As usual, you release another banger of a video. All sound advice. As the 3DS is my favorite console and I have a good amount of experience collecting for it, (225 games and 9 consoles across all regions; this isn’t to brag but I just want to emphasize that I have learned things over there years) there are a few things I’d like to add to anyone looking to expand or start their collection. 1. Japanese Games: If you’re not afraid to import a Japanese 3DS or to add custom firmware to your existing 3DS there are some Japanese games I’d like to recommend, as some games either have English natively, on the cart, have high quality fan translations (Homebrew needed) or games that don’t need English. - Native English games: Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright Trilogy & Ace Attorney 4 Apollo Justice - The Ace Attorney trilogy just like the DS versions of the game in Japan have English on the cart. This also got a switch port a few years ago that has English, but just like the Switch version the 3DS version is Japanese exclusive. The 3DS version is a great way to play the original trilogy and typically it’s cheaper than the Switch version. However, AA4 has no Switch version as of the date of this comment (1/12/2023). I know not everyone is a fan, but I still think it’s a quality title. Resident Evil Revelations: This was released on other consoles and the 3DS is probably the worst way to play this game but it’s cheap and does have English Shovel Knight: Again, this was released on every other console known to man but does have English and Free DLC as well. Pokémon: All the main line Pokémon games starting with X&Y have multiple languages on the cart. The 3DS games are still price at MSRP or lower but as Emily mentioned in her video, these most likely will go up in price someday, but the Japanese versions of games always tend to trend much lower Kokuga: It’s a ground-based shooter made by Iuchi Hiroshi, of Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga fame. Has a western eshop release but all the menus are in English. -Games with Fan Translations: Games we never got in the west but have great fan translations are Dragon Quest Monster 1&2, Dragon QuesT Monsters Joker 3/3 Professional, Dragon Quest Slime Mori Mori 3 (AKA Rocket Slime), Digimon World: Re Digitize Decode, Great Ace Attorney 1&2 (Has switch port) EX Troopers, Puyo Puyo Chronicle -Games that don’t really need English to Enjoy: There are a few games I think you should consider getting that you don’t need English to enjoy, in no particular order; Theatrhythm Dragon Quest, Sayonara Umihara Kawase (also released on vita and US E-shop as Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, Box Boy! Hakozume Box (This a physical of the Box Boy games that are on the E-shop in America. The full package with the amiibo is incredibly expensive but the game by itself without the amiibo is reasonably priced.), Karous The Beast of Re:Eden (great shooter but a bit pricey around 7,000 Yen) Plus any Nintendo published platformer, are all cheap and need no English to enjoy (your Mario’s your Kirby’s etc) 2. European Games - If you add CFW to your 3DS or import PAL 3DS there are some games I think you should grab because their American counterparts are incredibly expensive. Yokai Watch 2 Psychic Spectres, Yokai Watch Blasters(both) and Rhythm Thief are all much cheaper in PAL regions. As in these games are only double digits as opposed to their American counterparts which are priced in the triple digit range. I have these games spread between the UK, France, and Italy, and all of them play in English like most PAL region games. Also a few other games got released in PAL regions which we didn’t get that are worth getting, Dillion’s Rolling Western (American E-shop), Rhythm Paradise Megamix (American E-shop) and the Inazuma Eleven games. Great sports/RPG hybrids made by Level-5 3. In Game DLC - There are a few other games that weren’t mentioned that have in game DLC, often times free that you should get. All The Monster Hunter Games have tons of free DLC which include, missions, palicos, titles, items etc, the SMT games have some free in game DLC as well 4. Recommendations - There are a few games I’d like to recommend which weren’t mentioned in the video which I think you should consider picking up as they are relatively cheap and are very good for the platform they are on. In no particular order Ultimate NES Remix: I think this by far the best pick up and play game on the platform, lots of bite sized challenges across the various Nintendo released franchises on the NES. Can’t go wrong Pilotwings Resort: This game I think was unfairly criticized because it was a launch title. While I agree this was not the game you want showcase your new console with, it’s still a great title. Starfox 64: An Excellent port to go along with Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask. The game can be replayed multiple times trying to go through all the routes, and one route can be finished in under an hour. LBX: Little Battle Experience: A underrated action RPG made by Level 5. This was the only games we got in the West in the popular Danball Senki franchise. It’s all about battle and customizing robots. Very fun. Chibi Robo Zip Lash: This is probably a bit of a hot take, but I have no attachment to this franchise like many others do. So those who do, were very disappointed with this game. However, I think it’s a decent enough platformer and if you want the full package with the amiibo this might be one to consider, especially if you want to add to your amiibo collection in an inexpensive way. 5. Cart Only - While I would never do this because I hate loose cartridges, purchasing cart only listings of games is a great way to save money and space. Especially if you pick up a carrying case which amazon still has loads of. 6. IPS Screens - Do not I REPEAT DO NOT CHASE AFTER 3DS CONSOLES WITH IPS SCREENS INSTALLED. TN screens are fine, and your average person can’t tell the different anyway. As well as both have pros and cons. Only the New 3DS and New 3DS XL models have these. Anyone trying to sell you on another version that has one is lying to you. But they’re not worth it imo. Only one of my 3DS’ has an IPS screen, it’s top IPS screen. I didn’t even notice for the first few years anyway. Depending on your viewpoint, I’m either a very passionate 3DS fan, or a raving lunatic.😂😂😂 But as the 3DS will be Nintendo’s last dedicated handheld and the console that got me back into collecting, the 3DS has and will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s one collection that I never intend to part with. I hope I was able to provide additional help in your 3DS collecting journey. One final word; don’t let anyone ever bully you into saying your collection is lacking. Your collection is yours and you should enjoy it.
