Knowing that CAS struggled financially all of his life, I can't help but see this as somewhat autobiographical. And the ending as a kind of wish-fulfillment of his lifelong desire to escape the mundane world into the world of art.
Job Vacancy: Museum Curator (Uncatalogued Relics.) The successful applicant will already have survived at least two major scandals involving a museum and ancient artifacts, (preferably Hyperborian or older,) and the subsequent disappearance of faculty members and of visitors under strange and mysterious circumstances. Whilst applicants for the position do not need to be insane; any preexisting mental disorders will be viewed in an entirely favorable light by the trustees.
My partner introduced me to CAS, Robert Howard, and Lovecraft a few years ago, and I can't believe I went my whole life without these wonderful stories. Clark is my absolute favorite by far though. Such a wordsmith!
I choose to believe that instead of abruptly lowering the tone of a gentle folktale-style story, the "other diversions" include kite-flying, model boat racing, birdwatching and ping pong.
I want to thank you very much for this Chinese fairytale! I enjoyed it! Now I'm going to take a little break, make some popcorn, and engross myself in the new FantasyBabble presentation! You are appreciated!
Fell in love with this story when you first did it, you can tell cas was a poet first and foremost. This might be more at home on your fantasy channel though?
“ In his last years the Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred dwelt in Damascus, where the Necronomicon (Al Azif) was written” . According to fiction, maybe they’ve had Too much interaction with nameless horror .🤔

Clark Ashton Smith and HorrorBabble are an unbeatable combination! What a wonderful tale.

Is this an attempt to be clever?

@@Martial-Mat Not to me.. but carry on being amused

Many thanks as always Ian😊
Unexpectedly wholesome, very charming
Wow! Though I had read every CAS story, but I guess I missed this one.
Well well, a happy ending. I wasn't expecting that lol. A great story though I must say.
CAS was stupendous! What a storyteller!❤

Clark A Smith never fails to deliver! My favorite duo, HB & CAS 😌🩷
Excellent story and narration. Well done. Thank you, Mr Gordon and Horror Babble. Until next time.
Talk about the ultimate getaway!
God bless you and your work and team for the 5th time 😇😇😇
That was delightful. Thank you.
Lovely.
That was sweet. I'm not sure that I would do as he did, given the choice!
Wow! What a story!
🥰🥰🥰

At some point I'll have to trawl through the channel to see what can be moved across.

I'd recommend putting a link to it in the bio, took me a minute to actually find it and I had no idea there was a second channel.
😻😻😻
"Other diversions" okay, I'm the completely wrong type of person to interpret that line. You need someone wholesome on that.
Ironic how this tale published in 1931 compares to the contemporary parasocial Chinese gamer fandoms.
Interesting...
More like horror bab-awww
If people in Syria and Iran had Horrorbabble, we would have seen peace in the middle east long ago.
