Great shots as ever Phil. Thank you so much for sharing once again. I found the blue grosbeak and herons just so fascinating but the ospreys were absolutely stunning. They're so majestic in flight and you've expertly captured that majesty in these shots. The sharpness and clarity showing their beautiful markings and colours in all their glory and the pure eye focusing is testament to your brilliant skills Phil. Keep 'em coming!👍
Thank you! I went to the same location today with the same gear and I did not have as much luck. I went to a 7:45am doctors appointment so I arrived a little later and the light wasn't as good.
@@PhilThach Never mind, can't win 'em all Phil. I love your work anyway and I'll continue to look out for the next ones. Hope the health is improving 👍
Beautiful photos. It is funny you mention the eyes being closed. I look for those and seeing hummingbirds with closed eyes and their little lashes are my favorites. I show those a lot. Thanks for sharing that area too.❤
Phil, you’re killing me! I’ve recently been wondering if I should change from Canon to Nikon. This is the setup I would choose. Today I shoot with the R5 and the RF 100-500. I love the weight and versatility of this lens, and the ability to get macro type shots too. Weight is a big consideration for me. I’d have to sell my existing gear to make the change to Nikon. I’m trying hard to wait and see the R7 ii before considering the jump. A limited budget means no R5ii for me right now. I’d love to see a matchup of this combo against the R5 and 100-500 combo. Great shots in this video! Love the heron with the crawfish! Nice!
Thank you! I'm hoping for a stacked sensor in a R7 Mark II to go with my 100-500 too! That would be an awesome and light weight setup for sure! Right now I'm not in the market for any cameras but If Canon, Sony or Nikon makes a stacked sensor APSC camera with great autofocus and virtually zero rolling shutter issues in electronic shutter mode. I'm in!
I was just able to pickup a new/used Z8 for a great deal so I will be trying it out with this lens next. Great shots, it seems to be hitting above its weight class. You said before you liked this lens better than the RF 200-800? Compared to the new R5 II, the Z8 for 3K used is a much better deal. I can definitely agree on best wildlife camera comment! That first shot with the bird beyond the brush is fabulous, I really dig that!
@@davetv8171 thank you! Yes I like this lens much better than the 200-800. Canon should’ve made a lens like this and the Sony 200-600 instead of what they made with the 200-800.
Love that blue grosbeak! It's my current nemesis bird. I went numerous times to a known nesting site 2 hours from my home and kept missing it, while others would consistently see numerous individuals. To date I've only seen an immature brown-colored one, a few years ago, and never an adult male. Glad you're enjoying the Z8! I just got the R5 MKII and it's great with the 200-800. Too bad you gave up on Canon 😥The RAW pre-capture is awesome so far. Would be interesting if you rented the R5 MK2 and used the 200-800 and compared to the Z8. I think you'd find pretty identical results, except for the pre-capture. I seem to have better results with the 200-800 than you do, even at f/9. Going to miss the ospreys when they migrate out in a few weeks. My local nest failed this year after following it for three successful years...kind of sad. Fortunately there were other successful nests not too far from me, and I got some of my best fish catching pictures to date. That headshot of the osprey is incredible. I've never been that close to one!
@@hstein27 thank you! I am glad you are happy with your new camera. I did not give up on Canon. I have not sold any of my canon gear. I’ll be taking canon gear with me to Canada in September. The light weight and small size of the 100-500 led to that decision. It will be easier to carry on a plane. I don’t think I would use the pre-capture feature that much so it didn’t really factor in to my purchase decision. I am aware that some people love that feature. I still am not a huge fan of the 200-800. I do still own mine and will use it from time to time. For me the best feature of the 200-800 is it drives a lot of views to the channel. 🤷♂️
@@PhilThach Glad to hear you're keeping the Canon gear. A friend ordered the 200-800 late last year from a local dealer and just got it! Plenty of people out there still waiting and looking for more info, so no surprise it drives people to your channel.
Hi Phil. im looking to buy another body. campared to Canon r5 ii......you think it is a better prospect keeping in mind the new batteries you need for Canon R5 ii as well as grip to keep it from overheating?
@@stefanusrheeder4162 I bought the Z8 over the R5 Mark II without factoring in those things. I picked it because it has a substantially faster read out speed on the stacked sensor, I like the 180-600 better than the 200-800 and it is substantially cheaper.
Goodaye Phil , just a question if you don't mind and have the time. I am listening and hearing some high iso settings yet your images are top notch. I assume you are probably using the NEF format before any editing however is there a picture profile that is your go to for this sort of photography ? Nice work.
@@philsmeanderings7991 thank you! Yes, I shoot raw then I edit the raw files and Lightroom and then I run those raw files through Topaz DeNouse AI on its default settings. So, no profiles are used.
Great photos Phil! I am having a difficult time giving up my 500mm PF & D500 combo but it appears this combo is excellent and the lens is very reasonably priced. Do you think you will be wanting a prime (600 or 800) to go along with it? Your lens is really sharp.
@@garydubberly6608 thank you! I would love to pick up the Z 800 PF someday. I’m sure the Z 600 PF is great but it’s no better aperture wise than the 180-600 and, while I’m sure it is a tiny bit sharper, I’m happy with this lens’s sharpness. Maybe the light weight and small size will be necessary when I get a little older but not yet.
I thought the battery life on the Z8 would be terrible but I rarely need to go to my second battery that I always carry with me for any camera I use. I have been pleased.
Yes, just based on the auto focus being more consistent and I don’t have to switch to mechanical shutter for fast moving birds or sports like I have to do with the R7. However, when I go to Canada, I will not be taking the Nikon gear because it is bigger and heavier and harder to squeeze onto an airplane. I’ll be taking the Canon 100-500.
Well done Phil. You are also looking a lot better!!
