Fantastic! Thanks! You just taught a 65 year old lady how to do this, although all I want is to retrieve my cd's stuck in my player and get it working again. Good job one handed! Now I have to make my hubby watch this. The original stereo I thought is great. I hope it still works after we do this!
Great video. Had to pull radio to clear a jammed CD (due back at library). Without completely pulling panel, the job too all of 30 minutes. So much easier when you know what to look for.
Great video on how to remove and reinstall the dashboard cowl. One caveat ... if your Dakota only has 2 doors, then there will be a passenger airbag on/off switch in the cowl. I recommend disconnecting the battery and turning the headlights on to discharge any capacitors before disconnecting or reconnecting the airbag switch.
Dang. That's the situation I'm facing with my 2004 Two-Door Regular Cab Dodge Dakota. I will disconnect the battery and leave the headlights on, but wondered if I could simply leave the AirBag switch connected and simply "roll my radio/instrument panel over" (towards me) in that area on the right. Was nervous the AirBags would suddenly deploy if plugged back in the switch connector.
Thanks for the video... I did mine today, 2004 Dakota. Wire gauges appear to typically be AWG 18 on both the included harness and the one to convert to vehicle harness. So 22-18 AWG butt splicers.

It did not. I have a similar video for my old 2004 Grand Cherokee that did have the factory amp and premium sound, so that video may help you out. Hook all 3 black wires together. Also make sure that you have your red wire connected to a switched 12v power source and yellow wire to 12v constant power source.

You have the later style single connector power plug for the stereo. Up until either 2002 or 2003 chrysler used the old style double connector grey and black that was used all the way back to the 1970s. I have the old style in my 2001 dakota(built august 2000)
Thanks for sharing this video, I have a 2001 dakota, but I have one problem, after installing my stereo, the lights will automatically come on when I start my truck, (even when the switch is off) so there is no way to turn them off,(fog lights can be turned on/off) but the headlight switch does not control the lights anymore...any suggestions what went wrong?
thanks for the reply, yes, everything was plugged back normal, my truck is 2x4 so only 3 cables were unplugged, the headlights/internal light/dim switch/cargo light works, except that the main headlights come on automatically once the truck is turned on, there is no way to control on/off from the switch even with the truck off, the switch should turn on/off the lights, but in my case, they stopped working.....very strange....
J R - First thing I would do is unplug the radio to rule out any issues from the install. If you're still having issues, I'd venture to guess your headlight relay or headlight switch went out. It's a smaller possibility but the turn signal switch could potentially be causing that issue as well, since the high beams run through it and it's technically a "multi-function" switch.
Can anyone gimme some insight i have with my 03 dakota slt and its the v8 model im having an issue with an aftermarket radio that i got and it has the same connections as the previous installed one from the previous owner but once the adapter harness connects it throws my whole truck out of what and basically make it unable to start at all anyone got any ideas or insight?
Question: I'm a new driver (young) and I got a new radio (pioneer) for Christmas. I noticed in the video you had to get the "amp" block I believe, the square thing. Do I have to buy that separate or can i use the one already in the car. Because I dint see it in the box of the new radio?
Thank you for this video. I have not attempted to install a stereo in any vehicle since the mid 80's. Needless to say things have changed a great deal since then. Going to install a new after market stereo made by Dual Electronics. Model XDM280BT. Anything I need to keep an eye on?
hi there , my Stereo does not work and i have to replace the fuse on the rear of my Stereo so do I have to remove the whole dashboard or just pull the Stereo and get out then replace the fuse please let me know as soon as you get my comment thanks a lot in advance.
Do you have that on top of the normal purple and the purple with black stripe? Should be 2 purple, 2 green, 2 gray, and 2 white. Each set is for a door speaker.
Did you have the factory speakers already in the truck before you put the new radio in ? I was told if I got that exact same one it wouldn't work with the factory speakers.
Tristen James Fannon - Ahhhh I'm not sure. I'd measure for you but I no longer have the truck. If I had to guess, id say about 4" tall and 8" wide for the filler panel hole. It's a din and a half not a double din. As far as the smaller hole INSIDE the filler panel, it's just standard radio size, I'm sure the manufacturers list heir dimensions.
