Brickie Left Marshalltown for W. Rose - Why?

- Find out why this brick layer discarded his Marshalltown trowel and fell in love with his new W. Rose.
We have reviewed trowels before and Marshalltown faired quite well, but it seems there's no contest here and it's rare to see a brickie so gushing over a new trowel. It looks like there's no turning back for him, this new W Rose is the best masonry trowel he's used.
This W. Rose trowel was bought on Amazon for £85.
Dave prefers the Narrow London blade pattern rather than the Wide London or Philadelphia pattern.
======================
A Brief History of W. Rose
For over 200 years W. Rose has been known for the highest quality of masonry tools. William Rose established the company as a blacksmith shop in 1798 in Blockley Township, Pennsylvania near Philadelphia, just 10 years after the ratification of the Constitution of the United States.
The blacksmith shop spent much of the early 1800s making cavalry sabres and officer swords for the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and the U.S. Civil War. In 1864, W. Rose began specializing in quality edged tools, knives and trowels. The company issued their first catalogue this year featuring tools for bricklayers, tile setters, plasterers and stone masons.
W. Rose was purchased in 1884 by O.B. Goodwin. He moved the firm to Elmwood Avenue in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, where W. Rose trowels continue to be made today. The company was in the Goodwin family for three generations before being sold to longtime employee Edward ’Bucky‘ King and his sons in 1989.
In 2001, Kraft Tool Co. acquired this legendary company and remains dedicated to maintaining the superior craftsmanship of its tools.

Rose are the best. I like how their handles are fatter. Don’t need to grip as tight
Bought & tried W.Rose 12' Philly, 12' London, MT 12' Philly, 11' Philly, & 12' wide London. W.Rose has stiffer steel than MT can feel it when cutting brick, personally prefer MT it has softer / flexible steel less vibrate but wear down a lot quicker. Conclusion of my little experiment, MT philly 11' is the best amongst these 5 (for myself).
Love my Rose been using it a yr now and it's the best trowel I've ever had...always had marshaltown and had lots of them over the many yrs I've been laying bricks but the Rose has stopped my elbow hurting because of the better lift it's better balanced aswell and has a better quality blade all in all the best trowel money can buy. I paid £55 for mine from Speedcrete online.
He has relieved the pain by changing the angle of his wrist.
It would probably have been the same experience, after so long, if he had gone from Rose to Marshalltown.
Regularly swapping between them would be worth considering.
Same applies to any tool which you are constantly and principally using.
A regular and slight variation in angle or weight is beneficial.
The new cork handle is even better!
Here's another tip for you, high lift handles will give you sore wrists after a while but low lift handles will give you sore elbow joints. So it's true here that he's feeling better the pressure is off his wrists but he will eventually get sore elbows so i would hold on to that old trowel to switch back to..these trowels are forged and are all slightly different to each other so you can still find a Marshalltown with the right lift that hits the spot for you.
True from my experience. I'm now using a high lift (Tyzack) trowel, cut small, but I don't take heaping mounds of mortar so... Could care less, health is #1.
The Ragni 10 inch crown narrow London, great trowel for not giving you repetitive strain injury, 🇨🇮🇨🇮
Had my rose 3 years now, still a beast
I have been using rose trials for last three years. I haven't had a problem with my wrist or elbow since.
I can't comment on the trowel as I use a WHS London pattern but I have to say in makes a change to see block work first and bricks laid frog up well done. Oh by the way WHS was £63 + VAT 11 years ago just pleased I bought 3 of them because I hate to think what they cost today.
Hi David is your trowel the old type with the through tang and steel cap on the handle?
I recently bought one online and when it came it just had a crappy plastic cap on wooden handle.
Sent it back. I don't think the old type are available now.
What i actually like about marshalltown IS the lift, very comfortable
They are £41.99 inc vat from speedcrete in Salisbury
Love this post, US Mason here, West coast. Also ditched Marshalltown brick trowels and switched to a Rose wide Philly style 11", 10 years ago. Can't stand a MT brick trowel anymore. Feels uncomfortable and alien to me. No more wrist fatigue on my trowel hand. Left hand still gets sore after 8 hours of laying 8" block. Lol
Thanks Joshua, we love to hear from you guys.