Thank you for this video. I just picked up a "New" 3DS XL about a week ago. I decided to go with titles that were eShop exclusives, 3D Classics and titles from the Virtual Console. While everyone is anticipating the rise in costs of the physical releases, my budget and time is just allowing me to get the "download only" games and will probably jump into physical collecting sometime later in the year. Great recommendations all around!!
The 3DS had a phenomenal run! Unfortunately, I ended up selling a lot of now rare games. Thankfully, I’ve learned my lesson and no longer sell my games. The rare games I own are Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, Radiant Historia, Dragon Quest 7 & 8. What I appreciate about your channel is that you’re actually knowledgeable when it comes to the games because you seem to actually play them. So many times, I watch collection videos filled with unopened and unplayed games. Video games and board games are my favorite forms of entertainment. This video was a nice trip down memory lane. Very enjoyable content!
Thank you!! I'll admit I haven't gotten to a number of these titles because they were picked up within the past couple of years but I'm hoping to get to them someday *cries in ridiculously large backlog*
I’m late in the game into collecting game’s recently and your videos have helped me understand more about how I should go about collecting games and your tips really are helpful!
Excellent video! Lots of really helpful tips for folks. It's unfortunate how difficult it's becoming to buy certain 3DS games nowadays, but I'm glad there are still options to get some of these games somewhat reasonably. I really tried to clean up on 3DS games I wanted over the past few years, and what I've found (like you said 🙂) is how much more widely available and cheaper the world edition copies are. If you don't mind the emblem and just want to play the game and get a physical copy, it's a great alternative to round out your 3DS Collection. Keep up the great work, Emily!
Thank you so much Rusty! I haven't gone for the World editions really (the Bravely Default & Kid Icarus Uprising ones were an accident lol) but I think I may try to close off my collection getting the last few Mario RPG titles with that route. Before I was hesitant to buy them knowing how unliked they were in the collecting community but recently I've become more open to them for the reason we both mentioned haha.
These videos consistently are just some of the easiest listens. It's always on in the background while running errands or while at work. Keep up the wonderful presentation and well thought out content!
This is fantastic buying guide to start off any 3ds collection! I agree DLC is very important just for the fact of the 3ds eshop closes in march. I have noticed some Jrpg games are rising in price. I hope that decrease in the future. I own the first project Xzone I really need to try and find 2nd one. I thank you for helping your content is very informative and great!
Nice! I'm really curious if that rumored remaster will be coming out for the Switch at some point. It'll be nice to see more from that franchise in the future!
I think as always it's worth it to mention that at this point, the entire 3DS library is archived online via the Internet Archive, or various video game preservation sites. Depends on your morality of the situation, but nobody needs to have any FOMO whenever it comes to exclusive DLC or anything of the sort. It's all online, and that can never be taken away from us.
We know. Every channel that has anything to do with gaming always has someone make those same comments about emulation, you are NOT enlightening anyone. This is a collecting channel. Everyone knows about emulation trust me, you are not some elder with secret knowledge. You must be sooo cool in real life.
@sporadic eel Hope you weren't affected by the weird, rudely aggressive first reply. You probably don't need to be told there's nothing wrong with your comment, but there's nothing wrong with your comment. 👍🏻
@@DaveOfTheDaiqurisI know you dont need me to tell you but, there is something wrong with YOUR comment. Its cringe, and quite honestly a little creepy. Do you always try to defend other mens' honor like that or only in RUclips comments?
This is an awesome video! I started my collection very late😅. I agree on the pricing, I would recommend to put a pricing limit as well. Many people say “I will not spend 3 figures on a game” and stick to it, unless you really want that game or you’re a fan of the franchise. I started my collection looking for rare games which may not be available later, that limited my collection, but let’s say Mario games are fairly easy to get, so that’s why I don’t usually buy on those ones, yet definitely want them at some point because they’re fun! The remake thing usually helps to get better deals. But something is telling it won’t be applying that way anymore 😅 collecting has changed a lot, it’s rocketed the last two years. I was about to mention the rumors of kid Icarus port but you said towards the end. I still think it would be worthy to play on its original system due to 3ds unique capabilities. I realized I follow most of these tips unconsciously! But they’re really good and definitely should have them in mind. I would also say have a goal, it will tell you when to stop, because at some point you have to (regarding a system, of course), I’ve been thinking about it lately, and I’ve come to the conclusion, I can’t have all the games I want, so I decided my collection should have only the games I would like to play, rather than looking rare games for the fact they are rare. I still have problems like I wanna get the DQ7 😅 but way less problems xD. Sometimes I watch a megaman RUclipsr. And he’s also a collector. He says all collectors have some stupidity inside, otherwise you wouldn’t be collecting things (he’s very passionate about collecting games or megaman related stuff). So that’s why I think setting a goal will help you to control it! 😂
The problem I've found with goal setting is that it can be too easy to push them outwards after reaching a certain point. Especially if you start off by being too rigid 😅 So for example, I when first made a list of 3DS games I really wanted to own I thought I would be satisfied after obtaining all of those. But then I stared getting recommendations from people and doing a little more research on lesser known titles thinking they sounded cool, etc., and I found myself pushing back my goalposts 😅 This may be a more me problem though, so one way I've tried to stop this is to make a short but flexible list and also diversify in my hobbies so I don't get too caught up on one system or thing 😅
Appreciate the video, I love how you've organized everything. I found out fairly late that the eShop was closing (hadn't played my handhelds in a long time) and started scrambling to get my hands on all the JRPGs I wanted (starting with Dragon Quest and a huge amount of the Atlus stuff). I think I'll end up passing on a bunch of games that I'm not massively interested in, even though they're probably great games. I just feel like I have enough of a backlog that I'll be good for the next...decade(?) of gaming on my 3ds. Feels bad to not pick up all the 'gems' but, it is what it is. On the hardware side, I would like to have a backup new 3DS. Might go down the import route. It's crazy for how many systems were sold, the prices are really high for reasonable condition used systems.
