- On May 14, 2016, about 1647 eastern daylight time, an experimental amateur-built Pitts S-2SW, N24CD, collided with terrain during an aerial display at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK), Atlanta, Georgia. The commercial pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was destroyed by impact forces and a postcrash fire. The airplane was registered to a corporation and was operated by the pilot under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 91 as an air show flight. Day, visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, and no flight plan was filed. The local flight originated from PDK about 1642.
Probable Cause and Findings
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The pilot's failure to maintain proper positioning during performance of an aerobatic maneuver and his subsequent failure to discontinue maneuvering when unable to reestablish proper positioning during a steep descent toward the ground

Very professionally handled by the Airboss who kept his cool during this tragedy. Requiescat in Pace Greg.
He lived down the road from my other house, he always flew the river for practice, and he always enjoyed watching him.
?! It rubs the lotion on it's skin....
What's with all the hate here? This was probably one of the worst days of these guys lives and you're all keyboard warriors pointing out minor things and bad mouthing everything. These guys probably all knew the pilot and had a million things going through their heads while still trying to coordinate everything. RIP
might have something to do with the fact that there's no video, just an audio recording?
It's a RUclips tradition.....
Mgreen... I see zero hate here. Perhaps you're overly sensitive and complain about others.
What the hell are you talking about, Pythagoras?
There’s a contingent of Dan Gryder haters. They tend to flower every few weeks, before rotting away, only to regrow. What ‘ya gonna do?
I got photos of Greg doing his last pre-flight. After that, I hopped in my car to head home. A few minutes later word of the crash hit the local radio news. Feels eerie to look at those photos. There one minute, gone the next.
I’ve witnessed two airshow crashes, it’s the silent lull for 20-45 minutes after a crash that is the most traumatic as an aviator airshow spectator, you know the frequencies are frantic but from our end it’s dead and quiet and you just know there’s loss of life. RIP
Never forget when a 4 ship, became a 2 ship. Then, At my hometown airshow on saturday, the 2 ship became a 1 ship.....that 1 ship put a hell of performance on Sunday.....(he lost his 3 buddies but flew a single ship like a champ for the Sunday show) blue Angel's cancelled saturday but everyone got back in for free sunday
@robertd7073 huh? "5 sHiP gOT 5 pOoPpiE iN mE pAnTs" Whats the point of replying or commenting if no one knows what the hell you are talking about. This isn't Twitter. You have plenty of characters allowance to do better.

I thought I saw a moment of elevator flutter and a moment of attempted pitch control before an out of control impact to ground at high speed. Most unfortunate. My sympathies and condolences to everyone.
I lived real close to that airport for 12 years and went to a couple of the airshows there. I never witnessed an incident, but did hear of them over those years. A bunch of adventurous, kind of crazy souls sharing their love for their planes and for aviation in general. It can be a little dangerous sometimes, but the love far outweighs any little fears there might be.
Pretty sure that DC-3 was Dan Gryder
Sounded like it, unfortunately. I’d rather listen to nails across a chalk board, or a toothing baby cry all night.
@@RetreadPhoto That dude's become as popular as a rug burn! 😅
I look forward to not watching his video about it
Since this was 2016 I doubt he'll be doing a video about it.@mikebarillari2202
@@OhMySack I only needed to watch two or three of his videos to know he’s not worth wasting my time on, ditto for any of his sycophant hometown fans, who clearly can barely spell aviation.
By Everybody's reactions you can tell that pilot was well loved and respected
So tragic, God rest him
RIP
Yes
Ooooh the elusive 380 degree wind. 5:36 . Its a bummer. I got to see these guys shortly before the accident.
I laughed at that too. Is that code for 020? Lol
The DC-3 pilot sounds like Dan Gryder, and that's the type he flies.
I just watched the Blue Angels and the F22 Raptor at the Sanford Airshow along with a daring small Pitt Performance by Mike Guillen
Absolutely flawless performances ❤
Mike is the best my favorite pilot
Michael Goulian flies an Extra, not a Pitts.
Sad, I hate hearing when these guys crash. They are experienced but we all can have a bad day.
😢 so heart breaking
Indeed
Lived in the Doraville-Chamblee area for most of my life since 1961. PDK is my backyard & I hate to see this happen. Prayers for the family.
such a professional air bos, very sad Blue sky's Greg.
Another horrible crash sad.
Was that Dan Gryder in the DC-3? Sounded like him.
Could someone please help me understand what Prestige 1, 2, and 3 were doing? Sounded like they took off, and either landed, and took off again, or were doing touch, and go's.
Helicopter pleasure flights
Prestige helicopters does helicopter instruction and tour flights. They were probably doing tour flights that day. Prestige 1 was actually my instructor there. They take off directly off the apron near 16, a little ways away from the accident runway
Thank you, both!
Sad…
Yeah…
Is that Dan Gryder in the Dc3?
That's what I thought!
I was right where this was being filmed from in the Epps hangar.
Plenty of hate here….. how sad.
That scream.....
Whoever posted this, this accident happened in May of 2016.
Yes, May 14th 2016, as written in the video description.
@@gregoryscott7088 Thank you, I was saved from say it. 👍
What was the pilots name?
Greg Connell
im only 30 minutes or so from this airport and didnt hear about this. This is news to me and is sad. Anyone know how this ocured or no one knows the ''error'' that led to this?
My only guess would be he came out of his 'spiral dive' late, and couldn't pull up in time. The aircraft that crashed was 'diving down' while rotating (doing barrel-rolls strait down essentially), when he leveled off to pull up, he was possibly to low to successfully make that pull-up.
Why is there literally always a screaming woman in the background of anything dramatic ?? RIP to that Pilot :(
Probably the pilots wife.
DC 3 is Dan Greider.
As a retired ATC. I’ve been present at several shows where the airspace is released to an air boss. These guys are the worst. Poor phraseology and bad judgement
I like how they call the pilots by their names
Same here. Airshow turned over to air boss at Selfridge. Air boss froze when a T-33 crashed.
Air shows are a recipe for disaster from the get go
We had a clown of an air boss cause a midair at Dallas Executive a couple of years back.
As a non-pilot and non-ATC, flight simulator and viewer of these videos only, I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that the language of the air boss was on the loosey-goosey side. Thought it was just my lack of knowledge.
Prestige is a helicopter tour operator…
Thanks for clarifying that.
@@lindaschad9734 yes, rides during a show is no longer permitted. They think it is a factor in the B17 / P63 crash in Texas.
Is that DC3 Dan Gryder? Sure sounds like him. Probable Cause!
0:14 for a second there, I didn't think we would have a random screaming woman in the video...thank god I was proven wrong
The law of averages is a thang.
I was at the Niagara Falls air show in the late 80s when 2 Thunderbirds or another group jets collided doing a loop, terrible
This air boss was the voice of reason and as a cop we appreciate a calm steady voice when our asses are on the line. Rip.
Just don't kill innocents. Way too many aircraft-related disasters lately that didn't need to be.
🙏🙏
As someone with an aerobatic pilot intention.. this is TERRIFYING to see
Another defective Hover-Module.
The big blow up Gary Greg down ???"
I don't operating hours for aircraft controllers but that has to be one exhausting job lol
I see this occurred in 2016.........unfortunate.....8 years ago.
Flight plan...flight plan..flight plan. And stick to it. No ad lib.
Rip