Possibly, just look for the right part number, they may use a different brand though. I just usually do Besy Buy because they normally have everything I need under one roof.
everything in the truck is the same as far as I can tell in the truck between the 2 years, and I know that the stereo is, so there should be no problem using the 02 version in your 01
I don't see why not. I'd get everything local if possible like from Best Buy or something in case you have to exchange stuff but all the steps are the same.
So I'm going to be installing a radio in my Dakota for the first time so this video was great thanks! Just one question, about those black grounding wires. Did you just connect them together or did you ground them to the vehicle?
If you have a black wire to connect it to, then connect it to that. If the vehicle harness side has no black wire then you need to ground the deck harness side black wire to something metal.
My truck didn’t have steering wheel controls, but I installed the exact same radio on my ‘04 Jeep with steering wheel controls and was able to retain that function with the Axcess steering wheel control module. I have the video link here for the Jeep, just click the link to get to that video and then go to the video description and click the steering wheel control module. Should work for the Dakota was well. #5 in the video description 👍 ruclips.net/video/bP-qGK4DtBo/видео.html
my deck came with one yellow one red and one black but the aftermarket harness I bought from the electrical store had 2 yellows, 2 blacks and 1 red I shit you not, never seen that in my life so I just connected all of them and it works just fine but this is honestly a really helpful video thumbs up, I'm trying to install subs in my 02 dodge Dakota SLT but I can't find a spot to run power from my battery to my amp would anyone have any suggestions ?
+connor hourie as long as all the yellows are together and all the reds and all the blacks you should be fine. As far as running power, the easiest way is to buy a kit from Kicker or something that has an inline fuse holder and then connect that to your positive battery terminal and you can usually find a place in the firewall on the drivers side where there's either an existing hole or a rubber grommet you could poke a hole through and run the cable in down by your feet then pull the plastic floor edging up and run the cable under that to where ever you have the subs. The floor method is also a good way to run the signal wire from your deck to your amp. As far as a ground just run one from the amp to a rear seat bolt or something along those lines as long as it's a good, clean ground.
Fyi for the Infinity System: I was able to get a cheap amazon unit to play nice with the infinity amplifier by using the "accessory" output to send the turn on signal to the infinity amp. Be warned, the colors are different! I got my front speakers working, rear ones have yet to be powered up. (Maybe I'll do that when it's warmer).
They should both have an orange. If you look at the 8:38 mark, you can see orange on both. The one that plugs directly into the radio is orange with a white stripe. That connects to the solid orange one on the adapter harness.
Tony The Truck Guy I see that but one of my pieces that I ordered with the radio doesn’t have an orange wire. I ordered off of Crutchfield I didn’t think they would send me the wrong one
Hmm. I think I also ran into that when I put a radio in my Grand Cherokee. I believe I just didn’t hook up the orange wire. I would try connecting everything else then test to see if the radio works. Realistically, all you need it the red wire and yellow wire which is your constant and switched power wires, ground and then the speaker wires which aren’t orange.
@@big.wi1188 I almost gave up because I couldn't figure out enough of the lyrics, but I KNEW I had heard the song before. Did some more extensive listening and Googling, then found it! It's Shimmer, by Fuel, an alternative rock band from the 90's. Enjoy!
I just looked up the specs on it and they don't list anything like that. The screen only displays text so I'm sure it's nothing crazy. The only thing Sony lists about the screen is that it's an LCD.
Yeah that's pretty much the first step of any electrical but I tend to ignore it because I'm in a hurry and I know what I'm doing so I'm not touching hot wires together lol. I don't think you can do a double din on most Dodge's, pretty sure they are din and a half which is more difficult to come by.