Definitely a ton of useful advice and game suggestions here Emily, these kind of videos are always appreciated especially since it feels like collectors are going to be panic buying within the next couple of months. I know there are still quite a few 3DS titles I still need to grab physically before it's too late such as Kirby Triple Deluxe, Ocarina 3D and Kid Icarus.
Thanks Cesar! If you're just missing the Nintendo IPs you are in luck if you don't mind the Selects or World versions. Those should be available for a bit longer at reasonable rates imo.
@@orbalology Recently bought a Worlds version for Planet Robobot and it looks and plays just fine. I hope to get more of them if it means saving some bucks here and there. 😅
@@ScorpioCesarcade Yup it's the same exact cart so you shouldn't have any issues with them! Those along with the select versions are great economical ways to build up the Nintendo IP catalog.
Amazing video, much thanks from a huge 3DS fan and physical collector 👍 The 3DS might well be my fave console of all time…my love and appreciation grows every day for the little 3DS 😍
@@orbalology From a recent subscriber to your channel, just wanna say your vids are amazing and keep up the great content Much love from a UK gaming aficionado/nerd! :)
One of my favorite videos from you so far. Very informative and loved hearing you talk about Radiant Historia, Devil Survivor Overclocked and Legend of Legacy. 👍👍 I worry the 3DS will be overshadowed in the future by the DS and Switch so I’m excited to watch videos like this and hope to see more like it. 🙏
Yay I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I feel like the 3DS has a lot of special games that will continue to be looked at fondly. Though you're right it is right in between two major consoles that not only sold well but have killer game catalogs too.
Great tips! I also recommend asking people on social media (Facebook surprisingly) if anyone has games they’d like to get rid of. You’d be surprised! I’ve had success getting some rare games and even entire consoles for free because the previous owners wanted to free up space. I love the switch but since the eshop is closing down I’d love to rebuild my 3DS collection!
Really good advice here. I can't believe how crazy the Professor Layton games went. I'm just thankful I was really only playing 3DS games for a few years so I picked up a lot of the games I wanted when they were in stores.
I was fortunate enough to get Kid Icarus Uprising when it came out. At the time I don't recall too many people talking about it and the franchise as a whole was new for me. I loved this game and the twist as you playthrough it was insane to me. I'm glad it's getting the recognition it rightfully deserved. Insane that it's since skyrocketed in price since then
Very nice and comprehensive video! The 3DS is such a great system to collect for, especially when you consider the relatively cheaper cost of the games upon release.
I've done some thinking (went through 5 stages of grief lol), and I personally can't justify spending $100+ on a physical copy of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright. Having said that since I've bought Dual Destinies/Spirit of Justice digitally I'll be going that route. I do hope you do a video on eshop exclusives before it shuts down 🙏
I'm not sure if I'll do a video on eshop exclusives - I feel like there's been a lot of great coverage on that already on YT. But I agree the $100+ price tag for certain games are not always worth it, especially when there are always other hobby wants and outside expenses to take into consideration.
I'm kinda glad I bought as much as I could last year, the prices are insane now. I even bought some recently because I realised there were a few games I still wanted. Even something I thought was common like Pokemon Alpha/Omega which I skipped is almost double the price in some cases. I bought Project X Zone for over over $100 just the other day. Games like Radiant Historia, FE Fates Revelations, Shin Megami Tensei IV I decided to buy digitally since these can sell for hundreds of dollars. I'm in a PAL region so they're not common.
3DS is the Ultimate and Last handheld specific console. In glad to have gotten one a month ago myself. Thankfully, Nintendo is keeping the online play active. I really appreciate your video and info on games for it. Thank you. You earned a Sub from me 😁
I pretty much filled my Orbalology bingo card with your jrpg collection, lol, kudos on the Project X Zone games! I love your collection and I started getting some gems like the Dragon Quest and SMT games in the last 2 years myself.
I prioritize games for my collection by 2 factors. 1) How much i want them and 2) How hard are they to get. If the game is cheap and easy to get it will be the lowest priority for me. I was hunting for physical copy of Shovel Knight for 3DS along with Zelda Majora's Mask cause they are very rare and expensive in my country (Poland) so i got they first as soon i found them in decent price. I think will get Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby before price's will get out of control.
