    Thank you so much for this video! I love eating kabocha squash (soups and beef stew!) and am trying to grow them this year, but it's not so common and there isn't much information out there. You've covered a lot of my questions, like if it needs a trellis (all the other videos I watched did not use one) and how to store them. Great video, keep it up!

      Glad you got some value out of the video. Good luck growing kabocha this year!

    My two Kabocha plants are volunteer plants likely from my compost . Thanks for the video because they are new to me.

      That’s great! Volunteer plants often do better. Let me know how it goes with your harvest. Keep in mind you may have to hand pollinate the blossoms to get a good yield.

      @@HealthyFreshHomegrown Thanks for that advice. The plants are voluminous and thriving , but so far the yield is light .

    First year growing squash, did buttercup. It looks like a good harvest.

    Was this harvest from 1 plant only ? Great information

      Several plants. I have other videos on my channel showing my A-frame trellis I use to grow squash on. Usually I have 6-8 plants or so, growing up the trellis from both sides.

    Thanks for the video! Bookmarked. First time growing these, or any squash. Are we supposed to always wait until the vine dies back to harvest? I’ve got one around full size, based on the seed packet, and still 6-8 weeks til first frost.

      You can harvest anytime, just make sure to do so before first frost. Leaving it on the vine longer may get you a bigger squash, but if the squash gets too old, it might not taste as good and the texture may be off.

    How many days do they take to harvest from planting?

    • @HealthyFreshHomegrown
      @HealthyFreshHomegrown  2 года назад

      From direct seeding usually 3-4 months.

      @@HealthyFreshHomegrown Black forest kabocha is rated at 75 days but I'm thinking that's way short. However, 3-4 months sounds super long.

      Keep in mind our summers here on the west coast near the Pacific are not that hot and are short. I plant the seeds in May/June and we harvest in late September.
