- My Wife's 2014 Ford Mustang with the 3.7L V6 had a leaking OEM waterpump. So I opted for a gates brand since I've read on the forums that is was a common problem with the oem waterpump. This video is how to replace the waterpump on our 2014 mustang v6 3.7L
Warms the heart to see the younger generations still know how to "twist a wrench". I was beginning to think everybody born 1970 and later and forgotten the satisfaction (and savings) that come with doing it yourself. (of course the gray-brains among us, myself included, have had to make peace with the marriage of computer and automobile along the way). Regardless, job well done.
Bravo!!!!!!! Clear and easy to understand. I now know where the thermostat, thermostat housing, tension pully, water pump, and I know how to change and replace the belts.Awesome job, I had been watching several videos so I can do this with my 2011.
2011 Ford Mustang 3.7 V6 Automatic. Over 200,000 miles and no water pump issues. I did do a coolant flush and replaced the thermostat. Other than that, it runs fine.
Best video I have seen on the pump replacement! Ford here wants 600.000 labor and another 175.00 parts to do this repair. Thanks to you I think I can handle this myself.
Do some more videos.
Thanks J.R., doing this job on my 2012 Muskrat. Your presentation is sooooo easy to watch and follow. You got skills, dude!!! Saved me some serious coin. Today, most shops want upwards of $800.00 to do this pump replacement. Thanks so much for your help!!!
Great video made it easy to replace the Water Pump on my 2012 3.7. One thing a Ford tech pointed out to me is not to mess with the seal on the bottom of the Water pump where the O ring goes. This is the timing cover seal and to clean it before reassembly but never try and remove it. I opted for the Ford replacement kit which also includes the hose with the check valve in it and the lighter 3 bolt pulley. My car's pump lasted 133,000 miles, I'm sure its good for the rest of the life of the car now. Thanks again.
BRO IM SURE PPL IN THE COMMENTS ALREADY TOLD U BUT ITS A 3.7!
Great job J.R! Straightforward videos like yours are just awesome! When mine goes out on my mustang I know where to turn. Thanks man..
Hello I'm a retired mechanic you did a very good job on the video last one I did was 5 years ago and I watched your video just as a refresher course I don't know what it is with these cars but I've gone through two water pumps already on my 2011 very low mileage the third one I'm putting in happens to be a gates so we'll see how that does amazing they don't make cars like they used to my 73 duster I have had for 45 years I put a new water pump back in then and it's still as good as the day I put it in I have a 69 GTO for the last 30 years put a new pump in that 30 years ago and it's still as good as new this car here seems like you got to change the water pump every time you want to flush your antifreeze go figure other than that I like the car but I think it's a design problem with this particular motor anyway good job thank you
before I order this Gates, how did your Gates water pump hold up?
Thank you bro. Just changed my water pump out in my 2014 v6 3.7 following your video! $501 vs $100, I'll take the save! Now tomorrow I'm changing my ac belt because mine has a crack in it. Feeling pretty good. 👍
Y have same truck 200+miles how I know when I need to replace it ?
@@luisjorge7344 when your water pump is leaking coolant. If your coolant reservoir is empty or keeps emptying. My car was leaking coolant and overheating.
@@seanhettenbach2101 thank you so much !
Incredibly thankful for this video you made! Thank you! Watched the video once and completed my swap in about 45 minutes. Got the same gates replacement as you so I knew it would work lol. Saved me a lot of money!
before I order this Gates water pump, how well did yours hold up?
Thank you so much!! I need a new water pump and wanted to install the new one myself but was a bit nervous. I now feel fully confident I can accomplish this project. Thanks for the detailed info and great camera work.
Thank you for posting this! This video walked me through the process super fast and easy, only took 2 hours - by far the best video I had found that explained this.
Thanks for taking time to make this video and, saving me a bunch of money!
This video was instrumental in helping me replace my water pump just now, so thank you for that. And for my fellow high mileage/lives where it’s rusty people, you’re not going to be able to get the thermostat assembly off as easy as he did. Get a pry bar and some wd40 and just keep gently working it until you get it off. And he’s not kidding the bolts that go into the thermostat and waterpump can strip real easy I stripped one for the thermostat but it seems to not be leaking so I may have got lucky.
Replaced mine last night using this video! Thanks!!
