- There's not much that's more fun than talking about sports cards with friends. But, it's a bit more fun when you're talking about vintage sports cards with your Dad. I recently spent an hour discussing the hobby with my Dad. We talk about everything from the National, updates to his collection, and his new Grail card. If you have any questions that you'd like me to ask him in an upcoming episode, leave them in the comments of this video.

Thanks son for including me in your creative endeavors with sports cards. It was a very enjoyable hour for me. 😃
I love having you on, Pop.
@@mrmjmiller Thanx to both of you, I have learned a lot from both of you.
MidLife Dad always shares tremendous wisdom!! You are fortunate to enjoy this awesome hobby with your Dad!! Thanks for having him on the program!!
I agree. This is my favorite and arguably best short winded video.
Appreciate that. We have fun together.
I just love Coach Miller and his wonderful wisdom and insight!
Agreed. He's great.
always love to listen to sage advice & stories in the trenches from the Coach! Thanks for sharing.
Good Luck with the Ruth card Coach!!!!!!!!! AND the Wilt. Love you both😍😍
We love you too, Handsome.
Manufactured rarity, I love that line, sums up modern cards perfectly!
Truth.
Great video. Such a great opportunity to share your hobby interest with your dad. I agree with your dad’s thoughts on modern manufactured rarity vs vintage rarity.
Thanks so much!
Made it to the end. :-)
Such a blessing to have this relationship. Thanks for getting on the couches.
LOL. Glad you enjoyed it.
Totally agree with Coach about the Pete Rose Rookie card. I am putting together his card run but have never cared for the looks of that card so I don't need to have it but I absolutyl love my 64 Topps All-Star Rookie Trophy card.
Agreed.
Always love watching your collaboration with you Dad. He and I have so much in common, such as our name, Mike. Also, our age of 74, and definitely what we like and collect, which is so similar. Our collecting history is even very similar. Thanks for the great video once again.
Appreciate that. Thanks so much.
Great episode. I love the way your dad thinks about cards, including being open to changing his mind about things. The T-206s are growing on me too, but my wheelhouse is still the 50s stuff your dad loves! (And 60s too.). Thank you both.
Thanks for watching/listening.
Another “heart warming” episode for your viewers to enjoy. Thank you both for sharing this convo with the card community. I’m glad I’m not the only one already thinking about Chicago. ;) Hope you have a great holiday weekend and look forward to the next installment with OG Miller and son.
Thanks Matt. He's a great guy. We have fun talking about this stuff.
Love that you included some Lucy video clips. Have had the honor to watch her play live, and I am ready to add a Lucy rookie card to my collection. She's got talent. His other daughter is a stud golfer as well, and both kids are terrific kids.
Love watching the videos with your pops, and glad I have been able to go to card shows with you and your pops both as a kid and an adult.
Thanks buddy. Appreciate you watching Brit Dogger.
If you can afford it, BUY IT! Finding a nice example that you can live with, that would make you happy is worth it 100%! You can enjoy it and then pass it on!! We are just keepers of these cool cards!
I totally agree.
Great conversation, he needs to get a Ruth for sure. I’ll help him find a good one!
I agree. He should buy the Ruth.
We are relatively the same age Graig. I lost my dad suddenly 15 years ago this December. Listening to you and Coach shoot the breeze over baseball cards had me smiling ear to ear. I could have listened to you guys talk for a lot longer than you did. But I appreciate the time you gave us with our collective midlife Dad. This was great and I trust you’ll be a man of your word when you’ll say this will be a reoccurring thing.
And coach…… My crystal ball is showing a bunch of tables at the 2025 national and there is a Goudey Ruth with your name on it. The crystal ball doesn’t lie. Have a wonderful weekend gentlemen.
Love this comment. Thanks Steve.
Very good episode! I really enjoyed hearing all the answers to the questions. I think the most interesting part for me was that you both have two independent collections, but they are still connected. Like when your dad said he considered buying a card, but didn’t because you already had it.
Appreciate that. We have fun talking cards.
Another great chat down with dad.
Love these. Pure gold.
You had me laughing regarding Pop purchasing that 1951 grail Mantle Rc.
I think he may cave just Craig 🙏🏼😂
Keep on it my friend 😉
LOL. I'll keep putting the pressure on.
Craig,
I watched this with great interest since at 78 I could relate to virtually every word your Dad said.
Particularly his collecting as a kid.
I had two buddies and we bought a box each ($1.20 +tax) each time a new series came out.
Like him, I filed them by team (but never rubber banded them). Then took the box and made it a filing box, one for the NL and one for the AL.
As you know from some pics I’ve sent you, the cards today are basically in the condition they were when I bought them.
Because of their condition, I learned to live with the often off centered cards; not terribly off centered. But they were what I bought as a kid and I wasn’t going to go through every set and upgrade a Steve Korcheck if he was a little off center.
