Being a retiree on a modest budget, I've salivated over some of the more expensive reels, but I have to be realistic. I'll probably never purchase a reel costing over 100 dollars but I just purchase the Lews Speed Spool LFS and it's a real step up from my other Black Max combo. I actually made my decision partially based on Debo's review, so there's that. But yeah, It can do everything I will ever need.

The Aird X is one of the best rods in the under $100 price point that I have used. I have a spinning and casting version of the rods and my brother has 3 spinning versions. Overall one of my favorite rods for me and my brother to fish with without breaking the bank.

Use plumber's tape (teflon tape) on the reel seat. It's thinner and more conforming to the the threads on the reel seat, and in addition will provide more grab than the electrical tape to the threads to keep it from loosening.

Great video. This is right where I’m at $150 - $170is my top for a combo. I fish from the bank so I tend to spend less on the rod so I can work in dual brake system reels. Been shopping rod sales to keep price in that $50-$70 range. ..... my favorite budget rod and reel combo was $160. Abu Garcia revo stx $104 and then Ark Lancer Pro 7’2”MH/MedF $56. It’s been amazing for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, whopper ploppers, swim jigs. Abu bringing out new models has plummeted the gen 4 reels and ark must be updating rod models or bringing out a new lineup because the most I’ve spent was $87 on a Tharp series rod.

My budget gear this year includes a couple of rods from 13 fishing, Lamiglas, Shimano and Ugly Stik Carbon, and new reels from Okuma, ABU Garcia and SixGill. Broke one of the 13 Fishing spinning rods, and the Okuma baitcasting reel is very touchy, but, overall I'm fairly impressed. I've used Berkley Trilene XL for years, as well as Bagley's Silver Thread Cofilament for a few years. I also think that the monofilament lines from Sufix are a pretty good buy. I love the SixGill reels I bought, the special run Autism Anglers reels. Great reel for the money, and a great cause.

Dick's may still have the 13Fishing Fate w. Origin Ft combo for $100. Its 7'3 MH Fast and feels pretty true to that.

I have a Lew's American Hero spinning combo that I bought a few years ago at Dick's Sporting Goods. I refer to it as my Frankenstein's Monster Combo because of all of the mixing and matching I have had to do with it.... switched the reel because I broke it, replaced the tip twice because of a broken guide and breaking the tip by closing it in a car door. I absolutely love that rod for Ned Rigs. True budget.... $24.99. 😁

The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!