On your WRose trowel. Do you have normal shank height or the low lift? I’m laying 8” block too and I’m trying to find a good trowel
I served my time with a rose and loved it. After 20yrs on a marshaltown range I’ve went back to a rose. I threw it back in my bag. The lift is horrific.
I have a rose London brick trowel. Love it.
I've always used a Marshalltown, until it came to having to buy a new one about 2 years ago, so I decided to try, a Tyzak, it's everything the Marshalltown is but at half the price. A nice Philadelphia blade made from Sheffield spring steel, it was a no brainer, and I love it
Tyzack
@@billshedd55 Go and sharpen your keyboard you sad little twat!!
Sheffield spring steel ?. I’d be doubtful of that .snh global holdings own the tyzack/Whs brand names now and I’d say they are made in China or Taiwan now.
And it's not the narrow london pattern, it's the wide.
Narrow and I don't like Rose rubber handle. I generally use wood.
Cork handles are nice on W Rose
Yea mines a London style. Fucking love it man. Best quality there is.
I lay more stone veneer than brick or block tho. So I can't speak for that but the ol Rose London is about the best I've found
It's taken 5 years but you are correct, the trowel in the video is a wide London.
Philadelphia all day
I've just changed to w rose after using Marshalltown for 15 years ,deffo a better lift angle ,not only that the quality of the steel Marshalltown are using has dropped in recent years
Just bought one my wrist was twitching watching that comparison 😆
Looking for a good trowel for slab laying ... whats the suggestion?
shovel
Marshalltown for me , I bring my old trowel with me to Leicester trade tools, great shop, and put my old trowel on the floor next to the one I'm replacing it with, and if the handle lifts match, bingo. But the bottom line is , a trowel is only as good as the man driving it.
Hi Micky
You are right about the importance of the man/woman on the trowel. I think it is human nature to attach importance to a talisman but I am sure that once a brickie gets used to a trowel they will be able to produce good work with it, but by the same token if something is working for you, why change it?
Stone me i go there to! Cracking little shop with a reputation spread far and wide.
Now don’t lie to me boy
Good video bud. I like both Rose and marshal town and use both at diff times
Great video.
Thanks for uploading
25 years in the trade I've used them both 20 years old my favorite of all time leather handle 11 and 1/2 in l
W. Rose used to be made in Sharon Hill, PA. I live in Philadelphia PA, and I used to know a guy that sold them out of the trunk of his car for 25$ back in the day! So yeah I'm partial to the Rose trowel. Thanks for the review! Cheers from across the pond!!!
When you say used to be made in Sharon hill .did they move to a new premises or have they outsourced the manufacture to some other company do you know.
@@brickbybric Kraft tool company took them over and I believe most of their products are made in China. At least here in the US.
@@bobbymancini9069 hi Bobby thanks for your reply . I had a look the other day after I left my reply to you and I came across a real estate listing for the w.rose Sharon hill premises on Elmwood Ave and they have it listed for sale since aug 2019 . The listing doesn’t mention the machinery in the plant .a chap left a comment on another skillbuilder video some time back and he reckoned Marshalltown and w.rose have outsourced the manufacture of there trowels to the keystone forge company in Philadelphia . I know that bontools have recently brought out a one piece forged line of trowels that they call keystone forged trowels so I’m wondering are the made by the keystone forging company in Philadelphia as well . I’m also wondering what happened the w.rose plant machinery was it packed up and sent to the keystone forging company . I had known that kraft took over w.rose and like a lot of those large company’s they probably source tools from China. I know that kraft have at some point sourced trowels from at least one European trowel manufacturer Anyway thanks for the information and if you come across anymore regarding w.rose you might leave a comment.

@@brickrightbuildinglandscaping Tks Justin . The reason I asked if you bought in online was the trouble with the w.rose trowels is they are the most un uniformly manufactured trowel brand I have ever come across and when you buy them online your taking a gamble that you’ll get one you can get on with . If you went through 15 m.t 19/11 Philadelphia’s they’d vary somewhat but the differences between them wouldn’t be that much but with the rose trowels they can vary like night and day . The most uniformly manufactured trowels Iv come across are the Whs/tyzack .

