A pack of cigarettes, a video game, a pick-up truck and a stately colonial home all become key elements in four terrifying tales of terror in the anthology film, Nightmares, directed by Joseph Sargent (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, White Lightning).
A chain-smoking homemaker (Cristina Raines, The Sentinel) insists on going out for cigarettes even when an escaped madman is on the loose in "Terror in Topanga."
J.J. Cooney (Emilio Estevez, Young Guns), a video game hot-shot, dares to take on a strange challenger - though it may cost him his life - in "The Bishop of Battle."
A troubled priest (Lance Henriksen, Aliens) seeks to find the faith he has lost on the road, but instead he finds someone (or something) in this desert is trying to drive him out of his mind in "The Benediction."
Claire (Veronica Cartwright, Alien) hears rats in the walls. Her husband (Richard Masur, The Thing) believes he can take care of the problem with a few rat traps, but this problem is only going to get much bigger in "Night of the Rat."

"I am the Bishop of Battle. I have thirteen progressively harder levels. Try me if you dare. Let's begin." That gave me the creeps as a kid and still does. Awesome movie

A lost 80's classic that deserves more recognition than it gets.
I was lucky to see this movie in a when it was released on the big screen.
I'm glad it is finally available for sale on Blu Ray after being OOP for years.

He shot worse than Cobra and Imperial Stormtroopers combined.

I saw this at a the Skyline Drive-in theater near my hometown of Madison, Indiana as part of a double feature with "Psycho II!" I thought that "Nightmares" was a pretty good horror anthology, and this was my favorite of the four episodes! It was a great fit for the video arcade era, and actually ahead of its time both in special effects and in message, as video game addiction is an even bigger problem now, and the way the game comes to life is reminiscent of virtual reality. Thanks for sharing a clip of this underrated classic!

If the film-makers had given it much thought, this story alone could easily have been made into an entire movie unto itself, and it would have been a killer. I wonder if the ending would have been the same, or if Zock would have had to learn the game himself to rescue JJ out of the Bishop's evil grasp.

Pity Emilio didn’t meet “Mad Max” Mayfield. Or Dustin, Will, Mike and Lucas. They’d have been valuable Allies against the Bishop of Battle. Shoot, even Eleven would’ve turned that entity to mush! I always hated seeing Emilio get beaten by the machine. He was the best. JJ Cooney and Max would’ve made great friends

how did I get here all the way from lemon demon's 2012 concert that used this movie as part of the music video that was played in the background of Cabinet Man. The only reason I was able to find the source of this movie was by recognizing Emilio Estévez and finding what other things he had done outside of Breakfast Club. I was not disappointed when I found this.

This. Entire movie I think is multiple different story movies put together in one film and I like the one about the console video game machine I think I guess it was called the bishop of battle and in my idea as an analogy it reminded me as like simaler concept as like the entire movie that came out in the early nineteen eighties decade that was called Tron the movie Tron that's it interesting

Ya I just shared this video with my comment on the Angry Video Game Nerd video on Polybius. I wouldn't put it past the CIA to make such a game. Such a free flowing game that makes you sucked in and transfixed on the shapes, then (if pixel rate was able too at that time) put the alien symbols found on UFO's into the graphics. Then they tried to studied the effects, but the experiment went wrong and the cabinets were removed... or were they: ruclips.net/video/x4hktqhBpzY/видео.html
