Looks like an awesome lens! I love the 500pf and it looks like they carried over well to Z mount! Its hard to believe how light and tiny the PF's are. Plus they offer incredible image quality.
It’s really great. The 180-600 is at its sharpest at F8 and this lens is at sharpest wide open at 6.3 and it is sharper wide open than the 180-600 is stopped down to F8. I found the 180-600 sharpness to be satisfactory so this one is extraordinary.
That is a male Rusty Blackbird, BTW. They’re pretty common in the bogs and wooded wetlands of the southeastern US. The identification clincher here vs. Brewer’s is the noticeably thinner bill, the more petite appearance, shorter tail, and the lack of an iridescent hue to the black body feathers. Also, as you noted, you can see the rusty feathers, which reflect its namesake. It is a wonderful capture.
Enjoyed following along on your photo walk. Laughed at the video towards the end...the same one where I was putting words with the Mergansers as they swam around, it's a classic.
I'm loving it so far. I enjoyed using the control ring on the Canon 100-500. It is out of the way and you must consciously reach for it to hit it. On this lens, you will accidentally hit it when reaching for something else.
Nice work on the vid & some very nice photos. Most people that do this professionally , run workshops, etc; are shooting manual iso & have the lens control ring programed for iso adjustment on the flyc( just twisting the ring while tracking looking thru the EV) being able to see the exposure live in the viewfinder, wether it be Nikon, Sony & I imagine Canon also. Hope this helps, give it a try. Happy shooting.
Hi Phil, on all my S Lenses the control ring is set to ISO. If I'm at F6.3 on the 600PF and the shutter speed is set to the situation eg flight, moving, static etc I can adjust exposure with the control ring.
Still using it. If it’s a time when I think I’ll always be at 600mm, I’ll take this new lens. If I feel like I need more flexibility in focal length, I’ll take the zoom.
Hi Karen! I have both lenses. I like the size and weight of the 600 PF. I like the versatility of the 180-600. The 180-600 has a better minimum focus distance. For example. From my blind, I can't use the 600 PF, it is too close and 600mm is too much. Both lenses are sharp but the 600 PF is a little bit sharper. I'm glad I have both lenses.
Didn't you have a Canon R7 and the 100-500mm? I didn't follow your channel closely but I seem to remember from a video 2 years ago that this was your camera.
@@PhilThach I initially wanted to go for that combo but then decided against it due to Canon's restrictive policy when it comes to third party manufacturers making lenses for the RF mount. Bought a Sony A7R III instead together with the Sony 200-600mm lens.
Good video Phil, I’ve been pondering this lens vs the 600 f4e for my z8. Everything I’ve read about the new 600pf is positive but to me it seems over priced for a 6.3 lens. Any thoughts about both 600’s?
Thank you! Maybe the 180-600 is underpriced. I bought my 600 pf when it was on sale lass moth for 800 off so that helped. According to testing by “Photography Life”, the PF is shaper in the corners at 6.3 than the 180-600 is in the center of the frame. As for the 600 f/4, I’m sure it’s amazing but its size, weight, and price are all prohibitive for me.
You know what I do? I’ll take a picture of the back screen and use my phone to tell me what bird it is. On iPhone just swipe up on a photo and it’ll tell you.
Nice Hooded Merganser shots! My favorite is the one at the 4:07 mark.
@@ses4vols thank you, Stephen!

@@PhilThachgood deal, it seems all the PF glass is sharpest wide open. I have a friend with the 800pf, and he loves it.
Love the Mergansers...a favorite duck for me along with the Wood and Harlequin ducks.
Those are my three favorites as well. 👍

Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always Phil 🤗🙏
Thank you!
Great job Phil - shots turned out great 👍

Looks like a really good lens. Bumping those control rings is a common problem. I turn mine off as well.

lol. If I had a nickel for every time I've done that with the control ring. Thanks for sharing. Hooded Mergansers were gorgeous. Cheers!
Thanks, Dave!
I smiled when you said your aperture kept changing. I knew exactly what it was. Been down the same road with mine 😂
It seems like it happens to everyone with that lens. I'm surprised I didn't figure it out sooner.
@PhilThach I did the same as you, turned it to do nothing. It annoyed me. I rented the 400mm f4.5 one time, same thing with that lens.

That makes sense. I think if I were to actually use it, I would put exposure compensation on it.
This time fav @10:28.
(I'm better now at controlling my camera envy.)
Thank you! I wish that one was a little bit sharper but I was still happy with it.
Nice Job...NO longer using the 180-600?

Hi Phil. Im curious do you also have the 180-600 lens and do you have a preference between the 600 PF. And the 180-600 lens? Karen

I hope to do some soon.

Yes, I still have that combo. I’m hoping for an R7 Mark II with a fast stacked sensor in 2025.

Yes, this is where I came up my guesses. The phone wasn’t sure either. It gave me choices.
@@PhilThach Ah. 😆
I've always used the image search part of the google app, I never knew you could do it right from the photos app now. Thanks! :)