Lotsa bla bla bla in the comments.......but no fukin explanation why the plane crashed.........
Maybe you watch the video and read the captions. If that’s too much work for you, I’ll sum it up… airplane hit the ground.
and this is why I never go to airshows....too many people crashing and dying
Your comment makes no sense. It’s like saying you never go outside cuz you might get hit by a car. (The odds of which are prob much higher) The overwhelming vast majority of airshows go off without a hitch.
@@skyecommander2169 you're an idiot
I'm sure nobody missed you.
@@saito125 except you
Oh my. Scary.
Not to down play the lose of the pilot, is it not standard procedure to close the airport, take offs and landings both, it just brings unnecessary traffic and chatter.
Not sure why we are ever shocked when crashes happen at air shows. Low altitude = no outs.
Always a screaming woman.
Can’t believe you are posting this from 8 years ago

Glad you did...
Thanks!
@@Flight_Follower True. Thank you.
watch the smoke, he bumps it down then up HARD, cause he sees the other guy is too low and he is trying to get under him, thats why he crashed, trying to miss the other guy that was out of place.
Umm, maybe he was the guy that needed to fly over the "other guy", not under and he was out of position? The "other guy" said that he had to pull up to deconflict to avoid a collision.
@@btomas225 thats his story, the smoke indicates the survivor was not where he was expected to be
I read the quote and smoke to illustrate that the Pitts was to pass above, but when the other pilot saw him going low he pulled up. Looks like he completed his roll too low. It would make sense that the Pitts would want to complete the maneuver above instead of below because the partner would have had eyes on and was level while approaching. It would have been much easier for him to deconflict.. and it looked like he would have if the Pitts had recovered.
Kathryn's Report is cited by Flight Follower. Just click on it to get the final NTSB report. The Pitts pilot had a variety of over-the-counter medications on board, and it sounded like he might not have been feeling well.

Imagine taking a sick day off work to see something like this, just to end up being one of the bystanders who were killed during it.
??? no bystanders killed
He flew it right into the ground.
This is how craters are made.
This shit shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a populated center.
My only guess on this, is he came out of his spiral late, and couldn't pull up fast enough... :(
Airshow pilots always risk their lives when they go up.. Sadly, its simply part of the role they play. They can plan for and have systems in place to keep everyone as safe as possible, but its still a dangerous thing to do.
Ohh god
.. usually how a porn begins and ends
Why I don't like air shows.
Do you really need to post a crash from 8 years ago? This is not a recent news event. Don’t try to sell it as if it was.

Well this is not a news channel.. we don’t broadcast breaking news..
there are always lessons to be learnt from every crash whether its old or new..

Wait... 2016 was EIGHT years ago?
Damn, i'm getting old.

In 2024 we do not need airshows. Everyone knows what a plane looks like. Airshows are dumb. Too many stupid fatalities.
And too many arm chair Karen's like yourself
I think it was Greg Connels crash maybe . I know he crashed in Atlanta . Augusta , Ga. Native .
It looks to me as if the elevator cable broke. You can see the smoke trail bending as the aileron surfaces are interacting with it..The trajectory just didn't change.
I've worked on this aircraft before the crash, the elevator was a push pull tube not cable. The only cables on this plane were for the rudder. He was in an accelerated stall before the crash
I was right where this was being filmed from in the Epps hangar.