These are great tips! I'm so glad they're releasing Theatrhythm for the Switch, my first thought when they announced the eShop closure was 'oh, I'm going to have to buy ALL the DLC,' so at least that's one less thing to worry about 😆
I love the visual novel games on the 2ds but decided to upgrade to the 3ds upon the release of shinobi. I bought 3 more games the following year: resident evil , spirit camera and metal gear solid but sadly it's where my 3ds collection ends. Hard to believe but for the last 10 years I shifted my main focus on going out, travelling, working over sea, training in gym/dojo etc . Whenever I browsed ebay or the thrift stores , all I can think about was vcd, laser disc and other old video formats. I also tried to go back to buy mangas that I missed out back in the days. When it comes to gaming, I spent time on retro consoles and games. As for handheld I usually brought the psp while travelling. Last month I started looking at my nintendo ds collection (there are around 40 of them with all the rare titles of castlevania, phoenix wright attourney, and the likes), and realized the lack of 3ds games, as if I never start getting into the genre. Typed in 3ds game collecting and your videos showed up so it's my first time listening to someone talking about 3ds games and already in love with your channel. You made my passion for 3ds games grow because I saw the passion and enthusiasm in your presentation. I can't wait to try them games. sadly, we're at the end circle of the handheld, eshop will close soons and every physical copy becomes pretty much collectibles. But hopefully there's something that I still can get my hand on. woah at least I don't have to fork out 200 CAD for metal gear solid: snake eater, lol. thanks for putting out your videos , I really enjoy watching them. I hope you have a nice day. Take care. I will ttyl. edit: watched the other video and found out you're from Quebec, Canada. Very cool. I am from Toronto :)
I ended up, back when the announcement first went out, just biting the bullet and spending the $300 for a 3ds with CFW preinstalled. They weren't really charging more than other 3ds (it was listed as one of those "games included" things, so watch out for those. Know what you are getting), and it was, while a bit much, exactly what i needed. Yeah, i want to own the items properly. I already have a large rom library on my PC I can play. The physical collection I've started building is about owning the games, but it's nice to know with the eshop closing I can still pop in a rom if I so choose and play it on original hardware. Especially with the 3ds, which doesn't always translate to emulation as nice as other systems. I feel like, outside things like Smash 4's DLC and Fire Emblem Fates, which I did rush to purchase, I can enjoy collecting at my leisure.
Wonderful video especially for someone trying to build a a fair collection now in 2023. My advice as well is trying to bid on auctions later at night if you’re a night owl like me, and sometimes people would forget to bid on the more expensive games and the auctions usually end up cheaper than usual.
Thanks Alie! I usually steer clear of auctions since they seem more trouble than they're worth oftentimes but it's definitely one way to snag some deals!
I purchased a beautiful copy of the Hyrule Edition a few years ago. I also got a Japanese grip for it which fits great, looks great, and really makes long play sessions more comfy. Will be getting five more games digitally before the end of the 3DS eshop next month. :)
Great advice and recommendations. Thanks to you I was able to build a nice collection of fun 3ds games throughout 2022. Currently playing Soul Hackers on there now and loving it.
Great video. Prioritizing by remake chances and by dual screens features is actually very smart, I do It myself. By the way, I haven't seen anyone talking about these tips elsewhere. Keep going with the good content
Thank you!! The remake angle is a bit of a gamble at times but it's one I've been waiting out before buying a couple titles in case we get a few announcements in the 11th hour 😅
@@orbalology It is totally a gamble😆, but It helps choosing which game buy first. What I've nerver thought about was choosing by publisher which is very clever too, because there is some companies known for making ports of their games.
Love my 3ds, because it was the system that got me into gaming. I used to stay up all night with my best friend and play fantasy life and just for the nostalgia I would love a switch port of that. Right now I try to complete my 3ds collection at least with the hard to get titles. I am missing a few Pokemon titles, but there are so much of them on the market, that I dont necessarily need to buy them before the Eshop closes. But I did get most Atlus games last year (Etrian Odyssey, Persona, Legend of legacy, Stella glow) and plan to get the SMT titles digitally, because they are just too expensive physically for me (some european/german versions go for 200-300€). Another thing I am gonna buy digitally is Yokai Watch 3, I like the games, but not so much that I want to spend 120€ or more when its 40€ digitally. I have a few more digital only games in mind, but am debating wether or not I really need them or if its just the FOMO that wants me to buy them (for example the Phoenix Wright series)
I feel you on the FOMO! I've been sitting on what games I want to grab off the eshop myself and haven't narrowed it down quite yet. There's still time and I have a feeling some of the popular titles like Phoenix Wright may see Switch ports eventually (well, maybe not the one w/ Professor Layton because of potential licensing issues but you never know).
I only had 2 3DS games before knowing the Eshop closes down. Now I have over 30 and bought them all physically. I also purchased a new 2DS XL Pokeball Edition. Next I buy all available DLC's for the systems and I'm set ^^
I'm glad you were able to pick up a lot of physical copies recently! I need to review & make sure I pick up all the DLC for my games too before March 😅
Another thoroughly enjoyable video Emily! The amount of research, effort and just knowledge you provide with these videos is always stellar, specially the sources you go to in which you obtain your games as well! Again, stellar work as always :)
I just wanted to say thank you! I just ordered Etrian Odyssey 5 and SMT 4 from VGP for only 120Euros (after tax). Compared to the prices offered here, that's a great deal for me. both games are over 120 euros alone CIB here.
This video was awesome, literally only factor I think you didn’t mention was use of the 3D effect-some people (myself included) are attracted to the idea of playing these games in 3D. The novelty def makes specific games more alluring/collectible even if they are on other consoles. Also glad to see Stella Glow got mentioned twice and also made the final list! (the launch edition is my favorite piece in my collection lol) :)
Yeah I realized while editing I forgot to mention this important aspect! I'll admit 99.9% of the time I have the 3D turned off but it's really a novel feature on the system.
@@orbalology I feel most people are like this! video is such a good resource for collectors, again awesome job! Bet ppl getting into 3DS will be watching this many years from now great stuff lol
People often say that they'd rather turn down or off the 3D, but to me it often feels like I've missed out on something when I bought a New 2DS XL instead of a classic 3DS. I really like my system, but I kind of wish I experienced the actual 3D before deciding for myself whether it was a gimmick or not.
