Thank you Ana for sharing! I used to read a lot when I was in high school, but then I got so busy in college and reading kind of phased out from my life, I started reading consistently again in December 2020, at first it was very hard for me to focus and keep reading and I was kind of forcing myself into it, but I somehow built up the habit by starting with 8 pages a day, somedays I would read more but not always, this way I kind of made the goal very small so by achieving it each time I got more confident to continue next day, I added 5 pages to my routine every month and now I am reading around 25,30 pages a day and don't have intentions to go up anymore (although I read more than that most of the times, the point is that to keep the number in a range so that you can stay committed to every day, not every other day)! For me setting up and sticking to a quantitative goal works better! (By the way, for some books that I find harder to read, I try to go easy on myself and reduce my number of daily pages)

I love this! I have really struggled with the pandemic and all the stresses of my daily responsibilities with caretaking which have pulled my focus from reading consistently (also, I’m totally burnt out from university studying). I did read Lettres à un jeune poète en français par Rilke. I broke those down into one letter per reading session. I documented words I didn’t know (in french). Which I really enjoyed. My plan is to reread it now that I’ve read through it once in french. I tend to reread french texts to thoroughly immerse myself in the writing. I recently ordered the paintings in proust and gate of lilacs to accompany my Proust journey.
I keep a notepad note in my phone to document when I’ve read and also in my daily hobonichi planner (any excuse to use a fountain pen).
I would love to make one suggestion - would it be possible for you to list the resources you mentioned in the description of your videos? Sometimes I’m not near a pen and paper to note them and want to easily reference the resources later :)
Also, another helpful tip to get back into reading is to reread a favorite book. It helps to remind you why you love to read :) someone suggested that to me.
Happy Friday - yours in Bruin Pride,
    Jacqueline

Makes my heart sing to know you’ve been immersing yourself in French reading, in Proust and in Rilke! What a worthwhile combination! I am not familiar with gate of lilacs and will have to explore - thank you for that! Side note, lilacs are my favoriteeeeeee flower. And I so feel you re being burnt out from academic studies. I have felt that way since law school, but I find myself oscillating between feeling burnt out and wanting to so desperately find my way back to the youthful enthusiasm and sense of belonging to an academic community. More hopefully in a letter I’ll write to you!

@@Beatlesfan1993 currently about halfway through Rules of Civility by Amor Towles - very well written and descriptive, and would be of particular interest to those who have an affinity toward New York. The writer does a great job describing not only characters, but the circumstances and surroundings of living in NYC.

Great video Ani!! For me, putting my phone away is a big one. Sometimes I’m able to ignore, but if it becomes too much of a distraction, I put it away completely. It’s crazy to think that at one time we didn’t have these little devices at all and I remember spending hours a day on my summer breaks just reading with no disturbances.