Brandon Perry happy to help. I know I missed spoke and put the wrong engine size in the title I’ll fix that.
Hey man, thanks for the video! Make sure you replace your overflow tube with one that has a check valve. Yours doesn't appear to have one. Without the check valve, air will flow into the cooling system which will make your water pump faulty once again.
Dommer_3.7 where did you find your overflow tube with a check valve?

big help! I didn't remove any hoses and got away with it! Also i did torque each fastener: 89 in-lb on the water pump and 71 in-lbs on the thermostat manifold. my water pump came with the gasket and one O Ring. Had to go back to the store for the two O rings that seal the thermostat manifold. One O Ring was $11! thanks again
Perfect, thanks for the clear and concise instructions. I changed my temperature gauge too since it was in the first part you take off.
Glad you made this follow up video showing how to fix it. Gave me the confidence to do it after watching your video. I ordered the Motocraft pump replacement kit PW575 / BR3Z8501N and has all the stuff needed and more. It has that new coolant return hose w check valve but taking that one off to replace was annoying. So if someone else is looking to do this, use the other V6 pump video guys bungie cord pull back method and don’t take off most of those hoses on the thermostat. Didn’t use any sealant either per manufactures specs. Car is running great now! Thank you!
@wahsoul3000 can you link me which water pump kit you got i have a 2013 v6
@wahsoul3000 so i just ordered the motorcraft kne that cones with the check valve hose , do i have to adjust or move the check valve or just leave it as it is? and the metal ring that clamps on the hose and check valve do i leave that as is or does it have to be moved as a clamp?
@@DJPickee Leave as is. The metal crimp ring is there to keep the check valve in place and let you know there is one in the hose. Just take the old hose off and put the new one on. Good luck with the repair!
@@WAHSOUL3000 thanks bud!
@wahsoul3000 just changed my water pump but loss of coolant, so i refilled more coolant in the tank between the bottom line and top line, drove car around to let it get to normal temp then idle for a bit then after i let my car completely cool down went back to check on coolant level it dropped an inch below the bottom line, my question is do i need to fill this ba k up to the cold fill line top or between?
When I order the pump I was given an extra water pump gasket. There was on already on the new pump but the pump also had a new gasket in a bag…. They were identical so I don’t know what happen but it’s working fine and nothing is leaking I wish you could have explained how to properly drain the radiator but this was super helpful!!
Ford dealer gave me a cost of $1600 and I have to wait till Dec. Thanks for showing how simple this is. I'll be ordering pump tonight. I'm curious why you didn't also replace thermostat.
Thanks bro. Ill do it today. Apreciate it. 🤟🏼
Because of this video I'm a 36-year-old female that just did the water pump and a thermostat because of this video on another video is that easy
Congrats!!! That is awesome!!!
BRO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS MUCH LOVE !!!!!!
Good tutorial my man 5 stars
Do you have to replace the aluminum water pump bolts as well?
My pump went out at 49,000 miles. Ironically it happened the day after I had my airbags replaced under a recall. What are the odds of that? I called the Ford service manager and told him its too ironic of a coincidence my car is spewing coolant the exact day after they worked on it and he just laughed saying its a coincidence.. I still say they pressure tested or did something to my cooling system without my knowledge to cause the failure in an attempt to up-sell me on services. Anyways, I have a bad back so there was no way I could do this myself even with this great video. I found a shop in town that did the water pump and charged me $245 for parts and labor which I found fair. I have ordered the check valve coolant hose to replace so there are no further issues of air entering the system, it is a factory service bulletin on the 3.7. The part number for the coolant return hose is #ER3Z8276A. Ford actually replaces that part under warranty when they do the pump swap. Thanks for the video.
That's odd I am having the exact same issue exactly one after my airbag recall installment. I don't believe in coincidence.
This exact issue happened to me. Toke my mustang last week for an oil change and they ask to do the recall. I said yes to replace. Then they called to recommend a coolant flush. I told them just a change and thought we were on the same page. Instead they did a flush. A week later (now) I had a puddle of coolant on the ground. I toke it back and they told me it was coincidental that the water pump is leaking. They told me it will cost $450. I called the manager but no answer. Then the service guy called back and said his gonna “help me out” by cutting the cost in half. I believe its not coincidental and are taking full advantage of the airbag recall. Does anyone think we have a case here? Mines is a 2012 with 48,000 miles on it. Definitely keep it in good shape and only toke it to the same dealer for maintenance or anything else thats wrong.