Great vid. For whatever reason, I've never got around to buying a 3DS. But am really considering finally doing so. Only haven't yet. Cause the past 6 months I've been getting more Wii, 360, PS3 games. And, more DS games for the collection. But really thinking about cashing out vacation hours. And buy a 3DS plus games with that 😂
Wonderful video! You have such great insight on game collecting, and it's all organized very well. It's always nice to see the way you approach this hobby ^^
Great guide for collecting on the 3DS. I love the console there are so many great games on it. I'm still trying to get some of the games and DLC I want digitally.
Nice, awesome taste! Just today i finished my 3ds journey with the last titles i really wanted (Stella Glow, Soul Hackers 3d and Corpse Party 3ds) im still missing stuff like majoras mask, some pokemon games and so but i now have all the heavy hitters for me!!
Great video, I always enjoy them, I’m missing some RPG that you mentioned like the fire emblems and I will be getting them later trying to get them before prices start rising. I got all my dragon quest witch are a must for my collection I love DQ.
This is helpful, thank you! I have been stressing about the eShop closing on 3DS and Wii U lol. 😅 I love all of the Fire Emblem games, and glad to see Stella Glow get attention too!
Just noticed you have already reached more than 7k subs.. Congratulations and a great start to 2023! Your content is really informative specially for collectors! Thanks 👍
Stumbled across your channel a little while ago and have been religiously watching the current content. But I recently decided I want to start collecting something - initially was looking at Neo Geo Pocket but the prices are insane. So, I looked to my old 3ds this weekend and was gutted to find, as you point out, that it's region locked. I lived in the US for 15 years and picked it up there but I'm back home in the UK now which is going to make getting physical copies for the machine trickier. You pointed out a canadian site - is Canada considered the same region as the US for the 3DS? Saw some good titles there and am thinking of ordering but want to be sure. Keep making videos please - your content is so honest.
I'm hoping that if Majora's Mask gets a remake on the Switch or a future console, it can be a mix between the two since I disliked the eye thing going on with the bosses, the change to the Zora mask, and the giant's mask change. I liked the song and bomber notebook changes though. I'll make sure to look in to at least picking up Radiant Historia, Metroid, and the few Layton games I'm missing, and try to check out the other games you recommended as well.
Awesome video, sadly I missed the 3DS shop. Looks like only about ~10 or so games I may have missed out on, so not too bad. Pokemon haha... I have doubles of each sealed for now, same with most DS, missing 2 sealed and 1 open.
great video, this was very knowledgeable and i'm surprised how much i learned also i'm happy you mentioned stella glow which is probably my favorite 3DS game
This is an extremely well thought out and well presented video. Keep up this quality and you’ll have a lot more subs in 2023. Also, nice collection! Mine is okay, but I’m super jealous of yours.
I got a 3DS in 2016 and modded it. I'm getting a modded Switch in the middle of this year. My top 5 games of 3DS is definitely 1. Rune Factory 4 2. Fire Emblem Awakening 3. Fire Emblem Echoes 4. Yokai Watch or Monster Hunter Stories 5. Yokai Watch or Monster Hunter Stories I still need to play SMT IV, Bravely Default, Bravely Second, and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. I just didn't love Overclock and Stella Glow's old style grid system. On the Switch, I feel like I'm gonna love RF3S but not so much Rune Factory 5. I just don't like any of the bachelors and bachelorettes even after seeing every event and they they have
I'm currently prioritizing by price given that the e-shop is closing. Some games are so much cheaper on the e-shop then physical copies (lookin' at you all of shin megami tensei). After which if you really want games for collecting and not playin', get the zelda titles and maybe the pokemon titles as well (still relatively affordable new for the time being apart from things like pokemon heart gold, omega ruby etc those are just too expensive imo). Otherwise save yourself some money and go for used games (heck pick up loose cartridges and put em in a case). Do compare prices between the e-shop and the physical copies tho as some physical copies are less expensive and visa versa.
How exciting! It's crazy how much a used New 3DS costs. I have the same gold Zelda 3DS. I don't have a lot of 3DS carts, I bought most of them digitally on the eShop.
Lol, for a moment I thought you lived in Japan due to the background. Very cool been on the DS binge for a personal collection so this was quite helpful
@@orbalology Yes pretty much have run it down to just grab the first party exclusives...that are exclusive to the handheld and with no potential remaster being made at all
Do you think it's worth seeking out a copy of Radiant Historia on the 3DS if you already have the original DS release? Also I must agree with your tip on hacking and removing the region lock from the 3DS. Not only can you get a cheaper console but you also can import European releases which are sometimes way cheaper. I did that exact thing with Rhythm Thief and was able to obtain it at 70 USD compared to the $300+ it sells at for the North American release. Thanks for the well thought out guide~
The Radiant Historia 3DS version has some graphical, audio, and a few quality of life improvements that I hear make it a richer experience compared to the original DS game. There's also a 3rd route that imo was just ok though a nice addition all the same. When factoring in price the DS version is cheaper but it is missing some key components that I think enhance the 3DS version. If you're a big ATLUS and JRPG fan I would say paying a little extra for the 3DS copy is probably worth it. And that's a good tip! I notice the PAL version of Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy substantially cheaper compared to the NA so I'm tempted to go that route too.
They offer a unique spin to the monster collecting/battling JRPGs. I hope you enjoy them! I haven't gotten to them myself yet but plan to in the near future :)
@@orbalology if you can think of a video game character, they're probably in one of those games! The magnificent Segata Sanshiro appears in the second. I laugh at his dialog all the time! They're really like the Justice League with video game characters instead of super heroes.
Hi Emily! Very informative and helpful video, 3DS is one of my favorite portable system because n64 remakes Ocarina and Majora’s Mask 3D, it has a lot great games and the library it’s huge. Hopefully they’ll do a port or remake of Kid Icarus Uprising for Nintendo switch. I’ve never played it on 3DS 😅. I have a question for you. What’s your most anticipated game of 2023? Either Switch or PS5.
