It might be interesting to consider the effect on Virginia Woolf of the Spanish Flu pandemic, which caused so much illness and death at the end of the war and beyond. Had Mrs. Dalloway been ill with the dreaded flu, and recovered? Was this partly why venturing out to buy flowers was so delightful and liberating an act for her? Indeed, perhaps “ Mrs. Dalloway”is a far richer vision of that day in 1923, because it is not only about the aftermath of war, but about the aftermath and recovery from the deadly Spanish Flu as well. From such a reading, the novel speaks rather directly to our own moment in time. (As a side note: it is remarkable how the Spanish Flu, with its possibly 50 million deaths, is rarely mentioned by readers of post WWI fiction and poetry. Perhaps a fuller embrace of history would greatly enlighten our understanding and appreciation of that era’s literature . Thanking covid for this insight!) And thank you for your comments about “Mrs Dalloway.” Michael Cunningham’s “The Hours” is a fascinating re-writing of the story. “To the Lighthouse” is the Woolf work that most resonates with me… after “A Room of Ones Own” of course.

Thank you for this observation and note! I happened to overlook the timeline with regard to the Spanish Flu, and I would agree it adds an even more relevant lens looking at it through those pages of history and what we’ve lived through collectively this past year. I have yet to explore to the lighthouse - that shall be next! Thank you for the recommendations!

Loved this review, personally, I had such a hard time reading Mrs. Dalloway for many years but the perspective of stepping into the ordinary and lived moments is pushing me to give it one last attempt before I fully write it off. Thank you!

Great review i just listened to the audiobook. I loved it. I thought I might struggle to read the book I haven't read any Woolf before. It is a very challenging listen but once I got into it I followed it fine. Its definitely not for everyone. I'll probably get the book. I think I'll be able to get into her other works now.

Hi Gary! Thank you, that’s lovely to know and I’m happy you found it doable. What do you think you’ll read next?

@@anielizaveta I think I'll tackle the waves next. I'm going to have a little break. I'm reading some Barbara Pym at the moment Crampton Hodnet and Enid Blyton The Faraway Tree. Completely different to Mrs Dalloway. I recently just finished Anne Of Green Gables I adored it.

Skipping video is a bit annoying, sorry.
VW is a hard writer to follow. There is a stream of consciousness and the characters floating in and out.
I had read this book about ten years ago and thought I should give it another read,so to speak, and to be honest I haven't changed my mind. I am still not a VW can and I hAve read all her books.....however,if anything: if I had to choose one it would be MrsDalloway to read yet again !
    Thanks.