I would absolutely love to communicate with your Dad.
Finally, the last part of the interview dealt with the ‘61 Fleer Chamberlain. I bought mine at a hardware store because the grocery stores in my little town didn’t carry them.
I put the set together easily. BUT: The cards are notoriously off center.
My Chamberlain is just like it came from the pack…….but has a pencil thin left side and bottom border. Good luck finding a well centered one and be ready to fork out the big bucks if you do.
Had it since I was 15, was good enough for me then, good enough for me at 78.
This was my favorite episode you have done because it was so relatable in so many ways to me.
T.
That's awesome. Some great memories.
I miss talking cards with my dad. The odd thing was that my brother and I collected vintage and he collected the shiny stuff with a large Griffey, Gwynn and Heritage collection. Great to see you two talk cards together. So awesome that MidLifeDad bought 2 grails. Some huge cards with the ‘54 Williams and ‘56 Jackie! I agree that the second year cards are good buys - never delineated the ones with the same picture as those without. Really enjoyed the video thanks for sharing this with us. Midlife Dad you need to feel comfortable with spending the money and it has to be something you can enjoy given the cost - but if you can get your head around that you absolutely should buy the Ruth.
I agree. He should get the Ruth.
Great video guys!
Thanks for watching
Great video, Graig. One of your best card conversations yet. Your dad is a gem and since you asked, I think Coach should buy all 4 of the 1933 Babe Ruth Goudey cards. He is a set collector after all. :) Cheers!
Great idea!!! He should buy all four!!
Gave a video like. Always enjoy these, thanks for sharing
thanks for listening.
Awesome conversation guys and coach, go get that Ruth Goudey 😂
Yes!!
Hi Graig. This was an extremely interesting and fun video. Yes, your dad needs to buy that Ruth, plus many more he wants. Talk soon my friend.
I totally agree!!
Mike !!!! Im really excited for this one
We had a fun conversation.
Enjoyed the conversation in this video between you and you dad. I agree about manufactured rarity. That's one of my biggest pet peeves in the hobby now. Regarding the Goudey Ruth, I believe Coach Miller should be the one to make the decision on that card. It would be an amazing card to own and would be the centerpiece of any collection that has one, but it is a very expensive card.
Ultimately, he will absolutely be the one who makes the decision.
Vintage is never going to go out of style. People like me that started doing Vintage a yr ago at the age of 41 r going to realize they were kinda dumb for collecting modern like me and go into vintage at some point. Great show fellas!!
I agree. Vintage will always be cool.
Great conversation with your dad! I understand his position. As one who is the same age as him, I didn't start buying expensive cards until about 12 years ago. I don't regret my purchases and I am still looking to purchase more. He should go for the Ruth Goudey. He won't regret buying it but he might regret not buying it!
I agree Dave!! He should go for the Ruth!!
I love the comment the “Godfather” of sports cards made on the Pete Rose rookie. “I don’t like floating heads.” I prefer the 2nd year card also.
No doubt...the 2nd year card is much better looking.
You got your dad to be more long winded. I could listen to you 2 all day. A drive with you both to a show would be fun. It is a little surprising that he doesnt have more interest in pre war. He loves baseball history. Goudey Ruth
I tried to ask questions that don't have short answers. He did a great job of giving great explanations of his thoughts.
Oh yeah! MidLife Dad is The Man! We love him and need more of him! Wish I would or could have spent more time with Mike (and you!) at the National!
Future questions for Coach: What do you think about the 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle (please disregard if you already have one!) as a potential grail card to pursue? Do you like the 1952 Bowman Mantle more than his 1951 Bowman? Would you ever consider a Bowman Mantle run? How cool would that be? Just jumping on the bandwagon of encouraging you to spend money on big cards! 😂👊
Great question, Adam!! I'll be interested to hear his response.
I can understand that it is difficult to buy such expensive grail cards when you haven't spent that much in the past for fantastic cards. Its tough to change your ways no matter if you can afford it so I understand your Dad. I also notice centering more because of the emphasis on RUclips so in that way I have been influenced. Grear discussion with your Dad.
Thanks so much. Appreciate that.
Great show guys!! Love the long format. It really fits well into my daily life !
Glad you enjoy it!
Really enjoy the channel, and this was a valuable investment listening. That said, I'm speaking a little scripture pertaining to the ruth.. A wise man leaves a inheritance for his children's children.. That said, if you can enjoy a few cards.. Love these chats.
Thanks. That's great scripture, for sure. Dave Ramsey uses that one a lot.
I’d never travel to the national due to it being in the HOT humid summer.. I’m east coast and got some great BIG shows spring and fall in chantilly and philly.. if the national ever changes to spring or fall I’d prolly go.. its just to HOT to travel and be in crowds in the summer heat and humitidy..
