy duty work, such as batoning. From the very beginning when you were splitting the wood with the blade by twisting it I knew that something its not right…
Should be ok Rob. Don't Leatherman have a lifetime warranty? I am getting a SAK Outrider they have big sissors. I don't use pilers. They look like the best big SAK to me. I saw dave canterbury with one. And i like a corkscrew. Muli uses.

Add a fire cord lanyard, a fire fly and a screw in small screwdiver for glasses, i think its a good go bag option. Or back up hiking/bushcraft blade. That hardly qualified as batoning - it was gently, almost lovingly tapping.... your honour 😂 As you say, knowing the limitations of a tool is of benefit, destruction tests seem a shame but its good information. Pliers and wire in a survival or work situation are great - sooo many uses..... It intrigues me that the Alone contestants seem to really favour BIG knives - along with axes and saws. I'd much prefer a handy 4 to 5 inch knife and a saw, the axe always seems a bit superfluous and clumsy - trying to carve with a huge kukri or Bowie looks plain dangerous! And they randomly put things down and lose them - my gear has plenty of luminous gaffa tape wrapped on it for cuts, fires and locating....its not rocket science.: Am I a clumsy oaf? OH YES - im the worst! so I mitigate my own stupidity I even wrap luminous gaffa tape on my luminous gaffa tape, you can't be too careful.
Cracking comment mate, the three/four tools for Alone have always given me food for thought, I'd definitely take a muilti tool and a decent saw after that I'm stumped!

I was going to caveat that with "if there was plenty of dry wood" but you could always just saw to create Swedish fire logs or your famous 3 log fires which are efficient. Whilst I'm on....do you happen to know anyone selling a cold steel trailmaster in the cheaper steels?, is it 01 and A2? I can't afford the San Mai or 3V and it's going to be abused anyway.
@@RobEvansWoodsman I've gone for a Cold Steel OSI (4.7mm, flat grind), it'll do for what I need for now...I'll make - correction, I'll try to make - a Trail Master / Modern Bowie appreciation fan copy. I'm not the best at sturdy blades over 120mm (not enough patience grinding off that amount of stock I suspect) but needs must. I made my first RWL34 blade this month, nice metal, holds an edge much better than most other steels, but (as you'll know) it's a pricey old raw material.....as its a keeper for me I put desert ironwood scales on - so with the grinding belts etc it's cost about £65 and 10 hours of my time. I honestly don't know how professional knife makers make any money.....it must be witchcraft!
@@daemonharper3928 not a lot of money in knife making unless you charge silly money like Jacklore or Orford, I really need to put my prices up! Can't stand grinding big blades, take far too long, I've taken the meat off with an angle grinder in the past before grinding the bevel. Desert ironwood is lovely stuff. The way I look at it is ; I'll stick to what I do best, scandi bushcrafter knives and I'll buy big knives from factory companies.

I see people abusing Leathermans to the point of failure by doing stupid things that Victorinox tools can't handle either. I have never seen anyone disassemble a Victorinox multi-tool and customize it or modify it for personal use. I have never, ever watched anyone do anything that I would consider taxing or stressful to a Victorinox multi-tool. I am not sure why, but I have sound theories about this bias. Everyone in the comments section is always saying Victorinox is the best multi-tool hands down. Still waiting on a hard use video for the Spirit X. Victorinox tools are not as popular, nor are they as widely used as Leatherman and Gerber from my observations. You cannot take Victorinox apart without destroying the rivets that hold them together. Laughable. Felix Immler doesn't baton a locked Victorinox Ranger or SAK. For good reason. Mechanical limits of the tool. Get a Gerber Doubledown, or fixed blade to baton with. Your tools will thank you later. Nice video.

I think you should have done it the way Felix Emmler said to do it. Batton it at a 90% angle. It shouldn't cost you anything to get it replaced.

For me the old Wave is still my favourite (the one before they had interchangeable screwdriver bits).

Nearly bought a free P4 but went with the charge g10 after seeing an earlier vid of yours. Swisstool is great but quite heavy.

I like multitools but don't use mine in the woods but it's promising actually, wouldn't use a magnetic one because I'm convinced it will affect a compass
Good review and good test! Absolutely should have been able to take that! I dont think a surge, charge, deisle or any other of the older leatherman designs would do that.
Very disappointed with it.
@@RobEvansWoodsman try the leathernan Surge, it has a decent awl, scissors the saw blades are interchangeable with those T blades you find in the hardware store. You can carry multiple blades I have a hacksaw blade fitted on mine that i cut down it works great. I modified a few of my the end of my serrated blade so i have a chisel end and my can opener so i have a curved blade. They all lock really well

Prefer the charge.
@@RobEvansWoodsman true it is heavy. I have a kydex holster for it and wear a belt. I have my extra blades and file duck taped on it, so for me it doesn’t bother me. Guess I’m just used to it. My pocket carry choice would be the leatherman diesel
I have 2 Leathermans but prefer my Army issued Victorinox tool better. Just my opion. All of mine don't have scissors though, unfortunately so I still have to carry scissors so I carry a SAK as well. Before we were issued the Victoinox we just carried a good pair of pliers and the SAK.
Dose the same job and the pliers can take more abuse.
And I thought I stood alone! Yes, I also used to carry both an SAK and a Leatherman Wave, back in the day when it was still legal. Like you, I found neither met all my needs but both together did. Is it just my perception or has Leatherman slipped a bit in the quality dept, while Victorinox has kept the highest possible standards? I once broke the pliers tip on my Leatherman, and sent it in from to have a gander at. It came back totally rehabbed! All worn tools replaced, new pliers, and shiny new. All it cost was the postage.
Leatherman has amazing after sales service, I've used it several times.
I don't think Victorinox offer that kind of service.

