    Born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks, and weighing just over half a kilogram, Derek lost his sight as a result of the oxygen therapy required to save his life, and his development was affected too. As this became clear, it also became apparent that Derek began life with a precocious fascination for music and sound. He began to teach himself to play the piano at the age of two, and by the age of four, had taught himself to play a large number of complex pieces. With no visual models to guide him, his technique was chaotic, and even his elbows would frequently be pressed into service as he strove to reach intervals beyond the span of his tiny hands!
    At this time, his enormous potential was recognised by Adam Ockelford, then music teacher at Linden Lodge School for the Blind in London. Adam and Derek began to work together weekly and then daily, in an extensive programme of tuition that was to last for several years. Painstakingly Derek acquired the foundations of technique that were necessary for him to move forward.
    His natural affinity for jazz soon became evident; together with his improvisatory talents, absolute pitch, ability to play in any key, and flair for performing in public!
    Derek first shot to fame when he was nine, playing with the Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra at the Barbican.
    Many TV appearances followed, in the UK and overseas, including Japan, Germany and Australia, and three times on CBS’s prestigious ‘60 Minutes’ programme in the USA. Derek Paravicini has performed in venues ranging from Ronnie Scott’s renowned jazz club in London, to the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and in Phoenix, Arizona, for Mohammad Ali. He has performed twice at Buckingham Palace. In 2011, Derek played ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and a piano concerto written specially for him, at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.
    Derek's talent, love of music, and - above all - the ability to communicate through sound means he will continue to thrill audiences for years to come in the UK and abroad.

    What really amazes me is how he finds the notes without seeing them. I can't find the damn keys when I'm looking straight at them.

    • @Brukernavnn
      @Brukernavnn 8 лет назад +10

      People with perfect pitch know any note just from hearing them, it's pretty cool. Mozart, Beethoven, Michael Jackson and Jimi Hendrix all had it.

    • @mattlm64
      @mattlm64 7 лет назад +50

      It's not recognising notes he is talking about, it's finding the keys. There are many blind pianists. I suppose they just get used to it, and once they know where the keys are they form a good spacial understanding of the key locations without sight.

      That's why you're supposed to rehearse mostly scales... If you can't play without looking at the keys, you can't read the notes...

      You get that with practise

    • @JuanHerrero
      @JuanHerrero 7 лет назад +7

      Practice, and tons of it! I can type, both QWERTY and and the Russian layout, without mistakes or looking at the keyboard, be it with two hands, one hand, or just a finger. But give me a computer keyboard with different size keys or layout to what I am accustomed, and I will be very lost for a while.
      Re-learning QWERTY, from looking at the keyboard as I typed to not doing it was the hardest. After that I picked up Cyrillic very fast, but then I made a conscious effort not to look at the keyboard.

    Ragtime turned into Jazztime with your interpretation and arrangement of The Entertainer.
    The Beethoven style overlays from other piano geniuses was the most impressive improvised performance I've ever witnessed.
    Your style overlays of various performers on the great standards and pop/rock tunes is incredible !

    A Savant like Derek here, is able to reveal to us by his playing. A glimpse of the all mighty himself, God! Derek brings me to tears almost every single time he plays the piano. I myself am a professional musician. I have been playing music for over 25yrs, and without a disabilities. I can honestly say that Derek is probably one of the most talented piano players to have ever stepped foot on this earth. Derek keep on expressing the gift that God himself gave to you!! Thank for sharing your talents with us!

    I'm sitting here, obviously listening to Derek's playing, but at the same time thinking about how the human brain works (I have very little idea by the way). So many disabilities, but one part of his brain is so advanced, so developed, that he can play so amazingly. What could we humans do if we could use our total brain capacity. Read some of the comments below, all positive. But a Big Up for mum for all her support 👍

    Wow! He's cranked it up a couple of notches more ... just amazing ... incredible.
    The human brain is unbelievable.
    I have studied the Bible a great deal and have concluded that Savants give us a window into the capabilities of the brain before Adam's fall into sin.
    If that is right, we would be able to perform at this level in all areas of music, the arts and the sciences.
    I am so thankful that having received Jesus as Lord and Savior, I have this to look forward to in the ages to come.
    Bless you Derek

  • @jchuggin
    @jchuggin 11 лет назад +11

    I don't agree with you. I understand how you feel but I think that your opinion has its roots in the way he looks when he plays. His hands don't flourish very much in comparison to alot of performance musicians, but this, I believe, is due to his blindness. To him, it makes absolutely no difference how high or dance-like his hands look, just the sound it makes and if you go ahead and play the video again (this time without watching the video) you'll find that his playing is very expressive.

    • @mudkip_btw
      @mudkip_btw 7 лет назад

      jchuggin Yep, technically waving your hands around to put it like that adds nothing. It's important that your sound is spot on, and you achieve what you want through your playing

      Our consciousness exists in the 4th dimension where time doesn't exist--however, for the majority of us, our normal 3D lives we only get a limited access to consciousness because our physical bodies (senses) and Ego handicap and distract us from accessing it. However, Derek appears to have extremely heightened consciousness that is able to tap into "source" outside of our time and space with very little interference in between. Like Einstein said, time does not exist, it is merely a convincing illusion. Everything that could possibly exist exists in the fourth dimension, and Derek is simply channeling this through his mind and into his body to us in "real time". A God-given gift and the closest glimpse into the 4th dimension that we may ever see. His mind needs to be studied by science.

      And yes, I mean't to write "mouth" instead of "moth" but quite frankly I like the look of that mistake :P