I have a question for anyone that can answer my question I don't care what knowledge you got any help could be useful at this point so I installed a new aftermarket radio the original aftermarket radio that came with the truck when I got it never worked and I never figured out why all the fuses were perfectly fine I tested all of them all the connections look good well I put in this new one and it starts working as soon as I connect it and then I put it inside the dash and seal everything up and then I go to turn it on and it won't turn on at first it blew the fuse that's right behind the radio then it blew the fuse that's on the side panel near the driver side door now both those fuses are good I tested them they are good but it keeps blowing the interior lights fuse and I don't know why but the radio still will not turn on any ideas on what it could be
And I have a 2001 Dodge Durango by the way I forgot to mention that and I'm going to be replacing all of the butt connectors that were put on there by the previous owner because they look like crap and also the way they put the wires in there doesn't even look right I'm hoping that'll fix the problem but I have no idea because it keeps popping fuses mainly the interior light fuse
Would you recommend the sony radio, i got a radio from Walmart Its called car dual? i didnt do much research before buying it so im wondering if i should return it and get the same sony you installed
Dodge should have made that panel two pieces there a pain in the ass getting around the column and shifter. I'm doing a double din in my 04 now and nobody makes a panel to make the change so it's gotta be custom made. Looking really good but I'd pay $100 for a panel just to save time.

Hey bro, I got it to work but the stereo doesn't turn on and off with the ignition. I think I messed up the grounding.
There is two black wires coming from the car but only one black wire coming from my stereo.
What do I do with these?
Hook all 3 black wires together. Also make sure that you have your red wire connected to a switched 12v power source and yellow wire to 12v constant power source.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy ruclips.net/user/shortsuqyJ3Mwau5E?feature=share here bro I made a video to show you.
Take a look at my setup and see if you can see where I'm going wrong. Thanks
You have the later style single connector power plug for the stereo. Up until either 2002 or 2003 chrysler used the old style double connector grey and black that was used all the way back to the 1970s. I have the old style in my 2001 dakota(built august 2000)
Yeah I found out about the 2 different styles after making the video unfortunately lol
J R - Did you maybe forget to plug the headlight switch back in or not get it plugged in all the way?
thanks for the reply,
yes, everything was plugged back normal, my truck is 2x4 so only 3 cables were unplugged, the headlights/internal light/dim switch/cargo light works, except that the main headlights come on automatically once the truck is turned on, there is no way to control on/off from the switch even with the truck off, the switch should turn on/off the lights, but in my case, they stopped working.....very strange....
@@robertfarrand8863 Almost sounds like the power and grounds are backwards on new radio and it’s shorting out everything else
While you was in there did it appear to have room for a Double din unit?
AMatt416 I've never installed a double din so I can't give you a definite answer.
Is this the same installation steps for a double din stereo ? Can I take these steps to install a screen ?
poppinpurplepills I've never installed a double din or touch screen so I can't say but I don't think it would be too hard to figure out.
Ha, I had that same deck! I fricken loved it.
The metra harness u got from best buy?
Question: I'm a new driver (young) and I got a new radio (pioneer) for Christmas. I noticed in the video you had to get the "amp" block I believe, the square thing. Do I have to buy that separate or can i use the one already in the car. Because I dint see it in the box of the new radio?
My truck did not have an amp or steering wheel audio controls. What exactly are you trying to figure out?
Great video but you really didn't have to take that fully off I found it pretty easy to do with it just hanging there
Take what off?
Do you have to have the wire adapter or can you just hard wire the new radio harness in place of the old one.
You could just hardwire it. The adapter harness just makes it easier since you can match color to color.
Thank you for this video. I have not attempted to install a stereo in any vehicle since the mid 80's. Needless to say things have changed a great deal since then. Going to install a new after market stereo made by Dual Electronics. Model XDM280BT. Anything I need to keep an eye on?
So long as you follow the same basic steps as here with the proper adapters, you should be good 👍
hi there , my Stereo does not work and i have to replace the fuse on the rear of my Stereo so do I have to remove the whole dashboard or just pull the Stereo and get out then replace the fuse please let me know as soon as you get my comment thanks a lot in advance.
If you have an aftermarket radio that you can remove without pulling the dash panel, then that will be enough to replace the fuse.
Just a quick question
Where did you connect the black wire on the grey harness to the radio?