My most anticipated games are the Trails localizations!! So a tie between Trails to Azure and Trails into Reverie. There are a lot of other exciting 2023 games coming out that I'm hyped for this year too :)
Very nice recommendation list at 25:45... there are only two that I haven't played there. I didn't like SMTIVA (loved SMTIV, though), but I definitely agree on the rest!
I already made a list on what I plan to get. Believe me, this is also a recommendation and like you, much of my collection is physical. The others are digital because obvious is obvious.
@@orbalology I already know what I want for both 3DS and Wii U. I made a list for the Wii U and many of which are Virtual Console games that I hope to cover on my channel. For 3DS, same thing. I will be investing a lot of my own money on it and I couldn't have it any other way. Plus World Edition copies count as US copies. Take it from me. I actually own two of them: Triple Deluxe and Alpha Sapphire.
great review, I was lucky enough to get a FE 3DS XL on release but now have it shelfed since I been playing on other systems, need to charge it and get it up again for the last pull before the close. I picked up a few suggestions from your vid and used the links. Need to finish Echo's (got stuck on final battle), but all other FE's are covered just need to check DLC :) Surprised you did not mention Culcept revolt, still fairly cheap, something i had fun playing but maybe not everyone cup of tea :)
Oh where have you been seeing Culcept Revolt for decent prices? I've just been seeing them go for $75-100, if not more for the collector's edition, recently.
@orbalology so new, I was seeing 50-70 for the none ce us ed on the bay, so we probable see the same pricing. I just thought that was somewhat cheap compared to other games. Wish I had a deal site for you.
Great video, I have been trying to get some more 3DS games myself in the last couple of months and this has been helpful! Had to get a fair few digitally since I am quite late to the party with the 3DS. . . I've already got both Dragon Quest 7 & 8 but I noticed you said you thought we might see these again later since it is such a popular series. Both of these are ports/remakes already from the PlayStation days, do you think they would be ported a second time onto a new generation of console (Switch or otherwise)?
- Native English games:
Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright Trilogy & Ace Attorney 4 Apollo Justice - The Ace Attorney trilogy just like the DS versions of the game in Japan have English on the cart.
Resident Evil Revelations: This was released on other consoles and the 3DS is probably the worst way to play this game but it’s cheap and does have English
Shovel Knight: Again, this was released on every other console known to man but does have English and Free DLC as well.
Pokémon: All the main line Pokémon games starting with X&Y have multiple languages on the cart. The 3DS games are still price at MSRP or lower but as Emily mentioned in her video, these most likely will go up in price someday, but the Japanese versions of games always tend to trend much lower
Kokuga: It’s a ground-based shooter made by Iuchi Hiroshi, of Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga fame. Has a western eshop release but all the menus are in English.
-Games with Fan Translations: Games we never got in the west but have great fan translations are Dragon Quest Monster 1&2, Dragon QuesT Monsters Joker 3/3 Professional, Dragon Quest Slime Mori Mori 3 (AKA Rocket Slime), Digimon World: Re Digitize Decode, Great Ace Attorney 1&2 (Has switch port) EX Troopers, Puyo Puyo Chronicle
-Games that don’t really need English to Enjoy: There are a few games I think you should consider getting that you don’t need English to enjoy, in no particular order; Theatrhythm Dragon Quest, Sayonara Umihara Kawase (also released on vita and US E-shop as Yumi’s Odd Odyssey, Box Boy! Hakozume Box (This a physical of the Box Boy games that are on the E-shop in America. The full package with the amiibo is incredibly expensive but the game by itself without the amiibo is reasonably priced.), Karous The Beast of Re:Eden (great shooter but a bit pricey around 7,000 Yen) Plus any Nintendo published platformer, are all cheap and need no English to enjoy (your Mario’s your Kirby’s etc)
Great sports/RPG hybrids made by Level-5
3. In Game DLC - There are a few other games that weren’t mentioned that have in game DLC, often times free that you should get. All The Monster Hunter Games have tons of free DLC which include, missions, palicos, titles, items etc, the SMT games have some free in game DLC as well
4. Recommendations - There are a few games I’d like to recommend which weren’t mentioned in the video which I think you should consider picking up as they are relatively cheap and are very good for the platform they are on. In no particular order
Ultimate NES Remix: I think this by far the best pick up and play game on the platform, lots of bite sized challenges across the various Nintendo released franchises on the NES. Can’t go wrong
Pilotwings Resort: This game I think was unfairly criticized because it was a launch title.
Thanks for this!! Lots of solid advice here!! 😊
Great write up!!
@@brentvance9090 thank you. Good luck in your 3DS collecting journey ^^
Thank you! Very useful information.
Going to read the recommendations later once I'm off work
Omg you're adorable and I love how passionate you are about the 3DS.
I could hear you talk about that all day
Man, I love clamshell designs for handhelds. Compact and built-in screen protection. The GBA SP was perfection.
The clamshell designs have great form & function! :)
Wow Orbalology so quickly became my favorite gaming RUclips channel, keep up the great work I can’t wait to watch this one!
Aww thanks! 😊
It's a good time to secure all the eshop exclusives! Best of luck with your 3DS collecting :)
Just sold my copy of 7 and 8 last month but I’m going to get ‘em back 8 is over 100 dollars but it’s worth it
@@demetriuspowell29 That’s exactly what has happened to me. I’ve sold games only to end up having to buy them again.
Thanks for the clarifications around the world vs. standard editions...definitely helps me with my collecting/purchases. Keep up the great work!