Good concise video thanks for sharing. My kids 2013 has the bearing going out. Rattling sound when it's cold. The pulley has play in it. Car has about 165K on it.
My 2014 has a small drop under it. Dip stick looks good. Hoses an tee. Coming from drivers side im assuming its water pump. Glad its a outside pump.
very informative video mine is making some noise and I am double checking to make sure and because of this video I am going to go ahead and change it out myself. Thanks JR, I was worried about the serpentine belt but relaxed now on doing it myself. thanks for the video. Short and sweet.
F Lewis thanks. I’m happy the video gave you the confidence to undertake the task yourself.
Perfect video man! Mine went out on me at 122k miles.
Before I purchase this Gates water pump, how is it holding up?
thank you for this video man.
What is the torque spec for the bolts? Otherwise great video
There's no such as a 3.6. Its the same as mind. Great vid bro.
My bad haha it is a 3.7L v6
Great video, helpful if you take time to identify tools needed, socket sizes etc. Thanks for taking time to make.
Use a torque wrench and follow torque procedures if you want to do it right> 89 inch lbs, then 45 Degree turn of the wrench.
Awesome video 👍 nice and detailed 👌 made very easy for me to change out 👍
Thank you for sharing 🏁
From Florida 🇺🇲
What Dommer 3.7 says is important. Mine failed @44k miles but pump is fine. Seal leaked because there was no check valve on overflow tube. I would run out and replace that tube before water pump seal fails again regardless if it is a Gates pump or not. Much thanks for ur video though. Saved me buying a pulley wrench tool because everyone takes serpentine belt off first, which makes no sense.
Mine started "leaking" at 47k but I mean Idk if the water pump is bad or not
Great Vid Bro Truly Appreciate U for this Video Just Did this job on My 2013 Mustang 🙌🏾👑💪🏾
Thanks, you make it look simpler. I'm inclined to do mine my self now. Did you torque any of the bolts or know the values or sequences?
James Roy I did not know the torque specs so I just tightened them. To my liking in a kind of crisscross pattern. You can look up the torque specs but I didnt have a torque wrench for smaller values
Thanks. No problems since I take it? I recently looked up the recommend motorcraft replacement part and it comes with a new pulley, a 3 - bolt, but noticed yours is a 4 bolt and was likely stock. I'll have to check if mine is also.
James Roy I bought the gates brand since is uses a 4 bolt pulley which mine had on it.
one more question (been waiting on the time and weather to do mine here). I noticed in the viseo that after you reomved the bolts to the pump it seemed stuck on tight still. You cut and return and the pump is free. What extra effort if any was involved to loosen or remove it, a good tug, a tap with a mallet ....? Thanks
James Roy I knocked it loose with a hammer it was holding onto the gasket.
Awesome highly appreciate you making this video doesn't look bad at all I might even throw 170 thermostat in while I'm there anyway
I know this doesn't have anything to do with cars, but ur mustache is what dreams are made off. I'm a fan of ur hair also.
great video. appreciate the detailed information.
This is a great video!! Thank you
Thanks bro..great vid☺
Awesome thorough video, thank you so much!
Thank you very helpful
Just saved me 600 bucks!!! Thanks
Wish you would’ve showed how to take off the clamps
My mustang just hit 60K and BOOM water pump went out !
Great video, I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for this vid my dude, very helpfull
Clean work fella !
Thank brother it was really helpful
On the thermostat housing i noticed you didnt use any gasket sealant? just not needed? and btw, thx for vid, its been years since ive replaced one myself, rather get my hands dirty than pay the $$$ to have a shop do it.
Thank You! Great video! I will be doing the job today!
Cool video.
Great job. 👌
My Mustang looses coolant also I took it to dealer when it was under warranty and they said they didn't know why it was low on coolant. So a couple years ago I had the coolant changed and now 2 yrs later its starting to loose coolant again with no trace of leakage and no murky oil . So I am confused what it could be. I wanted to know its now 2012 and did this fix your car leaking problem and what did you torque those bolts to ?? thanks
Did you take off the original O ring?
So you don’t have to put RTV on the water pump to seal it?