Black goes to black and if there isn't another black to connect then just ground the single black one to something metal.
What about the purple with yellow stripe wire???
Do you have that on top of the normal purple and the purple with black stripe? Should be 2 purple, 2 green, 2 gray, and 2 white. Each set is for a door speaker.
Tony The Truck Guy yeah i figured it out lol I was so frustrated lol I got it now thanks for answering though
Did you have the factory speakers already in the truck before you put the new radio in ? I was told if I got that exact same one it wouldn't work with the factory speakers.
Haha that's not true. This truck has factory speakers, it's just that aftermarket speakers can handle more amperage so they sound better.
PkwyDr alright cool ! thanks
Couldnt find any vids on how to install a stereo in 2001 str dodge durango speaker not working subs are but all 4 reg speaker not working nor tweeters
Check for power at the plug of the radio and see if speaker wires are getting power. Head unit may be junk.
everything matches up on mine but I have no power to my radio and can't figure out why. any ideas?
so do I need an install kit? it's basically the same set up as my 2003 Dodge durango
It should be damn near exactly the same as the Durango, but what do you mean by "install kit"? Just get the parts I listed.
About how large and wide would you say the radio ''hole'' was?
Tristen James Fannon - Ahhhh I'm not sure. I'd measure for you but I no longer have the truck. If I had to guess, id say about 4" tall and 8" wide for the filler panel hole. It's a din and a half not a double din. As far as the smaller hole INSIDE the filler panel, it's just standard radio size, I'm sure the manufacturers list heir dimensions.
Do happen to know the where you got the harness because I have already gotten the wrong one
Cameron Young Got mine at Best Buy but you should be able to buy it online if you Google the part number.
PkwyDr do you think you could get the wiring harness at Wal-Mart?
Possibly, just look for the right part number, they may use a different brand though. I just usually do Besy Buy because they normally have everything I need under one roof.
Will the antenna adapter and the wiring harness work for my 2001 Dodge Dakota? Both the antenna adapter and wiring harness have the year 2002 on them
everything in the truck is the same as far as I can tell in the truck between the 2 years, and I know that the stereo is, so there should be no problem using the 02 version in your 01
I don't see why not. I'd get everything local if possible like from Best Buy or something in case you have to exchange stuff but all the steps are the same.
Thanks guys
Thank you! This was extremely helpful
Glad to help!
Have issues with the front speakers. What is the color on the wire harness?
That I'm not sure on bud. I just match color to color on the harness lol. I'm sure a Google search may be of more help though.
would it be the same procedure for an '01 Durango SLT?
Pretty close. May need different part numbers for the filler panel and wiring adapters but the steps are the same.
Cool thanks bro
+PkwyDr would a single din flat screen fit
+cj cambell I don't think so, pretty sure Dodge uses a din and a half but I could be wrong.
I see. Thank you much
just wondering where did you get the filler pannel
Everything was from Best Buy
What size butt connector did you use? Thanks!!
The 20-18 gauge size. They are generally pink or red.
Thank you! I'm glad I found your video! Now I can install it myself!!
No problem at all, good luck with the install!
Thank you so much! This was so helpful.. I was looking ll over the place for a video on how to do this in my '03 Dakota. Perfect!
Where dod you end up putting the ground wire?
If there’s no black wire to connect to, I ground it to something metal in the dash. I THOUGHT there was a ground wire to hook it to though.
Thanks for the response!
No problem, let me know if there’s any other issues.
Do the steering wheel controls still work
My truck didn’t have steering wheel controls, but I installed the exact same radio on my ‘04 Jeep with steering wheel controls and was able to retain that function with the Axcess steering wheel control module. I have the video link here for the Jeep, just click the link to get to that video and then go to the video description and click the steering wheel control module. Should work for the Dakota was well. #5 in the video description 👍 ruclips.net/video/bP-qGK4DtBo/видео.html
Thanks for the vid man I just did this on my 02 Dakota sport
my deck came with one yellow one red and one black but the aftermarket harness I bought from the electrical store had 2 yellows, 2 blacks and 1 red I shit you not, never seen that in my life so I just connected all of them and it works just fine but this is honestly a really helpful video thumbs up, I'm trying to install subs in my 02 dodge Dakota SLT but I can't find a spot to run power from my battery to my amp would anyone have any suggestions ?