I'll take the Swiss army knife over the leatherman every day but saying that I carry both all the time , originall leatherman super tool and Swiss army huntsman, love your videos 🏴👍
I can't decide between them but I can tell you that my favourite Leatherman is the charge and SAK is the Trailmaster (the one I have with a serrated blade and black handle).
@@RobEvansWoodsman I've got 3 but still prefer the original leatherman and I've had it 30years with no problems lol as a site carpenter and joiner it's used most days , it's very hard to beat the Swiss army knife at the price and quality

been a little confused on the diamond file which is clearly useful to sharpen a blade, but it does not seem that you could actually use it to sharpen the blade in the Leatherman.
You definitely can't sharpen the blade , it's more for touching up large saw teeth and gardening type tools.
many many years ago I had one of the original design Leatherman the one they now call the PST ie no locks and tools on the inside of the arms, unfortunately they had tried to combine the bottle opener and can opener into one tool I was,opening a bottle of German lager it had a very thick and rigid cap I strained and the tool snapped off, colour me pissed, later was talking to the young lad in local tool shop, don't have those anymore, he took one look at it and promised to send it back even though I hadn't purchased it there, got a new one how's that for customer service

Don't know if this is of any use to you, but there's a start up business called GOAT Tools in the USA. Looks quite good, don't know what the cost are, but from what I've seen they look really customizable, ( I think that's a word). Good info as usual 👍.🇬🇧
I checked it out, the main blade had a noticeable weak spot as the thumb hole is huge, great idea tho.

Thanks for this video I just got into the multi tool game and I just bought the Leatherman P4 and the surge if they are going to do all of that which is break so easily for the price they cost it's ridiculous. I might as well get 3 Daicamping models for the price of one Leatherman... what do you think.
I think that the Surge, wave and charge are excellent tools, the free P4 was very disappointing.

I don’t understand how on earth would you use that multitool in such a heavy duty work, such as batoning. From the very beginning when you were splitting the wood with the blade by twisting it I knew that something its not right…
I found it's limitations.
Should be ok Rob. Don't Leatherman have a lifetime warranty? I am getting a SAK Outrider they have big sissors. I don't use pilers. They look like the best big SAK to me. I saw dave canterbury with one. And i like a corkscrew. Muli uses.

@@RobEvansWoodsman thanks, i was inspired by your SAK videos. Its hard to find a model with all the tools you want. But i came across daves video and i checked it out and liked it. Add a fire cord lanyard, a fire fly and a screw in small screwdiver for glasses, i think its a good go bag option. Or back up hiking/bushcraft blade. As you say, knowing the limitations of a tool is of benefit, destruction tests seem a shame but its good information.
Pliers and wire in a survival or work situation are great - sooo many uses.....
It intrigues me that the Alone contestants seem to really favour BIG knives - along with axes and saws. I'd much prefer a handy 4 to 5 inch knife and a saw, the axe always seems a bit superfluous and clumsy - trying to carve with a huge kukri or Bowie looks plain dangerous!
And they randomly put things down and lose them - my gear has plenty of luminous gaffa tape wrapped on it for cuts, fires and locating....its not rocket science.:

Cracking comment mate, the three/four tools for Alone have always given me food for thought, I'd definitely take a muilti tool and a decent saw after that I'm stumped!
@@RobEvansWoodsman the guy who took the multi tool - if memory serves he was the really neat and organised guy wasn't he? Multi tool and saw.....not a bad choice. I was going to caveat that with "if there was plenty of dry wood" but you could always just saw to create Swedish fire logs or your famous 3 log fires which are efficient.
Whilst I'm on....do you happen to know anyone selling a cold steel trailmaster in the cheaper steels?, is it 01 and A2? I can't afford the San Mai or 3V and it's going to be abused anyway.
Sorry mate but I don't know of one going for sale, have you seen the Chinese knock off trailmaster? Really cheap if you just want something to abuse.
@@RobEvansWoodsman I've gone for a Cold Steel OSI (4.7mm, flat grind), it'll do for what I need for now...I'll make - correction, I'll try to make - a Trail Master / Modern Bowie appreciation fan copy. I'm not the best at sturdy blades over 120mm (not enough patience grinding off that amount of stock I suspect) but needs must.
I made my first RWL34 blade this month, nice metal, holds an edge much better than most other steels, but (as you'll know) it's a pricey old raw material.....as its a keeper for me I put desert ironwood scales on - so with the grinding belts etc it's cost about £65 and 10 hours of my time. I honestly don't know how professional knife makers make any money.....it must be witchcraft!

Can't stand grinding big blades, take far too long, I've taken the meat off with an angle grinder in the past before grinding the bevel.
Desert ironwood is lovely stuff.
The way I look at it is ; I'll stick to what I do best, scandi bushcrafter knives and I'll buy big knives from factory companies.

I see people abusing Leathermans to the point of failure by doing stupid things that Victorinox tools can't handle either. I have never seen anyone disassemble a Victorinox multi-tool and customize it or modify it for personal use. I have never, ever watched anyone do anything that I would consider taxing or stressful to a Victorinox multi-tool. I am not sure why, but I have sound theories about this bias. Everyone in the comments section is always saying Victorinox is the best multi-tool hands down. Still waiting on a hard use video for the Spirit X. Victorinox tools are not as popular, nor are they as widely used as Leatherman and Gerber from my observations. You cannot take Victorinox apart without destroying the rivets that hold them together. Laughable.
Felix Immler doesn't baton a locked Victorinox Ranger or SAK. For good reason. Mechanical limits of the tool. Get a Gerber Doubledown, or fixed blade to baton with. Your tools will thank you later. Nice video.
I tested the Victorinox swisstool X last weekend, I didn't abuse it.
