How do you shoot someone six times and not get charged with attempted murder or assault? There's a story there.

You gotta love all these cases where they somehow kill someone accidentally then decide to hide the body and then proceed to lie about everything until the evidence is piling up.
Not to mention fleeing the country and somehow not being able to figure out how to Google the police department that's looking for you.... If this guy even had two brain cells to rub together he'd have been able to foresee how bad all of it really was.... 🙄
It's actually crazy how many of killers try and use this excuse. You can kill by accident but you can't accidently hide a body 😂😂😂
I think they hedge their bets hoping the evidence isn't there. And they certainly aren't going to admit to anything. They go right to the very end of the road usually. I work with parolees and even when sentenced there is typically zero accountability.

So, he was sentenced to 20 years, the maximum for 2nd degree murder. When that runs out, maybe we should all remind the criminal justice system, he is still owed a charge for aggravated sexual assault of a minor.
Age of consent in WA is 16.

@@morticiaheisenberg9679 That isn't how it works... In the state of Washington a person must be 16 years old to consent to any sexual activity, HOWEVER, If under the age of 18 (16 or 17 years old), the person's partner must be no more than 5 years (60 months) older than them.

This happened in my town. When it happened, I remember commenting on the perpetrators IG and his sister was coming to his defense. She said that if Nikki didn’t want to be murdered, she shouldn’t have “lied to her brother”. Absolutely disgusting.

@@dandididann Yes, it's dangerous to lie about who you are, have sex with someone under the pretense of being a female, and then saying "just kidding i'm a guy" and assuming that everyone is going to be okay with that. Also, if he lied about his gender you have absolutely no way of knowing that he didn't also lie about his age. Lies can get you into situations you can never come back from. This is one of them.

It's crazy but it's also entirely believable because this is how cops are. Did they do anything to push the investigation forward and suspect his or his brothers' hateful behaviour, or were their hands forced when someone found her body 6 months later?
The victim’s mom did ask the judge to cancel her murderer by letting him rot in jail.

I gotta say you're one of my favorite true crime channels. Much respect for the work you do to tell the victims story. I know it might be an odd question but could do a video about my grandmother and the women that were murdered in the 70s around Western North Carolina by a man named ronald clay smith I would greatly appreciate it. She was murdered when my mother was 9 so obviously I never met her, but it would be nice to have a little light shown on her case. Again thanks for all you do.
You’re right- here he was trying to get with a 17 year old girl, he’s disgusting! That fantasy about the cellphone charger slipping from her torso up to her neck by accident was ridiculous! What’s even crazier is it looping itself three times mid struggle! He’s had months to come up with a plausible explanation before he’s interviewed that first time. Instead he says umm and I think throughout the process-just stalling for time so he can think of something to say. He’s guilty of pure hatred- it’s too bad the penalties for a murder via hate crime gets you less than 20 years in Canada! That needs to change.
It’s actually common for murderers to get around 6 years for murder in Canada. It’s insane. Canada is more concerned with the perpetrator’s rights than with the rights of the victims and the right of the public to live in safety. Canada is super progressive about many things, but, their murder sentencing policies are absolutely insane.
This took place in Vancouver, Washington, not Vancouver, British Columbia.

As a local resident and a member of the Vancouver trans community, never imagined seeing this story being covered. A transperson should always let the other person know before they engage in any sexual act. because the other person can't give consent if they don't know the facts.

I usually tend to avoid listening to her story again because it really is truly painful. I’m not a member of her community however, I fully support her community. ALL THE LETTERS! (i can’t remember them all so I’m not gonna leave anybody out if I try to remember so that’s why I say all the letters.) I don’t think I recall the judge tearing up, so thank you for that new information. also, I love the way you tell your stories.
He was in fear for his life, afraid Nikki was going for his gun so he strangled her to death with a phone charger? Most people would have used the gun in self defense.

This is such a sad story, a young life, taken for no other reason than hatred, and it makes no sense, and it infuriates me to no end. The only thing I will say is that I’m so grateful that these comments are in support of Nikki because I’ve seen other channels cover the story and the comments were so disgusting and disparaging as if she deserved it. It's fear. People are afraid to go against popular opinion. That's why comment sections are rarely a mixed bag.... it always heavily leans one way. People read the comments & then add their own comment accordingly. Then there's also the fact that everyone will jump down your throat & report u if you disagree.

I just saw this story for the first time a couple of weeks ago. This is a nice supplement to that.
Nikki needed some serious help. No teenager should have fallen this far, this fast. I would like to have heard if there drug intervention help by the mother school, or others. Why was Nikki allowed to leave school so soon? Was Nikki diagnosed or receiving any mental health help? Horrible situation. Poor kid.
Listen carefully in the beginning.
He said her mother tried to get her to get help getting clean, and pushed for rehab, but that she either resisted, or relapsed afterwards - I took "afterwards" to mean that there were occasions when her mother successfully got her to go to rehab, but it didn't work once she was out 💔
Effective intervention when the person doesn't want it is always going to be hard, and I can only begin to imagine how complicated getting good, genuinely effective treatment is when the patient is trans minor female.
Some really professional, well-established eating disorder and PTSD treatment centers that model themselves on drug rehab, dual diagnosis psych units, inpatient SA survivor programs, etc. have a shockingly chaotic patchwork of contradictory policies when it comes to trans patients.