For me, it's worth it. But, if you live in an area with a lot of good shows, I get it.
I love mid life dad. But I agree with Graig that dad should view vintage cards as valuable estate assets that he can both enjoy, and have financial value to his children when the time comes.
Buy that Ruth!!!!
Yes!! I agree. He should buy it!!
😂😂 graig is trying to inherit some fire 😂😂😂
Heck yeah. Who wants cash….i want some Ruth’s!!!!!
I think Graig's dad in his own way said go buy your own. 😂
@@ACD1994 🤣🤣🤣
I love the way your brain works, Graig. I've told you that. I also love the way your dad's brain works. You are both very pragmatic. Mr. Miller, with all due respect, you are a man who has worked his entire life to support his family. Your kids are grown and successful. If you want a Babe Ruth card, buy a Babe Ruth card! You deserve to treat yourself. You are fortunate to be in a position to do so. We would all love to share in that moment with you! I hope I'm not overstepping. I just thought I'd give my opinion. As always, I really enjoyed this conversation! Thanks for doing these.
Well said, Mr. Ballgame. Well said.
Graig tricked his Dad 😂 “Wanna come on for an intervention, I mean a card discussion!” Mr. Miller- sell that house and buy some more cards! Graig has room for you!
Question for next time- Mr.Miller I love that you have limited yourself to 80 cards. If there was a collector out there, that feels they have too many cards and are overwhelmed. And they have stacks of sets and common cards. But don’t know how to pair down there collection. What advice would you give them?
Which house, Theo? He owns TWO!!
@@MidLifeCards 🤣🤣🤣Mr. Miller- shame on you! I gotta take Graig’s side, buy a damn Ruth card, you cheapskate!
@@ClementeCollector Theo, Graig's dad is a lot kinder than I am. One of the two people on camera could use a therapist, and the other person is the dad. 😉 Wait 2 houses!? Hmm...buy the Ruth, and have Graig, pay the rent!
@@ACD1994 LOL
I'm honored. Thanks Graig for including my questions. It's been so long, at least it feels that way. I kind of forgot, that I had asked so many questions. Almost feel bad for asking additional questions. But if it's going to be 2 to 3 months until we see Mr. Miller again. I have the time to not, feel so bad about asking more questions. I assume, Mickey Mantle and New York Yankees players have always been his first priority. What percentage then, of his collection is, Pre-War versus Vintage? Does he ever miss the days of Beckett price guide playing an integral role, in determining the value of how much a card is worth? Or prefers eBay for comps? Thoughts on having doubles of a card? Finally, what is the best way to grow the hobby? Fanatics says their goal is 10X. How much Kool-Aid will I need to consume before I worry about drowning? Hopefully my swimming is, still up to par.
LOL. I'll have these for him on our next conversation.
I am a lot like your dad, but born and raised in Oklahoma, I have all the Mantle’s in decent psa grades, but trust me he wants a 1951 bowman Mickey Mantle…that’s my grail card also…I do not even consider the 52 Topps mantle…but the 51 is attainable….buy it dad or I will.
He loves Mantle. There's no doubt about it. I agree...he should buy a 51 Bowman.
Coach - you can buy the Ruth ...enjoy it and probably sell it for a little profit.
I agree!!
Your dad is the card Zen master. He is more oracle than coach. As a girls soccer coach I appreciate the soccer highlights. Steve Garvey and Keith Hernandez shoul be in HOF. Garvey more 200 hit seasons than Gwynn. Both are at .300 career hitters with multiple gold gloves.
Lots of wisdom. It's fair the dive into it.
Great conversation with your dad. He's about 10 years older than I am. What amazes me is that at his age he still has a strong desire to own ANYTHING. But I do disagree with him on one point. There is no objective evidence to indicate that the general population is greatly interested interested in the past and I see nothing to indicate that future card collectors will be much different. The iconic players of the distant past will always have interest but I do not believe that average HOF players will be be sought out. The recency bias is getting stronger every day IMHO.
Most younger people that I know are much more nostalgic about comics and video games than about the cards of their youth. There's a huge difference in popular culture items from 1970 than 2000. So much more available post-1980 than the pre-1980 paucity of cards. In the current age of cable-tv and streaming it's a consume-on-demand popular culture that bears little resemblance to decades earlier so I just don't see vintage card demand (exception being the icons a la Mays, Aaron, Clemente) holding up as us old Grognards disappear. We collected cards because there wasn't much else to collect. That has not been true for a long tine now.
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with those lesser known Hall of Famers in the future.