Fyi for the Infinity System:
I was able to get a cheap amazon unit to play nice with the infinity amplifier by using the "accessory" output to send the turn on signal to the infinity amp. Be warned, the colors are different! I got my front speakers working, rear ones have yet to be powered up. (Maybe I'll do that when it's warmer).
what color was the power wire to the factory amp
Awesome instructable man!!!
All of the harness I have looked for have a extra brown wire
Appreciate you brother🙏🏼
The 2 parts with the wires on them one had orange wire and one doesn’t what do I do?
Tony The Truck Guy thanks man
No problem, let me know if there’s any other issues 👍
thanks bro, i learned a bunch.
Thanks this really helped out a lot. If you don’t mind telling, what’s the song at 1:10?
Lol I’ll have to listen on my headset when I get home. Hard to tell because I turn it down as soon as I turn the ignition on.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy thanks, let me know if you find out lol. Rock and Roll is the best music to listen to while wrenching
@@big.wi1188 I almost gave up because I couldn't figure out enough of the lyrics, but I KNEW I had heard the song before. Did some more extensive listening and Googling, then found it! It's Shimmer, by Fuel, an alternative rock band from the 90's. Enjoy!
do you know the size of the radio example is it a 4.1 inch (16:9) high resolution
I just looked up the specs on it and they don't list anything like that. The screen only displays text so I'm sure it's nothing crazy. The only thing Sony lists about the screen is that it's an LCD.
Will that antenna adapter work with a 2001 Dakota?
***** can't promise anything but it should.
why does the harness come with 2 battery wires and 2 grounds
Mine only had the one ground. Yellow and red are for power, one is switched power, the other is constant power.
Do I really need the antenna adapter?
Yeah, it’s a different diameter.
Tony The Truck Guy
Oh ok, thanks!!
what year was the dakota you installed this in
2002
Nice video. What speakers do you have?
Just the stock ones. They do pretty good until volume is at 25-30 then they start to break up lol, good sound system for stock though.
You should definitely disconnect your battery though lol! Thanks for the video bro. I am going to install a double din. any suggestions?
Yeah that's pretty much the first step of any electrical but I tend to ignore it because I'm in a hurry and I know what I'm doing so I'm not touching hot wires together lol. I don't think you can do a double din on most Dodge's, pretty sure they are din and a half which is more difficult to come by.
I know I am going to need to modify the console.
@@derekloney5821 Either the radio itself is shorted internally and bad, or you have bare wires touching or some wires crossed most likely.
I already check to see if the wires are crossed and there not so I have two more things to check the bear wires you just said or a blown radio
Very helpful, thank you.
Does anyone know if the 03 intrepid is single or double connector?
Should be a single connector. Metra part # 70-6502 according to their website. Same part listed for all 3 trim levels of an Intrepid.
Thanks for the video. It helped a lot
Would you recommend the sony radio, i got a radio from Walmart Its called car dual? i didnt do much research before buying it so im wondering if i should return it and get the same sony you installed
Yes go get a Sony. I owned a Dual and basically you get what you pay for. I go Pioneer all the way!
AMatt416 Okay, Thank you!
Tony the one handed man ..lol
i take it you didnt have a factory amp in the truck?
Nope, unless it was hidden somewhere. Wasn't under the seats though.
Dude u like hail to the king by avenged sevenfold too that's freaking awesome
Dodge should have made that panel two pieces there a pain in the ass getting around the column and shifter. I'm doing a double din in my 04 now and nobody makes a panel to make the change so it's gotta be custom made. Looking really good but I'd pay $100 for a panel just to save time.
Metra doesn’t make a double din panel? I know they do for the Chevy trucks.
Bro I’m struggling with the disconnecting the lights part
With which part? The red tab?
I love you . its only your vid out the on this
Awesome thanks
