Nice build. I'm considering the Q7 as car camper/mild overland build. I've owned B5s, B8s, C6, C7s so I know the quattro capabilities. But for some reason the Q7 wasn't a consideration before. LR4, Touareg and Cayennes with low gear were shortlisted.
The older ones with the lockers and low range are more suited to off-roading technically. However the diesel in the Q7 and the 8spd trans from the 13 and up gen makes a solid combo. The extra space is super nice too.
Awesome build and super detailed video, thank you! Would love to hear more about why the Q7, what other vehicles you considered, general reliability, and what are some things you like or dislike with it for overlanding / off-roading. I am in market for a rig and would appreciate more details. Thanks again!
I'm an Audi tech, so I have a ton of experience with this chassis. Wanting to stick with the brand and see what it can do was also another factor. We started off with the Q5, but found it wasn't as suitable for off-roading as the Q7 is. We still have the Q5, it's just lowered now. As far as a true overlander it's pretty perfect, fuel efficient, comfy and lots of room. It can do foresty roads all day. The more serious off-roading we run into the lack of a low range gear and some parts are not as robust as other brands, or lack of aftermarket support. Axles is a big one
@@wrenchparty Thanks so much for the speedy and detailed response! Love that you wanted to go a different way for a vehicle and stay within the Audi family! Forest service roads are mostly what I'll be driving so a Q7 might fit the bill for me then! Last 2 questions, did you ever think about the supercharge gasoline v6 instead of the TDI? I go back in forth with it. How does the quattro/transmission manage in incline/lower speed without a low range gear? Thanks a bunch! Excited for more of your content to come.
@@Justoltj1358 Would highly recommend to go for the 2013 and up TDI. The 8spd trans is much better then the earlier 6spd. As well as all the issues corrected wit the chassis. It also has the gen 2 diesel motor. The diesel and the 8spd trans gives it the ability to go pretty darn slow and crawl up hills with ease. I've seen videos with the 3.0 supercharged offroading and they have the rev to make power. It makes a pretty rough experience with lots more wheel spin
If anyone wants anything else covered, drop a comment and i'll make another video!
Hello, are you using the original shock absorbers or special ones? Offroad?
@@touyaTheBeautifulRat Still oem shocks and springs, looking at putting softer Touareg ones in the front eventually

@@wrenchparty Thanks for all the details and advice here! I'll definitely target a 2013 - 2015 TDIs then! Keep up the awesome content. Cheers!
Love the video and the car. What are details on the rims? Want to get the same ones for my wife's q7. Thanks!
Thanks! They are Black Rhino Havasu's 18x8.5 et42 or 45 (only 1 option at the time) with a 15m spacer to clear the caliper
