  • In today's video, I would like to discuss a selection of the most interesting and impressive watches of Japan - a nation known for its precision engineering. These watches range from rugged and every-day watches to the cutting edge of engineering and craftsmanship. These include watches from Seiko, Grand Seiko, Citizen and Credor.

    I wish watchmakers in general would put their power reserve indicators on the display back of the watch and not the dial. It just clutters the dial and throws off the balance visually.

    • @meson183
      @meson183 6 лет назад +1

      On the whole you may be right. I do like a nice clean dial. However, there are always exceptions. For me, one would be the _Oris Big Crown Pro-Pilot Calibre 111_ . There are bound to be others. It's always interesting hunting down the exceptions.

      @jimbegin6554 6 лет назад

      Add to the Oris 110 Series, as mentioned. Tudor North Flag, the power reserve is balanced by the date aperture. I suppose it would take a fair redesign to ‘mind’ the rotor to have the indicator on the reverse?

      There are watches with PR on the back but that means taking it off to see it. I have 2 watches with PR and I quite like the complication. Each to their own I guess.

    Another great presentation. I have to say I have been thinking about spending $7000 for a watch and the Grand Seiko Spring Drives are very alluring. My brother-in-law bought a Rolex for his son for his college graduation and when I saw it I thought it was beautiful. He did Patty $7000 for it, but I thought it was not something out of this world. When I heard about the Grand Seiko and the technology inside the watch I said, " this is the watch I would spend up to $8000 for. "

      Why? You know shit about wacthes...I have more than 100 watches in my collection, and seikos are the worst, they always broken,,, and when repair, they need very expensiove and deep repairs, even some aprts ahve to be swapped... I have sold them all, i only have one and iam rtying to sale the shit out, on the contrary all my vintage watches work great, some they have more than alf of century and theya re easly more accuirate than a seiko.Put them on the wriost during a week seiko will be less accurate..they are having too many aprts, and some parts are plastic...
      I have been in Japan recently and they said, seiko, export to ocident, we buy swiss. And they smiled. They just control, idiots like you.

    Greetings from Guatemala. Sir you just blew my mind with that Jaw-dropping Creedor. I really like the fact that you included a citizen here especially one I hadnt seen before and a market pice not just a Concept Show Queen. Also didn't even know about the GS crono. What a great piece. Food for thought since I don't want more than 12 watches in my collection now you've given me two more competitors on that list. Great video have a great Sunday.

    The first watch I ever owned was a hand wound Seiko with 17 Jewels. My father bought it for me in Singapore in 1966 when I was 4 years old. I’m 56 years old now, still have the watch and it still works fine. It has been serviced once in 52 years. I think that says it all when it comes to the legendary build quality of Seiko watches.

    Dear Armand the watch Guy , Another excellent video . I notice all your videos tend to be on traditional style automatic watches , have you thought of reviewing the likes of the Casio G-shock watches ? These are innovative and the MR-G range are price equivalent to the likes of Tudor watches, granted a totally different market , but as a watch fan I still loves these functional watches as well , having grown up with G-shocks they still are very dear to me, indeed this led to my interest in "proper" watches. My wish list being MR-G G1000 and a Tudor Black bay, your thought on these two would interest me. Also a link to the sites you mention would be very handy, thanks for the excellent videos , keep up the good work.

    It would have been nice to include the Seiko 6139 (arguably the world's first automatic chronograph with column wheel and vertical clutch), the Orient line of watches which were quite popular in the 1970s when I was growing up, and the Citizen 8110 movement (competitor to the 6139). Perhaps in a follow on video.

      Orient is not seiko.And seiko dont owns orient.
      . STOp this imebeciality.
      Epson is just a shareholder, and Epson owns seiko. And recently onws Orient too.This is has to do with a japanese strategy, to make a only group, to control watch quality , prices and to avoid, dispersion. Like they did in swiss,

    That Credor is a stunning piece of work. The "river" between the bridges that you mentioned at 21:51 is the stem of the bellflower cut into the spring barrel. There are further cutouts in the bridges to represent the leaves, one of which reveals the glide wheel.

    Armand, very interesting video. It's clear that Japanese watchmaking is on a par with Swiss matchmaking and may well be ahead. Remember at one time both French and British watches were ahead of Swiss, and Rolex only finally made in house movements in 2004 (buying main subcontractor - this is well known). I am thinking about adding a Grand Seiko to my collection and trying to decide if the technical excellence overcomes the slight lack of cachet (on the high street) against a Rolex, Patek or say Omega. BTW while I recognise the fantastic success of Rolex, it is victim of its own success and deserves the slightly mischievous Texas Timex moniker. Armand, your presentation of the Credor was nearly as impressive as the watch!

    What an education. I'm afraid I had almost sneared at Citizen as a brand although I have to take my had off to the Eco-Drive technology. Who would of thought they produce a super thin dress watch. Having said that I bet they don't sell that many as it has the wrong brand on the face, but wow what a watch! I have only just had Credor brought to my attention and would one day love to own one especially as such low volumes are produced each year. However would I buy one over a 'cheaper' Lange! hmmm now that's a toughy...

      The Veri-Thin Solar tech was the reason that they purchased Bulova. So, if you buy an Eco-Drive watch, you're purchasing what may be the last American in-house horological innovation.

However (I guess you knew that was coming - and with tongue firmly in cheek), Japanese precision engineering is somewhat better than either your spelling or the spellchecker you use ("....precisionn engineering."). No offence meant and hopefully none taken - just my own pedantic ways coming to the fore!! Keep up the brilliant content regardless of my nitpicking.

    what a joke. nobody in their right minds would buy a seiko chrono over a rolex daytona, even at the price point difference. even if you dont want to spend daytona money that is Batman price range and maybe even a Hulk second-hand. Also the credor - $50K for a fucking credor? you can get an ALS 1815 chronograph or even a second-hand Datograph for that price. There are also plenty of amazing watches from patek, AP, VC, and JLC at that price point. Those aforementioned watchmakers also have dress watches at half the price of that credor. are you really suggesting that you would chose that credor over those manufactures offerings? if you are buying a credor for $50k you should really be checked into a mental asylum.

    This is an excellent survey course in Japanese watchmaking. And it also confirms what I think is its biggest shortcoming: unimaginative and monotonous design. It is no coincidence that not one of the Japanese watches shown in this review has either Roman or Arabic numerals.
    Psychologists call this "arithmophobia" or fear of numbers. Go thru Seiko's online catalog and look at all of the 100s of different watches they make. You'll notice numerals are (with some exceptions) missing from their faces - across the board. Instead, from top to bottom, little batons for hour markers. How repetitious and uninteresting! So what is going on? Simple. This eliminates one great problem for the Japanese who make these watches - namely Western typography and design.
    That’s one reason Honda, Nissan and Toyota all use California firms to design many of their cars. Japanese watchmakers should follow suit before too many of their potential customers notice and start to yawn.

    • @uyt6uyt5
      @uyt6uyt5 6 лет назад +1

      Two of the watches shown use Arabic numerals on the dial. A significant number of Seiko, Orient and Citizen watches have Roman or Arabic numerals on their dials. Additionally, baton markers are used extensively in Swiss branded watches. They are widely considered more elegant than numerals. Check out how many V/C watches use baton markers.

    Great video. I agree with your choices to feature here. I especially love the Credor with that beautifully decorated movement. Plus the idea of a manually-wound Spring Drive movement takes away some of the sting from mechanical watch snobs looking to diminish Spring Drive and Seiko's place in horology.