As a "recovering addict" People can beg you to get help but until you want it no one can make you get it, you have to be tired yourself and unfortunately it drives the person further away.

Lisa had a close relationship with her daughter but didn't live with her and let her run the streets like an adult? Only David is to blame for what happened to Nikki but Lisa definitely failed as a mother. She knew something would happen to Nikki eventually with all her risky behavior as a minor! she was previously shot 6 times!! Nikki's story really hurts. In the really late 90's I had a very close trans girlfriend who dropped out of transition surgery counseling because of drug issues and was having a really hard time. I let her crash on my couch and one day she just left and didn't come back. This was pre socials and I didn't know her dead/ "legal" name so no way to go to the police etc. I really hope Chloe found other help and is doing well somewhere out there. I hope she knows she touched my life and I'll forever care for her. ✌️
She didn't deserve that. As far as the mom, she loved her daughter. I will say that you can be a parent and a friend, but don't be their homie. Talk to them without enabling or encouraging bad behaviors.
I think that was probably part of the reason why Nikki moved out. Her mom probably put her foot down. She didn't want that stuff in the house, the shady people knowing where she lives... I get it. Sometimes all you can do is set boundaries but that doesn't mean you don't care or don't love. Seeing a lot of criticism of the mother in the comments, but at 17 she probably had little or no legal recourse to force Nikki to do anything. But she tried .. :(

You have it backwards. It's volunteering the info that keeps them out of danger!!! You don't have sex with someone and THEN tell them you're a bio male. Right or wrong, it can cause someone to freak out because you just made a very big decision FOR THEM. You ask beforehand if they're cool with that! It's scary that you think it would've been crazy for her to tell him. The only crazy thing is to wait until after things happen to be honest about that. Trans people know exactly how dangerous that it and why. That's why it bothers me so much that it's being completely ignored here. That is CAUSING HARM not preventing it!

I appreciate how different the cases you discuss are, especially with this seasons focus on older cases.
I want to talk about one thing you said though, at the end of the video you mentioned her "lifestyle" and it could be that you meant it in a literal sense (as in, what she would do in her day to day life), but being transgender, and for Nikki being a girl was not a lifestyle. Lifestyle usually indicates that someone choses to live this way, but being true to yourself like Nikki was, was just her life. Just like how addiction to anything isn't really something you choose to do because else you could stop it at any moment, and that's not how addiction works.
I watched a lot of these videos and you have always been very respectful so I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, and maybe I just interpreted it in a bad way, but I felt like it was important to point out for anyone else who might get the wrong impression.

This one is a really hard listen. The way David just casually slips in his hatred of trans people and how disgusting he thinks lgbtq people are as though that isn't an indictment of his own character and may even be a defense is so infuriating, especially knowing that kind of thing has worked before in defense of murdering someone for being trans. I guess David thinks his drunk pedophile Lifestyle warrants more respect.
_"Doth protest too much"_ Anybody that is so loudly bigoted against another group like LGBTQIA, it automatically registers as self-hate to me. Nobody spends so much time worried about a group they aren't jealous of or identify with in some way.

In the American justice system there is established precedent that says a person is not responsible for murdering a Trans person as long as they claim they were enraged by the fact that the person is Trans. It's called the "trans panic" defense, and it has proven highly effective at getting a number of murderers off the hook, so it seems highly likely that such a defense would apply equally well to attempted murder, possibly even to the point where prosecutors will decline to bring charges, knowing that the perp will just be let off by using the trans panic defense.
Sex work is inherently dangerous. 'Trickin' doubly so. RIP.

Usually if man reacts so strongly, he has something to hide, if he wasn't interested he easily could've went his own way, something else happen between them, unfortunately I have a someone who was murdered after having consensual sex he was literally at a party with all openly GAY men stayed and have sex all night with the transgender person and when the SUN came up he came back and attempted to kill all 9 party goer's and unfortunately he killed 2 and the rest survived and he tried to lie and say he didn't know that it was a transgender woman but that wasn't true because he was video recorded sex acts and he finally admitted to being gay, which really angers me because now he has a LIFE sentence and can be free and gay in Prison.

And for her daughter to have survived gunshots and then be allowed to couch surf and be an active drug addict at 17…… hmmmm
I agree I think there is more to learn from these cases than just people are horrible. I know people don't want to pile on to someone when they go through something but lady, help your kid!

Anybody can get materials on a case. Some have to be bought but you can just call PD, DA , have a lawyer reach out or online. If it's been a really long time some offices won't have any thing or at least they'll tell you that
I got them from the District Attorney that prosecuted the case. You can request the files from closed cases. A lot of places in the Us will make some excuse why they can't give it to you (Police departments are the worst), but many places will hand it over, usually with redactions.

I see comments (mostly replies) attempting to justify this crime because of the victim's gender identity or lack of disclosure. These same people make no mention of the risks you knowingly take when you pay for sex. There simply is no excuse for murder.