So is this one Dave is using a wide of narrow London? I am not sure now
Skill Builder if your really serious about finding out get on to Dave .assuming that he hasn’t had the trowel that long it should still be at its manufactured size . (Can’t tell if it’s a 10 or 11 inch length . ) if it’s an 11 inch narrow London its should be 4 3/4 inch wide If it’s a 10 inch narrow London it should be 4 1/2 inch wide, if it’s an 11 wide London it should be 5 5/8 inch wide , if it’s a 10 inch wide London it should be 4 3/4 inch wide. Info from Kraft tools website. That should sort out which blade pattern it is. If the width of the blade is between 6 inch and 6 1/8 inch it’s a wide heel pattern rose. The other main pattern rose make is the round heel pattern but I doubt if it’s one of those.
@@SkillBuilder it's deffo i wide patterm.
@@SkillBuilder that is a wide London pattern.
Rose has a Cork handle now? I can't wait to try that
I'm gonna try it next
Yes and Marshalltown. If you're like me and can't stand the feel of a glove on your trowel hand, you will love the new cork handle. Amazing wicking action and very comfortable
@@伯SouthPaw87 I tried the new Marshalltown, I love the handle but couldn't get used to the lift of the handle. I received the new cork handle trowel and it's GREAT! Far superior to any rubber handle
I wasn't a fan of the coating of the blade. Rose definitely uses better steel
Roger my advice to any bricklayer considering purchasing a new trowel regardless of brand is to buy the trowel in person from a hardware store or builders provider etc and go through all the trowels till you find one that suits you .Marshalltown are a very uniformly manufactured trowel but even with them you will find differences in handle angle , Weight , blade flex. . Of all the trowel brands I have come across I especially would not purchase a rose trowel on line they are the Most un uniformly manufactured trowel I have come across . The guy in the video was very fortunate to be sent one he gets on with . All good trowel manufactures know that the handle angle of a trowel is correctly set when you turn the trowel over on a flat surface the handle should lay flat on the surface with the tip of the blade also making contact with the flat surface. I have found with w.rose standard shank trowels ( they also make a low lift shank trowel) that the handle angles are all over the place . The tang on them can be different heights also the tang can be lying back greater than 90 degrees if you couple that with a high handle angle they are practically unusable. If you purchase a rose trowel in person and find one that suits you then you have a great trowel ( they are made from high quality raw materials) Kraft tools u.s.a are the current owners of the w.rose u.s.a company. I certainly would not pay 85 quid for one . If you buy a brick trowel from an online retailer you are trusting an unqualified person that knows absolutely nothing about trowels to pick your trowel . They will go to the shelf were the trowels are kept they will scan the barcode to see if the have the correct brand type etc and having established that you will get the first trowel they put there hand on . You might be lucky and get a great trowel that suits you ( like the chap in the video ) or you might be sent a load of crap. Stu crompton has a video out of a tyzack trowel he purchased on line and the handle is out of line . If the guy that was sent to pick that trowel off the shelf took even a cursory look at it he would have seen that manufacturing fault and put it in the bin .
One more thing roger .he says it’s a narrow London but I’d be 99.9 percent certain what he has in his hand is a wide London he may have ordered a narrow London but it looks to me like they may have sent him a wide london. The wood handle rose trowels have the manufactures part number stamped on the handle but the proform soft grip handle on his one does not.
That is great advice and, we must remember some of these trowels could be Chinese copies. It may even be that the copies are better. I have seen that before.
Why would someone in a warehouse or shop bin a trowel that passed quality control at the manufacturer? Almost all of the people working in these places are not skilled bricklayers so why would they “choose” your trowel?
Your advice is correct though for a tool you use 8 hours a day and is your main form of doing your job you should go and pick it out yourself. Sadly these days the specialist tool shops selling high end gear are not always easy to find.
Adam Lynch that’s exactly my point Adam .they wouldn’t choose your trowel( they would be under the impression one trowel is the same as the next) ,you’ll get the first one that comes to hand . As for the one Stu crompton was sent , the fault was so obvious you wouldn’t need any training to know it wasn’t right ( just decent enough eye sight) although having said that,Stu was trying to convince himself that the handle was purposely off set because it had something do do with the right handed trowel left handed trowel thing. The lad in the video doesn’t seem to be to worried about the price he payed for the trowel because a ten second look around amazon which is where he bought it and you’ll find them considerably cheaper than the 85 quid he payed for it.
