Thanks for you analysis. Especially the beginning where you suppose the characters are outside time and eternal. I read this with Proust's Swann's Way and was surprised by the congruence between the two books, not in style or form, but in relation to time and entropy. I really loved it too.
Thank you for your analysis! And actually (as we "speak") I am constructing my annotated bibliography for my seminar paper that I am writing on The Waves… Amazing piece of literature, I agree! Welcome to the wonderful world of Virginia Woolf! You should read To the Lighthouse next! "Time Passes" is incredible and the topic of my other seminar paper this semester!
The Waves is my favourite book of all time. I've read it at least 6 times - the first time was about 20 years ago, and the last time was april 2021. When I moved to the UK from Australia for 18 mths I took only two books with me, and The Waves was one of them. It is so close to my heart. I can also pick it up and read any page at random with pleasure. It is said that Percival is based on Virginia's brother Thoby.
Hey I just read this book. The Waves is incredible but not the book I'd have started with! I'm in awe of how well constructed the novel is, and how Percival's death so dramatically affected everyone. You know exactly who they are and who they're becoming and have become. I can't understand how she pulls this out of her mind, but I love it! To The Lighthouse is another excellent work, as well as Mrs Dalloway. Such craft!
Thank you for this! I'm really looking forward to _The Waves._ I've been working through Woolf's later books, and _Orlando_ is up next, then _The Waves._ The year of the Woolf has been amazing for me so far.
@@EveryoneWhoReadsitMustConverse I just read _To the Lighthouse_ last week. Just remarkable work. So much heart and art. I think you'll love it. I really didn't expect to feel so much anxiety reading about a family's stay at a beach house. I did a second read of _Mrs. Dalloway_ last month, and it surprised me how much I'd missed in my first read, particularly how the post-WWI trauma permeates the city and the people's interactions. It's like a perfectly sunny day, but you feel this darkness hanging over you, following you everywhere.
@@Ematched the collective trauma of WW1 is something that is immensely interesting to me as far as how it has shaped our collective perception of what humanity is. I can't wait to read more Woolf, she was such a powerhouse.
Wow! You’re a brave man to start here! I’m working up to it. I’ve read Mrs Dalloway several times, read The Hours, saw the movie, but just last month listened to the audio book and was struck by how many times she mentions water and waves. She wrote short books but I see new connections every time I read one. Deb
I am so glad that you liked this book. I would have never thought to suggest "The Waves" as a way to get into Woolf. But then again, I guess, with what you typically read, maybe I would have recommended this one haha She really was brilliant. She had such great insight on the way the mind can shape ones perspectives of the world. Great analysis! 😎
My first Woolf was The Waves too....must admit I had to restart it after 100 pages of a buddy read, as I wasn't getting it at all...but after this I simply loved it ...and rate it among my top ten of all time ...not a wrong word ...and groundbreaking in form and themes .
When are you changing your channel name to “The Boy Who Cried Woolf”? Thanks for sharing this, Noah, excellent discussion about an extraordinary work. While so many of Woolf’s characters inhabit a particular milieu, she really draws us to recognize use the connections that exist across humanity. Her use of symbolism is fantastic, particularly with how she directs us to time: the chimes of Big Ben in Mrs. Dalloway and the sun here. Best, Jack
Haha! The Waves have definitely pushed me towards a trip To the Lighthouse. But, if I get sucked down a Woolf whirlpool, we'll see what happens with the channel name 😝 What a perceptive writer! I am in awe of her so far
One of the best reviews of The Waves by Virginia Woolf that I have ever seen, thank you.
Omg thank you! It blew my mind 😝
This review/analysis encapsulated The Waves so incredibly well- I really enjoyed your interpretation of it.
Thank you Joan! What a cool book, I am happy you resonate with my thoughts here 🙏

Thanks Ian! I tried my best on this, my first Woolf. I have since read Mrs Dalloway as well
This was great. Very well explored. This buddy read was amazing, looking forward to the next 😊
What an awesome read, for sure. My first Woolf a mind-blow 😎 we rock the buddy reads for sure! Thanks Yasmin!
I'm really looking forward to reading this later in the year. Thanks for talking about it. This will be helpful when I get into it.
My pleasure, AJ, I will be looking for your thoughts on it 😊🙏
I really appreciate this review. I've had a copy for over 20 years but have never read it. I'll give it another go
Very cool, I am beginning my next Virginia Woolf now- Mrs Dalloway

I have both, Orlando will be my next 😎

Great discussion. We will be doing Mrs. Dalloway in a couple weeks!
Very cool! I had no idea the depth of Woolf's perception. Now I am eager to dive into more 😊
@@EveryoneWhoReadsitMustConverse it'll be my first! I'm very excited.
Wow - You started with her most experimental novel - I also happen to think it’s her best book
I have since read Mrs Dalloway and love her intelligence and style. The Waves is my fave of the 2 👍
Woolf used to be my most-hated author, but then I got a little older and realised that I quite like her stuff :D
She definitely has her own thing going, but that is what I like most in authors. Unique perspectives/storytelling.
