Beginner's Fly Tying Series - the Marabou Spey

The Marabou Spey is a great fly to introduce you to winding hackle and dubbing bodies. It's a very effective steelhead pattern and every angler should have some of these in their fly boxes.

The hook is a traditional style of salmon hook that's probably been made for close to two centuries. This style of salmon hook is not that far removed from that of a circle hook in the shape of its bend. They hold on to fish quite well, otherwise they wouldn't still be around after all this time. The circle hook concept is probably 7,000 - 8,000 years old.