I’m late in the game into collecting game’s recently and your videos have helped me understand more about how I should go about collecting games and your tips really are helpful!
I'm glad my videos have been able to help!! Happy collecting :)
I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying them!! 😆
I'm glad to hear it's been helpful! I hope you can snag a copy of Project X Zone 2 for a good price sometime soon 🤞
Kid icarus was quite good during my childhood, I have lots of great memories

@@DaveOfTheDaiqurisI know you dont need me to tell you but, there is something wrong with YOUR comment. Its cringe, and quite honestly a little creepy. Do you always try to defend other mens' honor like that or only in RUclips comments?
@@alleykat1750 Oh ssh yourself.
Amazing video, much thanks from a huge 3DS fan and physical collector 👍
The 3DS might well be my fave console of all time…my love and appreciation grows every day for the little 3DS 😍
Thanks! The 3DS is such a wonderful system, glad to hear it's one of your favorites too :)
@@orbalology From a recent subscriber to your channel, just wanna say your vids are amazing and keep up the great content
Much love from a UK gaming aficionado/nerd! :)
One of my favorite videos from you so far. Very informative and loved hearing you talk about Radiant Historia, Devil Survivor Overclocked and Legend of Legacy. 👍👍
I worry the 3DS will be overshadowed in the future by the DS and Switch so I’m excited to watch videos like this and hope to see more like it.
Asking around certainly never hurts! And best of luck with rebuilding the 3DS collection :)
What I am enjoying most about your content is that it's informative rather than just compiling lists. Thank you!
Thank you!! I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying the videos :)
Insane that it's since skyrocketed in price since then
It would be interesting to see videos where you show us your collection for each platform.
Very nice and comprehensive video! The 3DS is such a great system to collect for, especially when you consider the relatively cheaper cost of the games upon release.
The 3DS had some amazing prices, especially those $20 Nintendo Select games!
I was literally thinking of picking up a 3ds and starting a collection -- this video couldn't have come out at a better time!
Oh I'm glad the timing worked out well for this!! Best of luck with your 3DS collecting, it's a great system with so many gems :)
Haha, thank you! I'm also glad to hear you've been able to secure some of those tricker to get games - they're well worth it :)
Completely entrancing from the first second. I just found your channel so its time to binge the backlog of videos.
These are great tips! I'm so glad they're releasing Theatrhythm for the Switch, my first thought when they announced the eShop closure was 'oh, I'm going to have to buy ALL the DLC,' so at least that's one less thing to worry about 😆
Haha saved by the remaster on the Switch! 😂 Hopefully they won't go as crazy with the DLC this time.
I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying the videos, and best of luck with your 3DS collecting!
I'm actually not Canadian, but from California 😊
A very solid starting collection guide!
Thank you!! 😁
This is the most detailed in-depth video about the 3ds I have watched. This is very helpful. You know so much about the system
Thank you!! Haha I've probably spent too much time thinking and researching about these things over the years 😅
I ended up, back when the announcement first went out, just biting the bullet and spending the $300 for a 3ds with CFW preinstalled.
Really great advice. One I should probably adhere to to get the last few expensive games I want
I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying Soul Hackers! I really want to get to that before playing the recent sequel 😄

Excellent video as always Emily. Imov if you are into RPGs Atlus games are the one to look up asap.
Thanks! And agreed ATLUS games are musts especially for JRPG fans :)
It´s my first video, and really liked it. Lady, you've gained yourself a new fan.
Thanks!
Another thoroughly enjoyable video Emily! The amount of research, effort and just knowledge you provide with these videos is always stellar, specially the sources you go to in which you obtain your games as well! Again, stellar work as always :)
Thank you, Mike! I really appreciate your kind words :)
Ever oasis is such a hidden gem been looking forever for that one
Thank you so much for your advice! I'm trying to get as many games as I can before this shop closes for good.
I just wanted to say thank you! I just ordered Etrian Odyssey 5 and SMT 4 from VGP for only 120Euros (after tax). Compared to the prices offered here, that's a great deal for me. both games are over 120 euros alone CIB here.
Oh I'm glad to hear VGP came in with much cheaper prices for you! I know in Europe SMT 4 can be a difficult one to import.
And buy a 3DS plus games with that 😂
I have some of the basics but I would like to dive deeper into 3DS collecting. Thanks for this video!
My pleasure, I hope some of these tips & things to consider helped!
Wonderful video! You have such great insight on game collecting, and it's all organized very well. It's always nice to see the way you approach this hobby ^^
Thank you!! I sometimes feel like I overthink some of these collecting caveats and things but I'm glad to hear it's coming across well :)
Great guide for collecting on the 3DS. I love the console there are so many great games on it. I'm still trying to get some of the games and DLC I want digitally.
Thanks! I'm still trying to comb through all my games to make sure I grab all the digital content I wanted in time too!
Yay! Congrats on scooping up your last few prioritized titles!!
Theatrhytm Final Fantasy for NEW 3DS is very addictive game. Again great selection of RPG games!
Thank you!! 😆
Great video, I always enjoy them, I’m missing some RPG that you mentioned like the fire emblems and I will be getting them later trying to get them before prices start rising. I got all my dragon quest witch are a must for my collection I love DQ.
One of the best videos I've seen on this topic! Thanks!
Thank you so much! 😄
This is helpful, thank you! I have been stressing about the eShop closing on 3DS and Wii U lol. 😅 I love all of the Fire Emblem games, and glad to see Stella Glow get attention too!