Great video Graig. You are very blessed to be able to share this hobby with your dad. I have a question for your dad. Paralleling my question with a historic time we all lived through, the steroid era. During that era, we saw home runs flying out at a record pace. We all enjoyed it at the time, but in hindsight we now realize it was just performance enhancing drugs. I had no idea at the time that was what was going on. So, my question is much like the steroid era, you were an adult collector during the junk wax era. Did you have any idea at the time how over produced the cards were? Or did you think, like I did, that you would be able to save the Gregg Jefferies of the hobby and retire one day? Second part question, do you see today’s modern cards as junk wax part II?
What a great question. I know his answer, but I look forward to asking him.
For me, i think all shows should be what jeff wilsons new store did…. all cards are displayed in a horizontal display… the cards on a table top is old schoo… cards you can see as u stand at eye level..
That's what they do in Japan, and where the ''inspiration'' for the set up was most likely taken from
Yeah...it's a good idea.
I only collect the high end hof players so I don’t have much to sell to buy higher into he said. I have very few 2nd and lower tier hof cards. I start at the top I can’t find myself selling them.
Yeah. That's the cool thing though...there are cool cards at all price points.
Almost forgot to ask my question. Please ask your Dad to reminisce with me since we are the same age and share what he was doing back in 1960,1961?
I was running my paper route, playing little league baseball, and buying Topps wax packs. Just like to hear his response. Thanks 👍
You got it. I'll ask him for our next conversation.
Coach is a fantastic Dad to be looking out for his family…but with the expertise of Graig, he needs to cut loose!!! Life is much too short!
I totally agree!! It's time for him to start buying some cool cards to enjoy.
i agree with your dad abou the pre rookie from the 60s. i dont feel the 1960 Yaz is not his TRUE ROOKIE. I started his 61 which i feel is his true rookie
I agree. But, I do like the 60 Yaz. I have one and love it.
GOUDEY RUTH! GOUDEY RUTH! GOUDEY RUTH!
LOL. I agree, Mook.
Graig Does your dad still have complete sets? and did he do master sets with errors and color variations. Thanks! Bret
He sold off his sets. The only set he owns now is the 69 Topps Basketball.
Buy the Ruth. Coach!
I agree!!
Where can Coach get a great price on a Goudey Ruth? Ash?
Hard to get discounts on Ruth cards...but if he hunts, he'll find out.
If your goal is to leave something meaningful for your children I think inheriting your Goudey Ruth would be much more meaningful to Graig than a check for 10k. My two cents. Great discussion!
no doubt.
So true!
this vedio title looks good… but damn, the time is over 1 hour !!! i cant watch 1 hour.. will watch bits and pieces… trim those videos down to 10 or 15 minutes is my suggestion..
I get it. Longer videos aren't for everyone. Maybe listen as you drive?
LOL at the shamelessness of trying to steer your 74 year old father away from the Vada Pinson and Moose SKowron cards he loves "because they might not appreciate in value as much as Mantle". I'm sure after 30 years of enjoying these cards, when he is 104 years old and liquidates his collection he will be kicking himself for buying Pinson instead of Mantle because it might be worth a couple dollars more . And I'm not going to even touch the Goudey Ruth discussion except to say "yikes!!". If $$$$ is the only thing which matters (as you suggest) maybe he will regret buying pieces of cardboard instead of putting into stocks or real estate.
P.S. as someone who has personally built a nearly complete Topps baseball set run from 1953-80, I'm well aware of the fact that semi-star cards (as well as pretty much any Yankees or Brooklyn cards) are actually often among the toughest cards in many of these sets. Bidding is always fierce for Skowron, Pinson, Boyer, Colavito, Howard, and the list goes on and on. These cards get slabbed far less frequently than Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente, much less Spahn, Kaline and Killebrew. These cards are generally totally under the radar of the Graig Midlifes, Geoff Wilsons, and Chasing Cardboards of the world. I don't know the first thing about investing in sports cards but I am an avid baseball card collector and an avid investor of actual financial instruments like stocks and bonds. When investing the only thing which matters is value and growth. I don't see why Mantle--whose cards are already worth 10x-100x more than Pinson or Skowron, is going to grow more in value than them. There is a very real possibility that they could be inducted into the HOF and their cards would likely double in value overnight. Tough for me to see any scenario where Mantle cards double in value overnight. Plenty of people think Mantle is greatly overvalued at today's prices. Mantle is already the most valuable card in almost every 50's-60's set he appears in. Where is the room for growth? Just because his cards have grown more in value in the past doesn't mean they will continue. Investing 101: "Past performance is no guarantee of future results".
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Interesting perspective.
I appreciate you taking the time to listen to our conversation and leave a comment.
get ur dad a better videio camaera…. lol.. he is VERY blurry...
It's not the camera, it's probably his internet signal.
Hating on Harold baines.
LOL. The only thing I don't like Harold Baines name being dragged through the mud. Is that there are, other players in the baseball HOF including some of the pre-war players too, that should not be, in the HOF. But since Baines is, the most recent questionable choice, he receives most of the flak.
I can't help myself. LOL.
