I am freaking amazed. I made my concoction with a 6:1 ratio of sugar to borax. I put holes in the tops of several plastic condiment containers I bought at the dollar store, and put the containers in several spots where there was very heavy carpenter ant activity at night. The ants were attracted immediately. The next day I emptied out the containers that had lots of dead ants in them and refilled them with fresh sugar borax/mix. That evening I checked on my baits and looked around my house, and THERE WAS NOT ONE ANT ANYWHERE. None in my bait containers., none in my mulch, none running on my sidewalks, none on my porch, none running up the side of my garage.. One night of baiting must have wiped out most of them! Thanks, Gary, your method far exceeded my expectations!

  • @HawaiianReloads

Just did this yesterday. It works! I made the semi dry and i also made the syrup form actually by accident. Too much water but I had both forms on hand. So I put both forms directly on the ant trail and only the dry form in my cabinet. Ants hit both but by the evening they only wanted the syrup form. Next day came home from work and no ants in sight. There were some straglers in the cabinet. By this time syrup form was dried out. So I cleaned everything up and mixed a small batch for same places and cabinet. 36 hrs and nothing in sight. Awesome!!
6 to 1 ratio... 1 scoop borax and 6 scoops sugar mix together dry in bowl then ran my fingers under the faucet and added 4-6 drop at a time mixing in between to get both forms. Try it!
    Thanks for the detailed video!!
Ants were gone in less than 24 hrs.

Had a serious ant problem in the house and garden, so I made a syrup and a powder mix. The workers eat the liquid but bring the powder back to the nest for the larvae and queen before they die. For the syrup I used 1 part borax to 3 parts sugar dissolved in warm water, then added one part pancake syrup (or honey) for good measure. The powder is the same ratio of borax and sugar but just a dash of water to help bind the ingredients. Placed the mixtures in bottle caps, small dishes, and empty plastic bottles all around the house and garden. Bottom line - no more ants after only a day or two.

I just did this pretty much as shown, and it stopped the ants in my fig tree in about 5 hours. I used boric acid instead of borax because I had some. It didn't dissolve very well, and mine turned out a little wetter than shown. Put the container at the base of the tree by the ant trail. The ants went for it like crazy, and now I see no ants. Looks good to me!

Nice. As usual, your videos are super informative. I've been doing a 4:1 Borax to sugar solution, adding water to get a thick, syrupy liquid consistency. Then floating about 1/4 of a cookie or a little bread in my containers for the workers to take back to the nest. I like your version. It's dry and crumbly, with no need for a cookie, and you can mix and store batches for later use.

The recipe worked for me. It got rid of "my" ants in about 1 1/2 days. The ants came out in droves and it was kind of scary, since I wasn't sure it would work and that it might in fact make the problem worse (since I'd be feeding them). Previous recipes I tried didn't work because it was syrupy & sticky. Your explanation of wanting to make it dry so that they could both eat it and take it back to the colony made a lot of sense and worked. Thanks !!!

This absolutely works. It also worked in the house. I had ants coming in my kitchen window. So I did this in the windowsill. I just open my window and put this all in it. Couple of days later later aunts gone. They never came back I left it there for a little while maybe three weeks need three weeks and they never came back ever came back. After you do it you just rinse it out you can open your screen and rinse it out onto the ground. One caution is borax is harmful to children and animals and humans if eaten. It is mild enough that we use it in the medical profession to make eye drops but this has to be done by a pharmacist in a very very diluted solution. So yes it’s poisonous but it’s not like you’re handling rat poisoning poisoning.

The first time I made one (a few weeks ago), I put too much borax in and too much liquid thinking it will be more effective. Most ants stayed away from the bait and I think the ones that died were killed by the fumes LOL I had the mixture sitting in a couple of lids and they harden up.

Thanks for the video, Gary! I’ve been so excited to get my garden going after a long cold northern michigan winter, and now that I’m just one month in I’m battling so many pests it’s overwhelming! Ants have taken over my spinach which is going to seed (they’re all over the seeds), I think grasshoppers are vomiting all over the other spinach, spider mites are on my radish, chamomile and broccoli - I just wasn’t prepared for this! I also think I have powdery mildew on all my greens, which I’ve been using your h202 formula to cure (thank you!) I’m going to put an ant trap in the garden after watching this video, and I’m about to make a peppermint/rosemary spray that I learned from your other video to tackle the spider mites. I used that boxed Borax stuff with sugar and warm water. They didn't come after leaving right beside an ant hill. So I heated up a tablespoon of honey so they would smell it but I also put in a little more borax. I stired till the sugar part and borax melted and not sandy sounding. No pets and none in neighborhood so I used a plastic container that turkey sandwhich meat comes in and put holes in the side but because I did not use a top, they were just climbing in it in droves over the top part. I put one by the front door too because there were lots of swarming ants like they were looking for something. When I heated the honey to pour in, I could smell it big time, guess the ants did to cause I couldn't even count how many ants died. Worked on the big red ants and the little ones. This is better than Raid cuz it works and way less expensive. Thanks!