My pleasure, I'm glad to hear you found it helpful! Hopefully it helped relieve some of your stress too :)
The Stella Glow, Lord of Magna, and 7th dragon launch editions are fantastic.
I really miss how Atlus, Sega, and Xseed used to package their launch editions.
Great video! I’m looking to get back into 3DS this year, so I appreciate having all this info in a straight forward way.
My pleasure! I'm glad you found this guide helpful :)
I loved Fantasy Life, one of my favourite 3DS and Level 5 games.
It's such a quality title! Would love to see a sequel come to console some day :)
I really enjoyed the video ty. In my opinion the 64 Zelda ports were done very well and improved the games as a whole.
Thanks! :)
Just noticed you have already reached more than 7k subs.. Congratulations and a great start to 2023! Your content is really informative specially for collectors! Thanks 👍
Thank you so much! :)
Very informative, thanks for the primer Em! I love that potted tree, too! Great video!
Thanks! Haha yeah the tree branches I thought made a nice background addition 😆
Awesome guide! The 3DS really was a great system! I think I only have a few more I want to pick up sometime since I'm pretty happy with my collection.
Oh which ones have you been considering?
A Majora's Mask remake at some point would be awesome! I never played the original but I do like the idea of mixing certain elements in a new remake.
Awesome video, sadly I missed the 3DS shop. Looks like only about ~10 or so games I may have missed out on, so not too bad. Pokemon haha... I have doubles of each sealed for now, same with most DS, missing 2 sealed and 1 open.
great video, this was very knowledgeable and i'm surprised how much i learned
also i'm happy you mentioned stella glow which is probably my favorite 3DS game
Thank you and I'm glad I was able to share something new!
This is an extremely well thought out and well presented video. Keep up this quality and you’ll have a lot more subs in 2023.
Also, nice collection! Mine is okay, but I’m super jealous of yours.
Thank you so much! 😄
I got a 3DS in 2016 and modded it. I'm getting a modded Switch in the middle of this year. My top 5 games of 3DS is definitely
1. Rune Factory 4
2. Fire Emblem Awakening
3. Fire Emblem Echoes
4. Yokai Watch or Monster Hunter Stories
5. Yokai Watch or Monster Hunter Stories
I still need to play SMT IV, Bravely Default, Bravely Second, and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. I just didn't love Overclock and Stella Glow's old style grid system. On the Switch, I feel like I'm gonna love RF3S but not so much Rune Factory 5. I just don't like any of the bachelors and bachelorettes even after seeing every event and they they have
Loved the vid! Always a pleasure to watch you
Thank you! :)
Watching this after the direct with both fantasy life and professor layton!!! exciting that these series are getting revived in the west
I was so happy to hear of Level-5's comeback in the west!! Really looking forward to how they'll continue these franchises on the Switch :)
Ahhh nice, the Zelda ALBW one was my first 3DS system and I still really love it!
Lol, for a moment I thought you lived in Japan due to the background. Very cool been on the DS binge for a personal collection so this was quite helpful
Glad to hear this was helpful, best of luck with your collecting! 😊
@@orbalology Yes pretty much have run it down to just grab the first party exclusives...that are exclusive to the handheld and with no potential remaster being made at all
Your 3DS library is absolutely incredible.
Thanks! I'm really happy with where it is today :)
Great to hear. I feel a very similar way about my GameCube collection.
I bought the pricey Yo-Kai Watch games from a friend last week. I've never played the series, but I love JRPGS!
They offer a unique spin to the monster collecting/battling JRPGs. I hope you enjoy them! I haven't gotten to them myself yet but plan to in the near future :)
Fantasy Life is a very good choice to start. That game and Dragon Quest VII-VIII are my most played games of the system.
Fantasy Life is such a delight! The Dragon Quest games are classics too :)
Your consistency in uploading is incredible 🎉
Thank you 😄
Great video. Great collection! Nice to see
Thank you! :)
Great video as always! Love the PNP Games shoutout! Cheapest place I’ve seen to get Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna!
Thank you! PNP games has a lot of great things in both their new and used sections! I just wish they offered free international shipping like VGP 😅
@@orbalology Totally agree!! But for some of the deals, I’ll gladly pay the shipping lol! They def came in clutch on Torna for me!
I love that you have 7th Dragon and Radiant Historia! Hardcore. I would love a Radiant remake on switch.
A Switch remake (or a sequel/spiritual successor) of Radiant Historia would be awesome!
I can confirm a lot of your advice goed for the PAL regions as well! Great advice!
Oh I'm glad to hear, thank you!!
The Project X Zone games were so much fun!
I keep hearing good things! These I purchased towards the latter half of last year and I'm looking forward to getting to them :)
I didn't like SMTIVA (loved SMTIV, though), but I definitely agree on the rest!
love your channel😍
I already made a list on what I plan to get. Believe me, this is also a recommendation and like you, much of my collection is physical. The others are digital because obvious is obvious.
It's good to have a set list to prioritize at this point! As well as make room for some digital before it becomes unobtainable otherwise.
Yup the World Editions have NA carts so they are basically the same.
Stella glow is an amazing game, found it sealed online for about £50 and it was definitely worth it
Oh nice! Glad to hear you liked that one & were able to find a new copy 😄
ngl I thought you were Claire Saffitz in this thumbnail and she had started making game videos. great video!
Good advice thank you.
Great video! As always.
Thanks! 😆
great tips and a lot for me to think about !!
Thanks! Hope you're collecting has been going well :)
great review, I was lucky enough to get a FE 3DS XL on release but now have it shelfed since I been playing on other systems, need to charge it and get it up again for the last pull before the close.
Great video ! I'm glad I found the channel 😀
Thank you! :)
