Is Forefoot Running Faster than Heel Strike Running? YES!

  • Another report has found yet another reason forefoot running is faster than heel strike running and that is due to better leg spring compression, which means the leg works better as an energy-saving spring if a forefoot strike is engaged. If a heel strike is engaged, the leg quickly becomes an ineffectual, sloppy spring that is also over-burdened by competing forces that are amplified with increased running speed.

I hadn’t realised there was a debate, I just thought people who landed on their heels were poor runners. Note: sound volume of foot fall equates to energy loss. On any running machine in a gym, one can tell the people that land on their heels, they are loud.

How is forefoot running compared to midfoot for speed and distance?

Before you get to midfoot your picking either heel or forefoot first.

This is not the reason. Natural elasticity is a contributive, but the main reason the forefoot’s generally faster is because it’s usually associated with footfall closer to the center of mass. Acceleration can’t begin in the stride until the hips pass the forefoot according to physics, so the less overstride = less time to falling forward & accelerating. If we reach out onto the forefoot overstride will occur, & the quicker acceleration advantage isn’t there. The closer to hip landing’s also the reason for less associated injury risk, & that is squandered as well if we reach out 🏃🏼‍♀️no matter what part of the foot lands first.