Skill Builder the gammy w.rose trowels I’ve come across weren’t Chinese copy’s they were just badly manufactured. Have you seen any Chinese copies of top branded brick trowels roger .
£85 🤯🤯, a bit of a shame there only £40 quid these days😝😝
I prefer the older rubber handle on the Rose's. Luckily I have a stash of them
lads hording u still got some after these years since this comment?
It wouldn't cost you much to go to a blacksmith or a blade maker and have them personalise a trowel to you.... a tiny bit more than £85 I reckon.
Interesting to see all the different comments on trowels , I have the same problems with new trowels so I tend to buy a trowel with a handle I can thin down to suit my grip and I even tend to cut and shape them to a size that resembles my older trowel due to much wrist problems .I tend to buy whs Philadelphia pattern {leather and wood handle ) and shape them to suit as they are also very light as well, Great trowels for me , but a lot of lads are not to pleased with the quality of steel Marshalltown are using these days and are opting for other trowels .
Rose trowels offer two styles of the lift in the shank, low lift and regular lift.
How do you know if it's a regular lift or low lift? Looking at some on eBay, just says the pattern doesn't mention lift.
Any advice would be great thanks 👍
@@JimJimpmjj the standard shank and low lift shank have different manufactures part numbers.
@@brickbybric okay thanks
That’s a wide London, low lift shank. The leather handles are more expensive than those plastic ones, there from Philadelphia.
I’d be doubtful if it’s a specific low lift shank w.rose . One of the problems with the standard shank w.rose trowels is there anything but standard .I’ve seen the w.rose so called standard shank trowels come with every handle angle under the sun . If the trowel hasn’t the specific mpn that the lowlift shank trowels come with it’s hard to know for sure what it is.
@@brickbybric just bought a 11" rose philly, wanted to see what the fuss is about. The lift is so low, the handle runs almost parallel to the blade. Bloody hard on the wrist. Suppose I was just unlucky, cos like u say, they're very irregular.

£85 for a trowel?!?!?! By christ, in Australia they are $90, which at a rough estimate is around £50! Total rip off. And having used both brands, I would not go back to W.Rose, although that is nothing more than my opinion and preference for the handling
Daniel Renucci he paid way over the odds for it . You can pick them up starting from around 40 quid depending on the handle type you get.
In Canada they're about 65-75$ CAD depending on the type of handle you want, and were next door to where they are forged
When he compared the 2 trowels, honestly i didn't see any difference in the lift. £85 for the same thing u can get for £35? Hope it's worth it.

Rose rules. Marshalltown is 2.
Rose do not rule . Very badly made from top class materials .Riddled with manufacturing faults .very little attention to detail in there manufacture . I’d be surprised if quality control even exists in there factory . When you come across one that suits you the individual one can be top class. Bellota trowels from Spain are made from top class materials like rose but they pay far more attention to detail in there manufacture. As regards attention to detail regarding there manufacture rose are the worst I have come across bar none.
@@brickbybric I have at least 15 Rose in my possession right now. Zero wrong with them I have been buying trowels for almost 50 years 48 to be nearly exact. Some Marshalltown too. Mostly Rose. Never saw a defective one on either.
What defect's have you seen?
PaddleDogC5 I’m talking standard shank w.rose here ( or so called standard shank) I have seen them with every handle angle under the sun including parallel with the deck ( I can’t for the life of me see how they can differentiate between a standard shank one and a low lift one ) . A lot of them I have come across have very high handle angles making them practically unusable. The tangs vary widely in height and angle in relation to the blade . When you get one with the tang laying back greater than 90 degrees and coupled with a high handle angle you can forget about it. . The weight of them differs substantially. The blade flex varies widely ( leaving aside the limber weight ones they make.) where the blade flares out from the tang the edge should be ground square to the flat of the blade often times its ground at an angle that’s as sharp as a razor blade which all points to lack of quality control and attention to detail. As I said made from top class materials and when you get a good one they are excellent to use . I have also seen them slightly curved across the width of the blade which I have never seen in another brand. Very very un uniformly manufactured trowels. I have no doubt that the ones you have are excellent but I’m sure you selected the best in the store.
@@brickbybric that's exactly why I switched to the Marshalltown, the 3 I bought feel exactly the same and the blade has just the perfect amount of flex. The new leather Marshalltowns are awesome
