I just found out about Andy Schauf. Got a lot of catching up to do. I'm 72. Went through a depression where I couldn't listen to music. Now I'm amazed at the talent. Where have I been all this time?
These comments make me happy. There's so much beautiful music being made all the time, it bums me out to see folks with their lazy "kids these days make crap music" takes.
Hey Kevin, sorry to hear about the depression. Hope you had good people around you to help you get out of it. Or was it something that you had to get past on your own? In any case, good you're back and good that you like Andy Shauf. He's amazing.
Sheryl asks the best questions and never comes off as having just read some notes on the artist/band and faking her interest or understanding of them! Such a professional interviewer and a great interview!
I don't think I've seen Andy smile so much before, is it the funny drummer - In that case I need to get me one! I read some comments about people saying Andy should open up more at interviews, I say: Why not just let each and every one of us be who we are. Andy writes gorgeous songs, has a voice that warms my heart and he offers his music to us. Enough to be grateful about in my opinion. 🧡
I agree, but Andy just seems really uncomfortable most of the time tbh. Like, I get the feeling that he's not at peace with being an awkward person. Aware, but not at peace.
@@Bonneville_Brute the kind of work he's in is highly unnatural. I thought the same as you at first... But I think it's those elements of the work he's in that are still highly uncomfortable and rightly so. Those elements are not why he makes music and to be expected to carry and promote yourself like that in the spotlight is highly bizarre and unnatural. Sure he could develop a radical acceptance of that and be more at peace with it; but I feel it only highlights what he's truly about... The art
@@Bonneville_Brute even the gigging aspect. Performing live isn't necessarily something that every artist wants to be doing, but it's essential for the path he wants to take. We don't have the "privilege" of seeing most people at work... And so intimately. I think it all adds to his charm personally; it reads to me as him wearing his vulnerability and his principles on his sleeve and makes the whole experience that much more genuine and sincere.
I think when he cracks a smile it's from a small, almost unnoticeable mistake. Like at 3:03 he almost ran out of breath, 16:52 he almost for got the pick-up lyrics. Usually one of the band-mates will make eye contact and try not to laugh when that happens in a live performance
In the first rehearsal, Andy casually mentions, 'We're probably going to play on KEXP when we are in Seattle...' Drummer is like, "I'll chart all the songs and bring them in my manila folder to the next rehearsal." Andy, 'Great, can you also play quiet like me?' Drummer - 'can I make weird facial expressions while I hit the drums quietly?' Andy, 'Sure man.'
The Neon Skyline is just such a great album when you carefully listen to the lyrics and find links between the songs. Kinda felt that Andy didn't sing Dust Kids and Fire Truck, they are sooo sensitive and beautiful!!
My dad, who taught himself to play guitar and woulda loved Andy and this album, has a guitar strap just like that! Great performance, and hoping Sheryl gets back to being her old self! Glad to see you back!
Goddamnit Andy-I am in love with Judy after listening to 'The Neon Skyline' obsessively! Also, great to see Cheryl back at it in the KEXP live space. We love you!
I had tickets to see him earlier this year and the show was postponed till December... now it’s looking like this Covid situation is gonna be going till then and it will probably be cancelled then too... breaks my heart I wanna hear this album so badly live
^_^ Andy's hilarious; he talks about the emotional weight of the "The Party" and then closes Neon Skyline with an absolutely emotional bomb "Changer". Damn good stuff Andy!!
This was the last show I had originally intended to see before lockdown. Shorty after I saw the "last live show in Seattle" at Neumos. I didn't recognize the bands but I went just because I knew I wouldn't be able to for a while. It was surreal, everyone in the audience was from a local band, freaking out about their immediate future. The fog machine was cranked cause no one would report it to the fire marshal, and the stagehands were dressed in biohazard suits as a joke since no one was taking it seriously yet.
Same! It was also my birthday. Based on your profile pic there is a chance you and your friends were actually right next to me. Were you with a guy that kept yelling "ANDAYYY" in between songs? I think his name was Andy too. Which is in fact my name as well; we chatted about it at the start of the show. But maybe it was a different guy. Lots of young dudes wearing flannels, my apologies if I've mistaken you.
@@herb_2 Hi Herb! Happy Birthday! I was with my GF and here cousin and cousin's GF; I don't believe any of them were yelling "ANDAYYY". That sounds like something I would do, but I don't think I did either.

What an amazing performance, I'm never disappointed by Andy nor his band, it feels as though as I'm attending the studio recording version of the album and it's quite impressive! I love you Andy, it's safe to say that you're such a peculiar artist with an eclectic taste. Keep it coming Ps: am I the only one having trouble coping with Sheryl's tiredness, she looks sick and it makes me sad.
Hey @KEXP! You are the best. Can you please go back and list the musicians who play in all of these incredible performances that you produce for us? That would be so cool. Thanks! ❤😊
Why can't Andy be a little more modest and just admit that he's playing with a sensational group of talented musicians. He's been playing with the keys player, the bass player and the little Asian saxophonist for the past 3 albums! I love em all, listened hundreds of times all the way through. Us drummers don't get much luck (I'm a drummer) Andy's had like 3 different ones, every record there's a new on, lead guitar either, also a couple different guys (all amazingly great!) but at least just state it for the record that they've been helping you make these awesome live videos. I wanna see Andy live here in Miami, pleeeaaasee come!

Andy Shauf is a genius.
I love the clarinet showing up live now. To me it's kind of his trademark, goes well with the melody and get us into this story's deep atmosphere.
Exactly! I have the same thoughts about clarinet in Andy's music, it's such a great instrument 😁
Went to a show in Tennesee and yeah, it's intoxicating, a layer of fucking wonderful tone!
I use clarinet sometimes. It's an under-rated instrument.
This drummer is awesome. Such feel.
Love how much fun the drummer is having on that first song. So engaged
Saw them live earlier this year. The drummer had such a great time. He filled the room with joy. Jealous of his skill and passion...
@@Bin909ableI was gonna say the exact same thing! Saw them in Sweden, the drummer had my attention the whole show. He plays really tight!
It's like the drummer's face is dealing with the most technical recital ever, I love it.

I adore how those tracks add to the narrative so gently. Andy is a great storyteller. Fire truck is indeed lovely.