    • @cminchy

Ants are essential for the flowers to open, they suck off the sugar sap the flower produces

    • @dorotheep.693
      @dorotheep.693 5 лет назад +2

When you cut peonies to bring in the house (as I always do!! such fragrance) just bang the flowers on the grass/lawn and the ants are flung off them. Fresh flowers can survive such a treatment just fine. But peonies NEED ants for the buds to open, those ants don't seem to bother anything else, they're medium-size black ants. I have small black ants in symbiosis with aphids at the moment, which does terrible damage to plants, both of them do. My borax bait will need to be far from the peonies.

that was excellent,, thanks.......... I'm gonna try it..
I've been using boric acid,, it also takes awhile but/and it takes out the whole nest..
Boric acid is biodegradable in a couple of months and safe to use if handled correctly..
Get a cottage cheese container lid and fill it with boric acid (keep the flat side down so there's a little lip around it)........
Set a bottle cap in the center; filled with different (lunch left overs) foods the ants like, mixed with sugar (that gets the bigger sugar ants and the little grease ants at the same time)...
Slide the whole thing under a counter or fridge, furniture or anywhere (out of pets and kids reach) and check every couple of days to spread out the boric acid again cuz the ants will clear a trail through it.. if it's set right over an existing ant run, it works best but they'll find it soon if that's not a safe place.. this also means, if you're trying to get rid of an infestation, you have to leave the trail alone for several days until it stops on it's own,,,....
The boric acid covers their legs which is where they breathe.. They bring it back home and other ants run over it until it's spread through the whole colony.. and in 4 to 5 days, the ant run will be gone.. in the desert, the colonies are so large, the ants will use my house as a short cut instead of going around the house.. fire ants will cut into a home to eat the electrical wiring, sheesh..
I think I'll keep using my method for the desert ant runs, in the house,, but your method looks great to use in the garden where my method does NOT work,, lol,, so again, thanks..
This method has also been voted best cockroach eliminator too (by those councils on safety somewhere, lol).. and it gets my vote too...

Faye Spath I think it should be the other way around..more sugar and less borax perhaps.

If it’s not working - you may have too much borax- especially if you see a few dead ants in or around the trap. The whole idea is to encourage them to take it back to the nest.

How long is the Borax mixture good for that was left in the container you marked? I have tons of ants in my garden but have been putting out mint leaves and I do not see as many but I think they just make a new way to get in and out of their nest where there is no mint. I need a long term solution. I also wanted to know if it could be put into a water bottle or will the sunlight change the mixture or harden it more? Thanks

    Thanks for your video.
I tried making my own and had limited success over a several week period.
I finally broke down and forked over 8 bucks at my local huge hardware store for some commercial grade T**** Liquid Ant Bait. Although we had hundreds of visible ants in 3 locations, within 24 hours the ants were gone.
I'm a huge do-it-yourselfer (do everything around the house from plumbing to installing my own furnace and AC) but I couldn't get rid of those pesky ants until I bought this stuff.

i just noticed little itty bitty ants in the blossoms of my cucumber plant. This is the first time I have grown cucumbers and it is in a container. I have been growing my garden just since 2020 and have never seen ants on any of my plants before or even in my back yard? Do I need to do the borax thing for just one plant. I don't see any aphids on the plant that would attract ants. Ideas?

Ants arent bad unless they are eating the roots. Many help with pollination and just climb around.

Well you can add more sugar. But some ants dont eat sugar, they eat protein. SO in that case jello is good as it has gelatin in it.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

Virginia Partida Question isnt is it organic it is... but it is a poison if ingested at specific levels. Copper sprays are organic but you dont want to breath it in.
I think I did a screw cap video for the bait on my other channel with holes poked in lid. That was to make it pet safe. Might be good for little ones too.

borax is wholly natural and has no inherently toxic ingredients. It doesn't cause cancer, accumulate in the body or in nature, or absorb through the skin. borax is not harmful to the body or the environment with normal, external usage any more than salt or baking soda is.The high alkalinity of borax is likely what causes skin irritation (just as excessive use of baking soda would cause irritation)

If they aren't sugar ants you can do the same with real butter or bacon grease in place of sugar. Won't need to add water to it though as water and oil don't mix. Try with sugar first and if that doesn't work try the butter or bacon grease.