Thanks for making it look easy. 👍
3.7 not 3.6 but good video dude 👍
Thanks for sharing! just hit 63K miles on my 14' V6 and ford said the water pump is leaking. 60K warranty wouldnt ya know. I have never seen any leaks. They want 750 to do this. Ahh yah, no thanks, What brand water pump are you using?
Never mind, just re watched the beginning to get that make you used.
MOTORCRAFT PW567 {#ER3Z8501B}
Lee Jun I'm using gates brand water pump
2015 Mustang V6 water pump o- ring part # FPG35772 this is bigger than the other one is black the other one is red small part #FPG36111…..Thermostat gasket part #35991 and Thermostat part #65590….. all these cost like $40 save time going back-and-forth to O’Rellys auto parts …
Please if u can get to this comment that would help alot..
What do i need to do special to replace my water pump are they any secrets or literally just do what you did in the video?
Also what the steps to bleed air out after install the new pump
thanks man . what pump brand did you get?
Bahnan Kawria I bought gates brand.
Just saved me lord knows how much!!!!
Thank you
@J.R. Hoye did you bleed it ? or u let it bleed itself
Technically you should burp it to correctly bleed it but this works too
Thanks bro!
Very helpful thanks 💯
Do I need to replace thermostat housing gasket ???
Hello buddy , whats the name of the first part you remove ??
Where can I purchase the water pump do you have link
GJ man real good video
Yeah it's a 3.7L. I think mine's leaking at about 75,000 miles.
im about 72k i started her up and it started forming a decent sized puddle when i gave it some gas
Mine's got over 77K and I noticed the puddle last night. I'll probably be doing the same.
Just had the same thing happen to mine at 72k miles.
Wtf... Mine gave out at 57k
mine started at 47k >.
Dude my thermostat housing WILL NOT come off lol got all four bolts off and lots of wiggle but it just won’t come off smh
Thank you so much!!!!
That doesn’t look so bad. Whats all the hubbub about a timing chain driven internal water pump that when it goes takes out the engine????
FWD applications, the 3.5 and 3.7 feature pumps that are located in the block, running off the timing chain.
FWD applications, the 3.5 and 3.7 feature pumps that are located in the block, running off the timing chain.
Is that the same on a f150 2013 ??
Good job bud! BTW those 17 thumbs downs are just losers who can't get a Mustang!!
Pretty video
You didn’t need to take the hoses off the thermostat assembly.
3.6?
Wait a tic.. I was under the impression that the 3.7's WP was internal 🤨
Heck, I completely blacklisted this engine in my mind but if my WP is really that easy to get to then heck, I have a NewYears project to get done! (2015 V6 owner)
FWD applications, the pump is internal. Edge, Explorer, Fusion to name a few.
Did you have trouble getting the right hose off?
Yo that thing was impossible
How many miles did the engine have on it? Thinking of replacing my water pump as preventative maintenance
My wife’s gave out at 90k. Ridiculous
@@DeezNuts-qu5xn I have a 2017 Mustang 3.7L V6 and mine gave out at 60k miles. I want to do this tomorrow morning but I know my car is slightly newer so I'm not sure if the procedure is exactly the same.
@@OzzyGMS was the process the same ? I'm curious my 2015 v6 is leaking coolant I think it might be the pump it's also at 59k
@@OFFICIALRover yes. I think the only thing different was the bolts for the belt plate has a different amount of bolts than the one in the video. Everything else the same prettt much
@@OzzyGMS pretty easy repair ? You would say
Just changed my 2013 saved 400
Rock auto is showing a chain driven internal water pump for the 3.7 v6 Mustang. What gives ???
They are wrong.
Tf that's it???
The music is so annoying dude
Can I use this for my 2013 V6?
yes same engine
When you will know that the wather pump needs to be replace?? From the belt coms a so sound?
Anca Potocean I noticed it needed to be replaced because i could see it leaking from where the shaft comes out of the water pump that the pulley bolts to.
@@JRHoye cool, thanks !!!
Gates part number is GAT43017.
did you use this Gates part as well? How well did it hold up?
these cars are terrible bleeding air most people cannot do it! warning! car will overheat with air in it! had to park mine on step hill and remove cap in start! you can leave all hoses conected to much work just remove bolts from housing
so you like to listen to taylor swift sing about her mental problems and failed relationships! lmao
Did you add a sealant to the gasket?
No i didnt use sealant
