Tie the maribou feathers in by the butts. That gives the fly superior volume and action in the water. Dennis Dickson, Fisheries Biologist and Stilly guide taught me the difference. Trim with the scissors a few fibers from each side of the butt. Do not strip the fibers as that leaves the center quill slick and reduces the hold of the thread. George L Herter showed that technique in his fly tying book.
